01:10It is an absolute joy to be here today launching the book of my brother.
01:17And I'm sure you're confused because I'm from Africa and he's from India and he's my brother.
01:24But there is a connection that I have with Kalashji that cannot be explained.
01:33I'm a bit older than he is in terms of the Nobel Peace Prize because I won in 2011 and he won in 2014.
01:43So on that note, I'm his senior.
01:48But today's book, Lunch, is something that the world needs.
01:55Compassion cannot be understated or overstated in the world that we live in.
02:02I love to tell stories.
02:03So a few years ago, there was an article about a farmer who lost his dog.
02:11And this farmer spent an entire night looking for his dog.
02:17The entire community, knowing how close the farmer was to his dog,
02:23woke up the next morning and tried to help him find his dog.
02:27They went around the community trying to find the dog.
02:32And when they got under a bridge, they saw the dog laying there.
02:37And as they called the dog, he will not move.
02:41So they all walked to where the dog was laying to see what was the problem.
02:48And when they got there, this dog was wrapped around a newborn baby that had been abandoned at birth.
02:59And I'm that one crazy person who reads a story and then rushed to the comments to go and read.
03:07So one of the comments that stuck with me, someone wrote,
03:12How is it that we live in a world where a dog has more compassion than humans?
03:23This is a very sad state.
03:26But unfortunately, it is the state of the world that we live in.
03:31From Africa to Asia, North America to Europe, every part of the world, child slavery is a problem.
03:40The indignity and suffering of women is a problem.
03:45Democracy no longer works for people.
03:48Rather, people are subject to slavery even in their own countries.
03:54My brother has taken off his time to write this book, The Power of Compassion.
04:01If we really want to see a change in the world that we live in,
04:05each and every one of us in this room need to harness our power of compassion.
04:12When I got to the airport in Delhi, the immigration guy tried to give me a little bit of trouble.
04:18But eventually, when he found out that I was Kalash's senior as a Nobel laureate, he relaxed.
04:26And then he asked me one question.
04:29What do I do to change the world?
04:32And my response to him was,
04:35If you help one person to be the best version of themselves,
04:41you too have won the Nobel Peace Prize.
04:46Congratulations, Kalash G.
04:48You have continued to lead the way for many of us.
04:53That compassion is the way to life.
04:56At the bar ashram where we see the children,
05:00in your interaction with your fellow Nobel laureates,
05:03in your interaction with government officials and everyday people,

06:54For too long,
06:56we have allowed power to define truth,
06:59profit to define value
07:01and fear to define belonging.
07:03Every crisis today
07:06cries out for an urgent new approach.
07:12Silence anymore
07:14is betrayal.
07:17History has proven
07:18that humans can move from darkness to light.
07:23We have the solutions within us.
07:25The most powerful force
07:28to move from despair to hope,
07:31falsehood to truth
07:32and destruction to creation
07:34is compassion.
07:37Compassion is power.
07:39Compassion is responsibility.
07:42Compassion is courage.
07:44And compassion is action.
07:46The universal spark of compassion enables us
07:51to look into the eyes of suffering
07:54and say,
07:56I will solve this.
07:59My book,
08:00Karuna, the power of compassion,
08:03illustrates how compassion
08:04is the most powerful and practical solution
08:07to personal, social and global problems.
08:12We are all born with vast notion of compassion.
08:17But over time,
08:18it becomes torment
08:19or remains limited to the people closest to us.

08:26compassion can be ignited and expanded.

08:32I have introduced a new concept,
08:34Compassion Quotient,
08:35a scientific method
08:38to measure
08:38and increase compassion.
08:41I am not a preacher
08:43or teacher of compassion.
08:45I have made it
08:47a way of life.

08:54and dignity
08:54of millions of most marginalized people
08:57across the globe.

09:34with a personal story.
09:35The first time I had met Kailash Ji,
09:37this was a few years ago,
09:39you know,
09:39and Mahatma Gandhi had said
09:41that you have to be the change
09:42you want to see.
09:44First time that I met him,
09:46and I have always been
09:47so impressed by him,
09:47I walked up to him
09:48and I said,
09:49Kailash Ji,
09:50my name is Amish,
09:50I am an author
09:51and I just wanted
09:53to pay my respects to you.
09:54And the way he behaved,
09:56when he speaks of
09:57Karuna and compassion,
09:58he actually is
09:59a living example of it.

10:07so let me begin,
10:09you know,
10:09with a question on
10:11actually how you behave
10:13despite the kind of work
10:15that you have done,
10:16the very nature of the work
10:17that you have done,
10:18you end up often seeing
10:20the worst of society.
10:22You see slavery,
10:24you see child abuse,
10:25you see,
10:26and you have,
10:26and you see in many cases
10:28the underbelly of society
10:30and you have fought
10:31to free children from there.
10:33Now,
10:34seeing all this negativity,
10:36how do you keep
10:37this compassion
10:38so deeply alive?
10:39Because one can see it,
10:41it's from root
10:42to outer surface
10:44with you.
10:45How do you maintain
10:46that balance
10:46despite seeing
10:47so much ugliness?
10:52And thank you,
10:53Lema,
10:53my dear sister.
10:59It's true that
11:00when I started
11:02my fight
11:03against child slavery
11:04almost
11:0650 years ago,
11:09it was a non-issue.
11:11That was a serious problem,
11:13but
11:14was not yet
11:16recognized
11:16as
11:17a crime
11:19against humanity
11:21or legally
11:21crime.
11:24So,
11:24the toughest
11:25start was
11:26to change that
11:27mentality
11:28and to challenge.
11:31But as Gandhiji
11:32said,
11:33you referred
11:33Gandhiji,
11:36that first
11:36they
11:37ignore you,
11:40then they
11:42they oppose you,
11:44they will fight
11:45with you
11:45and eventually
11:47you will win.
11:49So,
11:50I have not won
11:50the battle yet.
11:52All these things
11:53are commas in my life,
11:55not the full stop.
12:00It's true that
12:01the children
12:02who were
12:03sold and
12:04bought
12:05like animals
12:06or sometimes
12:07in lesser prices
12:08than animals,
12:10the children
12:11who were
12:12sexually abused,
12:15economically
12:15exploited,
12:17sometimes
12:18beaten up
12:19and even
12:19killed.
12:21I have come
12:22across many
12:22such incidents
12:23in India
12:24and other
12:24parts of the
12:25world.
12:27But I will
12:28share you
12:29the first
12:29story
12:30that
12:31gave me
12:32inner strength.
12:34It was
12:35in 1980
12:36I was
12:38publishing
12:39a magazine
12:39a journal
12:41called
12:42Sanghas
12:42Jari
12:43Rahega
12:43in Hindi.
12:44Struggle
12:44shall continue,
12:45will continue.
12:48And the
12:49content in that
12:50journal was
12:51exclusively
12:52on the most
12:55marginalized
12:55and most
12:56excluded
12:56and exploited
12:57children and
12:58women
12:59and communities.
13:00So a
13:02desperate
13:02father
13:03knocked on
13:04my door
13:05one day.
13:09His
13:09daughter
13:10was born
13:11and grew
13:11up in
13:12slavery
13:12at a
13:13brick
13:13kiln
13:13in
13:14Punjab.
13:17The
13:17couple
13:17was
13:18leered
13:19away
13:20from
13:22Uttar
13:22Pradesh
13:23from a
13:23village
13:24and
13:26then
13:26parents
13:27saw
13:28that
13:28some
13:29brothel
13:29agents
13:30started
13:31coming
13:31and
13:31negotiating
13:32the
13:32price
13:33of
13:33the
13:33girl
13:33and
13:35the
13:36girl

13:37old
13:38Sabo

13:39have
13:39been
13:39sold

13:40time.

24:26Kailash ji, in the book, you speak of the Satyarthi compassion coefficient. I have heard of IQ, EQ, all of us know that. There are corporate structures which encourage us to increase IQ. Our education system encourages IQ. Can you explain on the compassion quotient, what does that mean?
24:50So, the problem with these two, you are right, you have already answered your question, that they are very individualistic. Or they, in fact, inspire or motivate you to be someone who can gain more profit and can be a successful leader in your company or whatever.
25:19So, that is very individualistic kind of a selfish approach, I would say, in cruel words. But they also discriminate. Even in a family, if a brother, if you, somebody is measuring the compassion, the IQ, and parents say that the sister's IQ is bigger than, higher than the IQ of the brother, then there would be some discrimination.
25:41discrimination, there would be some envy. And they would start disliking each other because it creates that kind of IQ hierarchy. So, that's okay.
25:53But, CQ, the new idea which I have launched in this book, and we have been working for quite some time, me and my colleagues, that since compassion is innate, I say that if we believe in God or nature, God has given two unprecedented gifts.
26:21One is Chetana, consciousness, another one is Karuna, compassion. So, so we lead our life and our society with Chetana, where the intellect is highly dominated, the mind is highly dominated, because Chetana has four elements.
26:41So, so, so the ego is dominating, the mind is dominating, etc. But in case of Karuna, we keep losing the track of Karuna, compassion, which is there. So, we are all born with ocean of compassion.
26:59So, I realize that it is up to us, because our education, our upbringing, our socio-cultural environment teaches to run faster and to reach faster and be the first among all.
27:19Among all. That means you push others back so that you can reach faster. So, that aggressive competition.
27:26In case of compassion, it is not the case. Compassion is innate but unlimited. So, we normally keep the small amount of compassion in our fist.
27:38And create a small circle of compassion between say children and sometimes our parents or husband, wife, siblings or some close friends sometimes.
27:54That is the circle of compassion where you feel their problem as your own problem and try to solve them without any ego or without any expectation. So, that is there.
28:03Now, we wanted to enlarge the circle of compassion and that is possible. So, since compassion is not properly utilized, it remains dormant most of the time.
28:13So, if we are able to ignite it, if we are able to enhance the level of compassion, then we can, we can make, we can give a game changer solution, revolutionary solution to the society.
28:26So, CQ is a scientific method to evaluate or to measure compassion. The label of compassion means awareness, connectedness, feeling and action.
28:42We can all measure. We can all measure. They are all measurable. And their sub-components are also measurable which we have worked scientifically.
28:49So, these could be measured and then there is definitely possibility and there are methods to enhance that label and enlarge the circle of compassion.
29:00So, everybody has compassion. Now, we have to ignite it. Now, we have to awaken it. And now, it is possible to measure it and it would be possible in the future, coming future, how to enhance your level of compassion.
29:16So, how many young people are not yet married here? May I ask a question? Not yet married? Good. Quite a, quite a number.

30:37That means the person who understands each other's problem, other's problem as your problem and emerge as the problem solver that is the compassion quotient of that person.
30:48And also, in the jobs, people get jobs through not IQ and EQ in the future.
30:57The day will come very soon when the jobs would be given on the basis of the compassion quotient and the companies and the institutions and the organizations will run the training program to enhance the compassion quotient of their people.
31:14But that is very much needed in all walks of life, particularly in faith institutions.
