00:30And now this grand game enters its sixth decade.
00:35We welcome you to Santa Clara and Levi's Stadium for Super Bowl 60.
00:42This one is for all the marvels.
00:46It's the AFC champion, New England Patriots.
00:50And the champions of the NFC, the Seattle Seahawks.
00:56Around the globe, wherever you are, welcome to America's Great Sports Day.
01:01Mike Tirico, Greg Olsen, Super Bowl Sunday.
01:05Great to share with you one more time, Greg.
01:07What a 2025 season. All the twists, all the turns.
01:11It all culminates tonight here in Santa Clara.
01:13And I think this is a matchup, Mike.
01:15I don't know how many people had on Earth.
01:18Just a couple of weeks ago.
01:20Even for the rosters, both sides of the ball, very well balanced, very well coached.
01:25So I think the biggest thing each team told us all week was,
01:29let's just handle the emotions of the pregame.
01:31Let's handle all of the lead-up.
01:33Because once that ball's kicked off, let's just rely on what's gotten us here.
01:37And I think we're in for a treat.
01:38Now return, coming from the 7.
01:44He'll get this past the 20 before he brought down the chive of the 25-yard line.
01:50So here come the Patriots, and Greg, they are led by their second-year quarterback,
01:55the number 3 overall pick in 2024 out of North Carolina.

01:59You just can't imagine the emotions and the thoughts swirling around his head
02:04as he takes the field on this opening drive, Mike.
02:07I mean, you think of the journey they've been on the regular season.
02:10That gauntlet of playoff games through the AFC playoffs.
02:14And now here they are.
02:15He's taking the field as the starting quarterback in the Super Bowl.
02:19And he's four quarters away from living out his dream.
02:22He'll go play-action with May.
02:30He'll get this out to Henderson.
02:33And they'll hold him to a gain of just a couple and sets up third down.
02:37A 2-yard gain on the play.
02:41And it's third down.
02:44He'll try to run for it with Henderson.
02:47And he's only going to be able to get back to the line.

03:32This is fifth different franchise as he starts year eight in the NFL.
03:37And, Greg, it's year one with the Seahawks.
03:39All week long, they just keep telling themselves, it's just another game.
03:44And then reality sets in.
03:46And I promise, as he takes the field right now, Mike, the thoughts and the emotions swirling
03:50around his head.
03:52He's got to do his best to harness it.
03:54These are the games that legacies are built upon.
03:57And he understands, even though he's had this long journey, he is going to be judged based
04:03on these next four quarters.
04:05Quickly from the former Buckeye, Jackson Smith and Zigbo.
04:09And that's a first down.
04:11It will be a game of eight.
04:13Just take what the defense is giving you, and you can stay ahead of the chains and just
04:19take these easy pitch-and-catch throws underneath, pitch routes, quick game.

08:14It's not often, Mike, that everything breaks right
08:17for this type of return off of an interception.
08:19But, boy, is it beautiful when it does.
08:21I mean, look at the defenders just flip around
08:24and become blockers.
08:25Trying to spring their guy to the house.
08:27Great athleticism.
08:29Some great moves on his part.
08:31I mean, he's going to have some of his offensive teammates
08:33looking over their shoulder for their position.

08:38And he'll go down.

08:42A loss was definitely not something they had accounted
08:45or budgeted for in this spot.
08:47And now, I think it really limits.

09:19I mean, to get the ball not only in a short field
09:22but in a goal-to-go situation,
09:24you don't get a lot of those chances.
09:26You have to cash them in.
09:28And that's exactly what they were able to do.

09:34And the Patriots are off and running here in the Super Bowl.

09:39Well, following the touchdown,

10:02This unit hasn't been at their best early on,
10:05a punch, followed by an interception on their first two drives.
10:12On the ground, it's Walker to start the drive.
10:22And he is planting backfield.
10:25Defenders crashing through.
10:26Blow up that play behind the line.
10:28I can promise you, that is not how they wanted to start this drive, Mike.
10:33I mean, to get blown up at the point of attack,
10:36there was just nowhere for the back to go on that run.
10:40To throw is Darnold.
10:42And a good job rallying to the football.
10:44Holding just a gain of a yard and sets up a third down.
10:48That's about not exactly a highlight reel-type play,
10:51but in some cases, just checking the ball down to your fullback,
10:55picking up some positive yards,
10:57is the only play that's to be made.
11:00Here we go, set.

11:09That's hard.
11:11And they will bring him down on the other side of midfield.
11:14A big play here in the big game.

11:28Both pre-snap and post-snap,
11:30this is about as well done as you can do at the quarterback position.
11:35Get in and out of the right call,
11:36identifying the holes along the back end,
11:38and then the throw.
11:40You can't put it in a better spot.
11:41I mean, that's just a big time play.
11:44And not much there.
11:46Good defense held to no game.
11:49We're seeing such an uptick, Mike,
11:51across the league in these hybrid,
11:53kind of positionless defenders,
11:55especially safety.
11:57So are they a safety?
11:58Are they a linebacker?
11:59They're good in both coverage.
12:00And in this case,
12:01they can play near the line of scrimmage
12:04and still make plays on the ground.
12:06A throw left side,
12:08but it's in the field.
12:09It just doesn't seem to me right now
12:12that he's seen the field for him.
12:13And that last possession results in the pick.
12:16We'd expect him to come back out here
12:17and be a little bit more careful with the ball,
12:19find easier completions,
12:21find the better matchup.
12:23And instead,
12:23he puts the ball back in the arms way,
12:25and he's lucky that wasn't another interception.
12:27They hook up again,
12:30second time on this drive.
12:32And this one's good for 18 yards
12:34and a first down.

13:51Not only did they do a good job
13:52making it difficult for them to complete the pass.
13:54Oh, and going to be bottled up
13:56and taking it down.
13:57They got it.
13:59With the right personnel,
14:01the safety position is like the ultimate chess pass, right?
14:04You can put him in center field to play pass.
14:06You can bring him up and make him a pseudo linebacker.
14:08But you also can bring him on pressure, Mike.
14:11And that's what this guy does so well.
14:14The timing and the speed he got there in third.
14:18The hardest part about these missed kicks, Mike,
14:20is for all the guys that work so hard
14:22to put the ball in position to come away with points.
14:25You kind of trot off the field,
14:27hoping that next possession has a different result.
14:29The drag route is certainly not the most complicated route
14:44on the route tree,
14:45but a really nice job there
14:46using the scheme to create separation.
14:49He did a really nice job there
14:51working across the middle of the field
14:52as he made himself open.
14:55On the give, it's Henderson.
14:58And he's trying to get around the corner,
15:00but will not.
15:01But down, that's a loss on the play.
15:05He'll empty out the backfield
15:07and line up for third and three.

17:09And that's where the top guys in the league are still capable of overcoming it.

17:18That is a recipe for success.
17:20And he goes through the initial contact.
