00:00:19And I'm here with half of Masisi.
00:00:21I have Akaya here and Ashley Venom,
00:00:23who happens to be Haitian-American, so it's a very fitting background.
00:00:26So, Akaya, Masisi.
00:00:29Yes.
00:00:30What does it mean, literally, and what does it mean for you guys?
00:00:33Why did you name yourselves that? I would love to hear that.
00:00:36So, Masisi is Haitian Creole for faggot.
00:00:39So it was honestly our political act in reclaiming something that has brought a lot of harm to our community
00:00:46and taking a spin on it and making it something to be proud of.
00:00:49One of the reasons why we came together was because we were a bunch of queer Caribbean people
00:00:54who were like, there aren't any spaces for us where we feel safe,
00:00:57we feel that we're reclaiming our own joy and not doing it for the sake of entertaining people
00:01:03or for the sake of being props.
00:01:05And so, Akaya actually came with the idea of the party
00:01:09and picked a few of us from Fem Power to come together and make it together.
00:01:13I know that trans lives and trans identities and trans existence is a big part of what Masisi does.
00:01:19Or Masisi, or Masisi, got you.
00:01:21So, how does Masisi prioritize highlighting trans issues?
00:01:30And what are you doing around that here in your organization?
00:01:34So, for us, one of our members is actually a trans woman.
00:01:39Okay.
00:01:40So, we are trying our best to make sure that there's at least some type of trans, just leadership in general.
00:01:48Because I think, like, I can only speak from being a cis, queer, black man.
00:01:52And I have a completely different experience.
00:01:54But what I can do is use my privilege as someone to be able to speak for them when they're not in the room.
00:02:00Right.
00:02:01So, that's what we want to share with the world.
00:02:03That everyone has a stake within trans, especially if you are talking about black liberation.
00:02:09You cannot talk about freeing black people if you are excluding black trans people and black queer people.
00:02:15Of course.
00:02:16Of course.
00:02:17So, specifically, at least from my point of view, it seems like in the Caribbean,
00:02:21it's just like there's this very anti, and it's so embedded in the culture.
00:02:26Is that something that you guys talk about as being part of the Caribbean diaspora?
00:02:32Is that something that's like, you know, educating parents, grandparents?
00:02:36I mean, I know that can be very difficult.
00:02:37It can be a huge challenge.
00:02:38It's a generational thing.
00:02:39But do you all do work around that?
00:02:41Are those topics of conversations that you have?
00:02:43I have a trans sister.
00:02:45I'm queer in myself.
00:02:47So, I think having those conversations with my family and always constantly trying to make space for us in general to feel at home with our home.
00:02:55Do you have those conversations at home?
00:02:56Yeah.
00:02:57Oh, I have to.
00:02:58If I'm trying to still keep a relationship with my family, that is the biggest part of that.
00:03:02Personally, I don't have those conversations.
00:03:04I feel like my own sexual orientation is my own business.
00:03:08None of your damn business.
00:03:09So, it's like, what my mom doesn't know, like, isn't going to hurt her.
00:03:12Hi, mom!
00:03:13So, personally, like, you know, I don't have those conversations at home.
00:03:17But if I'm in a setting with other people who are being homophobic, transphobic, whatever the case may be, then for sure it's definitely those conversations.
00:03:24Shut it down.
00:03:25Yeah.
00:03:26I will say that even within the name MA-CC, MA stands for masculine. CC stands for feminine.
00:03:31So, it's literally the transition of a masculine to feminine.
00:03:35Wow.
00:03:36So, the root of the word, which actually is a, you said, is a derogatory.
00:03:39Yes.
00:03:40A derogatory term that.
00:03:41Oh, okay.
00:03:42That was our aim at reclaiming.
00:03:44Just look how black people, we did it with the word nigger.
00:03:47We're reclaiming something that has ruined us, that has, like, killed off our people.
00:03:52And turning it into some, and this will happen to be a sexy word, too.
00:03:55It is!
00:03:56Like, when I said it, I was like, oh my god, I can't believe I'm saying that.
00:03:58I'm sorry.
00:03:59But it's a dope, it's a dope name.
00:04:00I really like it.
00:04:01Is there anything you want the people out there to know that may never even make it to Miami,
00:04:06that are watching in a whole other country?
00:04:09What do you want them to know about the queer community, the queer black community in Miami as we close this thing out?
00:04:15We are making space for everyone within our community that is black, not just black cis people, not just black straight people.
00:04:24If you are a black person trying to thrive in a world under white supremacy, there is space here for you here at MaCC.

00:05:06We are having a conversation about cultural identity.
00:05:10And there are some amazing voices and human beings here who are joining me.
00:05:15And we're going to get this conversation started.
00:05:18So, you know what?
00:05:19Let's just start it off with how do you identify and why?
00:05:24And I'm going to start with you, Jess.
00:05:26Absolutely.
00:05:27So, probably over like the last year, 18 months, I've been real intentional about saying I'm a black Dominican American.
00:05:35Because those three things for me are important and really shape my lived experience.
00:05:39I am a black woman, first and foremost.
00:05:41You know, having roots in Latin America, being of parents who are Dominican, that's super important to me.
00:05:45We're hella proud.
00:05:46But also the American factor is important, too, because I grew up here, right?
00:05:50So, there are cultural differences in how I grew up and who I was exposed to and food I ate and music I listened to that my folks back on the island haven't had.
00:05:59It's just very different.
00:06:00So, for me, it's important to be very clear on that.
00:06:03As you said as well, I do identify as black only because I'm my parents' first born American child.
00:06:08So, that's very important to me to identify as a black woman.
00:06:11Outwardly, obviously, I'm a black woman.
00:06:14When it comes to cultural identity, I see myself fitting in where it makes sense.
00:06:20Do I outwardly go out and say I'm XYZ? No.
00:06:22If it comes out in conversation, of course.
00:06:24But when it comes to like my family and my culture as a parent.
00:06:26Outwardly, I definitely identify as a black woman.
00:06:29I will.
00:06:30But if you're going to ask further, I have more to tell.
00:06:33I mean, my identity or the way that I identify myself has evolved throughout the years.
00:06:38At some point, I was, you know, when I was in New York and growing up in the Bronx, since I was eight years old, I was Dominican.
00:06:46There was nothing else to tell.
00:06:47I was Dominican.
00:06:48That's the way that I was seen, racialized, whatever that conversation looked like.
00:06:53Through college, I ended up doing more research and focusing my thesis on Afro-Latinidad
00:06:59and Afro-Latinidad and Afro-Latinidad, feminist theory.
00:07:02So I started identifying as Afro-Latina.
00:07:04In the past, perhaps, two years, since moving to LA, actually, I started identifying as a black Dominican.
00:07:12As an Afro-Caribeña, a black Caribeña, a black woman, a black Dominican woman, whatever it looks like.
00:07:17So for myself, I identify as Afro-Salvadoreña, Afro-Descendiente.
00:07:22And ever since I think for myself, since I was little, I've always been asked if, oh, pero, you're Puerto Rican.
00:07:31Oh, you're Cuban.
00:07:32Oh, you know.
00:07:33So it was a little bit of like, no, I'm Salvadoreña because both of my parents are that.
00:07:39So it wasn't until now in my 40s that I actually learned my roots by seeing this one article that said Afro-Salvadorian.
00:07:49And I was thinking, well, wait a minute.
00:07:51Wait, what?
00:07:52My parents never spoke to me about that because I've been told we're indigenous.
00:07:55Like, that's what we are.
00:07:57Mom's side has, you know, Spaniard, but that's what we are.
00:08:00And so when I found out that in 1821, in the Pueblo de San Miguel, Departamento, which is where both my mom and dad are from, 95% of the population was of Afro-Descendants.
00:08:12I was like, oh, que la pues.
00:08:15You know, but it's like, it's evident in our food.
00:08:18It's evident in our music.
00:08:20Cumbia, que la marimba, que la sopa de pata.
00:08:23I mean, it's there.
00:08:25But people still want to have that denial.
00:08:27And yet there's a lot of people that look like me and are of darker skin, too.
00:08:31But yet there's, no hay negro en El Salvador.
00:08:34That's literally what we hear all the time.
00:08:45Jamaican Haitian visual artist and musician from Miami, Art Love Trap.
00:08:52I'm Art Love Trap.
00:08:54I'm a visual artist and musician from South Florida, Miami to be exact.
00:08:58And I do art for therapy.
00:09:00But, you know, I've been doing it more professional lately.
00:09:04Being Jamaican and Haitian is fun because, you know, the whole world knows of you but doesn't really know about you that much.
00:09:15The two nationalities get confused pretty often.
00:09:19I think it's hilarious.
00:09:20Art in Haiti is ridiculous, man.
00:09:22They, they, that's the first time that I've seen a mural get done just for the culture of a mural getting done.
00:09:30It wasn't for clout.
00:09:32It wasn't for money.
00:09:33It was just literally to make the city pop and be beautiful and expressive and give people reason to go to work and not feel like they're not doing something they aren't supposed to be doing.
00:09:44It makes the place more comfortable, more fun.
00:09:48I knew art was my thing when I was surrounded by artists and didn't even understand how I got there.
00:09:53I cannot paint without music.
00:09:55Painters or visual artists and musicians go hand in hand because if you look at like older music from Marvin Gaye to Beatles to stylistics, everybody had those album covers that were like literally art pieces.
00:10:11They, no, there wasn't just a photo or some Photoshop.
00:10:15Somebody took the time out to tell a story that would reflect this piece, a body of work.
00:10:20And it go hand in hand, man.
00:10:21Like art has definitely helped me evaluate and really address the traumas that I've had.
00:10:27There's times I write a song and I talk about something I've never talked about out loud.
00:10:32So I hear it back and I said, damn, I really said that on whack for people to hear.
00:10:36With tragedy comes really good art.
00:10:38So a lot of times when things are going left in my life, I get, I get pretty pissed off about it because everything feels like it's out of whack, offset and balanced.
00:10:48But every time it happens, I make something unbelievable.
00:10:52Art Love Trap.
00:10:55I thought the name was cool at first.
00:10:59But as I kind of looked into it, I realized that my name really does reflect the things in my life that matter to me, that I need constant reminder of.
00:11:13I need constant reminder that art is the dominant portion of my life.
00:11:17I need a constant reminder that love is the mediator of everything that I'm involved in.
00:11:23And I cannot ignore the fact that this life, being a black man feels like a trap.
00:11:29Once upon a time, in a far away land, it's a story of a block that was disappearing.
00:11:39We had to assert our dignity in small ways.

00:37:39I know who I am. Do you?
00:37:41Inside the ring, I couldn't hide fear. I had to embrace it.
00:37:51I was scared of being nobody.
00:37:55It allowed me to see who I am.
00:38:00In the ring, you can't be fake.
00:38:06Being in the ring brought back what my grandfather once told me.
00:38:11I was going to be someone.
00:38:19So I had to win.
00:38:20It's important to look back and reflect just because you can see where you started and where you're at so you could appreciate.
00:38:38I never really appreciated all that I had just because I just expected it.
00:38:44But then where I came from to where I am now, I'm out of the, not even the ghetto, I'm out of the slums.
00:38:53Growing up in the Dominican Republic was very difficult because being black felt like it was a crime.
00:39:00I started working bare feet out in the sugar cane field, working with my grandfather when I was five years old.
00:39:07It was a crime being Haitian because you were not permitted to be in the Dominican Republic because they automatically assumed that you didn't have your papers.
00:39:18People know that you're Haitian because you're dark.
00:39:20Coming from the Dominican Republic to America, I thought that it was going to be easier to identify myself.
00:39:33It just got worse.
00:39:34My grandfather gave me a sense of value that I'm more than what people see.
00:39:45I'm more than a color.
00:39:49I'm more than being Haitian.
00:39:51I'm more than being Dominican.
00:39:53I'm more than being African American.
00:39:55I'm more than, you know, I'm God made, you know.
00:39:59So he instilled that in me.
00:40:01He instilled in me that I'm better.
00:40:04When you saw the ring, it broke a lot of different labels just because either you're good or you're bad.
00:40:10Either you're a showman or you're not.
00:40:12And I was good and I was a showman.
00:40:16People forgot all about my skin, forgot all about my actions or whatever.
00:40:24They just saw me perform.
00:40:28I lost my first world title fight and my grandfather died.
00:40:34Those two losses cut me down to my roots.
00:40:39Who am I?
00:40:40Who am I when I don't win?
00:40:41I thought that I was going to go to Haiti one day with my grandfather.
00:40:45But once when he passed, I had to travel that journey with my father.
00:40:49Being home on the beach, it felt like I had no borders.
00:40:54I started to know that my grandparents, my fathers, I came from presidents and this and that.
00:41:00I had so much land.
00:41:01I started to appreciate of the person that I was trying to run from.
00:41:06Being a winner to me is not your do, it's your who, who you are.
00:41:11You know, it's not what you do.
00:41:13Music has always had the ability to transcend cultural barriers.
00:41:41We're all connected by invisible tethers that we can use to transfer energy, power, love, and healing.
00:41:50In Afrocentric cultures, music is more of a way of life.
00:41:53It's something everyone can participate in actively or passively.
00:41:57It's part of the gravity of their community.
00:41:59It's time for all that's around us.

00:42:24This new album is about my own personal growth over the last few years.
00:42:32Learning to love myself and facing challenges in the form of personal relationships and getting older in general.
00:42:40The human experience is unique and special for every individual, but we're able to relate to one another through shared experiences.
00:42:48One of my goals as an artist is to create a space where people can be connected to one another through those shared experiences
00:42:55and find freedom and a sense of community in spite of whatever box society tries to put them in.
00:43:02Panamanian icons created reggae in Spanish, an emphasis of the expression of their dignity.
00:43:10These Afro-Antillian Panamanians, or chombos, as they were named in insult and reclaimed as a source of pride,
00:43:17were the only Latinos able to translate the political essences evident in Jamaican potwa.
00:43:23The word chombo, growing up, it was more like a turn of a tear, man.
00:43:28Chomba, woo-woo-woo.
00:43:30You call people like my skin color chombo, you know what I mean?
00:43:33That's what the Spaniards used to call us.
00:43:35We took the word and reclaimed it.
00:43:39Afro-Buricua Spanish has the source of Taino and African roots.
00:43:43And these same diasporic roots exist in culturally specific jargon, palabreo, street code, slang, and dialect in the Dominican Republic.
00:43:53Dominican vernacular is often highlighted and celebrated in Dominican Dembeau.
00:43:58The terms and usage have been historically discriminated against in the music industry internationally,
00:44:05beating artists of El Movimiento to water down their lyrics to make a commercial.
00:44:09But the underground Dembeau movement is keeping La Jerga en Código alive.
00:44:15Oye, nosotros somos universales, ya.
00:44:17Ponganse claro.
00:44:19True life.
00:44:19Spawned from ancestral movements, the dance, el baile, exists at the core of El Movimiento,
00:44:28a central part of the culture and essential to its survival.
00:44:32Los pies, or footwork, twerk, or perreo, meneando la cintura, or winding the waist,
00:44:40were a combination of all three, are ancestral.
00:44:44And as was its intention, the traditions have been kept alive.
00:44:53Reggaeton is not dead.
00:44:55Because perreo is its lifeline.
00:44:59Ancestral and black at its center.
00:45:01Black is always the new black.
00:45:04And because of this, it's important to remember, all perreo is reggaeton.
00:45:11But all reggaeton isn't perreo.
00:45:13Africa gave birth to an array of sounds created so that we may forever stay in tune with our ancestry,
00:45:21to bask in the beauty that is our collective creations, and to celebrate our existence.
00:45:28Reggaeton, dembow, hip-hop, and their sister genres, as they dominate globally,
00:45:37it's necessary to understand the root, evolution, and parallels of these diasporic, transnational genres.
00:45:47It's black, it's survival, it's resistance, it's liberation, it's one singular movement.
00:45:57Windaways for liberation.
00:45:59Everybody sitting here has had some pushback from somebody, right?
00:46:26Because when you talk about blackness within the Latino spectrum, American black people are saying,
00:46:33y'all not like us.
00:46:34You are non-foundational black people.
00:46:36So tell me, Christina, have you had any experiences with that?
00:46:41And let's have a conversation about that.
00:46:45Absolutely.
00:46:45I feel, honestly, it stems a lot in the black American community where they feel like I didn't fit in.
00:46:51Because I didn't go through the traditional black American experiences.
00:46:54I think a lot of the, I guess like a little bit of an identity crisis, where I just like,
00:46:59I felt like I didn't fit in, but I loved the part.
00:47:01So it's kind of just like I'm a poser.
00:47:03So it took a little bit to kind of just like tap into what exactly, you know, a black woman is.
00:47:08Now that I'm 28, I totally understand what that is.
00:47:10And it doesn't have anything to do with where I fit in, where I don't.
00:47:14It's more so like what I experience and what I identify as and what I can contribute to the black community.
00:47:18At some point, I felt very insecure about even calling myself a black woman, right?
00:47:23Because it felt like I was taking away from like darker skinned black women who like have
00:47:29definitely been racialized in a completely different way than I have, especially like
00:47:33black Dominican women.
00:47:34So I think now I feel more comfortable in where I identify and I can push back now because
00:47:40now I got receipts.
00:47:41It even goes as far as region.
00:47:47Like I grew up in Virginia.
00:47:48I'm born and raised in Virginia.
00:47:50So where I was born and raised in Virginia, you were either black, white, or you were Filipino.
00:47:56That was it.
00:47:56That was all you had to offer.
00:47:58So like I kind of, you know, let me just get in with the black folks.
00:48:01Let me just fit in right here.
00:48:03Yeah.
00:48:03And as children?
00:48:04Are you really black?
00:48:05Like, you know, I'm just kind of like you get that pushback depending on what region you're
00:48:09from versus if I grew up in New York, it wouldn't be a problem.
00:48:12Growing up, as I mentioned, you know, I didn't really identify anything else but salvadoreña
00:48:16because especially in El Salvador, like they will see me and they'll be like, oh, la morena.
00:48:22Oh, la trigueña.
00:48:24Trigueña is what, all the time, trigueña.
00:48:26So, but here it's like I was seen as salvadoreña.
00:48:30So for me, it wasn't the pushback until now.
00:48:33And my upbringing, my mom, she's the youngest of her siblings.
00:48:36She came here when she was 17, you know, speaks English, all the things.
00:48:41And my dad who raised me was a black American man.
00:48:45So growing up in my household, my mom never said we're black, but I grew up with black
00:48:49culture, right?
00:48:50So I never, and also I didn't have a lot of Dominican friends growing up.
00:48:54My Dominican friends were my cousins.
00:48:56I gravitated more towards my Puerto Rican and my black friends.
00:48:59Also growing up in the Bronx, depending on where you live, you know, that's what's around
00:49:02you, right?
00:49:02I wasn't, that's the other thing too.
00:49:04I'm not like the typical Dominican who grew up in the Heights.
00:49:06Like that, that was not my lived experience.
00:49:08I would go see my cousins maybe, but like I lived in the Bronx.
00:49:11So for me, the biggest pushback here is always Latinos.
00:49:15Oh, you speak Spanish so well.
00:49:17Yeah.
00:49:17Cause I know how to speak it.
00:49:18Like, why would I, why would I not speak it well?
00:49:20You don't say that when I speak English because you see me and you see my hair, you see how
00:49:25I like, how I feel like all the things.
00:49:27Cause it's like, Oh, you automatically assume.

01:05:11make this, but I was missing a lot of the produce that I needed. So back home, got
01:05:16everything I need and let's get started on this meal.
01:05:21First things first. Caribbeans clean their meat. I just use regular distilled vinegar.
01:05:26It's very common here to use limes and lemons. I put salt down and that
01:05:32prevents the garlic from flying all over the place. I used about 10 garlic cloves.
01:05:51It's cool to drop it to medium high. You don't want these to burn or go round. These are supposed to be golden.
