A medical laboratory officer has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and arson charges following an attack on his former girlfriend in Kajang last month.

S. Parthiban, 43, appeared at the Sessions Court on Thursday (Feb 5) facing serious charges stemming from an incident on Jan 30.

00:00A medical laboratory officer has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and arson charges
00:05following an attack on his former girlfriend in Kajang last month.
00:1043-year-old S. Parthiban appeared at the session's court on Thursday
00:14facing serious charges stemming from an incident on January 30.
00:19Prosecutors allege that at around 3.20pm that day,
00:23Parthiban poured petrol over his 43-year-old former partner
00:27at her residence in Bandar Technology, Kajang,
00:31an act that could have caused her death.
00:34He was charged under Section 307 of the Penal Code,
00:38which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years' imprisonment and a fine.
00:42Parthiban also faced a second charge for allegedly setting fire to the woman's vehicle using petrol.
00:49That charge carries up to 14 years' jail and a fine.
00:52The prosecution opposed bail, noting attempted murder is a non-bailable offence.
00:58However, Parthiban, who was unrepresented, requested leniency,
01:03saying he was the sole guardian of his nine-year-old daughter from a previous marriage.
01:08Judge Kainor Aliza Ismail granted bail at RM16,000 for both charges,
01:13with conditions including passport surrender and monthly police reporting.
01:18The case will be mentioned again on April 10.
