01:46Nightly news starts right now.
01:48This is NBC Nightly News.
01:53Live from the Super Bowl.
01:55Reporting tonight from San Francisco.
01:58Here is Tom Yames.
02:00And good evening.
02:02We are live in San Francisco tonight with the Super Bowl now just 48 hours away.
02:07Just behind me here, fans pouring in to the NFL experience.
02:11You can see them, so many Seahawks fans ready for that big game.
02:16Fans around the world coming together to watch the spectacular opening ceremony as well as the Milan Cortina Winter Games officially begin.
02:26We'll take you to Italy in just a moment.
02:28But we want to begin tonight with that breaking news coming into our newsroom about Nancy Guthrie, the mother of our good friend Savannah.
02:34NBC News has just learned that law enforcement has looked into a vehicle, possibly more than one, that may have been connected to her disappearance.
02:43It comes as a new message has been received in the case sent to a Tucson TV station from someone claiming to be holding her.
02:51The FBI is now investigating that new message.
02:53And our team has now reviewed a copy of that original email described by authorities as a possible ransom note.
03:00We have two reports tonight.
03:02We want to begin with Liz Kreutz again from Tucson.
03:05Tonight, during the agonizing wait for answers, now six days into the search for Nancy Guthrie,
03:11the FBI and Pima County Sheriff's Department say they are aware of a new message regarding Nancy Guthrie
03:16and are actively inspecting it for its authenticity.
03:19Authorities have not said what the message contains.
03:22But NBC News has reviewed a copy of what authorities describe as a possible ransom note
03:26sent to three news organizations earlier this week.
03:30The contents of that first letter are consistent with the descriptions provided by the FBI,
03:34including the two deadlines, last night at 5 and this coming Monday.
03:38Whoever is out there holding our mother, we want to hear from you.
03:42Moments after the first deadline passed from that original ransom note,
03:45Savannah posted this video of her brother pleading for whoever may have taken their 84-year-old mother to send proof of life.
03:52We need you to reach out and we need a way to communicate with you so we can move forward.
03:56But first, we have to know that you have our mom.
04:00It's unclear if the new message tonight is connected.
04:02Experts say waiting is now all the family can do.
04:05Captors are the ones in control right now.
04:08They are controlling everything from information to the health and well-being of Savannah's mother.
04:14And they're also gating the ability to be in contact with them or not.
04:19This as investigators on the ground continue their search.
04:23The sheriff tells us they've now spoken to everyone who regularly worked at Nancy's home.
04:27I think there was a landscape crew, a pool, a maintenance crew, maybe a housekeeper.
04:33They've all been very cooperative.
04:34They provided certain information that was helpful to us.
04:37Detectives are also still searching the neighborhoods for any video evidence.
04:41We also go outside to our businesses and say, could you do us a favor?
04:45And every camera you have facing out to the roadways, get us that.
04:51And we've gotten some great response from different large businesses.
04:55This is one of the biggest intersections close to Nancy Guthrie's home.
04:58Beyond just the businesses, they're also looking at the cameras on these streetlights.
05:02In fact, the sheriff tells us they have the footage from here, along with every intersection with cameras across the city.
05:08Part of the challenge finding footage from those overnight hours is that the residential area is also extremely dark with few streetlights.
05:15This is what it looks like driving at night.
05:17The disappearance of Savannah's mom igniting an outpouring of love from her fans to her dearest friends.
05:23Today, Hoda joining the Today Show.
05:26I think there's like this helpless feeling.
05:28I mean, we're all so close with her and we all want to help her.
05:32And like, I'm looking at us and I was thinking like, who was first in the hospital room when Hope was sick?
05:37Savannah.
05:38Who hopped on a plane when you're parents?
05:40Oh my gosh.
05:40Savannah.
05:41First person.
05:41Who was sitting by Uche?
05:43How about when your brother passed?
05:45I mean, she was there.
05:46And I was thinking this morning, I was like, what?
05:48You know, they say like, love is patient.
05:51Like, love is kind.
05:53Like, we'll be patient.
05:55And put prayers up.
05:56And, you know, that's what we can do.
05:58It's like a feeling of helplessness.
05:59Yeah.
05:59And we're not helpless because it's prayer, it's hope.
06:03We got that.
06:03Prayer and hope.
06:04Uh-huh.
06:05Prayer and hope.
06:05Prayers and hope.
06:06Exactly what the family is asking for.
06:09And Liz joins us now live.
06:11Liz, we are learning about a possible vehicle of interest in this case.
06:16Yeah, Tom, that's right.
06:17We should stress that we do not know if ultimately this is going to be connected to Nancy Guthrie.
06:21But NBC News has learned that law enforcement received a tip about a possible vehicle or vehicles of interest at a local Circle K gas station.
06:29A spokesperson for Circle K says that officials did show up at their store and reviewed their surveillance footage.
06:36And they are now cooperating with the investigation.
06:38Tom.
06:40We hope and pray that's a potential lead there.
06:43All right, Liz, we thank you for that.
06:44I want to bring in Tom Winter.
06:45And, Tom, you've been talking to law enforcement sources all day.
06:49What can you tell us about this new message we know about?
06:51Sure, Tom.
06:52So three officials briefed on this letter tell NBC News that it came into a local station, KOLD-TV, earlier today.
06:58And they notified law enforcement immediately.
07:01Officials say confirming the authenticity and origin of the email will take some time, though.
07:06That's because this email and the one sent earlier this week were both sent in ways that make them very difficult to trace.
07:13So not only are investigators trying to confirm if they are both authentic, but they're working to determine if they were sent from the same account, as well as if they actually came from whoever took Nancy Guthrie over six days ago.
07:26All of this takes time, and it's already been an incredibly agonizing wait for the Guthrie family, Tom.
07:33It has.
07:34Okay, Tom Winter with that new reporting.
07:36Tom, we thank you.
07:37We're going to take a turn now in the broadcast to the Olympics.
07:40The games are now officially underway.
07:43Stephanie Gosk is in Milan for us and has all the highlights from the opening ceremony, which wrapped up just moments ago.
07:48Let the games begin.
07:53Milan's 100-year-old San Siro Stadium exploding in a celebration of winter sports.
07:58Inside San Siro, we're ready.
08:00And Italian culture.
08:04Embracing the theme of harmony, global superstar Mariah Carey singing the classic Volare entirely in Italian.
08:12The opening ceremony launching the first Olympic Games officially hosted by two cities.
08:17The cauldrons 250 miles apart in Milan and Cortina lit simultaneously.
08:23The U.S. team joining the parade of nations in long white coats and sweaters with stars and stripes.
08:29While speed skater and flag bearer Aaron Jackson's family watched from Ocala, Florida.
08:37Some of the athletes have already started competing.
08:42Figure skaters taking to the ice in the team event.
08:45Married U.S. ice dancing pair Madison Chalk and Evan Bates putting on a nearly flawless performance to Lennie Kravitz.
08:52Absolutely fantastic!
08:56Followed by pairs team Ellie Cam and Danny O'Shea and Alyssa Liu, who felt mixed about her skate.
09:03There's some things I wish I could have done better, but I'm not going to be a Debbie Downer.
09:07I still did really good.
09:09Team USA finished day one in the lead.
09:11The skaters just wrapped up.
09:13The way the team competition works is there are eight sessions.
09:16It's the combined total score that determines the winner.
09:19Tomorrow is going to be the men's singles short program, and it could be the first time we see the quad god himself, Ilya Malin.
09:27In Cortina, the women's downhill briefly stalled because of fog.
09:30After a quick line dance, it lifted.
09:33And Lindsey Vaughn gave that knee a spin, testing out its stability after rupturing her ACL.
09:41Hope is also building for the U.S. mixed doubles curling team.
09:45Corey Dropkin and Corey Tesey now undefeated in the round robin stage.
09:50Getting caught up in the excitement, Dropkin's mom and Snoop Dogg.
09:54I looked over, and I saw him smiling at me, and then he put his arm around my mom.
09:58You can already feel that Olympic excitement.
10:01Stephanie joins us tonight from Milan.
10:03And, Stephanie, the first medals will be handed out tomorrow?
10:08Yeah, that's right, Tom.
10:09In Bormio, you have the men's downhill.
10:11They're going to have medals.
10:13But keep your eye on the Big Air competition in snowboarding.
10:17Ollie Martin, 17 years old, the youngest guy on the Big Air Slope style team, he qualified
10:23for the finals, and he could be an outlier and a sleeper and a medal winner tomorrow.
10:31Stephanie Gosk for us from Milan.
10:33Stephanie, thank you.
10:34And we're here in San Francisco tonight because of Super Bowl Sunday, now just two days away,
10:39and the security in place around the big game is just massive.
10:43Steve Patterson saw it up close.
10:44Tonight, the air above Super Bowl 60, protected by military might, backed up by deadly force.
10:52Armed Air Force F-15 jets locked and loaded for potential threats.
10:5730 nautical miles of airspace around the stadium, close to all traffic.
11:01The Coast Guard patrolling the waters near Levi's Stadium.
11:05And Black Hawk helicopters ready to deploy tactical teams at a moment's notice.
11:11Customs and Border Protection's air and marine operation keeps a constant
11:14vigil, monitoring the ground, monitoring the ground, prepared for low and slow threats, like aircraft or even drones.
11:19The Super Bowl is a SEER 1 event.
11:22It's one of the most complicated security operations all year.
11:25Thousands of law enforcement officers all coming together to keep this area secure.
11:31With an estimated 1.3 million people flying through San Francisco's International Airport for the big game,
11:36taking part in more than 250 events before kickoff, police here focused on a strong ground game.
11:42All days off being canceled.
11:45Everyone's been deployed out to work.
11:46We're really saturating the city with ground-level police officers.
11:50Thanks, guys.
11:51Thank you for being out here.
11:52Appreciate you guys.
11:53San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie is proud to say crime in his city dropped 25 percent last year.
11:58We met up with him at the police department's state-of-the-art real-time investigation center.
12:03Dozens of digital-age operators using a fleet of cameras and drones to spot threats.
12:08The message that we are sending to the world is that you don't come to San Francisco to commit crime any longer.
12:15We're going to catch you and we're going to prosecute you.
12:17And they're doing incredible work here.
12:20And Steve joins us now live here in San Francisco.
12:23So, Steve, what do we know about the possibility of any ICE activity on Sunday during the big game?
12:27Tom, right now what we know is what the NFL is telling us, which is that they are very confident there is no immigration activity planned during the Super Bowl at this time.
12:35All right, Steve Patterson first.
12:36Steve, good to see you here.
12:38This brutal winter in the eastern half of the country is about to get even worse.
12:42Ninety-four million people are under extreme cold alerts as the most frigid air of the season is set to blast into the mid-Atlantic and northeast this weekend.
12:50It will feel as cold as 20 to 40 degrees below zero in some parts.
12:55All right, we want to turn now to that racist video of the Obamas that President Trump's Truth Social account had reposted, then deleted, following bipartisan outrage.
13:05Here's Garrett Haig.
13:07Tonight, President Trump speaking out following that rare reversal, taking down a video reposted by his social media account.
13:14After the Senate's only black Republican, South Carolina's Tim Scott, a strong Trump supporter, called the decision to repost it, quote, the most racist thing I've seen out of this White House.
13:26I didn't make a mistake.
13:27I mean, I look at a lot of thousands of things.
13:30And I looked at the beginning of it.
13:34It was fine.
13:35Nobody knew that that was in the end.
13:37The AI-generated video depicting Barack and Michelle Obama as apes was reposted by the president's Truth Social account just before midnight and deleted this morning.
13:47White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt initially defended reposting the video, writing,
13:51This is from an Internet meme video depicting President Trump as the king of the jungle and Democrats as characters from The Lion King.
13:59Please stop the fake outrage.
14:01But after Scott's stinging criticism and more Republicans piling on, the abrupt U-turn, with a White House official telling NBC News a, quote, staffer erroneously made the initial repost.
14:12It comes after Tom pressed the president about inflammatory posts he amplifies on Truth Social, including about election integrity.
14:19He tweeted out some theories about Italians and satellites.
14:22I mean, do you believe that stuff?
14:23No, no.
14:24No, I didn't.
14:26I sometimes will retweet.
14:28Yeah.
14:28All as a New York Times analysis of satellite images shows Iran appears to have made only limited fixes to major nuclear sites destroyed by the U.S.
14:37The president also told Tom Iran is looking to rebuild.
14:41Are they trying to restart the nuclear program?
14:43Well, I heard that they are.
14:44And if they do, and I let them know, if they do, we're going to send them right back and do their job again.
14:49Garrett Haake, NBC News, the White House.
14:51And you can see more of my interview with President Trump on Super Bowl Sunday right here on NBC.
14:56When we return in 60 seconds, no ACL, no problem.
15:01Lindsey Vonn flying down the mountain today in her bid for one more Olympic gold.
15:05What the skiing legend told me about her unprecedented comeback.
15:09That's next.
15:10We are back now with more on Lindsey Vonn's Olympic comeback and her decision to fight through an ACL tear to compete one more time.
15:20I caught up with Vonn just before she headed to Italy.
15:23Here we go with bid number 10, Lindsey Vonn.
15:25We've been waiting for her to push out of the start gate.
15:27What a difference a week makes.
15:29Smooth in the turns.
15:31Watch Lindsey Vonn fly down a mountain going 75 miles an hour during a training run in Cortina today.
15:38Lindsey Vonn makes it to the finish line.
15:41Exactly one week after crashing in Switzerland.
15:44Lindsey Vonn has crashed out.
15:47Another nightmare in Crumontana.
15:49Oh, no.
15:50The 41-year-old says even a ruptured ACL won't stop her from racing on Sunday.
15:56I will do everything in my power to be in that starting gate.
15:58Vonn is no stranger to injuries, something we talked about when we caught up before the games.
16:05The sport's tough.
16:06It's grueling.
16:06It beats up your body besides being incredibly dangerous.
16:09How do you push through that?
16:11I don't know.
16:12I think I just look at it as part of the sport.
16:14You know, it's something that you have to deal with.
16:16Your body is going to get beat up.
16:17Football players don't complain if they get bashed.
16:20They don't complain about that.
16:21That's just our sport.
16:22Oh, and Lindsey Vonn goes down!
16:24In 2019, a string of brutal injuries.
16:27And she is down!
16:29And grueling recoveries pushed Vonn into retirement.
16:33Five years later, she had a partial knee replacement.
16:36Her other knee, and that changed everything.
16:39I was so happy.
16:41It was the first time I was able to ski without pain in so, so long.
16:46Soon after, she made a bold choice.
16:48She would return to competition.
16:50Did you call anybody in your life to say, hey, I think I'm going to do this again?
16:53Well, I wasn't sure what my dad was going to say, so I sent him an email.
16:59An email?
17:00Yeah.
17:01He's a lawyer, so I'm like, okay, dad, I want you to sit and process this before we speak
17:06on the phone.
17:07And he responded, you know, Lindsey, I'm your father, and I know you.
17:12And this surprises me zero.
17:14Oh, wow.
17:15Lindsey Vonn now!
17:16He's absolutely flying!
17:18Her unprecedented comeback, all building to this, her fifth Olympics, 24 years after
17:24her debut at the Games.
17:26You probably haven't heard much of this, girl.
17:28That's because she's only 17 years old.
17:31Is there anything that's similar to that teenager who was so competitive, who was a prodigy, and
17:35you now, what is the same?
17:37I'm the same person.
17:38I'm just a girl from Minnesota that wants to be in Olympic skier.
17:42Go on, Lindsey!
17:42I've grown, and I've learned a lot, but I am the same little girl that just loves
17:48to go fast.
17:49But even before her ACL tear, Vonn had plenty of doubters.
17:53Some of your fellow racers have been critical.
17:56Some have even sort of called you crazy for doing this.
17:59What do you say to them?
18:01I mean, listen, I race downhill.
18:02I'm going 85 miles an hour down a mountain.
18:04Of course, I'm crazy.
18:05But what bothered me, I think, was that they thought that my life outside of skiing wasn't
18:09fulfilling enough.
18:10I don't need to be doing this, but I'm doing it because I enjoy it, and I know that I can
18:14still be competitive.
18:15So, my answer is in my results, I guess.
18:19And she has taken the lead!
18:20Before her injury, Vonn was at the top of her game and expected to contend for gold.
18:25Lindsey Vonn, 41 and fabulous!
18:29She knows her latest injury will make it harder to achieve that storybook ending, but she
18:35says she's still determined to try.
18:37I don't think I would have come back to the Olympics if it wasn't in Cortina, to be honest.
18:43It's a special place for me, and I hope it's a great way for me to close out my career.
18:48Lindsey Vonn not giving up.
18:50We're back in a moment with the fiery crash caught on camera on one of the busiest highways
18:55in the country.
18:56That's next.
18:59And welcome back.
19:00Actor Timothy Busfield has been indicted by a New Mexico grand jury on child sex abuse
19:05charges.
19:06Busfield was arrested earlier this year on accusations of abusing two young boys who
19:11appeared on a Fox series that Busfield directed and acted in.
19:15Busfield's attorney called the case unsound and says he will fight those charges.
19:18This is developing tonight.
19:20Police in Georgia say rapper Lil Jon's 27-year-old son, Nathan Smith, also known as DJ Young Slade,
19:28was found dead in a pond.
19:30Officials say the cause of death is still to be determined, but that the investigation does
19:34not suggest foul play.
19:36And look at this dramatic video of a car engulfed in flames shutting down parts of I-95 in Florida.
19:41You see that wall of fire across the road from the burning car.
19:45You even see cars driving right through the massive inferno.
19:47All right, when we come back tonight here on Nightly News, it's the moment we've all been
19:51waiting for.
19:53Team USA back and bigger than ever.
20:00Finally tonight, at a time of such deep division in our country, this weekend, Americans will
20:05come together.
20:06We'll come together to watch the Super Bowl.
20:08Here in San Francisco, two teams from opposite coasts uniting the country for at least a few
20:14hours.
20:14And we'll join together to cheer on Team USA in the Olympics.
20:18It was such a powerful moment today when the American athletes entered during the Parade
20:23of Nations.
20:24232 athletes from nearly every corner of this great country.
20:28All there because they spent their lives working towards this one goal with the support of their
20:33families and their communities.
20:35And now, all of us.
20:37That's Nightly News for this Friday.
20:40I'm Tom Yamas.
20:41I'll be right back here tomorrow, live from the side of the Super Bowl and Monday, live
20:45from the Olympics.
