01:55Nightly News starts right now.
01:58This is NBC Nightly News with Tom Yamez.
02:05And good evening.
02:06We begin tonight with possibly the biggest night yet for Team USA at the Winter Olympics.
02:10Two of the most stunning gold medal wins of these games happening back to back.
02:15Late today, the comeback story of all comeback stories.
02:19Alyssa Liu, who retired four years ago, not only returned to the ice, but she dominated.
02:25Nailing her free skate to stand atop the podium as the Star Spangled Banner played.
02:31A gold medal is always a huge moment, but she is now the first American woman to win an individual
02:37figure skating gold in 24 years.
02:40And imagine being Megan Keller, the American hockey player from Michigan.
02:44And you're in the gold medal game of the Olympics when it's sudden death, overtime.
02:49You're handing the puck and you do this.
03:02You can feel that energy, that game-winning goal as the U.S. trailed until the last two minutes of
03:08the game.
03:09Today's domination in Italy pushing Team USA up the medal count.
03:13Look at this.
03:14The U.S. is now in second place with just a few more days of competition.
03:18Our Stephanie Gosk at the rink in Milan tonight for all the action.
03:22Tonight, Alyssa Liu is Team USA's golden girl.
03:26Smashing a 20-year medal drought for the U.S. in one of the marquee events of the Winter Games.
03:31Liu rising to the moment with a flawless skate and a huge smile.
03:35Now, a two-time Olympic gold medalist.
03:40I did exactly what I wanted to do.
03:43Even like my ending, I had it all planned out and I remembered to do everything.
03:48So, I don't know, I'm really happy and grateful.
03:51Liu retired from the sport at 16, but came back two years ago.
03:54Her comeback now getting its storybook ending.
03:58I never thought to imagine something like this or dreamt of it.
04:01My dreams were complete today.
04:03Amber Glenn came in looking for redemption after a disastrous fall in the short program.
04:09And she got it.
04:10A strong skate with just one bobble near the end, leading Glenn to mouth so close.
04:16Statement made by Amber Glenn.
04:18I felt like I had nothing and everything to prove.
04:24It's been a very hard few weeks here and I wanted to do this for me.
04:30Finishing in fifth place after mistakes by a number of other skaters.
04:34There was a far more bruising battle taking place on the ice across town in women's hockey.
04:39USA versus Canada.
04:40A time-honored rivalry that once again did not disappoint.
04:44The U.S. has dominated these Winter Games, but Canada came in hot.
04:48Scoring in the second period.
04:50And the U.S. women struggled to answer.
04:53Then with just two minutes to go, Captain Hillary Knight, a five-time Olympian, scored the tying goal.
04:58Score!
05:00And sending it into overtime.
05:02Megan Keller seizing the momentum, scoring the winning goal.
05:05Bust to the net.
05:06Score!
05:08The United States wins gold and gold.
05:11The game-winning goal.
05:13What went through your head when you realized you scored it?
05:15Not a whole lot.
05:17Honestly, just finding the closest teammate, trying to rip gloves off, helmets off, and hug one another.
05:23What a moment.
05:24And with that, Stephanie joins us now live from outside the hockey arena.
05:27Steph, take us inside those final moments.
05:30And tonight's medals, boosting Team USA overall in a big way.
05:36Yeah, sure.
05:37You know, Tom, the Canadian fans, and there were a lot of them in there tonight, they thought their team
05:42had it wrapped up.
05:43And then Hillary Knight tied it, sending it into that electrifying overtime when Megan Keller scored the winning goal.
05:49It capped off an incredible day for Team USA, rising up to second in the overall medal count.
05:54And we're not done here.
05:56The U.S. men play here at this arena tomorrow against Slovakia in the semifinals, Tom.
06:00All right.
06:00We look forward to that.
06:01Stephanie, we thank you.
06:02You can see Alyssa lose full performance in that medal ceremony tonight at 8 p.m. right here on NBC
06:08and Peacock.
06:09Our other major story, of course, tonight, the first images of former Prince Andrew released from custody.
06:15He was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office connected to his years of friendship with Jeffrey Epstein.
06:22Was he funneling the disgraced financier U.K. trade secrets?
06:26Raf Sanchez with the former prince under arrest.
06:30Tonight, a haunted-looking former Prince Andrew released after nearly 12 hours in police custody.
06:36Driven away from a police station in eastern England after his unprecedented arrest in the early hours of his 66th
06:43birthday.
06:44The king's younger brother taken into custody on suspicion of misconduct in public office,
06:49while authorities searched his house in Norfolk and his former royal residence near Windsor Castle.
06:55Andrew has not been charged with a crime, and authorities have not made public the details of the allegations against
07:01him.
07:02But his release doesn't mean he's in the clear, and he could still face charges.
07:07Police tonight saying he is under investigation.
07:10It comes weeks after the Justice Department released emails Andrew allegedly sent to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein in
07:172010.
07:17Andrew was serving as a U.K. trade envoy at the time, and appears to have forwarded Epstein British government
07:23documents on trade policy.
07:25Also in the files, these photos of Andrew kneeling over an unidentified woman.
07:30It's not clear why.
07:32King Charles was not told in advance about today's arrest, a palace official tells NBC News.
07:37You have any reaction to the arrest of your brother, sir?
07:40Your majesty, how are you feeling after your brother's arrest?
07:43Saying in a statement, I have learned with the deepest concern the news about Andrew Mountbatten, Windsor.
07:48Let me state clearly, the law must take its course.
07:51Has the royal family ever faced a crisis like this before?
07:54Not in modern memory, certainly not in the past 400 years or so.
07:59In fact, the last time a royal was arrested was in 1647, when King Charles I was captured in the
08:06English Civil War.
08:08Andrew stepped back from royal duties in 2019, following this interview with the BBC about his relationship with Epstein.
08:15But you were staying at the house of a convicted sex offender.
08:19It was a convenient place to stay.
08:21Andrew has consistently denied any wrongdoing in his association with Epstein.
08:26He denied having ever met Virginia Roberts Dufresne, who said she was forced to have sex with Andrew when she
08:33was 17.
08:34She died by suicide last year.
08:37Today, her family calling the arrest a vindication.
08:40It's a very proud moment for us.
08:42Andrew was stripped of his royal titles last year, as Dufresne's posthumous memoir was published.
08:48Back in the U.S., some of the highest profile names are also under scrutiny.
08:52Bill Gates is skipping an A.I. summit in India, as questions swirl over his ties to Epstein.
08:58And Casey Wasserman, the chair of the 2028 Olympics, is facing calls to resign and selling his talent agency because
09:05of his links to Ghislaine Maxwell.
09:07Neither man has been accused of criminal wrongdoing.
09:10Andrew's arrest today, the latest chapter in his long fall from grace, and the international fallout from the Epstein files.
09:19And Raf joins us live from Buckingham Palace tonight.
09:21Raf, could the former prince face prison time?
09:27Potentially, Tom, yes.
09:28Misconduct in public office is a serious offense.
09:30In the most extreme cases, it can lead to life imprisonment.
09:34That doesn't seem likely here.
09:36And it could still be weeks before prosecutors make a final decision on whether or not to bring charges.
09:41Tom?
09:42Raf Sanchez for us.
09:43Raf, thank you.
09:44Back home now in the unrelenting snowstorm out west, as rescuers try desperately to reach that final missing skier after
09:51an avalanche that killed eight people.
09:53Morgan Chesky and his team in Truckee, California, again for us tonight.
09:57Tonight, near whiteout conditions in California, causing havoc on mountain highways.
10:03Stranding drivers and leaving thousands without power, forcing some schools to even close.
10:08In the high Sierra, nearly two feet of fresh snow, complicating an already dangerous recovery mission after California's deadliest avalanche
10:17ever.
10:17One skier still missing with eight others confirmed dead, as avalanche warnings only increase.
10:23And this is why that avalanche warning has been extended.
10:27Snow now for days on end that you can barely walk through, much less reach a remote area tucked away
10:34in the Sierra backcountry.
10:35Authorities not yet releasing any victim names, pledging to bring everyone back home.
10:41Best describe it, tragic's the word that first comes to my mind, and the second word is impossible.
10:48We are facing worse avalanche risk than when the actual initial avalanche occurred.
10:55Sugar Bowl Academy, a local ski school, saying multiple members of their community were lost.
11:00However, officials say no children were involved.
11:04Blackbird Mountain Guides temporarily suspending operations, confirming three of their own were among the victims.
11:10In Utah, authorities say an avalanche gave way, killing a young girl.
11:14But yesterday, officials say one father died while snowmobiling with his son in yet another avalanche.
11:20Tonight in Truckee, as search and rescue teams wait for conditions to improve, a close-knit community left in mourning.
11:30And tonight, with this seemingly nonstop snowstorm that only continues to pound this region, authorities looking for any possible way
11:37to reach those still on the mountain,
11:39telling me they're looking at building a snow helicopter landing pad or even cutting an entirely new trail down that
11:46mountain.
11:47Tom?
11:48Morgan Chesky for us.
11:49Morgan, we thank you for that.
11:50There's some video that's just come into the newsroom we want to show you.
11:53These are tornadoes that are touching down in Illinois.
11:56This extreme weather is now on the move tonight.
11:58I want to bring in Bill Karens.
12:00And, Bill, it's going to be dangerous tonight.
12:01Yeah, especially south of Indianapolis, maybe the Bloomington area.
12:04We've already had a couple tornadoes reported in Illinois.
12:06You just saw those pictures.
12:07And we still have active tornado warnings.
12:10Bloomington, you've got about maybe a half hour until this storm gets near you.
12:13This is a storm that has a history of producing tornadoes.
12:16As far as the nor'easter goes, we're still thinking this is going to be a very intense storm.
12:20But instead of going up the coast, it goes off the coast.
12:23It looks more like a glancing blow.
12:25So still some snow.
12:26But it does not at this time look like it would be an epic storm.
12:29All right, Bill, we thank you for that.
12:30Now to the urgent search for Nancy Guthrie.
12:32For the first time, we're taking you inside the 911 call center where operators are being inundated with thousands of
12:39tips.
12:39Liz Kreutz is there for us.
12:41Tonight, the agonizing search for Nancy Guthrie stretching into its 19th day.
12:46Inside the Pima County Sheriff's 911 communication center, this is where dispatchers are fielding the thousands of tips pouring in.
12:53We've been inundated with phone calls.
12:55But with massive public interest comes massive distraction.
12:58The department says the system is getting bogged down with callers sharing everything from theories to premonitions.
13:03If you're thinking about calling in a tip or lead or if you have specific information regarding the case,
13:09I ask that you stop and take a moment and think, is this tip viable?
13:14Is it credible?
13:15What we don't want are the opinions and the thoughts and kind of wondering if investigators are doing A, B,
13:24C, and D.
13:25Currently, 400 investigators are working the case, canvassing Tucson, looking for clues.
13:30Part of what makes this search so challenging is just how vast the area around Nancy's home is.
13:35You can get a sense of it here.
13:36Pima County is about 9,000 square miles.
13:39That is larger than the entire state of New Jersey.
13:42And a lot of it looks like this.
13:43Massive mountain ranges and the Sonoran Desert that stretches for miles.
13:48What do you make of this?
13:49Ballistics expert John Correa says the suspect's holster, which he says appears to be a universal fit, indicates to him
13:55this isn't someone familiar with firearms.
13:57Universal fit means it doesn't fit anything well.
13:59That holster is so cheap that you won't even find that in the bargain bin at the gun store.
14:07And Tom, that unknown DNA is still being analyzed tonight.
14:10Meanwhile, neighbors continue to leave these messages of hope outside the home.
14:14Tom.
14:15Everyone waiting for those DNA results.
14:16All right, Liz, we thank you for that.
14:18In the Middle East, a staggering display of U.S. power now moving into position as those high-stakes nuclear
14:24talks with Iran appear to hit a wall.
14:27Garrett Haake is following this first.
14:28And Garrett, the president now with a new timeline tonight?
14:31That's right, Tom.
14:32The U.S. will soon complete one of the biggest buildups of American military force in the Middle East in
14:36decades, with aircraft carriers, submarines, air defense systems, and fighter jets all moving into position.
14:42All the pieces will soon be in place to conduct sustained strikes against Iran.
14:47But the president said today he's still pushing for a negotiated nuclear deal with the country, and he's willing to
14:52wait a bit longer for it, telling reporters Iran has a roughly 10- to 15-day window to make
14:57a deal.
14:58Both sides claimed progress after rare direct talks earlier this week, but there's no sign of any imminent diplomatic breakthrough.
15:06Tom.
15:07All right, Garrett, we thank you.
15:08We have exclusive new details about a controversial push from ICE to purchase a luxury Boeing jet.
15:14The price tag?
15:15$70 million.
15:17All of it taxpayer money.
15:18Julia Ainsley is here now.
15:20Julia, what are you learning about this jet?
15:21Tom, we've obtained pictures from inside the Boeing 737 MAX 8 Secretary of Homeland Security.
15:28Christy Noem has recently been leasing.
15:31ICE is now waiting on the White House to approve the $70 million purchase of this plane, which comes equipped
15:36with a bedroom, multiple showers, large-screen TVs, and a bar.
15:41A DHS spokesperson said the plane will also be used for deportations.
15:45But two DHS officials involved in the purchase say they're skeptical the plane will be used for anything more than
15:51Noem's travel.
15:52It's worth noting DHS already has a plane for the secretary.
15:56It's owned by the Coast Guard and was recently upgraded to a Gulfstream jet.
16:01Tom.
16:01All right, Julia Ainsley, with that exclusive tonight.
16:04When we return in 60 seconds, the stolen ambulance chase across Wisconsin.
16:08The surprise police got when they finally ended the suspect's joyride.
16:13You'll see what happened.
16:14That's next.
16:16We're back now with a high-speed ambulance chase caught on camera after a suspect stole it with a patient
16:22still in the back.
16:23Here's Maggie Vespa with the video.
16:25Come on, with your hands up!
16:26Tonight, dramatic body camera video out of Wisconsin showing the chaos capping a high-speed chase.
16:32Hands up!
16:33Hands up!
16:34With the driver of that stolen ambulance emerging completely naked.
16:39The video blurred by Wisconsin Rapids police.
16:41This guy jumped into the driver's seat, took off with the ambulance totally naked?
16:46That's correct.
16:47So it's never happened in my career.
16:50Investigators say 37-year-old Benjamin Feltz hijacked the ambulance Tuesday evening as two paramedics were loading a 50-year
16:58-old woman into the back.
17:00Sold the ambulance.
17:01There's a piece that's in the back.
17:02You see officers repeatedly try to stop him, deploying spikes, which he dodges.
17:09Speed's 65 miles an hour.
17:10The chase lasting 40 minutes.
17:13Court documents saying the patient pleaded for her life, telling Feltz, I'm dying of kidney disease.
17:19Finally, one set of spikes works.
17:21You see the ambulance crash into a field.
17:24The patient unharmed.
17:26Driver of the vehicle!
17:28Shut it off now!
17:29The investigators say Feltz later admitted to consuming a large amount of a chemical cleaning agent.
17:35Hands up!
17:36His lawyer not responding to our request for comment.
17:38He faces nearly a dozen charges.
17:41Maggie Vespa, NBC News.
17:44All right.
17:44We're back in a moment with wild video of a car crashing into a school bus.
17:48Look at this.
17:48Then getting stuck underneath it.
17:50What happened to the driver?
17:51That's next.
17:53Welcome back.
17:54The head of NASA says the lives of two astronauts who were stuck on the International Space Station were put
18:00at risk by engineering failures and NASA managers who should have never let them lift off.
18:05Boeing, the company behind the Starliner that got stuck, says it's working to fix the spacecraft so it can safely
18:11carry astronauts eventually.
18:13And take a look at this video out of South Florida.
18:15You see the Jaguar there speeding down the road, but then it slams right in the back of a school
18:21bus getting wedged underneath it.
18:23This happened near Fort Myers, Florida.
18:25Authorities say no students were on board luckily.
18:28Both the bus driver and the Jaguar driver only had minor injuries.
18:32Okay.
18:33When we come back tonight, it's not their first go around.
18:35For many, it's not their second.
18:37The older athletes making it look easy from the Olympics.
18:40That's next.
18:48A look tonight at the stunning Olympic cauldron there in Milan, where there are just a few days left of
18:55the Winter Olympics.
18:56And tonight, we wanted to spotlight some of the athletes at these games who are proving age is just a
19:01number.
19:02Here's Molly Hunter.
19:04No matter how much training you put in, sometimes there's no match for decades of experience.
19:11Just ask five-time Olympians Alana Myers-Taylor and Kaylee Humphreys.
19:17Taking gold and bronze in the monobob this week at ages 41 and 40.
19:22You get a lot of people that like to write you off.
19:24You know, as soon as you reach 40, it's all downhill from there.
19:27And I think Alana and I are both proof that that's not true.
19:30On the ice at 54 years old, Rich Ronin made history subbing in on the men's U.S. curling team,
19:36becoming the oldest ever American Winter Olympian.
19:40And this week, bringing the energy to the Tofana.
19:4547-year-old alpine skier Sarah Schlepper suited up for Team USA at four Olympics and three more for her
19:51adopted Mexico.
19:55This year, her 18-year-old son, an Olympian too, becoming the first mother-son duo to compete at the
20:02same Winter Game.
20:03It's amazing.
20:04And 44-year-old American snowboarder Nick Baumgartner is a fan favorite.
20:09It takes every bit of me and every bit of effort that I have to be able to compete with
20:13these kids.
20:14You see how fast they are.
20:15He won gold in Beijing at 40, no medals this time.
20:18Instead, winning thousands of new followers on social media.
20:22Am I too old to be here?
20:23No, of course not.
20:24Does it look weird that I'm here?
20:26Someone said that this is my last Olympics.
20:28Absolutely not.
20:29This is so much fun for a 44-year-old.
20:31I love it.
20:32I love you guys.
20:33You'll see me again.
20:35Molly Hunter, NBC News, Cortina.
20:39Nick Baumgartner going strong.
20:41Primetime Olympics coverage kicks off tonight at 8 p.m. on NBC and Peacock.
20:47And oh, what a night it is.
20:48That's nightly news for this Thursday.
20:49I'm Tom Yamas.
20:50Thanks so much for watching.
20:52Tonight and always, we're here for you.
20:54Good night.
20:59We thank you for watching.
21:01And remember, stay updated on breaking news and top stories on the NBC News app
