We ditched sugar for 14 days. That meant no refined sugars, flours, sugar filled beverages, and NO artificial sweeteners. There were highs and lows, but mostly hanger (hungry anger). Did you do our No Sugar Challenge? How’d it go? Comment below.

00:00Hey Naturally Curly World, I'm Christina and for the next two weeks we're giving up sugar.
00:05I didn't invent this challenge.
00:07I had everyone vote on what they wanted to give up in January and no sugar won.
00:12It wasn't me.
00:13I voted for a no meat challenge because I know what my limitations are.
00:19Straight up, I'm gonna fail.
00:21Like let's just get that out of the way.
00:22I turn up so hard and my turn up includes beer.
00:28The challenge means no sugar, no sugar substitutes, so that would be like honey or agave.
00:37Look I read the guidelines and I didn't retain that.
00:41I really didn't because I was like no.
00:44No artificial sweeteners, that's like aspartame.
00:48No high glycemic fruits, so that's bananas, cherries, mangoes.
00:52I am Jamaican and Trinidadian and I can't not have mangoes.
00:59It's a perfect fruit, it's the perfect color.
01:02I'm gonna be at Fiesta in the produce section just like ma'am, ma'am are you singing as we
01:08come to the, are you singing Brian McKnight to the mangoes?
01:12It looks like sunshine and I want that in my life and in my body.
01:17We come to the end of the road, still I can't let go.
01:28No refined sugar, pastas, white breads, I think that will be the hardest thing for me.
01:36And then no soda, like juice, sweetened drinks.
01:41I'm going to try to not touch Dr. Pepper and Sprite.
01:47Those are my weaknesses.
01:48I don't even have a sweet tooth, I have a sweet mouth, like all of them are sweet teeth.
01:53My one true wish is that this will clear up my skin.
01:57That's what I will be picturing every time I reach for something that might have sugar in
02:00it.
02:01Fourteen days goes by, I don't want to see not nary a fine line, like I don't even want
02:08to see a fine perforated line on my face, like all this stress better be evaporated.
02:14I guess maybe I should take it more seriously, but I like my life the way that it is and trying
02:22to change all of that by taking away sugar, no.
02:28So we'll see, we'll see, I may be a puddle of headaches and tears and mood swings and
02:37low energy in a few days, we'll just have to see.
02:40Alright you guys, I hope you're ready for it to get weird because the HEB already knows
02:45I'm crazy.
02:46Let's do this, really like you do it and good luck.
02:51It's now after 7pm, I haven't eaten solid food since 9am this morning.
03:03I can't move, I did go to hot yoga in between and worked out really hard and now I just don't
03:10have the energy to get up and cook or go to a restaurant.
03:13So please send help!
03:16It's day 1 of the sugar-free challenge, um, quite frankly I've been losing it pretty
03:21tangibly today.
03:22I don't want this to be the thing that costs me my job.
03:25I'm sorry for the shaking, but the withdrawals have started.
03:29I am full blown starving, like, I'm about to go to the store and get a piece of meat right
03:34quick.
03:35I am having trouble concentrating.
03:39Okay.
03:40Bye.
03:41Good morning, it's day 3.
03:43I am making breakfast and I'm making enough that if I haven't figured something else out
03:49by lunch, I can eat this again.
03:51Just in case.
03:52I had a dream that I was eating pastries, but like, I dreamt that I was still on the sugar
03:59challenge so I couldn't actually eat them.
04:02Okay, so I'm at the store and I'm pretty sure I can eat this.
04:08And if I can't, then I'll just give it away.
04:11But I'm also hungry for breakfast, so I'm gonna get fruit and those are mangoes and I can't
04:18have them, so this is torture.
04:23It is day 5, day 4, oh god, I can't count.
04:31I want, I want a, I want a stroopwafel, I want a caramel stroopwafel.
04:36It's been 7 days, my skin's not getting any better.
04:42Okay, Kara just said that my skin is supposed to get worse, not better.
04:47Kara.
04:48No, worse than better.
04:49Okay guys, this is the first day of shopping on this challenge.
04:54So I'm gonna turn this around.
04:55What's that say?
04:56Brown rice noodles.
04:57Oh great, it's brown rice.
04:58I can have it.
04:59Except, when I look at the back, can you guys see that second ingredient there?
05:03Probably not.
05:04It's mirror flipped.
05:05Well, first ingredient is brown rice, second ingredient is white rice.
05:09So these brown rice noodles have white rice in them.
05:13For some reason, my guess is just to infuriate me.
05:18I just got back from the best Indian restaurant in Houston and when they asked for my order,
05:35I said, no, I don't want any naan.
05:38And I made a total fool of myself by asking if they serve brown rice instead of white, which
05:43of course they didn't.
05:44So I had to say, no, I don't want any rice with my curry.
05:48And then I proceeded to try and eat curry without rice.
05:53And it was the worst thing I've ever done.
05:57And I got so angry.
05:59I want a drink, but this is what I've got.
06:03So I've got de Sirono, which I know in all good conscience I cannot have on this challenge.
06:09I'm going to try and see what this free thing, it's called 20 grand, this free thing of vodka
06:16and rosé is like.
06:18Who am I to presume that centuries of Indian tradition got it wrong by serving white rice
06:27and naan with their curry, no thanks, no rice for meat, no.
06:32You know what I did?
06:33I ate rice.
06:34One of the many reasons why I have given up on the sugar challenge is because I order
06:39meals from Blue Apron and they also send nutritional facts.
06:45So as you can see here, there's only 13 grams of sugar in here.
06:49However, with the no sugar challenge, I can't have sugars at all.
06:52So this wouldn't have worked and I'm hungry and I paid good money for this, so.
06:58It's day 11 and what I've learned is if you have any friends left at this point, what you
07:03have to do, if you want to see them ever, is eat a pre-meal before you go to a restaurant.
07:11And then you won't be as angry when you sit there and watch them eat.
07:15You can see my fine lines here, usually you can see them from here.
07:19I think my skin might be clearing up a bit, actually.
07:23These are leftovers.
07:25Delicious pizza slices.
07:28And I'm gonna eat the crust because that's the best part.
07:32It's day 12 and I'm cooking a casserole.
07:35The casserole's gonna be delicious and it's exactly what I would be cooking even if I weren't
07:40on the challenge, but the fact that I have to be cooking it means that I hate cooking it
07:44and I resent it.
07:45I'm at the movie theater and let's go see Proud Mary, support my auntie Taraji P.
07:52I'm so super morally opposed to paying for water, but I think that's the only thing here
07:58that I can have on this challenge.
07:59I got an apple, you know, and I still haven't drank a soda, which is great, and I'm really
08:07proud of that.
08:08And I actually feel less jittery and anxious.
08:12I don't really think about the soda or anything.
08:14It's day 13, snacking on nuts.
08:19I mean, it's fine.
08:20I survived, but I'm just ready for this to be over.
08:23Somebody brought in, look at this you guys, free homemade gorditas.
08:28I probably can't have them because of the amount of sugars that are just in the spices
08:34and because I'm Texan I don't actually know what a good gordita actually is.
08:40I don't get to find out what it actually is today either.
08:44The Naturally Curly No Sugar Challenge is over!
08:49I made it through the wilderness.
08:52You know I made it through.
08:56And I am hungry.
08:58We all made it.
08:59We're alive.
09:00We didn't all make it, but we made it and we're here.
09:05You mad?
09:06I got through the sugar challenge.
09:10Really what had happened was I watched everybody else be angry for two weeks, okay?
09:16Complaining about, I'm hungry, I can't have no sugar.
09:20I knew that the hardest part of this challenge for me was going to be meal planning and making
09:23sure that I had everything ready to go every day.
09:27I can't do that.
09:28So there were a lot of times where I was just like, well, I guess I'm having unflavored
09:32yogurt for dinner.
09:33I'm grown, okay?
09:34And if I want to have sugar, I will put it in my coffee.
09:38I will put it in my tea.
09:40I will exfoliate with it.
09:43What I learned is you can't plan what you're going to eat when you get hungry.
09:50You have to shop and cook and figure all of that out way before you even get the inkling
09:59that you're hungry.
10:00I made it a full 13 days without touching this bright.
10:03This wouldn't have been nearly as bad for me as it was if I had just planned a little
10:09bit better.
10:10I have discovered a lot of foods that I might not have otherwise.
10:14Kefir, for instance, the cultured whole milk, they make an unflavored version and that stuff,
10:20okay?
10:21That stuff is good.
10:23There was a day where I felt drunk.
10:27It was like I shouldn't have been driving to work.
10:31I mean, I went to the bakery.
10:33I got macaroons.
10:34I got milk cakes.
10:36And I just wanted to say on camera and publicly that I am insensitive.
10:43This is the weirdest thing.
10:45My sweat smells different.
10:47Like, I've had...
10:48I can't calculate the body chemistry changes because I hate getting my blood drawn and
10:53my lab burned down.
10:57But...
10:57There's a lot of things burned down around you.
11:00This was a hard challenge!
11:01Ever since last night, all of my meals have been sugar-based.
11:07Pizza, cookies, fruitcake, chocolate, for breakfast.
11:11I think that this challenge is actually going to backfire and that now I'm going to eat way
11:18more sugar than I ever ate before.
11:20I can sit here and joke and all that kind of stuff about my own personal take on this,
11:25but for real, like, it's serious.
11:26If you do want to take ownership of your health and you started here with Naturally Curly,
11:32I say kudos to you, good on you, and keep it up.
11:36This challenge really put a lot of things into perspective for me, especially reading ingredients,
11:39so I want to know, how did you guys do?
11:42Did you take our challenge?
11:43Have you ever taken any sort of no-X-ingredient-here challenge before?
11:47And if so, how did it go?
11:49If you like this video, like, share, and follow us.
11:53We make these smooth, but do have a thing.
11:55So, here we go, that's it.
11:57Bye.
