00:00Tonight, we're live from Milan as Team USA begins its march towards Olympic glory.
00:07While back at home, the new video message from Savannah Guthrie as a possible ransom deadline approaches.
00:13You'll hear the urgent new plea from Savannah for anyone with any information to please come forward.
00:20Her video posted just before the final deadline in that unverified ransom note.
00:25We speak with a former hostage negotiator as Savannah and her siblings say they are willing to pay.
00:32Also tonight, triumph and tribulations at the Olympic Winter Games.
00:37What skier Lindsey Vonn just said about her horrific crash and the injuries she's now recovering from.
00:44Plus, we go one-on-one with gold medal winners Breezy Johnson and the American figure skating team.
00:50And the question tonight, why are some Olympic medals suddenly falling apart?
00:56Back home, members of Congress combing through millions of unredacted Epstein files.
01:02What they reveal.
01:03Plus, Ghislaine Maxwell pleading the fifth.
01:06Her new demand in order for her to speak up.
01:09A small plane crash landing at a busy intersection hitting multiple cars.
01:14The dramatic sound from inside the cockpit.
01:16You'll hear the pilot saying what he thought were his final words.
01:21Explosive highway heist.
01:23Armed robbers blowing up an armored truck in broad daylight.
01:27What happened next?
01:28An Atlanta Falcons rookie arrested after a police chase taken down by multiple officers.
01:35And one year since losing both parents in a plane crash.
01:38I sit down with American figure skater Maxim Naumov ahead of his Olympic debut.
01:45What it means to live out their shared dream on the ice.
01:48Nightly news starts right now.
01:51This is NBC Nightly News.
01:55Live from the Winter Olympics in Italy.
02:00Reporting tonight from Milan, here is Tom Yames.
02:03And good evening from Milan, where the Winter Olympics have begun and Team USA has already soared to great heights and experienced some painful setbacks.
02:15We have new reporting on Lindsey Vonn's condition and we'll have one-on-ones with the first American gold medal winners in a moment.
02:24Behind me here in Milan, the Duomo, one of the world's largest cathedrals, towering over this beautiful city and over these games.
02:32And it's fitting tonight as we begin with prayer.
02:35Specifically, our dear colleague, Savannah Guthrie's call for your prayers as she releases a new message.
02:41It comes with that deadline tonight from an unconfirmed ransom note in the case of her missing mother, Nancy.
02:47We'll have more on the Guthrie family now saying they will pay to get their mother back.
02:52But first, we want to play Savannah's new message just out tonight for you in full.
02:58Hi there, everybody.
02:59I wanted to come on and just share a few thoughts as we enter into another week of this nightmare.
03:13I just want to say, first of all, thank you so much for all of the prayers and the love that we have felt, my sister and brother and I.
03:29And that our mom has felt because we believe that somehow, some way she is feeling these prayers and that God is lifting her even in this moment and in this darkest place.
03:43We believe our mom is still out there.
03:51We need your help.
03:55Law enforcement is working tirelessly around the clock trying to bring her home, trying to find her.
04:01She was taken and we don't know where she was taken and we don't know where.
04:06And we need your help.
04:10So I'm coming on just to ask you, not just for your prayers, but no matter where you are, even if you're far from Tucson,
04:18if you see anything, you hear anything, if there's anything at all that seems strange to you, that you report to law enforcement.
04:31We are at an hour of desperation.
04:35And we need your help.
04:37And there have been some new developments that have just come into the newsroom.
04:41So let's get right to Liz Kreutz on the ground in Tucson with the latest on this investigation.
04:46Tonight, in that new video, Savannah making an excruciating plea.
04:50We are at an hour of desperation.
04:54And we need your help.
04:56The message posted just hours before the final deadline and that alleged ransom note sent to three news outlets last week following Nancy's disappearance.
05:03The demand, six million U.S. dollars in Bitcoin by 5 p.m. tonight.
05:09We will pay.
05:10While investigators have not yet determined if the ransom note is real, on Saturday, Savannah posted this heart-wrenching video
05:16saying she and her siblings are willing to pay despite no evidence they've received proof of life.
05:22We beg you now to return our mother to us so that we can celebrate with her.
05:28This is the only way we will have peace.
05:30What do you make of these specific words she's using?
05:33We want to have peace, celebration.
05:37Well, there could be some implication to the family in the communique that some harms come to Nancy or they've lost Nancy.
05:44I think the family leaves.
05:45Nancy could still be here, but maybe she's not.
05:48Either way, we still want to deal with you because it's important to us.
05:54Jim Cavanaugh, a former hostage negotiator, has reviewed the purported ransom note and tells us there are some things that make him question its legitimacy,
06:01like how the alleged abductors still haven't given definitive proof they actually took Nancy.
06:07He was also struck that the note asked specifically for payment in USD.
06:10Does it seem like these were originating from overseas?
06:14That's kind of the first impression.
06:16We don't talk like that domestically.
06:17We would just say $6 million, $7 million, $10 million, whatever the number.
06:22We wouldn't say USD.
06:24Over the weekend, investigators continued their extensive search of Nancy Guthrie's home,
06:29towing away a car believed to be hers and searching the vegetation around her home along with a septic tank.
06:35Initially, you're looking, trying to find somebody alive, but now you have to go back and say, well, maybe she was hidden, you know, harmed and hidden.
06:43A painstaking search now nine days since Nancy disappeared.
06:47All right, Liz, you're outside Nancy Guthrie's home right now there in Tucson.
06:52We just heard from the sheriff's office about the search continuing.
06:57Yeah, that's right, Tom.
06:58The sheriff's department says they plan to continue searching Nancy's home and property,
07:02as well as her daughter Annie's home, tonight and to tomorrow.
07:06Tom.
07:07Liz Kreutz leading us off tonight here on Nightly News.
07:10Liz, thank you.
07:10We'll take a turn back here to Milan.
07:12We've just heard from Lindsay Vaughn for the first time since her brutal crash on the downhill.
07:18Vaughn posting on Instagram, it wasn't a storybook ending or a fairy tale.
07:22It was just life.
07:25Oh, my goodness.
07:27I have no regrets.
07:30Those are the words from Lindsay Vaughn tonight, a day after this horrific crash knocked her out of the Olympics.
07:36Vaughn posting on Instagram, she suffered a complex tibia fracture
07:41that will require multiple surgeries to fix.
07:44She crashed just seconds into her downhill run.
07:47Oh, my goodness.
07:48The crowd stunned to silence as she was airlifted from the course.
07:54I was simply five inches too tight on my line when my right arm hooked inside the gate, twisting me, Vaughn wrote.
08:02My ACL and past injuries had nothing to do with my crash whatsoever, adding,
08:07If you take anything away from my journey, it's that you all have the courage to dare greatly.
08:13And that's what these athletes did today, with medals up for grabs in five sports, including freestyle skiing.
08:21First run of three for Eileen Gu.
08:23Eileen Gu took home silver in slope style.
08:26Eileen Gu, the stomp on the right side, 1260, a beautiful masterpiece.
08:33Gu is a San Francisco native, but competes for China, where her mother is from.
08:38Sometimes it feels like I'm carrying the weight of two countries on my shoulders, and just being able to ski through all of that, you know,
08:43and still show my best and still be so deeply in love with the sport.
08:46That's really what I care about.
08:49On the ice, the U.S. women's hockey team continued their dominant run, beating Switzerland 5-0.
08:56A 5-0 victory for the United States.
08:59Despite a strong skate from married ice dancers Madison Chalk and Evan Bates,
09:03They're skating with precision, with ease.
09:07They sit in second place after tonight's short program.
09:11Just hours after Chalk and Bates helped Team USA win gold in the team event,
09:16their teammate, Alyssa Liu, says her medal broke.
09:20Skier Breezy Johnson had the same problem.
09:22Yeah, it came apart.
09:24And now Olympics organizers say they're investigating with maximum attention.
09:29Team USA's first gold medal of these games went to skier Breezy Johnson
09:34in the very same race where Lindsey Vonn crashed.
09:37Molly Hunter caught up with Johnson, fresh off her big win.
09:41Breezy Johnson of the United States of America.
09:44It was Breezy Johnson's day.
09:47It's a crazy day.
09:48It feels incredible.
09:50But minutes after winning, she told us, it belonged to someone else, too.
09:53Yeah, my dad taught me to ski, and he was in an accident a couple of weeks ago.
09:58He couldn't come here.
10:00He found out that he can no longer ski anymore.
10:03And so, yeah, the least I could do is try to ski fast for him.
10:07He skied so fast.
10:10Congratulations.
10:10But the biggest moment in the two-time Olympian's career, partially overshadowed by the brutal
10:16and dramatic end of teammate Lindsey Vonn's storied career.
10:20Yeah, I mean, I know what it is for an Olympic dream to die on this slope.
10:24And watching that, like, you know, really reminded me of how it felt four years ago.
10:30And my heart aches for her.
10:31Back in 2022, Breezy's Beijing Olympic dreams dashed when she crashed on this very course,
10:37rupturing her ACL.
10:38It's never really been the place that I put it all together, but I knew that I really could.
10:43On Sunday, close friend and teammate Michaela Schifrin seen cheering Breezy on as she chased gold.
10:49And tomorrow, the two will pair up to compete in the women's team combined,
10:52an event making its Olympic debut.
10:54We're not used to competing as a team, and so I feel a lot of pressure to help her out
10:59and do the best I can as a teammate.
11:01Michaela Schifrin is the most decorated alpine skier of all time,
11:05but she's struggled in the last Olympics, and tomorrow is her first of three planned events
11:09chasing gold.
11:10Tom?
11:12All right, Molly, thank you.
11:13We'll have more from Milan later in the broadcast.
11:16We want to turn now, though, to Washington, where Jeffrey Epstein co-conspirator Ghislaine Maxwell
11:21appeared before lawmakers but declined to answer questions.
11:24Hallie Jackson joins us now live.
11:26And, Hallie, it comes as lawmakers were also given their first look at the unredacted Epstein files.
11:32What did they learn?
11:33That's right, Tom.
11:33We're getting some new reaction from lawmakers, with some saying they're frustrated by what they say
11:37are too many redactions or the unmasking of victims' identities.
11:41It comes as Epstein's convicted co-conspirator Ghislaine Maxwell appeared virtually from prison
11:46for a private deposition to Congress, repeatedly declining to answer questions, pleading the fifth.
11:52Her lawyer now saying Maxwell invoked her constitutional right to silence,
11:56adding that she is prepared to speak fully and honestly if granted clemency by President Trump.
12:01Some Epstein abuse survivors now tell us they plan to attend a potentially explosive hearing
12:06featuring Attorney General Pam Bondi later this week.
12:09Tom?
12:11Hallie, thank you.
12:12We have some dramatic images we want to show you from Georgia tonight, a plane making an emergency landing
12:17onto a busy street after one of the pilots radioed what he thought would be his last
12:22message to his family.
12:23Here's Tom Costello.
12:27Stunning video from Gainesville, Georgia, captured the moment a single-engine Beechcraft
12:32Bonanza crashed into a busy intersection.
12:35On board, two pilots, including a student.
12:38Mayday, mayday, mayday.
12:39Just seconds earlier, one of them radioed a goodbye.
12:42We're not going to make it.
12:44Please tell my wife, Molly, I love her and my parents.
12:47I love her so much.
12:49The plane careened down the road, slamming into three vehicles, a fuel tank embedded in
12:54the back of an SUV, the driver covered in fuel.
12:58The plane had taken off from a nearby airport and was trying to turn back when it developed
13:02engine trouble.
13:04Amazingly, only two people suffered minor injuries.
13:07Both pilots walked away.
13:08The fact that they were able to land in the middle of hundreds of vehicles and only hit
13:12three of them, no power lines, is very remarkable.
13:17The Bonanza is considered one of the best general aviation planes in the air.
13:21Tonight, the FAA is investigating.
13:23Tom?
13:24All right, Tom Costello for us.
13:26When we return live from Milan in 60 seconds, the Quad God takes flight.
13:31How Ilya Malinan helped lead Team USA to gold, we talk to the team next.
13:36We're back now with Team USA's figure skaters who won gold in the team event in a nail-biter
13:44with Team Japan.
13:46Stephanie Goss caught up with them today in Milan.
13:49The U.S. came into the figure skating team competition heavy favorites, but Japan was
13:54not going down without a fight.
13:56The two teams neck and neck throughout the three-day event, but ice dance couple Madison
14:02Chalk and Evan Bates dominated, and Pairs skaters Danny O'Shea and Ellie Cam...
14:07Forget about meeting expectations.
14:10They just exceeded them.
14:12...pulled out one of their all-time best performances.
14:15It really looked like you took the nerves and you said, not today.
14:19We kind of did.
14:21We're like, we're just going to go out there and experience as much joy from this circumstance
14:25as possible.
14:26You know who has unmistakable joy on the ice?
14:30Oh, yeah.
14:30Oh, yeah.
14:31For sure.
14:33World champion Alyssa Liu skated the short program.
14:37You're back on Olympic ice again.
14:38Yeah.
14:39How does it feel?
14:40It felt really good.
14:41I just knew first round was going to have fun, have a blast cheering on everybody else.
14:46Then there was Ilya Malinan, his sheer number of quads impossible to beat.
14:52No one else can do what he does.
14:54Scoring more than 200 points in the free skate, giving the gold to Team USA.
14:59It was an incredible feeling.
15:00The crowd was amazing.
15:02Now it is time to look to the individual medals.
15:05Has the tone been set with this gold medal, Alyssa?
15:09Well, I'm really excited for the individual events.
15:11Team USA first shining as a team, ready now to shine on their own.
15:16Stephanie Gosk, NBC News, Milan.
15:19And we're back in a moment with the NFL star arrested in broad daylight after a police chase.
15:25We'll show you the video and the explosive armored car heist that didn't go off as planned.
15:30That's next.
15:33Welcome back.
15:34A star rookie for the Atlanta Falcons is now under arrest, accused of violent domestic dispute.
15:39Linebacker James Pierce Jr. was taken into custody in a major scrum.
15:44You see it right here after a police chase in Miami on Saturday.
15:48He's accused of taking off in his Lamborghini and clipping a police officer after allegedly hitting former girlfriend and WNBA star Rekia Jackson with his car.
15:58Pierce posted bail and his attorney says Pierce maintains his innocence.
16:02Also, from here in Italy, this scene almost straight out of an action movie, heavily armed and masked men blocked a highway and set off an explosion trying to get into an armored bank truck.
16:13But this Italian job didn't quite pan out like the movies.
16:17Italian police later apprehending two of those attackers.
16:20And the new warning from Cuba that due to a fuel shortage there, they can no longer refuel international flights into the island nation.
16:28Some airlines are now suspending flights to Cuba.
16:31The growing energy crisis due in part to a U.S. blockade, cutting off oil from Mexico and Venezuela.
16:38And when we come back from here in Milan, my emotional conversation with the American figure skater whose parents were killed in that deadly midair plane crash over the Potomac.
16:47Finally, tonight from here in Milan, my conversation with American figure skater Max Naumov, hoping to triumph at the Olympics a year after tragedy.
17:05Always keep fighting.
17:07It's one of the lessons Max Naumov's father instilled in him back when he was a little boy with big goals.
17:14I always dreamed of being in the Olympics.
17:18Floats in the air.
17:19Beautiful.
17:21Words he's had to lean on now more than ever.
17:25Only he knows what it took the journey to this point, to this stage.
17:31Last month, as Max waited anxiously to learn if his scores would be enough to make his first Olympic team, he kissed a grainy photograph.
17:39That's Max, age three, on the ice, for the very first time, flanked by his parents, Vadim Naumov and Yevgenia Shishkova.
17:4985.72.
17:51I wanted, you know, them to be with me, to literally share that moment with me, because they deserve it.
18:01They deserve to be there, right next to me, you know.
18:04The Russian Olympians, not just Max's parents, but his coaches as well.
18:08That moment is so special, because that was the beginning to everything.
18:11That was the beginning to where I am now.
18:14That beginning met a tragic end last year after a mid-air collision between an American Airlines jet and an Army Black Hawk killed 67 people.
18:24Among them, the two people who were Max's entire universe.
18:28He says in that moment, he simply froze.
18:32You weren't sure if you were coming back.
18:33No, sir.
18:34I had those moments where I just froze.
18:36I didn't know what to do.
18:37So I said, hey, this is such a crucial and pivotal moment in my life.
18:42If at this moment I don't take on the responsibility, then I'll look back forever on this moment and know that I did not step up.
18:51And so he returned to the ice, training through grief and exhaustion, pushed by his choreographer to rediscover the joy of skating.
19:00He just pushed me out there, and he's like, hey, just go.
19:02Like, let's do our step sequence.
19:04And then he puts on the music, and I just go.
19:05It was almost like an overflow of emotion at that point, because I was just literally skating like normal.
19:10But it felt right.
19:11It just felt right.
19:12It felt absolutely right.
19:13It felt like what I needed to do.
19:16Max wholly rededicated himself to his lifelong Olympic dream, feeling his parents' presence in every skate.
19:23If I'm skating my program at competition, if there's a stumble or there's a wobble, I feel them literally carrying me up in that moment.
19:30They're with you.
19:31They're with you on the ice.
19:32Yeah, and I feel that physically, emotionally, mentally, all of the above.
19:36Max's resilience and perseverance also building to this.
19:41One of the last conversations Max had with his parents was about the Olympics.
19:47The moment he finally became an Olympian.
19:51It was his godmother who helped him slip on that iconic Team USA jacket for the first time.
19:58Tell me about that feeling.
19:59Yeah, man, I mean, I put on that jacket, I remember, and I didn't want to take it off.
20:04I literally just hugged myself with it, you know?
20:07Max has his parents' photo here with him in Milan, and he's planning to honor their legacy once again, this time on the world's biggest stage.
20:16When you did make the Olympics, did you have a conversation with your parents?
20:21Of course.
20:22The words just kept spilling out is that we did it, and we did it.
20:24Everything we did together was as a team.
20:26Those 19 years all brought together to this moment, you know?
20:31I still feel like we did it together.
20:36And we can't wait for Max to hit the ice.
20:39And primetime coverage kicks off tonight at 8 o'clock on NBC and Peacock.
20:44That's nightly news for this Monday.
20:45I'm Tom Yamas reporting from Milan.
20:48Thanks so much for watching.
20:49Tonight and always, we're here for you.
20:52Good night.
20:56We thank you for watching, and remember, stay updated on breaking news and top stories on the NBC News app, or watch live on our YouTube channel.
