00:30Hey guys, how are you today?
00:41Welcome to Masterclass Work From Home Wellness, How to Navigate Your New Normal.
00:47I'm super excited to be here with you guys.
00:49I'm one of the co-founders of Heal House.
00:51If you don't know about Heal House, we are a wellness space in Brooklyn.
00:54We do holistic practices, so everything from daily yoga and meditation classes to workshops
01:00to private practitioner services, everything from therapy to naturopathic health services,
01:05massage.
01:06And we have a really big focus on mental health and community and how to shift the culture
01:11around wellness.
01:12How do we make this more accessible, especially to us, to black and brown people?
01:16How do we make it accessible to us when it's usually not catered to us?
01:20So what I'm going to do, I'm really excited about this segment, but what we're going to
01:23do is we're going to do a quick grounding exercise.
01:25It's going to take two minutes.
01:27This is also a tool that you can pretty much use at any time when you're feeling stressed
01:32or you're feeling anxious.
01:33So what we're going to do is we can just sit up straight really quickly.
01:37You're going to put your right hand on your heart and you're going to feel really deeply
01:40into yourself.
01:42And you're going to put your left hand on your abdomen.
01:44And what we're going to do is we're going to inhale for four.
01:47We're going to hold at the top for seven and we're going to release for eight.
01:51This is called the four, seven, eight breath.
01:53Okay.
01:54So just come with me right now.
01:55So we're going to go inhale for four.
01:59We're going to hold at the top for seven.
02:04And we're going to release for eight.
02:10Do that one more time.
02:11In for four.
02:11Four.
02:14Hold at the top for seven.
02:18And release for eight.
02:23One more time.
02:24Inhale for four.
02:27Hold at the top for seven.
02:33And release for eight.
02:38So this is a really good practice.
02:40I feel like super zen right now.
02:42This is a really good practice that you guys can use at home anytime you're feeling anxious,
02:47anytime you're feeling overwhelmed.
02:48So we'll use that and get back to that throughout this segment.
02:51So today, the first thing I want to say to you guys, as entrepreneurs, you were built for
02:56this.
02:57So I want you to really feel empowered about what that means because I've been an entrepreneur
03:02for eight years.
03:03And even though we are in this really crazy time and we really don't have all the answers,
03:08this is something that we're almost kind of accustomed to with living check to check,
03:13finding that next client, finding that new resource.
03:16So we have this built inside of us.
03:18We are meant to be able to overcome this, especially as black women.
03:23We know how to be resourceful.
03:24So I just want to start out this segment with you really plugging that into your mind right
03:30now and understanding like, I'm built for this.
03:32I got this because we have to move forward with an abundance mindset right now.
03:36And in order to do that, we have to make sure that self is first centered.
03:41So I'm going to talk about today, how do we holistically balance body, mind, and spirit?
03:46Because a lot of times we don't understand that it's easy to get caught up in the things,
03:50especially here living in New York City, where it's very much a constant grind culture.
03:56There's not a sense of within this culture of balance, right?
04:00But really, we can't bring our best selves.
04:02We can't be well if we're not looking at ourselves first and understanding that balancing
04:06ourselves is what fuels our creative pursuits.
04:09It's what fuels how healthy we feel and how we have the fortitude and capacity to do the
04:15work that we do as entrepreneurs, because it's a very nuanced one.
04:19It can be very stressful at times.
04:22But if we are maintaining our personal health, body, mind, spirit, we're going to be able
04:27to get through this.
04:28So what I'm going to do is I'm going to break this into three different segments, and we'll
04:32go over all the things that I basically recommend for you that you can do while you're working
04:38from home and to manage your mental health, to manage your physical health, to manage your
04:42spiritual health, because all of these things are integral for us to be able to be living
04:47well, especially in a time where we're dealing with a pandemic and we're dealing with a virus
04:53that's affecting our health.
04:54It's really important that we nourish these things within our home.
04:57Okay?
04:58So we have 20 minutes.
05:00We have about, we have less than that now.
05:03So we're going to, we're going to blitz through this, but it's going to be very helpful and
05:05resourceful for you guys.
05:06And I hope you get a lot from it.
05:08So first we're going to start with mind.
05:09I know, like I just mentioned about anxiety and stress.
05:12That's something that everyone is dealing with right now.
05:15Our mental health is definitely being tested.
05:18It's being compromised in multiple ways.
05:21Everyone's experiencing different things.
05:24Everyone's experiencing different triggers, resurfaced traumas.
05:28And when we're working, those things can be very, you know, distracting.
05:32They can, they can pretty much, you know, take us out or not have us feeling well.
05:36So it's really important that we keep our mental capacity strong.
05:40So the first thing I'm going to talk about are herbal remedies, our plant allies.
05:45So it's really important to understand what is anxiety.
05:49Anxiety is a flight or fight response.
05:51It's actually something that our body builds and creates.
05:53So it's, we actually bring it onto ourselves as crazy as that is.
05:56And it is something that you can manage in different ways.
05:59You just have to be mindful of what's going on, right?
06:01So what happens is, is when we get anxious, cortisol production starts to build in the body.
06:06And that's what leads to anxious feelings, tingling, chest pain, feelings of being stressed out, fatigue.
06:13So it's really important that we manage those things.
06:15And herbal remedies is something that I highly recommend for folks as one of the things that you can use to alleviate these symptoms.
06:22So with plant allies, with, with plant medicine, I really recommend people to kind of explore what works for them.
06:28Cause that's how, that's how urban rimbled herbal remedies work.
06:32We gravitate towards what works for us.
06:34So things that you can look into just off that are quick nervines, adaptogens, nervines are built for your nervous system.
06:41So these are herbs like wood, betony, passion flower, skullcap.
06:46All these things are really great for depression.
06:48They're really great for anxiety.
06:50And I highly recommend that you look into them.
06:53They come in the form of teas.
06:54They come in the form of tinctures.
06:56On Heel House, we serve, we sell lots of different teas that have nervines in them.
07:02If you want to check them out, you can also look at a lot of different places that have these herbs in them.
07:06So they're really helpful.
07:07Another thing is adaptogens.
07:09They're mood stabilizers.
07:10So it's really great.
07:11They're really awesome herbs like licorice root, go to colo.
07:15Also really great.
07:16If you're feeling low, it's going to give you what you need.
07:19It's going to bring you up.
07:20And if you're feeling extra high, it's going to bring you down.
07:22So it really works to balance your system.
07:24So these are a couple of different herbs that I recommend that you can check out.
07:28I also recommend consulting with whether it's a holistic doctor, herbalist, naturopath.
07:33We also have those resources at Heel House virtually now.
07:37If you want to dive deeper and if you're dealing with a specific ailment that you need assistance with,
07:41you can definitely check that out.
07:43Another thing that I highly recommend is CBD.
07:47It's a non-psychoactive part of the hemp plant.
07:49So it's the healing part of the hemp plant.
07:51No, it does not get you high.
07:52It's a really incredible plant ally.
07:56So I use it daily.
07:57It really helps with managing stress, anxiety.
08:00It's great if you have sleep issues because right now it can be very difficult to navigate.
08:04It really works with nerve issues, arthritis, all these things.
08:10And you can actually rub it in your skin topically.
08:11You can also take it orally.
08:13Again, with that, make sure that you're doing your research on the type of CBD that you're
08:17looking at, making sure it's organic, full spectrum.
08:21It's not an isolate.
08:22So things like this, make sure you're doing the knowledge.
08:24You're reaching out to people for resources.
08:26But I highly recommend things like this to really manage stress and anxiety at this time.
08:31So another thing I want to bring up is meditation.
08:35We're huge on that.
08:37Right now, we've, like most people, we've pivoted our services and we've moved them online.
08:41So we do daily yoga and meditation classes online.
08:43But it's been integral for me daily to just reconnect with body and mind.
08:48Because right now, it's constantly something, whether it's the news, whether it's social media,
08:53that we're allowing to sink in and we need to make sure that we're basically balancing
08:58everything that's going on up here.
09:00So even if it's five minutes, 15 minutes, whatever it is, start just sitting with yourself,
09:06plugging into breath, plugging into just going through, plugging into self-awareness and identifying
09:13what is it that you need to nourish yourself right now so you can manage being an entrepreneur.
09:18So you can manage basically getting those creative juices flowing and to feel fulfilled.
09:24So I highly recommend meditation as a practice that you can start to engage in to see how it
09:29works for you.
09:31Another thing that is really important right now is community.
09:34I know you guys have probably been feeling this on all kinds of levels, whether it's being
09:39in isolation, doing things virtually now, which is not the normal.
09:43But reaching out to friends, family, checking in with them, basically sharing what you're
09:50feeling, leaning in for support.
09:52You don't have to go through this alone.
09:53If you need that extra support, something like therapy is really, really important right
09:58now.
09:59And therapy has transitioned virtually to teletherapy.
10:03This is something that we also have at Heal House Digitally as well.
10:06But there's so many resources right now for online therapy.
10:10I know funds are an issue right now.
10:11We have sliding scale prices.
10:14A lot of therapists are doing sliding scale right now.
10:16So don't feel disempowered about that.
10:19You can always ask therapists if they can meet you where you're at.
10:23Also, just community resources.
10:25There's a lot of online workshops happening right now.
10:27A lot of online seminars that support mental health right now.
10:31Checking different therapists online that are doing group sessions.
10:35This weekend, we're actually doing something called Healthy Conversation.
10:38And things like that are going to be group support in order for you to feel like you're
10:43not alone going through this because everyone is going through this right now.
10:46And everyone is dealing with the same issues.
10:48So make sure you're asking for help and leaning into your community.
10:52Another thing that people are doing, I feel like, are sharing right now is the work from
10:57home schedule.
10:57So this is super beneficial to create some sort of structure for yourself, especially if
11:02maybe you weren't working in your home and you weren't feeling you weren't used to kind
11:06of what that dynamic is about.
11:08So it is important to create a space in your home that feels separate from your day to day
11:14like your bedroom or what you're doing and creating a space that's just for work that
11:18creates an environment that nourishes that experience and where you're having a separation
11:23at the best of your ability, right?
11:25Because we're all in different living situations, but creating a scenario where it works for you.
11:31But one thing I do want to say about the work from home schedule is it can add some pressure
11:36about how you're supposed to perform right now.
11:38And I do want you to just understand that we are not in normal circumstances.
11:43What we're experiencing, we've never experienced before at this capacity.
11:47And so really try to be kind to yourself.
11:50Don't be hard on yourself about your productivity, how you're doing things.
11:55Yes, it is the time to grind, but like let's consciously grind.
12:00Let's make sure that we're pivoting in alignment.
12:02This is something I've been saying a lot recently because the more pressure and criticism that
12:08we put on ourselves right now because we are in that space where that can happen, it's not
12:13going to serve us long term.
12:15So make sure that, you know, if you have your work from home schedule and you're not checking
12:19all those boxes, give yourself a break.
12:21If you end up doing something for yourself, sometimes that is the remedy that you need
12:26to feel strong that day, to feel, to have mental clarity and to be able to continue on.
12:32Another thing that I'm going to bring up is isolation.
12:34So some of us are isolated in our homes.
12:37Others have roommates.
12:39Now our kids are home and everyone's in the same house.
12:43Everyone's on top of each other.
12:44And it may be difficult to navigate.
12:47So from the isolation standpoint, like I said, make sure you're leaning into community.
12:52Make sure that you're calling your friends, your people, that you can basically share what
12:56you're going through.
12:57If isolation is the issue for you, if you have a roommate and you're on top of them,
13:02open communication is everything right now.
13:04So sharing with your roommate, communicating, hey, I need 15 minutes in the morning when I wake
13:10up to just ground and to feel good.
13:12I need an hour to work out in the living room.
13:14Do you mind respecting that?
13:16And us building a schedule that works for both of us where we feel comfortable in the home.
13:21Because some people don't have that option right now of having more space and more room.
13:27Another thing is people are maybe in an abusive scenario right now as well.
13:31You may be in a space where you're with someone that, you know, it's not a comfortable situation.
13:36So make sure that when you're in, if you are in a space like that, that you're reaching
13:41out for support and help, because we are in very much a real situation where everyone's
13:46living circumstances are different and we need to hold space and try to support everyone
13:53that's in different scenarios.
13:55Another thing that may be happening right now is people may be experiencing grief.
14:00It's a very real thing that is, you know, happening where people are losing loved ones.
14:06Once again, I'll go back to the therapy component and leaning into your community.
14:10You don't have to experience these things alone.
14:13Make sure that you're taking time to process in the midst of work, in the midst of doing
14:17everything, whether it's taking care of kids.
14:19It's really important that you make time for yourself to process everything that's currently
14:24happening and in a way that serves you.
14:27So those are some of the mind tips that I'm recommending right now.
14:31Now, just make sure you're focusing on your mental health and nourishing that component
14:35to fuel what you're doing work-wise, because we can't separate these things.
14:41So the next section we're going to go into is body.
14:43So first and foremost, I don't know if you guys have been seeing the news.
14:50It's a very real thing right now that Black people, Black communities, we're experiencing
14:55deaths at a higher rate.
14:58This is not for by accident, and this is not about that we contract the virus more.
15:04We have pre-existing conditions, and this is a very extensive, drawn-out reasoning, and
15:13I can't dive deep into it, but part of it is that we don't have equal access to health care.
15:18Another part of it is that we're marketed things that are not healthy for us.
15:23We don't have accessibility to holistic resources.
15:26We live in food deserts.
15:28So these are things that we're currently dealing with having pre-existing conditions like diabetes,
15:32high blood pressure, and being in a situation where we're in a pandemic, it's not benefiting
15:38us because our immune response is down.
15:41We're dealing with things that our health is compromised in a situation like this.
15:46So as a collective, as a community, it's really important that we're spreading these resources
15:51around how to be healthy because we are at risk in this specific scenario.
15:57So I do want to go into a couple things of how to strengthen our body response.
16:02The first thing is clean eating.
16:04So right now, everybody wants to feel comfortable.
16:07Don't get it twisted.
16:07I've been eating pizza.
16:09I've had a couple cupcakes too, but for the most part, I'm making sure on my day-to-day,
16:13I'm eating clean.
16:15So that includes more greens, less processed sugar, less gluten.
16:22I'm doing things that are going to boost my immune response, that are going to build my
16:27strength, as opposed to things that are going to also affect my productivity, right?
16:32So if I'm eating a bunch of fried food and gluten and processed sugar, my mental clarity
16:38will be down, fatigue will be down.
16:41All these things will be more difficult.
16:44So in addition to that, spirit-wise right now, it's also, I'm running out of time, guys,
16:49so I got to wrap it up.
16:52But we're going to go into spirit a little bit.
16:55But also with, I just want to bring up with body, sunlight-wise, try to get outside as much
17:00as possible in a safe way.
17:03Make sure that you're wearing your mask and you're doing all those things, but try to get
17:06some sunlight because it's immunosuppressant when you're not actually getting sunlight,
17:12when you're not actually getting vitamin D.
17:14It's really hard for the body to maintain strength.
17:17So make sure that you're somehow getting sunlight in a healthy way and you're getting exercise,
17:22moving bad bacteria out of your body, strengthening your mind.
17:25Yoga is really great to move stress through your muscle tissue.
17:30All these things are really great for you to fortify yourself during this time.
17:34So getting into a spirit for a second, protect your energy, have boundaries.
17:39The news is very overwhelming right now.
17:41Social media can be very overwhelming right now.
17:44So make sure that your tunnel vision, you're making sure your focus is on your business and
17:49your own productivity and the things that you're doing and less about what everyone else is doing.
17:53You have to maintain your own vision and how you're going to develop moving forward and
17:58pivoting with your business.
18:00So making sure that you're setting those boundaries, protecting your energy is really necessary right
18:04now.
18:05Friends and family, make sure that you're editing and you're protecting your energy.
18:09I'm super empathic and I often absorb the energy of others.
18:12So make sure that you're processing and setting boundaries and making sure that you're bringing
18:19in only abundance and joy throughout this time.
18:22That you're making sure that you're understanding what's happening, you're expressing gratitude
18:26and you're processing the things.
18:28But joy is a remedy right now to maintain your strength.
18:32And lastly, get back to you.
18:35Right now, we are working a lot and we're doing all these things, but make sure that you're
18:40getting back to the essence of who you are because now you have this time to do these
18:45things, to explore maybe some creative pursuits that you haven't done, to start something new
18:49that's going to work in the new digital age as an entrepreneur, but make sure that you're
18:54being creative and allowing time for yourself just to explore what's good for you.
19:00But thanks, guys.
19:01This was really amazing.
19:02I appreciate you tuning in.
19:04We have a lot of resources, like I mentioned, on Heal House from private services to workshops
19:08to daily classes.
19:09We're here for you.
19:10We're doing a lot of donation programming weekly as well if you don't have the funds.
19:15And I just want you to know that we're here to support you.
19:17Community is here to support you.
19:18And we're going to get through this.
19:20Remember, you are built for this.
19:22Thanks, guys.
19:22Again, may you continue to be blessed and enjoy the rest of the day.
