00:18We got the dollars because we are the what? The standard.
00:21It's only right that we bring out people from our audience today to show off the different elements.

00:32But first, let's bring out our moderators, Kaylin Charbonnet, Kia Bridges, and Mabel Frias.
00:39Make some noise for them, y'all.

01:24Thank you so much.
01:25What a warm welcome.
01:26Hi, Essence Fest!
01:28Yes!
01:29Welcome, welcome.
01:30So much we're celebrating this year.
01:32So happy to be here.
01:34We're here for the Best Beat Competition.
01:35So look, y'all ready?
01:38Woo!
01:39Let's get it.
01:40So first and foremost, I want to take a moment to introduce some of the most established creators and influencers right alongside me.
01:49So first and foremost, I have Ms. Mabelle.
01:52Nice to meet you.
01:52Thank you so much for being here.
01:54Thank you for having me.
01:55She has a multi-channel retail strategies with a winning track record of executing merchandising strategies prior to co-founding her brand, Luna Magic.
02:04She spent most of her career building and launching e-commerce strategies at fashion, beauty, and lifestyle brands like Macy's, Nordstrom, Savage X Fenty.
02:13Y'all know all these good brands, right?
02:15All of these things we love to use in lingerie by Rihanna.
02:18With her scholarly accomplishments and extended experience, she's sure to bring a perspective of an expertise.
02:24And then alongside, we have New Orleans' own Kaya.
02:26Thank you so much for being here, Kaya.
02:28She's a professional makeup artist and beauty lifestyle content creator with years of experience in the industry.
02:35Kaya brings forth an appreciation for diverse styles, beauty techniques, as well as she specializes in enhancing clients' natural beauty through her signature natural style makeup.
02:45Through her expertise and passion, Kaya continues to make a mark on the makeup world, leaving a lasting impression on clients and peer industry professionals alike.
02:56Y'all give it up for them.
02:57Hey, y'all.
02:58Woo!
03:00And then give it up for yourselves because this is all about the audience, right?
03:03Without the participation of the audience, this right here, this segment, would not be possible without you.
03:08So without further ado, let's go ahead and get started.
03:10I want to talk about some things.
03:12So first and foremost, we have some products, both from Luna Magic and Nick.
03:16So thank you so much for the donations for the products.
03:19So this is going to be an amazing time, right?
03:22Winners, there will be two winners.
03:24We have some goodies in store.
03:25There's one big package from Luna Magic.
03:28And there's also two, a possibility of winning some Essence tickets.
03:31So, you know, let's get it.
03:33It's time to get it up.
03:34All right.
03:35So first and foremost, y'all can go ahead and get started.
03:37Y'all have about 10, 15 minutes to give us the best beat.
03:40So you'll go ahead and you go for it.
03:42All right?
03:43All right.
03:44So now we're going to continue on.
03:46First and foremost, thank y'all again just so much for being here.
03:50We really appreciate your presence.
03:51Your presence is a present.
03:52It's a gift.
03:53All right?
03:53And I want to first turn the first question to the both of you.
03:57So the first question is, when judging for this competition,
04:00what is it that y'all are looking for?
04:02For me, I'm looking for creativity.
04:05I think that makeup and beauty is such an exciting category.
04:08And I hope that you get to create looks that inspire your inner most creative genius diva.
04:16Ooh.
04:16So definitely in judging today, I'm looking for you to do what makes you feel the most beautiful.
04:22Your makeup doesn't have to look like my makeup.
04:24It doesn't have to look like Kayla's makeup, Mabel's makeup.
04:26But whatever makes you feel the most beautiful, that's what I want to see.
04:29Absolutely.
04:30We love that.
04:31And the one person to affirm your own beauty is you.
04:34So another question, Kaya, specifically to you.
04:38One of your specialties is enhancement through your signature natural style, right?
04:42Which is one of my personal favorite go-tos.
04:44I think it's the thing that I can do the most.
04:46So it's one of my faves.
04:47What are some staple suggestions for achieving that look?
04:51So I think definitely with soft glam or natural glam makeup,
04:56the best thing you can do is start off with less.
04:59I always take a less is more approach.
05:00So you can always add.
05:02But taking away sometimes is when it gets a little finicky and you may have to start all over.
05:05So I definitely like to start a little smaller, add until you're satisfied,
05:10and then you can get that natural glam look that you're looking for.
05:12Less is always more, right?
05:14So now I'm going to switch it over to you, Mabel.
05:16And I want to ask, with working with so many of these major brands like Savage Fenty
05:20and being the co-founder of your own beauty brand, Luna Magic,
05:23which is a fast-growing, indie, vibrant brand that celebrates mutual love for multicultural heritage, right?
05:31Culture, music, all of the things together.
05:33What are some of the things that you look for with developing your own products?
05:37Well, I love the creativity.
05:38I love that we get to formulate our products for women of color.
05:42It's inspired by my mother, who was a beautiful chocolate woman.
05:46And for me, it's an honor to create shades, colors, pigments, ingredient stories
05:51that really cater to all shades of brown.
05:54Wow, that's amazing.
05:55You know, when I think about makeup, I think about my mom being my first inspiration.
05:59You know, watching your mom do her makeup in the mirror, like, you know,
06:02it's like that's your first educator, right?
06:04But also, too, to the both of you, what are some current makeup trends that have your attention?
06:11For me, our lashes, I feel like lashes have the power or accentuating the eye,
06:17and I don't think you can have enough.
06:19The way that I think about when my lash is a wardrobe,
06:21in the same way that I have many different styles of shoes,
06:24and I love them for different reasons, and I create different looks,
06:28I have a lash wardrobe.
06:29So if I want to be dramatic that day, I go super glam,
06:34and if I want to be subtle and cute and, like, you know, something soft.
06:38So, yeah, so come check out our booth, Luna Magic, over there,
06:41so you can see the lash assortments that we have available today at Essence.
06:44Woo!
06:45Giving up, her brand is right across the way.
06:47Y'all better go make sure you show some love, get some products.
06:50All right, Kaya, same for you.
06:52Okay.
06:52So I think when it comes to makeup trends,
06:55lately blush has been, like, the biggest thing.
06:58Like, we've all always loved blush, but blush is, like, making a resurgence.
07:02I love liquid blush.
07:03That's been one of my faves lately.
07:04I like to, like, bring it a little bit under my eye,
07:06and I also really like the kind of, like, feathery brow look,
07:10that, like, brow gel, almost, like, laminated look.
07:13So, yeah.
07:14Love that.
07:14I think one of my favorites, personally, is the Eye Brightener, too.
07:18It's just something about how it just lifts your face.
07:20It gives you, like, a nice tint, a nice lift,
07:21and, you know, just enhances that natural look, right?
07:25Another question for the both of you.
07:26What are makeup products that you can't live without?
07:31Lip gloss.
07:32You know, even if you're having a no-foundation day,
07:36lip gloss is just my staple go-to.
07:38I love when my lips are nice and juicy.
07:41Okay.
07:42I think my number one go-to product is probably going to be mascara.
07:46I don't know why I'm not super into lash extensions on myself,
07:49but I love, you know, a little mascara before I leave the house.
07:52Absolutely.
07:53Absolutely.
07:54How we looking, ladies?
07:55How y'all feeling?
07:56Y'all doing all right?
07:57All right.
07:58So now I want to take this moment to kind of talk about blending skills
08:01because, for me personally, I feel like that's something that I always work hard to master.
08:07I want to know how did y'all learn y'all blending skills?
08:10How did y'all learn that?
08:11I've learned the best makeup blending skills from makeup artists.
08:14So we work with a lot of a community of makeup artists,
08:17and, you know, they're definitely always in beating somebody else's face.
08:21So I ask them.
08:23Anytime I sit in a chair, I'm like, what's new?
08:25What's hot?
08:26Help me understand.
08:26But I love to leave it to the experts.
08:29Like, I'm great at formulating products and coming up with marketing ideas,
08:31but I look to my community of women that do it day in and day out
08:35for that extra education and inspiration.
08:38And what about for you?
08:39So I'd definitely say really trial and error.
08:43Like, I know I can look back at old photos of myself,
08:45and, girl, it was looking all type of crazy.
08:47But definitely nowadays, you know, you see your growth over time.
08:51So definitely start off with just using different tools and techniques,
08:56like sponges, brushes, your fingers to blend things out,
08:59just until you get that sweet spot and you realize what works the best for you.
09:04Yes.
09:04So another thing that I want to throw in there, just because, just for fun,
09:09what was one of y'all first makeup products that you ever purchased?
09:12Do y'all remember that?
09:14Do y'all remember what your first thing was?
09:16It was, for me, a lip gloss from the local beauty supply store.
09:21I used to go to the beauty supply store with my mom.
09:23She would go in there and get perm, dark and lovely,
09:26things to dye her hair red.
09:27And by the counter, there was always, like, you know,
09:29this cute little, like, $1 to $2 lip glosses.
09:31And those were my first, like, the first thing that I gravitated to
09:35when I would go to the beauty supply store with my mom.
09:37So I definitely, when I first started doing makeup,
09:41I was just using my mom's.
09:42But my first, like, high-end product that I purchased for myself
09:45was definitely the Fenty Beauty Foundation that first dropped the soft matte,
09:50I think it was.
09:51That was, like, she broke the game with all the shades and stuff,
09:54and that was definitely my first super expensive,
09:56well, not expensive, but, you know, high-end product.
09:59Yes.
09:59Something about Fenty shades, too, are pretty cool.
10:02But I want you to take a little moment, too,
10:04to talk about Luna, Luna Magic,
10:06and tell us what are some of the, like,
10:08some of your favorite products on the line and why?
10:11Well, some of the favorite products,
10:13our community is actually creating with them.
10:15They have what we call our confidence kit,
10:17which includes an eyelash, a mini eyeshadow palette, and a lip gloss.
10:21But what we love the most about Luna Magic
10:23is we create products for the full face
10:25at prices that shouldn't break the bank.
10:27So we are available at Walmart, Target, and CVS
10:29because, you know, we don't compromise quality.
10:32It's, like, quality products that you'll find in Sephora and Ulta,
10:35but at an approachable price
10:36because, to me, we are high-low shoppers.
10:39I will be in the Gucci store in the morning,
10:41and I want to save a little money by the end of the day.
10:43So for me, it's about delivering value to the customer.
10:46I know that's right.
10:47And thank you for valuing your community.
10:48That is especially an important part,
10:50especially to have, you know, your own people to support your brand, right?
10:54Keeping it affordable and inclusive
10:56and, you know, accessible for everyone.
10:59So, Kaya, if you could develop a product,
11:03what would you develop?
11:06I know I said my favorite,
11:08or, like, my everyday makeup product is mascara,
11:10but if I could make my own product,
11:12it would definitely be a gloss.
11:13Like, some type of lip gloss.
11:15Like she said, you know, we should collab.
11:17Lip gloss is, like, it's always going to be that one thing that you need.
11:19Like, you can't do a full B without a little gloss, okay?
11:21So, yeah, I would definitely do a nice, like, pinky nude gloss.
11:25That's, like, always my go-to.
11:26I know that's right.
11:27And, you know, it's just that completion.
11:29It's that seal of the deal.
11:30And even if you don't have makeup on, right?
11:33Something about the lips.
11:33It just does a little something.
11:35Okay, cool.
11:36So I want to check in and see how we doing over here.
11:39How we doing, my ladies?
11:41Y'all looking good?
11:42Y'all ready?
11:43Okay, cool, cool, cool.
11:45So now we're going to shift into just some other things.
11:48I want to talk a little bit more about tools, okay?
11:51So developing the toolkit.
11:54So what is, what are some useful tools for developing artists?
11:58So for those that may have an interest in becoming a makeup artist,
12:01those who may want to develop a product,
12:03what are some useful tools for them?
12:05I think tools from a makeup perspective is having a brush set.
12:09I think if you really look at makeup and cosmetics,
12:11it's about blending and contouring
12:14and making sure that you're putting formulas in a way that looks like skin.
12:18So from a, you know, from that perspective,
12:21it's having a really solid brush tool
12:23so that you can apply the makeup in a way that's flawless.
12:25But also I think education.
12:27There's a lot of makeup schools and programs out there.
12:31So I think that with makeup, you know,
12:33there's always something new trending and exciting.
12:35So I advise the community to invest in educating yourself on the latest trends
12:39so that you can better serve your customer.
12:41Absolutely.
12:43I think when I think of tools, I definitely,
12:46my mind goes more to like education, like learning tools.
12:50So definitely, I know a lot of times when you're a makeup artist,
12:52you want to take classes and things like that.
12:54But sometimes I found the best way for me to learn
12:56was to use free resources like YouTube, TikTok now, Instagram Reels,
13:02like kind of picking up on those tools and techniques before you invest a lot.
13:05And that way, when you go to classes and things like that, you have questions.
13:08So, yeah, I said that was the best.
13:11Yes.
13:12So, Kaya, I'm flipping it back to you.
13:15What is your priority as a makeup artist?
13:19So as a makeup artist,
13:21I would definitely say my priority is always to give each client
13:25that individual experience.
13:27Like, I know sometimes we're booked and busy, especially on Fridays and Saturdays.
13:31And sometimes it almost feels like muscle memory.
13:33But I always want every client to feel like they get that one-on-one time.
13:37I'm doing their makeup in a way that flatters their face.
13:40I'm not going to do two pumps of this and one square to that
13:43and then throw it on their face.
13:44Like, I want everyone's beauty to be enhanced.
13:46So, yeah.
13:47You know, I really appreciate that.
13:49And, you know, one thing that learning about you
13:51is that you really prioritize the beauty, the natural beauty of your clients.
13:54So thank you for your work and what you do.
13:56So thank you, thank you.
13:57Mabel, I want to pass it back to you.
13:59What is something new about your brand that you're excited and developing,
14:03whether it's a new product, whether it's a new tool?
14:07What is something that you can kind of give us a little inside scoop?
14:09I know, you know, we're kind of getting a little up close and personal,
14:13but what can you give us?
14:14I'll give you a little hint.
14:15So we recently lashed.
14:16We extended our lash collection.
14:17So we're really excited for that.
14:19Again, you can check them out at our booth over there, Luna Magic.
14:22But we are looking into a cream blush.
14:25So we had a blush, a powdered blush that went viral.
14:28It got picked up at one of the biggest, like, makeup influencers,
14:31and it's been, like, selling out like crazy.
14:33So we want to come up with the cream version, right,
14:36just to kind of give our customer a little bit of range.
14:39So whether she chooses or they choose to have a powder blush or a cream blush,
14:44we want them to find the options at Luna Magic.
14:46Look, I think we need to go take a trip over there to Luna Magic
14:50because it sounds like there's some goodies coming out that we need to have, okay?
14:53Have right here in the palm of our hands.
14:55So another question is for those who want to be more skilled
15:00and immersed in the makeup and beauty world,
15:02what are some offerings that you can, you know, give to them?
15:06What are some advice, some, you know, mentors, some, you know, just some advice as to how to do that?
15:12For us, I think, like, what she was saying, YouTube is a school of the universe.
15:17I mean, there's so much great creativity and content creation that's coming out of YouTube.
15:21But follow us on Instagram at lunamagicbeauty, subscribe to our email at lunamagic.com
15:28because we have a lot of these programs in which we provide free educational opportunities.
15:33We are interested in investing in the next wave of beauty entrepreneurs,
15:36whether that be a makeup artist or you want to start your own beauty brand,
15:40through our Mentor Magic initiative.
15:42So I highly encourage you to follow our brand because we release monthly information on free resources and also money.
15:48In September, we are launching our first pitch competition in which we're giving away $10,000.
15:54We want to support the next generation of women of color to be beauty entrepreneurs
15:58because we know how hard it was to start our business.
16:01And whatever we can do to make that a little easier to the next beauty entrepreneur, we want to help them.
16:07Yes, absolutely.
16:08I mean, $10,000, I mean, that's quite a contest right there, okay?
16:12Yes, and same for you.
16:13Same question for you.
16:14What are some advice that you can offer anybody that wants to be more immersed?
16:18In the beauty world?
16:19So I would say, I know we live in a world where we're all surrounded by social media, which is amazing.
16:26There's a lot of free information on social media.
16:28You can find people.
16:29It's like a search engine, basically.
16:31But I would definitely say sometimes it kind of comes off as like a highlight reel.
16:34So you're seeing the best of everyone's work, the highlights of their life, only all of the ups.
16:39So definitely, you know, make sure you're, you know, staying a little grounded and make sure, you know, you know, everyone started somewhere.
16:46Even the person that's doing Beyonce's makeup, they had to pick up that brush for the first time one time.
16:51So definitely, you know, keep working towards all your dreams and, yeah.
16:55All right, so now I want to throw in a little something something.
17:01So I know that you've worked with a few big brands, but I know that you've worked with a few big brands.
17:09So what was the best part about being able to work with big brands on a big scale like that?
17:15For me, it's the experience.
17:17I mean, I was on the early team of Savage X Fenty and, you know, when Rihanna being the CEO then and the creative vision and the creativity and the intention that she had around really creating, like, sexy lingerie for women from all body types,
17:31I took that as an inspiration to figure out, okay, what's my version of that?
17:35And that's where Luna Magic was born.
17:37You know, Fenty Beauty kind of created this space for, we see ourselves as her little sister.
17:43There's Riri and then there's the little old Luna Magic, the Freya sisters, and we look to her and we're inspired by her,
17:49but there's room in this industry for all of us to thrive, for all of us to bring our own version of creativity.
17:56So I think the value of those big experiences was making mistakes on somebody else's dime and having the confidence to bet on ourselves and do it in a big way from the heart, you know, to the world.
18:07Oh, my goodness.
18:08Y'all give a hand clap for that, man.
18:09That was some great little insight advice right there.
18:14Also, too, I want to turn it to you.
18:16If you could work with any big brands of your choice, Kaya, who would it be?
18:20I'm right here.
18:22Oh, my gosh.
18:23Y'all, we was talking in the back, so we're going to get some things rolling, but I would definitely say one brand that I would love to work with would probably be NARS.
18:33NARS, yeah.
18:34I really, I just love the whole brand, so that would be really cool.
18:38And then also, I mean, there are brands like nowadays getting PR and stuff like that that I invested money in when I didn't really have money to buy makeup,
18:45but now getting those products and being able to, like, try things and all that good stuff, but also, like, getting sponsorships or, like, working with brands in that way would be really cool in the future.
18:54Amazing. Thank y'all so much for answering these rounds of questions.
18:57So now it's time to take it to the flow.
18:59Now it's time to judge a little bit.
19:03And ladies, how y'all feeling? Y'all ready?
19:06Okay, now it's time for the best beat.
19:08So now let's bring up all the contestants and let's go ahead and do what we got to do to judge this competition.
19:15All right?
19:16So I guess we're going to walk down.
19:19Yeah, let's go.
19:20Let's go ahead and do it.
19:23Let's see.
19:26Let's see.
19:27Let's see.
19:28Let's see.
19:29All right, all right, all right.
19:31So let's go ahead and walk around and see exactly what we got going on here.
19:36So all right.
19:38Going down the road right here.
19:39We're just going to take it all the way down.
19:41Okay.
19:42All right.
19:43So do we want to give a moment for anybody to explain kind of what they did?
19:47Give you a little one-two.
19:48Give me a little one-two.
19:50I just put a lot of eyeshadow on because I don't know how to do my makeup, but yeah.
19:53Okay.
19:54You did a little something.
19:55We commend you and we affirm you for that.
19:57All right.
19:58What about you?
19:58I did an ombre lip with the pink gloss and the brown gloss from the butter gloss from NYX.
20:06And then I added some of the eyeshadow as my highlighter.
20:09Oh, that's okay.
20:10Okay, I did a little, I changed my lashes out.
20:12All right.
20:13Thank you so much.
20:14All right.
20:15Now moving right along.
20:16What you got going on over here?
20:18So I also used the eyeshadow.
20:21I used a little bit of gold and did like a darker on the outside, like ombre kind of thing.
20:26And then I used the, because I wanted like a darker on the lip, so I used the eyeliner as my lip liner.
20:33And then I like blended it kind of with the darker, the brown eyeshadow.
20:38And then I used the pink gloss to make it an ombre.
20:42Y'all skilled.
20:42And I just want to show off right quick to the camera.
20:45Look at this packaging.
20:45Luna magic.
20:46I mean, this is amazing.
20:47This is amazing.
20:53Oh, I'm sorry.
20:54What about for you?
20:55What did you do?
20:56So I wanted like also the ombre lip.
20:59So I used the, um, the brow pencil and I did a, like a brown outline and then I used pretty
21:07much everything from the butter gloss to make it the glossy effect.
21:11I used, um, the eyeshadow and like this light color to do like a light type of ombre thing
21:17and also the darker color to like darken it out.
21:20Um, I used the eyelashes.
21:22I actually stacked the lashes to make it more like thicker, more fuller.
21:25Um, I used the brow glue to like kind of like make it that more natural look.
21:31And, um, of course I used the, yeah, that's, I think that's the one.
21:36Well, thank you.
21:39Y'all are looking good.
21:39Y'all are looking good.
21:40So tell me this.
21:41What's the favorite part of what you did to your face?
21:43What do you think is the highlight?
21:44The lashes.
21:45The lashes.
21:45Okay, good, good, good.
21:47And then moving right along.
21:48So tell me what was one of the things that you feel like you focused on today on your face?
21:52So I didn't have much.
21:54So I went with a red lip for a pop of color and I used the palette that they gave us to
22:00do like a gold bronze eyelid, you know, just kept it sweet and simple.
22:07All right, slave.
22:09All right.
22:09And what about you, Ms. Ma'am?
22:11What did you do?
22:11Let's see you over here.
22:12So I can really appreciate the warm tones with the shadows.
22:15I put that on my eyes, added in some pink because every girl loves pink on the lips and
22:20then just fit in the brows just a little bit for a more natural look.
22:23I know that's right.
22:25All right, y'all.
22:26Taking it down here.
22:27So tell me exactly what you did.
22:29Okay.
22:29So I just like a little simple look.
22:31I just went with a praline because I love me some NYX and I have a lot of sunscreen.
22:36So nothing would have stick.
22:37So I just went simple with a praline.
22:40And last but never least, my love, go ahead and get your shine on.
22:43So tell me exactly what you did.
22:44I just did a cute, simple, everyday look.
22:47Just a little gloss, a little eyebrow, and then my face was clear a little bit.
22:51I know that's right because skincare is important too underneath the makeup, right?
22:55So for my judges.
22:57I know that's right.
22:58Let's go ahead and get it together.
23:00So what y'all thinking?
23:01What y'all feeling?
23:02Okay.
23:03Let's take a little last look.
23:05Two winners, right?
23:06Yes.
23:06Two winners.
23:07We're going for two winners.
23:09I think two winners.
23:10First of all, I am so impressed by everyone's creativity and how you were able to do that
23:15in 20 minutes.
23:15I couldn't do it that quickly.
23:16Yes.
23:17Let's give them a round of applause for doing that.
23:1920 minutes is definitely a quick little one-two.
23:21Yes.
23:22Y'all were quick with it.
23:23Yes.
23:23All right.
23:24So how y'all feeling?
23:25Tell me what y'all feeling.
23:25Okay.
23:26So I will say, Miss Half Up, Half Down right here with the hoops, her look is giving.
23:32Okay.
23:32And then I also really love your look with this beautiful red dress on.
23:36Yes.
23:37Yes.
23:38All right.
23:39What about you?
23:41Oh, one.
23:45And I agree.
23:46Two.
23:47Yeah.
23:47Okay.
23:48Okay.
23:48I can get it.
23:49And then I'm the last one.
23:50I'm the last one.
23:50So if I had to choose, I would choose in between here and right here.
23:54So it looks like we got all votes right here.
23:56So it looks like we got a number one winner, right?
23:59Number two.
24:01Number two.
24:03Let's see.
24:04Let's think of what we feeling.
24:05What we feeling.
24:05How we doing this?
24:06I did like the double stacking last trick.
24:09Okay.
24:09She was the only one that did it.
24:11Very.
24:12You did too?
24:13Oh.
24:13Okay.
24:13Oh, no.
24:15Resourceful queens.
24:16I also like that you did the eyeliner as your lip liner.
24:20Yes.
24:20I know I didn't pick you as one of my winners, but that ate for me.
24:23So yeah.
24:23It ate here.
24:24Yeah.
24:24All right.
24:25Boom.
24:25Here we go.
