00:00The Blue Beetle
00:12Leaping down upon the underworld to smash gangland
00:21Come the mysterious, all-powerful character
00:24Who is a problem to the police
00:25But a crusader for law
00:27In reality, Dan Garrett
00:29A rookie patrolman
00:30Loved by everyone
00:32But suspected by none of being
00:34The Blue Beetle
00:35As the Blue Beetle
00:37He hides behind a strange mask
00:39And a suit of impenetrable blue chain armor
00:42Flexible as silk
00:43But stronger than steel
00:45Today's transcribed episode of the Fox feature, the Blue Beetle
01:01Is entitled The Jewel Mystery of Channel Island
01:05Channel Island lies about 12 miles off the coast
01:08Near the sea lanes of transatlantic shipping
01:11Sweat by cool ocean breezes
01:13But difficult of access due to its rocky shores
01:17It is a favorite resort of the wealthy
01:19Whose yachts dot the surface of the island's almost completely landlocked harbor
01:24As our story opens today in the office of Police Commissioner Donnelly
01:28Patrolman Dan Garrett, who is really the Blue Beetle
01:31And Mike Mannigan are being assigned to special duty by the commissioner
01:35Now, there have been a number of mysterious jewel robberies
01:39At the Bonaire Hotel on Channel Island
01:41And we've been called in to work on the case
01:44I selected you two men because I had confidence in you
01:47You work well together
01:48Thank you, sir
01:49To whom shall we report out there?
01:52Well, Mr. Halstead, the new manager of the Bonaire
01:54This Mr. Halstead, the new manager
01:56Do you know anything about him, Commissioner?
01:58Well, according to the owner of the hotel
02:00Who, incidentally, is a friend of mine
02:02He came to him highly recommended by a hotel owner at Virginia Beach
02:06The Bonaire's rather exclusive hotel, isn't it?
02:09Yes, it caters to the wealthier class
02:11Is this the first year jewel robberies have occurred there?
02:14I believe so
02:15Is that significant, if you ask me?
02:18Perhaps
02:19But run down every clue
02:20We'll do our best, sir
02:21Yes, I know you will
02:22I feel I'm sending the two best men I have
02:25Thank you, sir
02:25Now, any further questions?
02:27Yes, sir
02:27Has any of the loot been recovered?
02:30Well, not so far
02:31An attempt has been made to keep the matter as quiet as possible
02:35But the news has leaked out
02:36And people are already beginning to leave the hotel
02:39For other vacation centers
02:40Then we'd better work fast
02:41That's right
02:42Now, any more questions?
02:43No, sir
02:43Then you'd better get going
02:44There are only two boats a day
02:46You take the evening boat at 7 o'clock
02:48You'll have to hurry
02:49And remember, I'm depending on you two
02:51Yes, sir
02:52And thank you, sir
02:57What are you taking with you, Danny?
03:05Beside your blue beetle chain armor and mask
03:07And the change of clue
03:08That portable radio locator
03:10And several of those tiny radioactive crystals you discovered
03:13Will that radio locator fit under your arm?
03:15Yes, I've tested it already
03:17Well, good luck, Danny
03:18I hope you're successful in apprehending the jewel team
03:21Thanks, Doc
03:21That must be Mannegan calling for me
03:24I said I'd meet him here
03:25Well, hello, Doc France
03:27Is Sherlock Holmes de Garek here?
03:29Yes, he's back here, Mannegan
03:31Hello, Detective Mannegan
03:33Where's your overnight bag?
03:35Well, my suitcase is out in the car
03:37Well, if you're ready, Mike, we'll start
03:39Well, what's in your bag, Danny?
03:41Oh, a few simple necessities
03:42Toothbrush, shaving kit, bathing suit, water wings, rubber boots, pajamas, and winter overcoat
03:49What?
03:50No umbrella
03:51I only carry that in the topic
03:53Come on, Mike, let's go
03:56My nostrils crave the smell of salt to the air
03:59You say, Commissioner Donnelly sent you Mr...
04:17Uh, Garrett
04:17Patrolman Dan Garrett, Mr. Halstead
04:20Ah, yes, Mr. Garrett
04:21My partner, Officer Mannegan, is having a look around
04:23I expect him any minute
04:25I see
04:25Well, I don't know whether you'll be able to discover any more than Groggins has or not
04:29Groggins is our house detective
04:31He was with me at Virginia Beach
04:33Oh
04:33I'll have you meet him
04:35Miss Tingley, ask Mr. Groggins
04:38Step in, please
04:38What's that?
04:39Oh, very well
04:41Send him right in
04:42Your partner, Officer Mannegan, is here
04:44That's fine
04:45You said for me?
04:47Oh, yes, Groggins
04:48Come in
04:48This is, uh, Officer Garrett from New York City Police Force on special assignment to help us catch the jewel
04:53Oh, silly detective
04:55Well, not exactly
04:57I'm only a patrolman on special assignment by orders of the commissioner
05:00Oh, sort of a rookie detective
05:03Well, I never heard it put just that way, but perhaps you're right
05:06Come in
05:07Mr. Halstead?
05:09Yes, come in
05:10Oh, hello, Danny
05:11Hello, Mike
05:11This is Mr. Halstead and this is Mr. Groggins
05:14My partner, Officer Mannegan
05:16Oh, hello, Mannegan
05:17Another rookie detective?
05:19Won't you sit down, Officer Mannegan?
05:20Sir, thanks
05:21Hey, what's that crack about rookie detective?
05:24Mr. Groggins has just coined a new title, Mike
05:26Rookie detective
05:27Oh, I see
05:29Well, then maybe he's already caught the jewel keys and we're just wasting our time
05:34Uh, Groggins
05:34Yes, sir
05:35I think you'd better get on the job
05:36The guest will be dancing in the ballroom and you'll have to keep a sharp look out on the upper floors
05:40Come in
05:41Well, pardon me, sir
05:44But Mrs. Thomas would like to have her jewel case from the safe
05:46No, just a minute
05:47Good
05:48She must be getting dolled up for the dinners
05:50She'll come down looking like an old-fashioned glass chandelier
05:55Here you are, boy
05:56And be sure to get a receipt
05:57Yes, sir
05:57Just a moment
05:58May I see those jewels?
06:00Certainly
06:00Here, I'll open the case for you
06:03Boy, there's a fortune in diamonds and pearls there
06:08Yes
06:08Mrs. Thomas is very wealthy
06:10This necklace I'm holding must be worth a king's ransom
06:13It's no wonder jewel thieves like this hotel with paperware and stuff like that
06:18That mannigan is not stuff
06:20It's high-class goods
06:21Here you are, Mr. Halstead
06:23Put these back before they stick to my fingers
06:25Here you are, boy
06:26Take them up to Mrs. Thomas
06:27Yes, sir
06:28Now, you'd better go along, Groggins
06:29Just to make sure the jewels reach their proper destination
06:31Okay, I'll take care of them
06:33Hey, I'll see you fellas around
06:35Sure thing
06:36We'll be around till the jewel thieves are caught
06:39Uh, by the way, Mr. Halstead
06:42Uh, what's outside those windows?
06:44A water
06:44The sea comes right up to the cliff
06:46It's a sheer drop to the water below them
06:48Deep enough for a boat to navigate?
06:50Why, yes
06:51What are you driving at?
06:53Nothing
06:53I'm just wondering how the stolen goods could have reached the mainland
06:57I understand everybody using a regular ferry was searched before going aboard after the previous robberies
07:02That's right
07:03I wasn't aware, though, that any of the stolen jewelry had been found
07:07I see
07:08Well, good night, Mr. Halstead
07:10If Lannigan and I see any suspicious characters about, we'll let you know
07:13Do that
07:14I will be extremely grateful
07:16After all, these robberies reflect on me
07:19Yes, they do, Mr. Halstead
07:21Good night
07:38Help! Help! Help! I've been robbed!
07:43Why, that's Mrs. Thomas
07:44Another robbery
07:45That's the third this week
07:46I'm leaving this hotel first thing in the morning
07:48This is the last straw
07:49I'm cured of this case
07:51Help! I've been robbed!
07:53Where's Mr. Halstead?
07:54I've been robbed!
07:55Hey, what's the trouble, ladies?
07:56My jewels have been stolen
07:57Every jewel I own
07:59All right, now, here's Mr. Halstead
08:00Oh, Mr. Thomas
08:01Come into my office, please
08:02This is terrible, but we'll find them
08:04We'll catch the themes
08:05Right in here, please
08:07Oh, thank you
08:07Sounders
08:08Yes, sir
08:08Tell musicians to continue the dance music
08:10Just as if nothing had happened
08:11Yes, sir
08:12Now, Mr. Thomas
08:13Just sit down here and tell us all about it
08:15Officer Mannegan here is from the York City Police
08:17He's here to help us, too
08:18That's right
08:19Now, where's Officer Garrett?
08:21Well, he said he was going for a walk
08:23Find time to take a walk
08:24Oh, Danny ain't wasting his time
08:27You can be sure of that
08:28Hey, what's wrong, Mr. Halstead?
08:30Another robbery
08:30Mrs. Thomas here
08:32Well, I'll be
08:32Now, now, just calm yourself, Mrs. Thomas
08:34And Thomas is all about it
08:35All right
08:37After I left the ballroom about 15 minutes ago
08:41I retired to my room
08:43I removed my pearl necklace
08:45And put it with my other jewels
08:47I undressed and went into the bathroom
08:49To take my shower before retiring
08:52Then I came back into the room
08:54My jewel case was gone
08:56This looks to me like an inside jar
08:58The Blue Beetle
09:00Yes, the Blue Beetle
09:02Did someone lose this jewel case?
09:05Hey, it's that cook you read about in the papers
09:07He's the jewel thief
09:08Oh, but this jewel case is empty
09:10Blue Beetle?
09:12I'm going to arrest you on suspicion of robbery
09:15Can you prove it?
09:15No, but I'll take a chance
09:17Just on general principle
09:18Put up your hands, Blue Beetle
09:20Put up your gun, Grubbins
09:21Bullets can't penetrate that blue chain armor
09:24Besides, you might hit Mrs. Thomas there
09:26Oh, dear
09:27I just slapped these handcuffs on him
09:29And Danny and I
09:30Will take them back to the mainland in the morning
09:32But my jewels
09:33Where are my jewels?
09:34Your jewels are in this room, madam
09:36In this room
09:36So you have got them, Blue Beetle
09:39No, but one of you four people
09:40Has them on his person
09:41That's a lie
09:42Why, you cheap masquerading crook
09:44I'll...
09:44The fire gun!
09:45See where it is, Gorgensen
09:46Call the fire department
09:47I'll join you in a minute
09:48Okay, Chief
09:49But don't let the Blue Beetle get away
09:51He's the jewel thing
09:52Well, gentlemen
09:54The Blue Beetle has found out
09:57What he wanted to know
09:57I'm leaving you now
09:59What's up, Menningin?
10:00Guard the door
10:00Sorry, gentlemen
10:01But I'm not going that way
10:03Oh, look
10:04Stop him
10:05But he's going to go
10:06Well, I'll be
10:08He chokes out to the window
10:10If a hundred foot drop to the water below
10:12That's the end of the Blue Beetle
10:14But I still haven't got my jewels
10:17Oh, that was a high dive
10:40Lucky I learned to dive and swim well at college
10:44I wonder what Gorgensen thought
10:48When he found out the fire gong
10:49Was a false alarm
10:50I wanted to separate him and Halstead
10:52To discover which had the jewels
10:54Now I know
10:55Now to get back to the hotel
10:57Without being seen
10:58And rejoin Menningin
10:59In my true character
11:00Of Dan Garrett
11:01Poor Mike
11:03He let the Blue Beetle
11:04Slip through his fingers again
11:06Oh, hello, Danny
11:18Hello, Mike
11:19Eating again?
11:20Yes
11:21Say, where have you been?
11:22Down by the waterfront
11:23I was looking for you
11:24We've had a bit of excitement
11:26While you were gone
11:27Is that so?
11:27Is that so?
11:29We've had a robbery
11:30A false fire alarm
11:32And I almost captured the Blue Beetle
11:34Again?
11:34Yeah, but he slipped out of me fingers
11:37And died through his death
11:38The poor devil
11:39Out of Halstead's office window
11:41Right through the windowpane he died
11:43Say, sit down
11:44And I'll have the way
11:45To bring you an order of this chicken
11:47Oh, that isn't chicken, Mike
11:48That's squab
11:49Squab, is it?
11:50I thought it was a baby chicken
11:52Oh, that's a young pigeon
11:53Pigeon?
11:55Oh, that's what all them pigeons is for
11:57Out back
11:58Did you say pigeons out back?
12:00Sure
12:01A big roost full of them
12:02Hmm
12:03Say, do you know something, Danny?
12:05What, Mike?
12:06I've got me suspicions of Halstead
12:08The manager of this hotel?
12:09Sure
12:09I've been putting two and two together
12:13And what's the answer?
12:14Virginia Beach
12:15Virginia Beach?
12:16Yes
12:16He came here from a hotel at Virginia Beach
12:19That's right
12:20Recommended by the owner of the hotel
12:22He used to man him
12:23Right again
12:24Well, now
12:25If he could scare people away from this hotel
12:28And drop a hint or two
12:29About the beauties of Virginia Beach
12:32He might be able to drum up a little trade
12:34For his old bar
12:35Good reasoning, Mike
12:36But what about the stolen jewels?
12:38Oh, he could hide them a while
12:40And later return them to the owners
12:42Anonymously
12:43Anonymously
12:45Yeah, that's it
12:46You may be right, Mike
12:47Well, good night
12:49I'll see you in the morning
12:50You go out to bed?
12:51I've got some figuring to do
12:53Figuring?
12:54Yep
12:54I'm going to put two and two together
12:56And see what I get
12:57My radio locator indicates the pearls are not far away
13:17The closer I get to the dove coat
13:19The stronger the signal I get
13:20What's that?
13:23Someone coming out of the dove coat
13:24And a dozen
13:26Fourteen, fifteen, sixteen
13:27Twenty pigeons
13:28Whirling up into the sky
13:30Now they're heading for the mainland
13:31The radio locator's signal is fading
13:34I was right
13:35Those pigeons are carrying the stolen jewels
13:38To a hideout on the mainland
13:39And that figure stealing away is
13:41Good evening, stranger
13:42Beautiful moonlight night after storm
13:45Yes, it is
13:45Say, can you rule a boat?
13:47I reckon I can
13:48Been pulling an oar nine hundred sixty years
13:50Throw me out to that fee plane in a hurry
13:52I'll give you five dollars
13:52Been to a masquerade party at the hotel?
13:56Masquerade?
13:56Yeah, I see
13:57You got on a blue suit and a mask
13:59I kind of thought
14:00Maybe
14:00Thanks, man
14:01I got to get out that fee plane in a hurry
14:04Oh, that's
14:04That's Cyrus Weldington's carry
14:06I don't care whose plane it is
14:07I'm going to borrow it
14:09Say, if you're drunk, mister
14:10It's joy riding
14:11And if you're sober
14:13It's thievery
14:13I wouldn't do it if I was you, mister
14:16You see
14:17I'm the sheriff
14:18Well, if you can roll faster than I can swim
14:21Come and get me
14:22I must be taking the right direction
14:39My radio locator's giving a stronger signal
14:42I'm lucky I got a chance to handle the Thomas necklace yesterday
14:46When Holtz had got it out of the safe for Mrs. Thomas
14:48Those radioactive crystals I inserted inside the pearls leave a perfect trail
14:53There are the pigeons, silhouetted against the sky
14:59Ah, they're spiraling down to those woods
15:03Ah, now they've disappeared
15:06I'll have to put this plane down in that cove there and trail the pigeons by daylight
15:11By that time, the thief may have arrived to claim the jewels
15:15Hello?
15:39Hello, Doc
15:40This is Danny
15:41Oh, hello, Danny
15:42Hello, where are you?
15:43In a seaplane along the coast somewhere
15:45I'm in the Blue Beetle costume
15:47And I'm talking to you over the Blue Beetle part of the wireless telephone
15:51Are you all right?
15:52Sure
15:52I found the jewels and I'm waiting for the thief to turn up in the morning
15:56Oh, where's Mannigan?
15:57Still on the island
15:58Now, look
15:59I want you to wire him from me, as Dan Garrett, to Shadow Doggan
16:03Got that?
16:04Yes, yes, I've got it
16:05I've got to make Mannigan believe I'll return to the mainland to follow a clue
16:09Understand?
16:10Perfectly, Danny
16:11Okay, Doc
16:11If this case works out the way I think it will
16:14You and I are going to celebrate with a big Memphis squad
16:17Hey, where's your partner this morning, Mannigan?
16:31Oh, he went ashore last night
16:33Walked out on you, huh?
16:35Oh, not Danny
16:35He's working on a clue
16:37How did he get to the mainland?
16:39Swim?
16:40Ain't no boats running
16:41Danny has ways of getting around
16:44He's a smart lad, that one
16:46Say
16:46Maybe you two ain't cops
16:49Maybe you two are the jewel thieves
16:52And maybe your grandmother was queen of the Eskimos
16:55Oh, yeah?
16:56Well, I'm going ashore
16:57What for?
16:58Why, uh, there's some equipment I want to get
17:01I'll go with you
17:02No, you better stay here on guard
17:04Danny wired me to meet him on the mainland
17:06Oh, well, okay
17:08Come on, then
17:09We can just make the boat
17:10I've got a hunch we're on the right track
17:13Me, boy?
17:14You've said a mouthful
17:15Yeah, the chief ought to be here soon
17:27Yeah
17:28Yeah, he sure made a haul this time
17:29Ought to bring a hundred crayons
17:31No, no, not from a fence
17:32Oh, we don't need a fence to sell them pearls and diamonds
17:35They ain't mounted, it's still in a necklace
17:37You can sell them individually
17:39Quiet, quiet, somebody's coming
17:40Hey, Bugsy
17:42Yeah, it's okay, boss
17:44How many pigeons arrived?
17:45Twenty-two
17:46Good
17:46Did you take the little silk bags off their legs?
17:49Sure, boss, sure
17:50They're all here
17:51And the jewels, too
17:52Well, I buried the settings back in the dove coat
17:54Let me have the jewels and we'll scram out of here
17:56Where are we going, boss?
17:58Rio
17:58We're all going to have a long vacation
18:01But not in Rio
18:02The Blue Beetle
18:04Yes, the Blue Beetle
18:06Holtzard said he was
18:08Holtzard was wrong
18:09As long as there are crooks to be caught, the Blue Beetle will never die
18:12Oh, now
18:13We'll see if he can stand up against this
18:16Never fazed him
18:18Now, Drogon
18:19See if you can stand up against this
18:21And this
18:22Don't drive him, boys
18:23Hit him on the head
18:24Come on, Bugsy
18:24Let's drive out of here
18:25I ain't fighting
18:26Don't go straight
18:27All right, boys
18:28Raise your hands for the teacher
18:30The cop
18:31Hello, Officer Mannequin
18:32Just in time to arrest the jewel thieves of Channel Island
18:36Well, I'll be
18:37If it ain't the Blue Beetle
18:39Or his ghost
18:40Well, get your hands up and I'll slip the handcuffs on them
18:43Sorry, Mannequin
18:44But you can't handcuff a ghost
18:46Besides, the Blue Beetle has other work to do
