The UN has selected 40 experts to serve on its first independent AI panel, with nominees including Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Ressa and Canadian AI pioneer Yoshua Bengio.

00:00The United Nations has selected 40 experts to serve on its first international scientific panel on artificial intelligence.
00:09UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says he has submitted the list of nominees to the General Assembly for consideration.
00:17Among those chosen are Filipino journalist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Ressa and Canadian AI pioneer Yosha Bengio.
00:24It will be the first global, fully independent scientific body dedicated to helping close the AI knowledge gap and assess the real impacts of AI across economies and societies.
00:41And this could not be more urgent. AI is moving at the speed of light and no country can see the full picture alone.
00:49The panel was first established by the General Assembly in August 2025.
00:54It is designed to mirror the role of the UN's Climate Change Panel by providing independent evidence-based assessments on the global risks and impacts of artificial intelligence.
01:05Proposed members bring expertise across a wide range of fields, including machine learning, cybersecurity, data governance, public health, human rights and child development.
