00:04:19This program is the first of its kind from Afropunk
00:04:21Bringing you performances, conversations, culture, and engagements
00:04:26As we dive into all things Afro-Latin and Afro-Caribbean
00:04:29Especially our music
00:04:30Our most beloved sounds can be traced back to our African roots, of course
00:04:33From samba to rumba and yes, reggaeton
00:04:37Our musical traditions are poppin' because the motherland is poppin'
00:04:40Duh!
00:04:41And what better place to explore this convergence of culture than right here in Miami
00:04:46This is quite literally the country's epicenter of Latin and Caribbean culture
00:04:50Everything from food and music to art and community
00:04:53All comes together right here
00:04:55Now it's not by chance that Miami is the Caribbean Afro-Latin cultural mecca that it is today
00:04:59Black residents originally lived outside of Miami's city limits
00:05:02However, over time, more Black migrants settled in Miami
00:05:05As well as immigrants from the Bahamas, Cuba, Haiti, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, and other Caribbean countries
00:05:13They all shared a common thread of being descendants of Africa by way of colonization
00:05:17Although all culturally distinct, they were bonded by one shared racial identity
00:05:22Through skill and culture, they were able to create the unique cultural landscape of Miami
00:05:26My Dominicana sister, Melanie Louisa Marte, Afro-Latino writer, award-winning poet, and self-professed nap queen
00:05:34Is blessing us with her words as we continue our journey through the Black diaspora
00:05:38Plantains, like most sacred things, do not know borders
00:05:43They know earth like they know survival
00:05:46They know how to split themselves in ten
00:05:49How to ramshack, pillage, morph into something a white devil can't kill
00:05:54In the beginning, there was light and love and land
00:05:58And no one had to die to come home
00:06:00But America loves to make a bloody crucifix out of me
00:06:04Tells me my American penance is my black body riddled in bullets
00:06:09Tells me this is the price I must pay for my own freedom
00:06:13Still, I shake off the devil by twerking when I feel tense
00:06:18On Sundays, I nap as if it were blasphemy to refuse the sway of answers
00:06:23How, you ask? By making life a ritual, my body a reclamation

00:08:09Growing up over time
00:08:11Over time was a mecca of creative, industrious, hard-working people
00:08:18And it was a segregated neighborhood
00:08:21But to us, it was our home
00:08:25So it didn't make much difference
00:08:27People say, hey, segregation
00:08:29Hey, what is that?
00:08:30You know, you get on the back of the bus
00:08:32Well, the back of the bus belonged to us
00:08:34And growing up over time was like music, music, music
00:08:39You have people on the street playing the Kong
00:08:42And you have somebody dancing
00:08:44And the tambourine
00:08:46And all kinds of instruments that they don't use now
00:08:49We used any musician we could get if they were good
00:08:53I ended up with an all-white band
00:08:56And I was like, oh my God
00:08:58It was like new to me
00:09:00Because I'm surrounded by chocolate people all the time
00:09:04But every musician in Miami
00:09:07Latinos, Bahamians, Jamaicans
00:09:13If they could play
00:09:15And they would recognize us and want to play
00:09:18They were on our sessions
00:09:20So our recording bands at Deep City
00:09:27Was basically Islanders from Bahamas and Jamaica
00:09:33And when I went to TK and started producing at TK Productions
00:09:38That's when I started playing with the Latino musicians
00:09:43Across the board
00:09:45It was a challenging thing to try to get a hit record
00:09:48It was very, very competitive
00:09:51And Motown, Motown was like
00:09:54Motown really inspired us
00:09:57That music out of Motown
00:10:00Lifted the spirit of black people
00:10:05Just gave us an inspiration
00:10:08And a real sensation
00:10:10Or we gonna make it

00:16:30Hip-hop would not exist without Jamaica
00:16:33Cause hip-hop is like the little cousin of reggae and dance
00:16:37From Calypso and Soca in Trinidad in the 1940s
00:16:42From the reggae in Jamaica in the 1960s
00:16:45To the evolution of reggae to reggaeton in Panama
00:16:48From the 1980s to the late 1990s
00:16:51The melting pot of Afro-Caribbean migrants and rhythms in New York in the 1990s
00:16:56The ever-evolving Dominican dembow and perreo of Puerto Rico
00:17:01This music is synonymous with negritude
00:17:04Joy, economy, and celebration of liberation
00:17:09In our culture, the reggaeton and the reggae in Spanish
00:17:14Without the Jamaicans, without that culture
00:17:18That wouldn't exist, you know
00:17:19And it's crazy how this little island has influenced the whole world
00:17:24In the 1970s, Black Americans, Afro-Caribbeans, and Puerto Ricans developed hip-hop
00:17:32Evolving from the struggles and hardships experienced by the South Bronx's low economic and social conditions
00:17:39The genre would eventually spark waves of consciousness that transcended their regional origins
00:17:44Molding such Black Latin rappers like La Sista, Vaquero, Tego Calderon, Chocube Town, Los Racas, and more
00:17:54This movement will not be here without the innovation and contribution of pioneers like
00:18:00The Wailers in Jamaica, Cuatro Potencias in Panama, DJ Boyo in Dominican Republic, and The Noise in Puerto Rico and their successors
00:18:14Patwa, a language created by descendants of enslaved people to limit the understanding of their white oppressors
00:18:28Patwa is not to be deduced to mere broken English
00:18:31Because what is more powerful than a language you created to free yourself?
00:18:36And that's what this music is
00:18:44For Dominicanos, mango is a staple dish that they're proud of
00:18:59If you're a fellow boricua, nothing can compare to mofongo
00:19:02And in Cuba, quimbombo is where it's at
00:19:05What do all these things have in common?
00:19:07I'm sure you have an idea
00:19:08All these foods that take us back home also connect us to our historical ties to Africa
00:19:12They are truly the flavor of our roots

00:19:31We're in Overtown, which is a historically black neighborhood here in Miami
