00:02Wemos Chief Safety Officer Mauricio Pena told a Senate committee on Wednesday that some remote
00:07operators who assist the company's self-driving vehicles are based in the Philippines,
00:11according to electricvehicles.com. Pena said the Alphabet subsidiary uses overseas human
00:17operators to provide guidance when robot access encounter challenging situations,
00:21while the vehicles remain in control of all driving tasks. He said the operators do not
00:27remotely drive the vehicles. Pena said he did not have a breakdown of how many operators are located
00:32outside the United States, prompting criticism from senators. Lawmakers raised concerns about
00:37cybersecurity risks, information delays, operator qualifications, and labor impacts. The hearing
00:44also included Tesla executives defending autonomous safety as Congress considers federal self-driving
