How Pepsi’s Bold Marketing Made It a Household Name!
Transcript
00:00But how did Pepsi become such a popular drink?
00:03You know, I think we can all agree that Coke is definitely more popular than Pepsi.
00:08But still, Pepsi managed to capture a decent share of the market.
00:13So how did they do it?
00:15Well, their marketing strategy was always very different from Coca-Cola.
00:20While Coke focused on advertising their classic product, Pepsi kept changing things up.
00:26They introduced new products often, and they didn't hesitate to be a bit wacky in their commercials.
00:32Take the 1990 commercial, featuring Michael Jackson, for example.
00:37Yeah, that's Michael Jackson dancing around in a Pepsi bottle.
00:41Or what about Cindy Crawford in a 1992 commercial, where she's hanging out with some friends on a beach,
00:49and suddenly her date shows up wearing a Pepsi t-shirt and hat.
00:53There were also commercials, where people took off their clothes to reveal a Pepsi t-shirt underneath.
01:00Plus, there was that time they released Pepsi Blue,
01:03which was a blue-coloured version of the drink that tasted similar to cherry.
01:08Not exactly a brilliant idea, since most people don't like mixing blue food colouring with carbonated beverages.
01:16That one turned out to be quite a flop.
01:18But nevertheless, Pepsi continued to push forward with their marketing efforts,
01:23and in 1998, they managed to sign Michael Jordan to endorse their product.
01:29This proved to be a great success, and helped boost sales.
01:33Also, Pepsi often sponsors big events like the Super Bowl halftime show,
01:39and even entire sports leagues, like the NFL and the NHL.
01:44They've also sponsored a lot of famous artists over the years.
01:47So we'll see you next time.
