00:00all right so of course we got a special guest coming and she is my personal favorite she is
00:19my best friend in my mind give it up for Kiki Palmer
00:23hey what's up miss girl what's up miss girl yes okay I'll come around so we can show off our
00:34outfit yes hello you look fab thank you hi how's everybody doing hey um first of all I'm very
00:45excited to be with you today me too I live for you I love you so much and you looked amazing at BET
00:52oh my gosh you too nah you on point so all right um I gotta be in my interviewer uh hat so I'm gonna
01:01be okay multiple bags multiple bags I got a couple questions for you talking about Lightyear
01:06yeah um just tell us about the whole movie your character Izzy Hawthorne yes having a black girl
01:13in animation yes always on point so please tell us tell us all about it so I mean I was so excited
01:18obviously we know Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story and I'm a huge Toy Story fan growing up that was
01:24like one of my go-tos and so when I heard about them doing Lightyear and it was like it was pretty
01:28much the origin story it's the movie that Andy watched that made him fall in love with Buzz and
01:33I was excited at the opportunity to be in it but then also acknowledge the fact that Izzy Hawthorne my
01:38character and her grandmother Alicia Hawthorne were a part of that story and to give all the diversity
01:44in the film it pretty much is it's so powerful to me because it's saying these are all the people that
01:48were always a part of the story yes and now let's show and showcase them in the way they deserve
01:52absolutely uh so now like I I love animation I love all the whole gist of it like just seeing the
01:59journey overall how long did it take girl it took about two years so animation always takes at least
02:06a couple of years you know what I mean they take their time to get the voices down sometimes they
02:10change the story up before they actually put the animation in and so I remember shooting it for
02:14about two years geez yes well what was that experience like for you because look I know
02:21it's like a whole journey just seeing the characters come to life from like sketches yes yes and then
02:26from like the I don't even I don't even know how to say it it's like lucid dream type of animation
02:31where it's like a little little low quality girl they'd be like digitized yay they'd be floating not
02:36walking they'd be like girl they'd be zooming instead of like running it's weird yes but you know I love
02:43the fact that I got to see pixar at work yeah pixar is just incredible I mean they're like they're not
02:49like any other animation studio so to watch how they were able to actually create light year was I
02:54felt like a real treat you know especially for me somebody that wants to get behind the scenes and do
02:58more production work so to be able to see their process of how they honed in on the characters and
03:03the process of animation was great um and like you said just to see the characters go from being super
03:07you know on the paper to being digitized to actually being the full animation was cool and
03:12I really was gagging at the fact that they got into my character's hair honey they had her coils on
03:17point I said y'all need to etch up in there give my girls some different hairstyles let's give some
03:21flexibility okay oh absolutely what what is your favorite detail about your character because you
03:27mentioned hair is I mean I think in terms of animation it's definitely the hair right because when
03:32we talk about representation we don't want to just feel like you just block some black skin on there
03:36like really put details in the way that our people look represent us and I think the great thing about
03:42Izzy and her grandmother is that while they look like relatives they have unique different looks and I
03:47think that means that they took their time um I also love how Alicia Hawthorne my character's grandmother
03:53had a bunch of different hairstyles mama went from having cornrows to having a full fro to doing side
03:59twist with the fro and I said y'all did your ring skirt absolutely which is played by Uzo
04:04yes Uzo who I love Uzo you guys know from Orange is the New Black she played crazy eyes
04:09fabulous person and actress yeah amazing well okay so tell us about some of the themes
04:15were that were explored in the film that kind of related to your personal life
04:19man I mean the film has so many different themes right I think when I first watched it the biggest thing that came out to me
04:29the film has a lot of different messages but the one that pointed out to me most was
04:45don't miss out on the simple things in life chasing so much you know I think I've been working in this
04:52industry since I was so young and I'm very ambitious naturally like I love what I do
04:56I love having ideas and you know getting everything like finishing from beginning to end
05:01but I've also spent like a lot of my time on sets and working you know what I mean like a large portion of my life
05:07you know no proms no real school experiences a lot of things that may seem like nothing but are important in the
05:14bigger scope of things and so when I watched the movie I thought that was a really big and important message
05:19especially to all of us that are in this hustle culture you know we're chasing so much
05:23just like remember to take time to smell the coffee because before you know it your whole life could pass you
05:28by absolutely yeah that's that yeah yeah that's low-key what I'm going through right now as well
05:37like kind of missing those big moments especially just being a teenager you kind of just have to
05:43and you started younger than me yeah so yeah I can only imagine yeah for sure so yeah I get it for
05:49sure but it's just having those different experiences that make it worthwhile as well but
05:53one thing I love about you which is I always had even if you go through your ups and downs is your mom
05:58and dad are there with you and it was the same thing for me and I think that really makes the difference
06:03is having your support system so even when we get ahead of ourselves and we get tired and we don't
06:08know they've got her back so yeah for sure shout out to my mom shout out to my dad my creators
06:13what's up creators yes they did that girl yes they did that I appreciate y'all uh okay one last
06:21question because they're telling me to wrap it up oh no um what do you hope people take away from
06:26light year man like I said I hope they take away the message that I took away from it because I think
06:31it goes for all of us no matter where we started in our careers in America as a whole work culture is
06:37it's slavery essentially so we we can get just hung up to it without even realizing it so
06:42remembering to take a break and to love those around you and know that you are enough regardless
06:47of who sees it or not like there's a moment where Buzz's character says in the movie to Izzy about her
06:54grandmother he says you know I wanted your grandmother to be somebody you know I wanted her to
06:58have the opportunity to do this and that and my character Izzy said oh trust me she was somebody
07:04because she was somebody to her granddaughter she was somebody to her wife she was somebody
07:09to her family and I think we got to remember that just be somebody to the people that matter to you
07:15that's really what it's about right
07:34you
08:04You
