How Mark Zuckerberg's Early Life Sparked the Facebook Revolution
Transcript
00:00This is the story of Facebook, part two. The rise of Facebook. In 2004, Mark Zuckerberg was just
00:06another smart but nerdy computer science student at Harvard University. But soon he would change
00:11the world by connecting people online and making billions in the process. This is the untold story
00:17of Facebook. Our story today begins in the early 2000s. Back then, social media as we know it didn't
00:24really exist. But there were some websites that were starting to become very popular.
00:28Websites like Friendsta and MySpace, where people could connect with their friends and family members,
00:34share photos and videos, and stay up to date with what they were up to. But these sites were missing
00:39something. They lacked a certain polish and professionalism. And this is where our story
00:44begins. Mark Zuckerberg was born on May 14, 1984, in Dobbs Ferry, New York. He grew up in a wealthy
00:52Jewish family and attended a private school in his hometown. From an early age, Mark showed signs of
00:57being a prodigy. When he was just 12 years old, he taught himself how to program and created a program
01:03called Zoom. This program allowed him to communicate with his family members over AOL Instant Messenger.
01:09At first, his father didn't want Mark to use his computer for anything other than school. But seeing
01:14how much Mark had progressed already, he eventually gave him permission to use the computer for other
01:19things as well. And Mark took full advantage of this privilege. He used his computer to create games and
01:25other programs that he shared with his friends. One of these programs was a digital version of the
01:30card game war. And believe it or not, this program became so popular among his friends that they started
01:36paying Mark to let them play it.
