Transcript
00:00The man who invented the tire changed the world, but the inventor of the tire never made a single
00:05tire in his life. This is the strange story behind one of the most valuable companies in the world.
00:11Welcome to the channel. If you're new here, this is the place for business and political insights
00:16that matter. The year is 1889. For the first time ever, cars are taking over the streets of Paris.
00:23At the time, cars are very expensive toys owned only by the rich, but soon the streets will be
00:28filled with all kinds of automobiles. And because of this, there is a pressing need for someone to
00:34fix a major problem. Cars keep getting flat tires, and so this is when two brothers named Edouard and
00:40André Michelin decide to open up a small workshop in Clermont-Ferrand, France. Their goal is to
00:47produce pneumatic tires that people can use on their bicycles, and it's not long before they invent a
00:52machine that can mass-produce rubber tires quickly and cheaply. This makes them an instant success,
00:58and within a few years, they even have more capacity than they know what to do with.
01:02So they begin to explore other ways they could use their technology. In 1902, they would get their
01:08big break. They were invited to showcase their products at the St. Louis World's Fair in Missouri.
