00:20In a joint letter, Security Council President Michael Imran Kanu
00:24and General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock
00:27said the position demands exceptional efficiency, competence and integrity,
00:32as well as a clear commitment to the principles of the UN Charter.
00:36They also noted that no woman has ever held the post
00:39and encouraged member states to put forward female candidates.
00:43Early names circulating include former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet,
00:47International Atomic Energy Agency Chief Rafael Grossi
00:50and UN Conference on Trade and Development Secretary-General Rebecca Greenspan.
00:55The Security Council is expected to begin formal deliberations before the end of July,
01:00with the five permanent members deciding which candidates progress.
01:04Once the Council puts forward its recommendation,
01:07the General Assembly will elect the next Secretary-General
01:09for a five-year term starting on January 1, 2027,
