00:00Like my family, my culture is apparent. Outwardly, I definitely identify as a black woman. I will. But if you're going to ask further, I have more to tell.
00:08I mean, my identity or the way that I identify myself has evolved throughout the years.
00:13At some point, I was, you know, when I was in when I was in New York and growing up in the Bronx, since I was eight years old, I was Dominican.
00:21There was nothing else to tell. I was Dominican. That's the way that I was seen, racialized, whatever that my that my that conversation looked like.
00:27Through college, I ended up doing more research and focusing my thesis on Afro-Latinidad and Afro-Latinidad feminist theory.
00:37So I started identifying as Afro-Latina in the past, perhaps two years since moving to L.A. actually.
00:45I started identifying as a black Dominican, as an Afro-Caribeña, a black Caribeña, a black woman, a black Dominican woman, whatever that looks like.
00:52So for myself, I identify as Afro-Salvadoreña, Afro-Descendiente.
00:58And ever since I think for myself, since I was little, I've always been asked if, oh, pero you're Puerto Rican.
01:07Oh, you're Cuban. Oh, you know.
01:09So it was a little bit of like, no, I'm Salvadoreña because both of my parents are that.
01:14So it wasn't until now in my 40s that I actually learned my roots by seeing this one article that said Afro-Salvadorian.
01:24And I was thinking, well, wait a minute. Wait, what?
01:27My parents never spoke to me about that because I've been told we're indigenous.
01:31Like, that's what we are. Mom's side has, you know, Spaniard, but that's what we are.
01:35And so when I found out that in 1821, in the Pueblo de San Miguel, Departamento, which is where both my mom and dad are from, 95% of the population was of Afro-Descendants, I was like, oh, que la pues.
01:51You know, but it's like, it's evident in our food. It's evident in our music.
01:55Cumbia, que la marimba, que la sopa de pata. I mean, it's, it's there.
02:00The world knows of you, but doesn't really know about you that much.
02:05The two nationalities get confused pretty often. I think it's hilarious.
02:09Art in Haiti is ridiculous, man. They, they, that's the first time that I've seen a mural get done just for the culture of a mural getting done.
02:20It wasn't for clout. It wasn't for money. It was just literally to make the city pop and be beautiful and expressive.
02:28It's supposed to be doing. It's, it makes the place more comfortable, more fun.
02:33I knew art was my thing when I was surrounded by artists and didn't even understand how I got there.
02:38I cannot paint without music. Painters or visual artists and musicians go hand in hand because if you look at like older music from Marvin Gaye to Beatles to stylistics,
02:51everybody had those album covers that were like literally art pieces.
02:56They didn't know there wasn't just a photo or some Photoshop.
03:00Somebody took the time out to tell a story that would reflect this piece, a body of work.
03:04And it go hand in hand, man. Like art has definitely helped me evaluate and really address the traumas that I've had.
03:11There's times I write a song and I talk about something I've never talked about out loud until I hear it back.
03:18And I said, damn, I really said that on whack for people to hear.
03:20With tragedy comes really good art. So a lot of times where things are going left in my life, I get,
03:26I get pretty pissed off about it because everything feels like it's out of whack, offset, and balanced.
03:32But every time it happens, I make something unbelievable.
03:37Art Love Trap.
03:40I thought the name was cool at first, but as I kind of looked into it, I realized that my name really does reflect the things in my life that matter to me.
03:54That I need constant reminder of.
03:57I need constant reminder that art is the dominant portion of my life.
04:02I need a constant reminder that love is the mediator of everything that I'm involved in.
04:08And I cannot ignore the fact that this life, being a black man, feels like a trap.
04:16Once upon a time, in a faraway land, it's a story of a block that was disappearing.
04:24We had to assert our dignity in small ways.
04:28Hey, y'all. Good morning.

15:50Alright, the songs for our brothers and sisters die every day in all the time on the streets, victims of violence, racism and oppression. Thank you so much Afropunk, obrigado, gracias Black Pantera do Brasil.
16:07And though it may have cost the weight of my body and bones
16:13And though the summer drowned me in patches of thick sap and sweat
16:18And though I had to teach my hips how to surfboard anxiety to dust
16:23And though waltzing to the temple of mangoes falling on tin roofs is shaky
16:28And though I have never properly played a guida
16:32Spoke the origin's tongue
16:34Wept at their altar or shook a Mufasa into song
16:38And if all I have is these goosebumps, smoke signals, and butterflies whispering bright green nothings of life as joy at the crown of my temple
16:47And if freedom never comes
16:49I settle in to rest as my sweet revenge
16:52My hallelujah
