00:00I think I've been just sitting at the status quo with my hair for a couple of
00:04years now and so I'm so scared. As long as it doesn't look you know like 90s style
00:10stripes. Hi I'm Leah and I am here today to just do something different with my
00:15hair. My current hairstyle is what happens to your hair when you just
00:20completely stop doing any kind of self-care or caring about your
00:25appearance. I had a baby six months ago and when I was pregnant I just didn't
00:29really do anything with it. Today what I'm hoping to do is do something that will
00:34allow me to potentially grow out my grays in a more kind of graceful manner. I
00:40have been dying my grays since I was about 25. My dad went gray very very young
00:46and women were always like, wait your dad's such a silver fox. Why can't I be a
00:51silver fox too? That might be down the road but today I'd hope to do something
00:54that would just like prep me for that transformation.
01:01So what are we doing today? Originally what I thought I might want to do is like
01:05a dye it silver like a silver ombre that then I could just like perfectly and
01:10naturally turn into my own grays but I think that with all of the dye and
01:14everything that might be hard. I would say so knowing that you have this brown
01:18color on your hair. We're gonna have some trouble getting your hair to a true gray
01:22tone that'll match your grays. What I'm thinking will do is something pretty
01:26reminiscent of a full highlight say. As long as it doesn't look you know like
01:3190s style stripes. So very natural but to the roots so that as your grays are
01:36growing and next to them they're already back-to-back. Living in a lighter world
01:41that's even somewhat close to gray hair that's gonna help diffuse the gray much
01:45more than what you're living with right now. Mesh as it grows. Definitely you can
01:56follow me I have to finally accept that my hair is probably now more gray than it
02:01is brown. I'd love to do something with color that would allow me to not have like
02:06a super clear line of demarcation and maybe give me a little bit of space in
02:11between having to get it colored every three weeks now. So it's become really hard
02:16to keep up with just having a baby but also like it's really expensive and box
02:22dye actually does not work despite what people will tell you. Let's embrace the
02:28warmth you won't be dying your hair with this color so we can break through that
02:33over time getting you lighter and ashier much closer to what the grays reflect.
02:50Hi Leah. I'm Peter. Nice to meet you. Nice to meet you. So let's talk about your haircut. I have
02:55been asked if I'm wearing a wig. I will say that people always say it's a very beautiful wig.
03:00Yeah. I want something easy that I can take care of. With the baby I'm like
03:04running out of the house in the morning. So let's kind of go in there and just
03:07kind of soften up all that heaviness so that it has a little bit more movement to
03:11it and shows off more of the texture. I'm gonna flat iron through it just to give
03:15it a nice smooth shape and then we can really take a look at the length and the
03:19density.
03:24I have cut and dyed my hair so many times. I've had really really short pixies. I
03:30was a kid in the 90s so I had like manic panic. I'm excited to finally make it look
03:35nice again. I really want to do something that is a little less upkeep just to keep
03:41it at like the bare minimum of acceptable.
03:56It's gonna take out a little bit more density.
03:58Yeah, it's good.
04:12All right. Are you ready to see your new hair?
04:15Yes.
04:18I love it. I've always wanted this haircut my whole life.
04:28I can't wait to come back again and do the second step and the third step and then
04:32one day I'll have all gray hair.
04:38Welcome back. First step's gonna be the extractor. It's not bleach at all.
04:43Okay. It's a very safe process. All it does is go through and unlock the color
04:47molecules so that they can actually be pushed out of the hair.
04:50Cool.
04:51I like the warm of course but today we're gonna shoot for a cool gray finish.
04:56I'm excited.
04:56Yeah, me too.
05:05Jake invented a way to go gray gracefully. I've fallen down hours long researching
05:11like all these like Instagram accounts and blogs of going gray gracefully and
05:16didn't know how I was gonna get there and thought that I was gonna be doing the
05:19dark brown boring dye for the rest of my life and now I feel like I'm not going to do
05:25that.
05:39Okay, so step one is done. We've gone through with the extractors. We're gonna go in now
05:44with a lot of highlights to achieve the gray effect and in between those we'll be canceling
05:50out any red that we're still seeing.
05:51How long do you think that will take?
05:54Hours.
06:00The process of going gray, especially when you start going gray like I did in your early
06:0520s, it just is like years of sort of figuring out how you're going to keep it from getting
06:11there and so to have this just feels like the real me is amazing and I love it.
06:42It's perfect. It's perfectly matched my roots. Yeah.
06:52As you continue to get more grays coming through at your roots, I say we just highlight densities
06:59like this throughout. And then I'll be a silver fox. In no time. In no time.
07:04The process of going gray doesn't have to be this crazy thing. You can just gradually
07:09go gray and it's its own kind of beauty and men don't get to own the salt and
07:14pepper and the silver foxes of the world. The women can have it too at any age that
07:19happens because it happens at all ages and I'm really excited.
07:23Go to the drill.
07:23You can see the right place.
07:24It's done.
07:24If you can see the right place.
07:25It's done.
07:25You
