01:41the star-spangled banner play.
01:44Nightly news starts right now.
01:45This is NBC Nightly News.
01:49Live from the Winter Olympics in Italy.
01:55Reporting tonight from Milan, here's Tom Yames.
02:00Good evening from Milan, where there was heartbreak on the ice tonight.
02:04A collective gasp went up from figure skating fans across America and the world when Ilya Malinan, the American skating
02:12powerhouse seemingly destined for gold, failed to medal today in spectacular fashion.
02:18We'll hear from him about what went wrong in a moment.
02:21And we'll have more on that growing controversy over judging and ice dancing.
02:25Will the Americans now appeal?
02:27But we begin tonight once again in Tucson and the latest in the search for the suspect in the kidnapping
02:33of Nancy Guthrie.
02:34Today, the sheriff revealing new details to NBC News about how many gloves have been found and how many viable
02:40leads they have.
02:42It comes amid criticism that the sheriff and the FBI aren't working together seamlessly.
02:47Our Liz Croyd sat down with the sheriff and starts us off tonight.
02:52Tonight, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos speaking with us for the first time in a week about the investigation into
02:57Nancy Guthrie's disappearance.
02:59We've got some good leads today that we're working on that we hope pan out.
03:05Hundreds of detectives are fanned out across the Catalina foothills, scouring the desert floor for any potential evidence, like gloves.
03:12The sheriff says they found a pair two miles from Nancy's home.
03:15Two miles away is the closest we have.
03:17Is there another pair of gloves?
03:18There's a lot of gloves.
03:19Those gloves are all being sent to a private crime lab, he says the department has used for decades, and
03:25that's been processing the DNA for this case from the beginning.
03:28But it's a decision that has come under some scrutiny amid reports of tension between the FBI and Sheriff's Department,
03:34including that the sheriff is blocking the FBI's access to evidence.
03:37The FBI and the Pima County Sheriff's Department are connected at the hip.
03:42That has not changed.
03:43In this case of blocking evidence from the FBI, that's just so far from the truth.
03:51We asked him why not send the DNA samples to the FBI's lab.
03:54There's gloves found.
03:56So FBI says, okay, so should we send them to the FBI lab?
03:59I said, no, let's send it all to our lab.
04:01Let's just keep it all in one place.
04:04Our lab does good work.
04:05Their lab does good work.
04:07We talked to the FBI.
04:08They said, yep, makes sense.
04:09Thanks, Sheriff.
04:10And we move on to the next problem.
04:12So you're basically saying this is maybe one person that had a problem with it, but you feel like...
04:16You know, we've got 400 officers out there working together.
04:19They're not always going to see eye to eye.
04:21Are you sharing the results with the FBI?
04:24Absolutely, and they are with us.
04:25Like the surveillance video, which the FBI used to create a profile of the suspect.
04:305'9 to 5'10 average build with this backpack that's exclusively sold at Walmart.
04:35Do we know hair color or race or anything like that?
04:38You have the same video I have.
04:42That's all we have.
04:43I assume you guys have been in touch with Walmart to figure out.
04:46There's all kinds of investigative efforts into all of that.
04:49Nearly two weeks since Nancy's disappearance, so many questions still unanswered.
04:54There's no vehicle of interest and little surveillance footage.
04:57Nano says he's hoping more will be retrieved from other cameras outside Nancy's home.
05:02Are you close to finding this person?
05:03We think we're getting there.
05:05We think we're getting closer.
05:06Like what, a day, two, three?
05:08I mean, people, it is, we're day 13 now.
05:10I know, I know, but you know what?
05:12Some of these cases go for months.
05:14Some of these cases can go for years.
05:16We're prepared that whatever that time is, we will find this person.
05:21That we know.
05:23And with that, Liz joins us now live.
05:26Liz, you asked the sheriff about that delivery driver who was detained but then released earlier this week.
05:31Did he explain what happened there?
05:35Yeah, Tom, what he told us is that there were several things about him that built up enough probable cause
05:40in their mind for them to go ask and then get a search warrant.
05:42One of them is that as a delivery driver, he was in the area of Nancy's home.
05:46But the sheriff says, well, they have released him.
05:48In his mind, nobody right now is cleared since there's still no suspect.
05:52Tom.
05:54Liz Kreutz for us.
05:55And a reminder for the latest developments on this story from a trusted source, you can go to NBCnews.com
06:0024-7.
06:02All right, now to a stunning turn of events here in Milan where quad god Ilya Malinan, the favorite for
06:08gold, struggled through his free skate and failed to medal, dropping all the way to eighth place.
06:15Tonight, a shock in men's figure skating.
06:17Oh, my gosh.
06:18Oh, my goodness.
06:19American Ilya Malinan, the quad god, finishing off the podium, usually radiating confidence.
06:27Tonight, it disappeared.
06:29His free skate filled with uncharacteristic mistakes and falls.
06:33The moment his program ended, Malinan held his face in his hands.
06:38The crushing disappointment sinking in.
06:41That was shocking.
06:43He is shocked.
06:44This is a lot to handle, and, you know, the pressure of the Olympics is, it's really something different, and
06:51I think that not a lot of people will understand that.
06:53There were tremendous expectations on the 21-year-old, as 1998 gold medalist Tara Lipinski told me earlier today.
07:01And I think for Ilya, he has the Olympic team medal, and he has every other medal he could ever
07:06want in this sport except that individual gold.
07:09But also tonight, American Max Naumov skated his final Olympic program.
07:15Naumov's parents were killed in that devastating crash over the Potomac last year.
07:20I just hope that they're proud of me as a skater and as a son.
07:26On another rink in Milan, the U.S. women's hockey team dominating Italy before the hometown crowd.
07:32She scores!
07:33Hey, guys.
07:34Lindsay Vaughn said today watching Team USA from the hospital is lifting her spirits.
07:39I'm finally feeling more like myself, but having a long, long way to go.
07:48And today, I caught up with snowboarder Chloe Kim, who just won her third Olympic medal, a silver in halfpipe.
07:55And what were you thinking as you hit the halfpipe?
07:58Oh, man, I just wanted to land.
07:59That's all I wanted to do.
08:01I think being the last person to drop is always nerve-wracking because there's such a long way.
08:06And seeing all my friends slam definitely wasn't the most reassuring thing to see.
08:11So I'm just happy I was able to put one down.
08:15Always great to speak with Chloe Kim.
08:17Tonight, we're also following the controversy rattling the figure skating world
08:20and growing questions as to whether a French judge's scores tipped the gold medal to the French ice dancing team
08:27over Team USA's Madison Chalk and Evan Bates.
08:30Stephanie Gosk has the latest.
08:32Tonight, in the wake of Madison Chalk and Evan Bates' silver medal win in ice dancing,
08:38Sensational!
08:40questions are swirling.
08:41Should they have won the gold medal instead of the French team,
08:44Laurence Fournier-Boudre and Guillaume Cizeron?
08:47Chalk and Bates fans are not holding back.
08:49I am livid, livid about the results.
08:53The French team narrowly edged out the Americans, winning by less than a point and a half.
08:59But Chalk and Bates skated cleanly.
09:01Fifteen years of practice and preparation for one night of perfection.
09:08While the French, who went last, made some minor mistakes.
09:12Watch here, a touchdown.
09:14And then there is the breakdown of the scoring for the final program.
09:17Out of nine judges, five scored Chalk and Bates higher.
09:21Three gave the French the win, but narrowly.
09:24And then there is the French judge, who scored the French pair nearly eight points higher than the Americans.
09:30A real outlier.
09:31That same judge gave outlier scores in the European championships earlier this year as well,
09:38giving the French pair a greater advantage than other judges in the competition.
09:42The day after the Olympic event, Chalk and Bates, who are married, were asked if they would appeal.
09:47I suppose we would consider it, I think skating is such a subjective sport, but I do think that for
09:57fairness, it is good when the judges are reviewed.
10:00In a statement tonight, the international governing body for figure skating telling NBC News,
10:04it is normal for there to be a range of scores given by different judges, adding it has full confidence
10:10in the scores given.
10:12Even if the fans, what do you mean, silver, say this performance was golden.
10:19And Stephanie Skoss joins us now live.
10:21Stephanie, how would an appeal play out?
10:23Well, the governing body allows a narrow element of scoring to be appealed.
10:28If it's considered subjective, it cannot be appealed.
10:31And Tom, so much of this scoring is subjective.
10:34All right, we're going to have to wait and see.
10:36Stephanie, we thank you.
10:36Good to see you.
10:37Now to that major headline from the White House.
10:39President Trump saying the fall of the Iranian regime would be the best thing that could happen
10:44as he orders another aircraft carrier to the region.
10:46Gabe Gutierrez has the late details.
10:49Tonight, President Trump is sending another aircraft carrier to the Middle East as he ramps up pressure on Iran.
10:55If we don't have a deal, we'll need it.
10:57If we have a deal, we could cut it to us.
11:00Asked about whether he wants regime change.
11:02Seems like that would be the best thing that could happen.
11:05Who would you want to take on?
11:06I don't want to talk about that.
11:08There are people.
11:09Still, the president looking to keep negotiating with Iran over its nuclear program.
11:14I think they'll be successful.
11:15And if they're not, it's going to be a bad day for Iran.
11:18Very bad.
11:20All coming weeks after the Iranian regime launched a brutal crackdown on protesters,
11:25the president has said Iran is trying to rebuild its nuclear capabilities,
11:29months after American B-2 bombers destroyed Iranian nuclear sites.
11:34Two U.S. officials familiar with the decision to send the USS Gerald Ford to the Middle East
11:38tell NBC News the aircraft carrier will now leave the Caribbean,
11:42where it had been sent in October, ahead of that stunning raid to capture Venezuela's authoritarian leader,
11:48Nicolas Maduro.
11:49The president today heading to Fort Bragg with the first lady,
11:53privately meeting with the special forces who arrested Maduro.
11:56That night, the entire world saw what the full military might,
12:01the U.S. military is capable, and that was an unbelievable operation.
12:05Gabe joins us live from the White House, and Gabe, in another headline tonight,
12:10the president is touting some positive news on the cost of living.
12:13Yes, Tom.
12:14Inflation just dropped to 2.4 percent year over year, down from 2.7 percent last month.
12:21That's close to a five-year low, beating expectations.
12:24Among the biggest price drops, the cost of gas and used cars.
12:28Tom.
12:29All right, Gabe, we thank you for that.
12:31In a major reversal, ICE tonight says two of its officers appear to have lied about a shooting in Minneapolis
12:37where one man was shot in the leg.
12:39That new statement coming after a review of video evidence.
12:42Maggie Vespa has the latest.
12:45The shooting by an ICE officer in Minneapolis last month sparked immediate protests.
12:50At the time, DHS said the officer fired in self-defense, hitting one suspect in the leg after, they said,
12:57he was attacked by multiple men.
13:00What we saw was three individuals weaponized shovels and brooms that attack an ICE officer that had to defend himself.
13:06But tonight, a stinging rebuke of two ICE officers from the acting director of the agency,
13:12who says they appear to have lied about the shooting of that Venezuelan man.
13:16Todd Lyons saying a joint review by ICE and the Department of Justice of video evidence has revealed
13:22that sworn testimony provided by two separate officers appears to have made untruthful statements,
13:28adding the unnamed officers have been immediately placed on administrative leave
13:32pending the completion of a thorough internal investigation
13:35and may face termination of employment as well as potential criminal prosecution.
13:49Tonight, an attorney for Sosa Salis says he is cooperating with an investigation into the shooting
13:58and, quote, determined to seek justice against the officer.
14:02Tom.
14:03All right, Maggie, thank you.
14:04And the showdown over ICE now set to lead to a shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security
14:09after Democrats say they won't fund that department unless ICE makes changes.
14:13Ryan Nobles joins us now live.
14:15And, Ryan, the DHS shutdown starts tonight at midnight.
14:19That's right, Tom.
14:20That's when the Department of Homeland Security runs out of money.
14:23And Democrats say they will not fund DHS without changes, including things like face masks.
14:28And so far, there's been very little progress on any talks.
14:32DHS, of course, is a sprawling department with more than 200,000 employees,
14:37and it impacts millions of Americans through agencies like FEMA, the Coast Guard, and TSA.
14:43Many of those employees will now be forced to work without pay or be furloughed during the shutdown.
14:48Meanwhile, ICE has already been fully funded through last summer's so-called Big Beautiful Bill.
14:54Congress is now on recess for at least a week, which means this shutdown will last a week or perhaps
15:00longer.
15:01Tom?
15:03Ryan Nobles on Capitol Hill for us.
15:05And we're back in just 60 seconds with the deadly shooting of a beloved figure skating coach at a Starbucks
15:10drive-thru.
15:11That's next.
15:15There is heartbreak back home tonight after a figure skating coach was gunned down at a Starbucks drive-thru.
15:21Emily Akeda has that story.
15:24Tonight, the figure skating community is mourning the sudden and shocking loss of Sam Linehan,
15:30a synchronized skater who competed on the national stage turned coach in Missouri.
15:35It's just hard to see somebody so kind and passionate and loved by so many people to be taken away.
15:47The 28-year-old was on the way to meet friends to watch the Olympics, according to Linehan's partner,
15:53and stopped at a Starbucks drive-thru.
15:55That's when investigators say Linehan was gunned down in the car around 10 a.m. Tuesday by this man,
16:01seen on surveillance in a neon safety vest and hard hat.
16:0558-year-old Keith Brown, now behind bars and held on no bond,
16:09demanded she raise her hands before he shot and killed her.
16:12He stole bank cards and her driver's license, according to court documents.
16:16Authorities say the Brazen shooting earlier this week followed two other daytime robberies
16:21that Brown's accused of on February 8th and the 6th.
16:25St. Louis Metro Police saying...
16:27We did not know that there was a pattern with this person until after the shooting occurred at the Starbucks.
16:35Brown, a convicted felon who absconded while on parole,
16:38pleading not guilty today to charges including first-degree murder,
16:42as the victim's family and friends are faced with the unfathomable.
16:46It's left a big hole in our family here.
16:50Emily Ikeda, NBC News.
16:53And we return tonight.
16:55A dramatic rescue caught on camera.
16:57A car explodes in flames after a carjacking pursuit involving a one-year-old inside.
17:03That's next.
17:05We can't see...
17:07We're back now with a dramatic rescue caught on police body cam.
17:11Look at this.
17:12An officer in Jacksonville, Florida, sprinting to that car engulfed in flames.
17:16Police pulling out a woman who was trapped inside.
17:19Police say it happened because a teenager violently carjacked another car that had a one-year-old in the backseat,
17:25colliding with the car that the woman was in.
17:28Thankfully, the child is also safe tonight.
17:30Also tonight, the au pair convicted for taking part in a double murder plot.
17:3425-year-old Juliana Perez-Bogaluez was sentenced to 10 years in prison today
17:39after she pleaded guilty to manslaughter related to a plot with Brendan Banfield to murder his wife and a stranger.
17:47The judge today calling the case the most serious manslaughter scenario the court had ever seen.
17:53And look at this remarkable video, a thief using a forklift to break into a jewelry store in Turkey.
17:58You see him there cranking up the barricade before going inside, flips over the jewelry case, and steals gold that
18:06was inside.
18:07Well, then he makes his getaway on a donkey.
18:10You heard me correctly.
18:11He's on a donkey.
18:12Police say they identified a suspect after looking at the security video.
18:16The donkey was not involved.
18:18When we come back from here in Milan, what it's like to hear the Star Spangled Banner play after winning
18:24gold.
18:25Athletes open up about the powerful moments on the podium.
18:28That's next.
18:40That's a look at the Olympic flame burning bright here in Italy where America has won four gold medals at
18:46these games.
18:46Those athletes joining a very special club of people who know what it feels like to stand atop the podium
18:53and hear the national anthem play.
19:02Hearing the first notes of the national anthem play, watching the American flag slowly begin to rise.
19:10And feeling the weight of a gold medal, heavy around your neck.
19:15It's what so many young American athletes dream of.
19:19What is it like to kind of stand on that podium and to hear the national anthem?
19:22I think it's the entire ball of yarn of emotions.
19:26They start to unravel.
19:30Speed skater Apollo Ono won two gold medals for Team USA.
19:35I remember when they began raising the flag up slowly.
19:39I remember feeling and remembering this moment of when my career began.
19:42He says he could imagine what was going through speed skater Jordan Stoll's mind when he won gold this week.
19:49Jordan maybe thought about his first times when he was a young kid on the pond in Wisconsin,
19:53that his father went out there and made this ice surface for him.
19:58For me, it was about the relationship I have with my father.
20:01He didn't have the money and the time to take me to the after-school practices.
20:05He would drive our beat-up old car through those misty Seattle morning rain,
20:09and we would go to these empty school and church parking lots.
20:12And I would skate around.
20:13That was the intentionality of, we don't have much, but you're going to figure out a way.
20:19On the podium, you can't see those early mornings, the parents' selfless sacrifices, or those long days of training.
20:26But you can see the deep pride and gratitude of a dream come true.
20:37Such an incredible feeling.
20:39And our thanks to Apollo Ono for sharing such great memories with us.
20:42Primetime coverage of the Winter Games kicks off tonight at 8 p.m. on NBC and Peacock.
20:47That's Nightly News for this Friday.
20:49I'm Tom Yamas reporting again from Milan.
20:51We thank you so much for watching.
20:53Tonight and always, we're here for you.
20:55Good night.
20:56Good night.
