Malaysia will ensure that a proper ecosystem and regulatory framework are in place before adopting autonomous vehicles and related technologies, says Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo.
He said the government is working with the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and other stakeholders to draft rules that will govern not only driverless cars but also emerging technologies such as drones and robotics.
00:00YB, on self-driving vehicles, you said that your ministry is currently in discussion with JPJ, is there any update on that?
00:07No, not yet. We are in discussions with JPJ. Once we are ready, we will have a press conference to explain what we're going to do next.
00:16The self-driving vehicle, where does the bus stop? Is it just public transportation or is it going to replace a lot of logistics
00:23since we know there are a lot of that involved when it comes to road kills, it involves a lot of logistics companies and big lorry drivers.
00:36Is it going to replace, is there a possibility that they are going to be replaced, these drivers?
00:41Let me put it this way. Moving ahead, we are going to see more autonomous vehicle activity.
00:49This will expand beyond just cars, it will move to areas such as robotics.
00:57So you are going to look at robots walking around you, you are going to look at drones and what have you not.
01:03So the idea is to start thinking about governance that is going to ensure that when you have autonomous vehicle activity,
01:12then there is in existence structures that ensure that it's safe.
01:18So this is the conversation that is going on and that is what we are focused on now.
01:22In this conversation, of course, we are also looking at vehicles on roads.
01:28If we come to a point where you find that vehicles are replaced by autonomous vehicles, which means they have no drivers,
01:35then we want to make sure that we have thought over the process, that we have created the regulatory framework
01:41that ensures that ecosystems are put into place before we actually adopt the technology so that if such vehicles are on the road or used in any other manner,
01:53then they are safe for use. So that's where we are now.
01:57The discussion is ongoing. It will involve many different stakeholders depending on the nature of the vehicle.
02:07As I said, it goes beyond just vehicles as we understand it in terms of cars and motorcycles.
02:13There are other items that we will see or objects that we will see that will be able to operate autonomously as we move ahead.
