00:00People voted on Sunday in Guinea-Bissau's presidential and legislative elections,
00:05with incumbent President Umaro Sissoko Mbalo seeking a second term.
00:10The polls come at a critical time in West Africa,
00:13where democracy has recently been challenged by several disputed polls.
00:17Mbalo will face off against 11 other presidential candidates,
00:20including Fernando Diaz, a relative political newcomer.
00:24He's backed by former Prime Minister Domingo Simos Pereira,
00:27who's leader of the main opposition party that led the fight for independence from Portugal.
00:32Both Pereira and his party have been barred from the polls
00:34after the authorities said they failed to submit their application on time.
00:39Analysts say they're expecting the election to be a close race between Mbalo and Diaz,
00:44with the winner needing more than 50% of the vote to win outright.
00:48If Mbalo were to be victorious, he'll become the first leader in three decades
00:52to make it through to a second consecutive term in the West African nation.
00:57Guinea-Bissau's endured multiple coups,
01:00and the exclusion of the main opposition plus rivalry between military factions
01:03has raised fears about a potential post-poll crisis.
