00:00Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're looking at the worst adaptations of horror video games.
00:17Given that the game features an intricate web of alternate paths based on your decisions
00:33and reaction time, any kind of adaptation of Until Dawn was bound to feel a bit watered
00:39down.
00:40And that's just what happened with this movie.
00:42Instead of trying to follow the game's plot, the movie instead puts a group of friends
00:46in a time loop of horrors.
00:48After each grisly death, they awaken to try and make it out.
00:54Both the cast of characters and the story are paper-thin compared to what players got
01:02to experience.
01:03It isn't offensively bad, but its gimmick gets old quickly.
01:08And since you're left with an adaptation almost in name alone, we have to wonder what
01:12the point of this was.
01:14When we die, like, for real, do you think we get a chance to do it all again?
01:22I'm not.
01:26Number 9.
01:27Five Nights at Freddy's Protecting these cuddly critters and the proprietary technology that
01:32brings them to life is now your sacred duty.
01:36The thing that made Five Nights at Freddy's fun to begin with was its chilling simplicity.
01:41Creepy animatronics hunting you from the shadows.
01:44And while we appreciate the production design of the 2023 adaptation, it loses sight of what
01:49makes the premise work.
01:59Weighed down by a bloated, overly complicated narrative, the movie was stuffed with unnecessary
02:03plot points that took away from what should have been the main stars, the animatronics themselves.
02:09This diluted form of the game's iconic baddies, spread thinly out over the runtime, does them
02:15a disservice.
02:16Instead of the tight focus that made the game so enjoyable, the movie went in directions not
02:20many cared to see.
02:22We'll touch on the infamous movie franchise later, but Netflix's series adaptation of
02:36Resident Evil also got a fair amount of deserved criticism.
02:40I'm not saying he was right, or even good, but he could have been worse.
02:47It may have sounded promising since it was to deal with the outbreak of Umbrella's virus
02:58and maybe be a bit more in line with the game lore.
03:01Even still, splitting the focus across two timelines caused neither to be fully fleshed
03:06out, nor that entertaining.
03:08Tonal inconsistencies with its writing also mounted up, combining for an ultimately uneven
03:13and disappointing eight episodes.
03:15I don't think you can kill them all, so we have to learn how to live with them, like
03:20we do AIDS or Ebola or anything else that's trying to wipe out the human race.
03:26Fans of the games were particularly unkind, and it became one of Netflix's lowest rated
03:31shows ever.
03:32Unsurprisingly, it was cancelled after its first season.
03:35He won't do anything to me.
03:38What's hurting me hurts Umbrella, and let's face it, Umbrella is all you have.
03:45Number 7 Dead Rising Endgame
03:48You gotta be kidding me.
03:52Number 7 Dead Rising Endgame
03:56Following the equally disappointing Watchtower, this direct-to-streaming sequel stripped away
04:01the signature humor and over-the-top gameplay Dead Rising is known for.
04:05Instead, you're treated to a generic thriller that seems to have zombies as an afterthought.
04:10Hooray.
04:11First time around I didn't have any gear either, but I survived.
04:17We need to remember the reason we're down here.
04:191.5 million lives, and we're running out of time.
04:23Shoved into the middle of the game series, the plot and its one-note characters do little
04:27to hold your interest.
04:28Nothing here holds the same humorous edge found in the game series, nor the chaos that comes
04:33from crafting wacky weapon combinations to mow down hordes of the undead.
04:38They manage to take something as violent and zany as Dead Rising and make it a boring,
04:43routine zombie movie with nowhere near the same level of heart, which is a sad accomplishment.
04:49I'll come back for you.
04:51If I beat the clock.
04:53You will.
04:56Number 6 Doom
04:58Look I got an idea, why don't you ask your CO what your orders are?
05:03To contain and neutralize the threat, protect the civilians and retrieve UAC property.
05:11We've finally done here because I've got a job to do.
05:15Here's where we start to get to the truly terrible.
05:18With a simple but very effective premise about a space marine battling demons from hell
05:23on Mars, the adaptation takes everything exciting about Doom and throws it out the window.
05:29Instead of demons, there are genetically enhanced humans.
05:32Instead of a lone warrior tearing through hordes, the movie is full of bland, forgettable characters
05:37despite being led by Carl Urban and Dwayne Johnson.
05:40I have lost four soldiers.
05:45What are you people experimenting with up here?
05:50It all comes off as very generic sci-fi when the source material is a trailblazer of video games.
05:56In fact, the best moment is a first person sequence filmed to look like the games.
06:02Everything else surrounding it will only bring fans disappointment.
06:05If you killed the kid, we're all killers, Reaper.
06:10It's what they pay us for.
06:14Number 5 Resident Evil The Final Chapter
06:18While there are a lot of them, you could argue there isn't a single good Resident Evil movie.
06:24And you wouldn't find many who would argue against you.
06:27But to avoid having the franchise take up half the list, we're going with the particularly
06:31sour note that Paul W.S. Anderson's run ended on with the final chapter.
06:36My satellites show there are 4,472 humans remaining on the surface of the Earth.
06:42They will cease to exist in under 48 hours.
06:46It is a dreadful slog across the finish line and a definitive example of style over substance.
06:53Not that the style is good to begin with.
06:55The over-reliance on CGI effects and chaotic editing choices leaves the action as muddled and messy as the plot.
07:03Although knowing you'll get nothing resembling the games in the final chapter, the movie even fails to be a satisfying conclusion to its own storyline.
07:11The antivirus is airborne, spread by the winds.
07:15It could take years for it to reach every corner of the Earth.
07:18Number 4 Silent Hill Revelation
07:22I don't think you should go.
07:23What?
07:24I think your dad's right. I don't think you should go to Silent Hill.
07:27I need to find him.
07:28You read his notebooks. He wants you to run.
07:30While the first live-action Silent Hill movie had some issues, when it comes to tone and visuals, it was a pretty entertaining horror flick.
07:38But there's no one out there defending the sequel.
07:41Unlike the first movie, it couldn't even get the tone of the source material right.
07:45Gone was any sense of psychological depth, replaced by a nonsensical plot that prioritized cheap jump scares with painfully bad 3D effects.
07:55You're the only part of a lesser that feels love.
07:59You balance her hate.
08:01But you should never have come back.
08:03It was truly hard to follow along.
08:06With too much messy lore and exposition dumps, the story felt like an afterthought that was overstuffed to compensate.
08:13It was genuinely painful for fans to sit through, watching iconic symbols like Pyramid Head paraded around with little to no thought given to purpose or context.
08:23And sacrifices have to be made.
08:27Go to hell!
08:28Can't you see?
08:31We're already here.
08:32Number 3
08:33Dead Trigger
08:35If you don't know the Dead Trigger game, it's a free-to-play mobile zombie shooter.
08:46And yeah, you wouldn't expect a mobile game to turn into a good movie, and obviously you'd be right.
08:52The simple premise of shooting zombies was stretched out to a truly dull hour and a half.
08:57It's almost impressive that it manages to be less entertaining than tapping on your phone screen for the same amount of time.
09:03There's enemies like no other this country has ever faced.
09:08Our friends, our neighbors, our families.
09:17These kids are the only chance this country has to survive.
09:21Characters are entirely forgettable, and the disorganized plot is stitched together by generic action scenes that hold no weight.
09:28Awkwardly paced, and with nowhere near the budget needed to back up any good effects,
09:33Dead Trigger seems more like a low-cost cash grab than a worthy cinematic venture.
09:38It could happen.
09:41If I can't do it, you'll do it for me.
09:44Promise me that.
09:48I promise.
09:48Number 2
09:50House of the Dead
09:51It was my fault!
09:53It was my fault!
09:56Were you here?
09:57Did you see it?
09:58Director Uwe Boll holds a lot of notoriety among players due to his horrid video game adaptations.
10:04In 2003, fans of Sega's light gun zombie shooter had to suffer as Boll took the House of the Dead IP
10:10and dragged it through the mud.
10:12Following an island rave ruined by a zombie outbreak, it quickly earned a bad reputation.
10:17It took the silly but satisfyingly violent mayhem of the arcade game and turned it into a mess of bizarre
10:23creative choices, cheesy dialogue and performances, and an unpleasant visual style made up of horrendous
10:29effects and makeup.
10:30It's one of the worst game adaptations in existence, let alone a horror one.

11:011. Alone in the Dark
11:18Alone in the Dark
11:19Game deserves respect as a pioneer in the survival horror genre.
11:23But how that legacy has been treated over the years is downright heartbreaking.
11:27At the top of the terrible pile is this Uwe Boll adaptation from 2005 starring Christian
11:33Slater and Tara Reid. It is, without a doubt, the director's most egregious crime against video game fans.
11:46Nowhere is the game's atmospheric dread or intricate mystery.
11:51Instead, viewers are forced through a convoluted plot, laughably bad CGI monsters, and poor lighting.
11:58It's wall-to-wall terrible, panned for its low-budget look, wooden performances,
12:02and a strong desire to be anything unlike the source material.
12:07House of the Dead is awful, but this is Boll's magnum opus.
12:11The answers I've been looking for my whole life could be on the other side of this thing.
12:15Some doors are meant to stay shut.
12:17Which of these poor adaptations did you have to sit through?
