00:01We're two hours northeast of Spearfish.
00:04Absolute ranch country out here.
00:06If you need it to build it, you have to bring it.
00:09Cheyenne does amazing leather work.
00:12I like that.
00:13She desperately needs an actual workspace.
00:15It should be something that's low-maintenance.
00:17Gabion building would be cool.
00:20Okay, stop, stop, stop.
00:23We've been here for the last three nights.
00:26There's 12 people on this job site.
00:28Twelve.
00:29It takes a village.
00:34It's amazing.
00:35Oh, wow.
00:36This is a ranch build, baby.
00:37Building, ranching, life.
00:41My given name is Jared Cappy.
00:44But everyone calls me Cappy.
00:46This is probably one of the coolest things I've ever done.
00:48Everyone clear?
00:49I've been a professional builder for over 15 years.
00:52Woo-hoo!
00:54But a few years ago, I teamed up with my daughter, Alex.
00:57Whoa.
00:58It looks so good in here.
01:00We specialize in transforming unconventional objects.
01:03Whoa!
01:04I'm awake now.
01:06What if we did use a plane?
01:07Wait, really?
01:08All right, Alex.
01:09It's all yours.
01:10Into one-of-a-kind creations.
01:12Oh, my God.
01:14It's so amazing.
01:16And we get to do it for our favorite people.
01:18I love you.
01:19I love you.
01:20Oh, my God.
01:21Look at that.
01:22Look at that.
01:23Look at that.
01:24Look at that.
01:25Look at that.
01:26Is we get to do it together.
01:27So, this is all ranch land.
01:28All ranch land.
01:29Farm ranch land.
01:30Okay.
01:31All of them.
01:32Thanks for coming along to introduce us to Cheyenne.
01:33You've known her and her family for a long time.
01:48Known them forever because her brother-in-law is one of my really good friends and we do a lot of projects together.
01:52Oh, cool.
01:55So, Cheyenne runs the ranch and she's a horsewoman.
01:59She's got horses.
02:00She breaks horses.
02:01She rides horses.
02:02Oh, she breaks horses.
02:03Oh, I'm not man enough to do that.
02:05But she also does amazing leather work.
02:08I like that.
02:09Cool.
02:10Right now, her leather room is literally in the attic space.
02:12Like, the attic.
02:13Like, the triangle part.
02:15It's like, when you're up there, you're like hot and she has no space for her stuff.
02:20That's not fun.
02:21She desperately needs an actual workspace and a spot maybe for her friends to come hang out with her while she's working on things.
02:28So, leather work is her hobby.
02:30Hobby.
02:31Right?
02:32Running the ranch is her job.
02:33Yup.
02:34What kind of stuff does she do?
02:35She's made some backpacks.
02:36She's made some purses.
02:37Oh, wow.
02:38Belts.
02:39I've seen some wallets she's put together.
02:40Cool.
02:41Okay.
02:42A leather working, bronc busting cowgirl.
02:47Like, uh, that gal right there.
02:49Of course it is.
02:51She's working.
02:52That's awesome.
02:53That's amazing.
02:54This place is nice.
02:55Hey, cowgirl.
02:56Hi, guys.
02:57How's it going?
02:58Great.
02:59Hey, I brought my helpers.
03:00I'm Cheyenne.
03:01Nice to meet you, Cheyenne.
03:02This is Alex.
03:03Nice to meet you.
03:04Nice to meet you.
03:05We've heard about you for years.
03:06That's nice to finally meet you in person.
03:07Yeah.
03:08What an awesome place you have.
03:09It's wonderful.
03:10I love it out here.
03:11Yeah.
03:12It was worth a two-hour drive for sure.
03:13How long has your family had this place?
03:14My great-grandparents.
03:15My great-grandparents.
03:16My great-grandparents.
03:17My great-grandparents, my great-grandparents, my great-grandparents, my great-grandparents,
03:20moved out here in the early 1900s.
03:21Oh, no kidding.
03:22It's been added on to, but this is, this is a family ranch.
03:25This house that I currently live in, my great-grandmother actually built it.
03:29Came out here and homesteaded in 1908.
03:30It's pretty neat to see everything that we've had.
03:31We've heard about you for years.
03:32We've heard about you for years.
03:33That's nice to finally meet you in person.
03:34Yeah.
03:35What an awesome place you have.
03:36It's wonderful.
03:37I love it out here.
03:38Yeah.
03:39It was worth a two-hour drive for sure.
03:40How long has your family had this place?
03:41My great-grandparents moved out here in the early 1900s.
03:43Oh, no kidding.
03:44It's been added on to, but this is, this is a family ranch.
03:46Came out here and homesteaded in 1908.
03:48It's pretty neat to see everything that, you know, my past family has built and that I
03:53get to continue to utilize it.
03:55So we know a little bit about a workshop that you have.
03:57Mm-hmm.
03:58It's pretty small, pretty tight, pretty hot.
04:01Okay.
04:02I'm hoping Cappy and Alex will build me a building big enough that I can put all of my
04:07leather machines and sewing machines and all my equipment and tools and still be able to
04:12have enough room to have friends and family over and we can all create and laugh and hang
04:17out and enjoy being around each other.
04:19Yeah.
04:20I think this is going to have to be a four-seasonal thing.
04:22Something that's going to withstand the South Dakota winters and summers.
04:25Okay.
04:26That makes sense.
04:27I was wondering if we could hear a little bit more about what the process is for you
04:31with leatherworking?
04:32Yeah.
04:33It's a really fun hobby and I really enjoy it.
04:35Okay.
04:36It's kind of my little escape after a long day.
04:38Sure.
04:39I imagine there's...
04:40All sorts of tools.
04:41Mm-hmm.
04:42Lots of sewing machines.
04:43Which requires a little space.
04:44Oh, you have sewing machines.
04:45Okay.
04:46Oh, yeah.
04:47Leather sewing machines.
04:48Those are different.
04:49Three?
04:50Three.
04:51Oh, okay.
04:52This is not only wallets and belts.
04:53This is like big kid leather stuff.
04:54Yep.
04:55I like to build for the community needs out here.
04:56You know, I've always hated waiting for stuff to come in the mail or waiting for somebody
04:59else to do it for me.
05:00So I just kind of taught myself.
05:02That's awesome.
05:03It's a very ranch person thing to say.
05:04Yeah.
05:05She's a one-stop shop.
05:08She can do leather work.
05:10She can brand.
05:11She can rope.
05:12She can ride.
05:13She can weld.
05:14How are you feeling about helping with the project?
05:16Well, I might be a little intrigued.
05:18Okay.
05:19Awesome.
05:20So thinking about a two-hour drive one way.
05:22Right.
05:23Is there a place to stay?
05:25Room and board.
05:26Oh!
05:27You have my attention.
05:28My mama's a pretty good cook.
05:29Ranch cook.
05:30Mm-hmm.
05:31It's going to be fun that all the construction guys are going to come and stay, you know,
05:33get to hang out and visit and get to work on the building.
05:36If you let us crash here, and if mama's willing to feed us...
05:39You betcha.
05:40...I'm highly confident we can come up with a solution.
05:42Sounds great.
05:43I'm excited.
05:44Love it.
05:46Yep, I'm excited.
05:48Bye, Ike.
05:49See you guys later.
05:50Before we bunk up at Cheyenne's, we've got to work up a plan for what we're going to
05:54do and how we're going to get it done.
05:57Ay-yi-yi.
05:58Oh!
05:59This feels so good.
06:00This is nice.
06:01In the shade.
06:02Well, how cool is Cheyenne?
06:04So cool.
06:05I've got some thoughts and ideas, I'm sure the kid does too, on what the problem is we're
06:10trying to solve, but the personal part of it is what I'm interested in.
06:13Like, she seems very practical.
06:14Very practical.
06:15Right?
06:16Sort of no frills, no fluff.
06:17Yep.
06:18She said she has a tiny little workspace right now, like most people that have art in their
06:23heart.
06:24So we need some space, better lighting, and a comfortable location.
06:27I think my next question is what should we build it out of?
06:30Because it needs to be something that's functional, obviously.
06:33But in my mind, it should be something that's low maintenance.
06:36I mean, the only thing that I can think of is one of the first projects that we did that
06:41was like a shed that had the cages with the rocks.
06:44Oh, the community garden shed that we built, the Gabion walls.
06:47Yeah, when you fill a steel frame with rocks like that, it's called a Gabion cage.
06:51Yeah, something of that essence would be cool because it's like something that we know
06:54will last a long time.
06:55Gabion building would be cool.
06:57Plus, it would totally match the whole rugged ranch look.
07:01You sure wouldn't have to maintain anything.
07:03Yeah, definitely.
07:04Hail proof, tornado proof.
07:05Tornado proof.
07:06I mean, honestly, if they ever needed a shelter, just go in there.
07:09Well, I think we just, if we kept it with a steel roof, right?
07:12That would match everything else, right?
07:13Yep.
07:14Easy, hail proof, all the things.
07:15But how can we stop wind blowing through the rocks in the winter?
07:18So, it'd have to be an insulated structure.
07:21Yep.
07:22Okay?
07:23This would have to be climate controlled.
07:24Can we put like two inches of foam in between the wall somehow?
07:27I mean, we could do that, but with like real insulation.
07:30A wall in between the cage.
07:33Like an insulated stud wall.
07:35Yeah.
07:36And that would help us to attaching the cages up and adding like a structural element as well.
07:40Okay, I like this.
07:42That'd help support the weight of all those rocks.
07:44So, it looks like it's a stone building all the way through, but it's just a stone facade
07:49on the inside, the stone facade on the outside.
07:51Mm-hmm.
07:52Yeah, I like that.
07:53That would be cool.
07:54Should we do a Gabion building for her?
07:56Yeah.
07:57Super unique.
07:58She likes to chill with her friends.
08:00Right, so I think I wonder if we can make a section of this, not just for her work,
08:04but also for...
08:05A little getaway.
08:06Mm-hmm.
08:07I like that kid.
08:08Ooh, I want to get something for her horses.
08:12A place for her to like tie them up.
08:15So, a hitching post.
08:16Yeah.
08:17I think that's great because she unloads her horses all the time.
08:19So, if we give her a good place to tie them up...
08:21Yeah.
08:22That'd be...
08:23What do you say?
08:24Off the hook?
08:25Off...
08:26Off the chain.
08:27Off the chain.
08:28Off the chain.
08:29Off the chain.
08:30It would be off the chain.
08:31Off the chain.
08:32Good job.
08:33To give Cheyenne a ranch-style workshop and hangout that is truly one of a kind, we're
08:38turning to an ancient building technique that'll feel right at home on the prairie.
08:42Gabion walls.
08:43Picture steel baskets stuffed with rocks.
08:46Tons of them.
08:47To handle all that weight, we'll add hidden panels that makes the structure solid, weatherproof,
08:52and insulated.
08:53Then, we'll install windows and doors, inset in a rugged metal frame, and then top it off
08:59with a hail-proof steel roof.
09:01Inside, Cheyenne gets her dream leather-working space, plus room to relax with family and friends.
09:07And outside, a spot to tie up her horses.
09:10But, we've got a big hurdle.
09:12The building's way out in the remote corner of South Dakota.
09:15Forgetting one tool could cost us the whole day.
09:18So, we'll need to bring our A-game and every last supply to pull it off.
09:22I'm pretty excited to give her her own space.
09:25She needs it.
09:26I like it.
09:27Alright.
09:28I'll work on hitching posts, working with her to see her shop, and work on interior.
09:33So, you want to work on the concrete plan?
09:35I'll work on the tonnage for the rock.
09:37We got a plan?
09:38We have a plan.
09:39Let's do it.
09:41Awesome.
09:52Well, Sprout and I source materials and get packing.
09:58Let's go, go, go.
09:59I've sent Ruby ahead to clear the build site for the foundation.
10:02Timber.
10:03Hey, Caleb.
10:04Is that the direction you wanted it to go?
10:07No!
10:09Ruby's good buddy Caleb, who also happens to be Cheyenne's brother-in-law, pitches in.
10:13Even Caleb's kids help them dig the trenches for the support walls and fill them with concrete.
10:22Then, they prep the pad for the in-floor heat, which is crucial for those freezing prairie winters.
10:27So, this is the foam that you put down to go underneath.
10:31So, that way, when you put heat to it, your heat doesn't escape out the floor.
10:35It makes it come up into the building.
10:38Our second concrete pour seals it all up and forms the front porch pad.
10:44We give that porch floor a wood grain stamp, so it feels right at home with the western style.
10:52While the concrete cures, the team heads back to Shortgrass for a lumber delivery.
10:58This wood will be transformed into the wall panels that will be inset inside the gabion walls.
11:07I got this cute little square box that we're going to build.
11:09Okay.
11:10272 inches long.
11:11Okay.
11:12I need a window centered in the back.
11:14And then we have another one that's a cute little window that's going to go up front.
11:17Same dimension.
11:18And I got a door.
11:19Got it.
11:20And I know you.
11:21You're going to line everything up.
11:22It'll kick.
11:23Alright.
11:24Cool.
11:25I'll see you later, bud.
11:27We're going to build our walls on the trailer here.
11:30And the reason we're doing that is because we have tools here.
11:34The outpost is out in the middle of nowhere, South Dakota.
11:38It's a beautiful place.
11:39But for the convenience of building, this is the way to do it.
11:54The prep work is almost done and we're packing up our modern day wagon train for this move to the ranch.
12:01Deer is getting loaded.
12:02Batteries are juiced.
12:03Ruby's cutting up wood for the roof trusses.
12:06Someone put a new blade in that saw.
12:08That was amazing.
12:09We're headed over to Cheyenne's place today, which is about 100 miles a little northeast of here.
12:16We're taking this huge convoy.
12:19Dustin's got the mule.
12:20Ruby's got the big trailer with the wall stacks on it.
12:23I'm driving the triple that has all the gas tanks, the welder, the metal panels, the toolboxes, all the stuff that we need.
12:30Cheyenne's place is just a little over a mile from the middle of nowhere.
12:35So, if you don't bring it with you, you don't have it.
12:44So, we've got everything on your list.
12:46I have to stop for insulation on the way, and then I have to stop and get strap steel, the 10-inch steel that we're boxing the windows out with.
12:53Did you bring your toothbrush?
12:54I did.
12:55Did you bring any shoes?
12:56I did.
12:57These are steel-toed flip-flops he's got today.
13:02You get a very, I need a drink with an umbrella in it sort of look happening right now.
13:07Well, let's get stuff strapped down, and we'll get out of here.
13:12Fingers crossed we've grabbed all of our gear and our pets, because it's going to sting if we leave something behind.
13:18While Cappy and the crew head to the ranch, I'm in the legendary Goldrush town of Deadwood, just down the road from Spearfish.
13:30This place is packed with antique shops, and since Cheyenne's crazy about her horses, I'm on the lookout for something to help her literally hold her horses.
13:39Hello.
13:41Hello.
13:42I was wondering where I might find some hitching posts.
13:44I think we have some of those.
13:45Okay.
13:46Start with that corner over there, and see what you can find.
13:48Okay.
13:49Thank you so much.
13:51There's all sorts of stuff in here.
13:54I suppose we could have some antlers, but I am a little bit worried about these being outside.
14:01Awesome hat though.
14:02Hi.
14:03I want the cat.
14:04I kind of like the coat hooks, but I'm pretty sure she would need something a bit more stable.
14:18Oh my gosh.
14:19These are exactly Cheyenne.
14:22Oh my gosh, it's so exciting.
14:24These are perfect for her.
14:31Here we are.
14:36Okay.
14:37First item on my supply run is angle iron.
14:41We'll use this to construct the window and door box in Cheyenne's new leatherworking workshop.
14:49This build is going to be awesome, but the material list is a mile long, so I've got a bunch more stops before I can roll up to the build site.
14:57It's going to be a while until I can catch up with Dustin and Ruby.
15:00Hi, buddy.
15:01Hey.
15:02It's pretty out here, isn't it?
15:03It's gorgeous.
15:04It's gorgeous.
15:05You ready to go check out this job site?
15:06Yeah.
15:07I'm so excited.
15:08Let's go get something built.
15:09All right.
15:10Come on.
15:12So we've dug all this out, poured the footer on top of here, so we just need some help squaring
15:15it up a little bit, and then we'll be ready to pull these walls off.
15:16You always need help squaring.
15:17I know.
15:18You're a little crooked.
15:20We're not going to start putting the wall panels up until I know that everything is
15:21plastic.
15:22I know.
15:23I know.
15:24You're a little crooked.
15:26We're not going to start putting the wall panels up until I know that everything is plastic.
15:29I know that everything is plumb and level, and all of our measurements check out.
15:32So from here over, you should be at 272.
15:35That's about right.
15:36That's about right?
15:37Yep.
15:38Cool.
15:39That's what we need to be.
15:40Now we just got to put the walls on.
15:42Can we do it?
15:43I think so.
15:44I totally think so.
15:45Do you think you can get it done before Cappy shows up?
15:46We can sure try.
15:47Now I'm picking up steel for the door and window frames.
15:59I've got to think two steps ahead and anticipate anything the build might throw at us.
16:05Out there, forget one key item and the whole operation can stall for hours.
16:12Dustin's rocking the flip flops.
16:17So he's got the cushy gig behind the controls of the skid steer.
16:22I've got the work boots on.
16:24So I'm the one loading these heavy panels up so we can set them on the foundation.
16:29See if it'll pick it.
16:30Skid steer forks don't go deep enough.
16:33If you sit on it, it will.
16:35Okay.
16:36I'd say we back up and set it over there.
16:41Woo!
16:42Alright, give me just a second.
16:49Good job.
16:54I think we got it.
16:57We've got all the tools.
16:58We've got all the steel that we're going to make the window box out of.
17:01I've got the plywood for the sheeting.
17:02I've got the metal panels that we're going to actually build the gabion cage out of.
17:06I woke up 13 hours ago and I haven't been to the job site yet.
17:09But I've got one heck of a trailer full of stuff.
17:12Since I'm still two hours away, I'm not going to make it out there until late tonight.
17:17But I have no doubt that Dustin and Ruby are keeping us on schedule.
17:21We're going to pick this wall up at the skid steer and we're going to crawl it in really
17:26slowly.
17:27We're going to set it down, anchor to the concrete, back her up and grab another one.
17:30We're going to do it again.
17:32Never done this before.
17:34For reals?
17:36For reals.
17:37Yeah, me neither.
17:38Oh man.
17:39This ticket's low.
17:40That's all I say.
17:41I know because it's going to swing on me.
17:44Beautiful.
17:45Nice and easy.
17:46Keep coming.
17:47Okay.
17:48You've got it up.
17:49Now move forward slowly.
17:51Do you feel like you can't see where you're going?
17:54I can't see nothing.
17:55Okay.
17:56I'll be your eyes.
17:57Don't turn.
17:58Just keep going straight.
17:59Keep going straight.
18:00Keep going straight.
18:02Let's start seeing the concrete just second right over there.
18:06All right.
18:07Here's the step.
18:08Now take it slow.
18:09Once your weight shifts over the edge, the front's going to drop down.
18:14Okay.
18:15Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
18:16Stop.
18:17Stop.
18:18Stop.
18:19Hold on until it stops swinging.
18:21You're slowly going to want to go that way a little bit.
18:22You're getting closer all the time.
18:23You're doing great.
18:24Nice.
18:25Nice, okay.
18:26Nice and easy.
18:27Bring her in again.
18:28That's good.
18:29Whoa!
18:30Whoa!
18:31Nice!
18:32No way, though, back here.
18:34Nice.
18:35Nice way, nice.
18:36Let's goinden.
18:38Let me get this thing a little time in too late.
18:39That's a crazy buoyant.
18:50Okay.
18:51Just running in too late.
18:53Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
18:54All right, let's get the wall secured.
19:00Oh, it looks really good, man.
19:02You did great.
19:03We just got to put some supports on here.
19:05Yeah.
19:06We'll anchor the bottom down, and then three more to go.
19:09OK.
19:10Between you and Sprout, I'm going to lose the job.
19:15By the time I roll in late at night, Ruby and Dustin have already gone to sleep.
19:20Luckily, Cheyenne has a bed waiting for me.
19:23I thought I'd be tired this morning, but there's just something about waking up on a ranch that fills you with energy.
19:34We're getting set up. The building got constructed.
19:36We're getting insulation done on the inside today, sheeting on the inside today.
19:39We have to do a bunch of welding today.
19:42I think Ms. Cheyenne's going to come help us today.
19:45There's no easy days on a ranch.
19:48There's very few vacations.
19:51And for Cheyenne, her leather work is her time off.
19:55She gets to go into her tiny, tiny little corner of this shop that she uses right now and create these things.
20:00She doesn't want to sell them.
20:01She makes these things for her and her friends, but it's her escape.
20:06So what I'm most excited about is to get her a dedicated place to do this.
20:11Hello.
20:12Hello.
20:13Get you just in time for arts and crafts time.
20:15Oh, perfect.
20:16We need to build boxes that mount around the windows.
20:19Okay.
20:20Okay.
20:21Okay.
20:22So, four of these boxes.
20:23We're going to give ourselves a little slop around there so when we do set the window,
20:27if you ever had to replace it, you don't have to move ten tons of rock.
20:30Sounds great.
20:31To do it.
20:32Okay.
20:33I appreciate you helping.
20:34I'm not a very good sit around and watch other people work kind of a gal.
20:36Watch other people do stuff?
20:37No.
20:38That's all right.
20:39Especially when it's in my yard.
20:40We don't often have clients that know how to house and fabricate and build and run nail guns and things.
20:45So I appreciate it.
20:46Uh, yeah.
20:47It'll go a lot faster.
20:48Yeah.
20:49I'm excited.
20:50Clearly Cheyenne has this under control.
20:55While she cuts the steel for the window frames, grieving dust and finish shoring up the wall that'll go between the cages.
21:02When those cages are filled with rock, the structure will be able to withstand just about anything.
21:08Cheyenne is going to be able to sit in here during World War I.
21:12Two.
21:13Three.
21:14The apocalypse.
21:15The apocalypse.
21:16That's what the new generation says.
21:18The apocalypse.
21:19Yeah.
21:20This is going to be zombie proof.
21:32I just arrived at Cheyenne's ranch and Cappy has no clue I'm here.
21:37Which makes this the perfect time for a little payback.
21:40The apocalypse is a perfect time for the hospital.
21:42And it's because of the death.
21:43That's what I was trying to do with it.
21:46And it's going to be like, oh yeah.
21:47Oh no.
21:48Oh no.
21:49Oh no.
21:50Oh no.
21:51Oh no.
21:52Oh no.
21:53Oh no.
21:54Oh no.
21:55Oh no.
21:56Oh no.
21:57Oh no.
21:58That looks so good.
21:59Oh no.
22:00Oh no.
22:01Oh no.
22:02Oh no.
22:03Oh no.
22:04Oh no.
22:05Oh no.
22:06Oh no.
22:07Oh no.
22:08Oh, you're so funny.
22:33I'm like, no, it can't be on the fritz.
22:35We're so far out.
22:36I'm here to offer some help.
22:39Go check in with Ruby and Dustin and see what they got.
22:41And yeah.
22:42OK.
22:43Gear shifter.
22:44Gear shifter.
22:47She left it unplugged.
22:55Hi.
22:56Oh, wow.
22:57It looks big.
22:59It's really big in here.
23:01That is a great view.
23:03Isn't it beautiful?
23:04It looks fake.
23:05Like one of those pictures they put over the kitchen sinks?
23:07Uh-huh.
23:08I totally agree with that.
23:09How may I help?
23:11I'll get an insulation around the window.
23:12Yeah.
23:17See if those fit.
23:19Yep.
23:20It works.
23:21Next, we put up the plywood.
23:28Nice.
23:29Everyone is clicking.
23:31The build's moving full speed ahead.
23:33I love it when folks from different walks of life get
23:35to come together and get things done.
23:38Building, ranching, life.
23:52But we wake up the next morning to find a storm has rolled in.
23:57And after raining all night, the mud is everywhere.
24:00Ladders are slick.
24:02Tools are wet.
24:03The conditions are dangerous.
24:06When we're done, the Gabion house we're building for Cheyenne won't just be for looks.
24:22It'll be strong enough to handle the crazy twists and turns of this prairie weather.
24:33But for now, the only smart move is to hold the work.
24:36It's not about being tough.
24:37It's about being safe.
24:39I don't know how he looks is how we feel.
24:43Do we know what the radar is?
24:45Do we have any idea?
24:46Is this supposed to get worse?
24:48It's supposed to soften me, I'm pretty sure.
24:50Let's take a break till lunch and get a little rest, get a little dry clothes and get some food in us.
24:59We're grateful for the rare chance to rest.
25:01Because just like an old-time cowboy, it's good to get a little shut-eye whenever you can.
25:18By early afternoon, the storm has blown over.
25:21And we're back at it.
25:23But now, we have half a day to get twice the work done.
25:26Is that heavy?
25:27It's high.
25:28Yeah, it's heavy.
25:30Is it heavy?
25:31No!
25:33No, it's good.
25:33Light as a feather.
25:41Another storm is forecasted for tomorrow.
25:43I really want to see these window frames in.
25:46The gabion cage is up and filled with 70 tons of rock and the roof on before it hits.
25:52If we don't beat it, we'll fall further behind and spend more time away from home.
26:01But just like that, the cavalry arrives.
26:07I love it.
26:11Cheyenne's family, friends, and neighbors show up, ready to pitch in.
26:14Shawnee's out here.
26:16She's stapling the gabion to the outside wall.
26:18Wait, wait, wait.
26:19And then we got Quint.
26:21He's one of the neighbors.
26:22He's a rock star.
26:23Tanner's, he's cutting more gabion stuff on the inside.
26:26I got Danny and Shawnee and Dustin.
26:30It's going to look awesome.
26:32With so many hands that gabion cages snap together in no time.
26:37Then it's all about making the walls rock solid, literally.
26:41It's going to be a rocking day.
26:44There's 12 people on this job site, 12.
26:48So Cheyenne, so not only does she come out and help, her mom's here, her dad's here,
26:52her sister, her brother-in-law.
26:54Two friends from down the road are here.
26:56They're not here for money.
26:57They're not here for anything other than their friend needed some help and asked them.
27:01And they know Cheyenne will be there when they need help.
27:03So pretty awesome all the way around.
27:08Once the first walls are done, I rope in a few folks to raise the first roof truss.
27:13To beat the storm, we've got to work every part of this build at the same time.
27:20So we're going to use the skid steer to take us up in the air and help get this truss stood up flat.
27:26It should sit right on that, dude.
27:31Just, we're getting western with everything.
27:33We got a skid steer as a platform.
27:35We got a UTV inside the building that we're welding from.
27:39We're, uh, we're bracing some stuff off to a tree,
27:42but it's only temporary until we get the truss nailed down.
27:45This is a ranch build, baby.
27:47Unfortunately, we're flying through the rock supply.
27:50So I called in a favor for my favorite rock guy.
27:55That's Bob.
27:57Bob's camera shy, but not shy when it comes to helping a friend.
28:02He's going to drop the load without stopping a little trick called spreading.
28:06It's faster and safer if you do it right.
28:13And yeah, he nailed it.
28:16We needed some more rock.
28:17Called him this morning.
28:18He said, I'll be there in two hours.
28:21More rock.
28:22Everyone loves Bob.
28:31Since I can't put more roofing on until the walls are finished,
28:35I jump in on the rock work.
28:37It's looking pretty good.
28:38We don't want anything over the cage.
28:40There's something oddly satisfying about piecing together this giant stone puzzle,
28:45especially knowing this technique has been around for centuries.
28:48So gabion has been around since the Egyptian times.
28:52They used to use woven baskets full of rocks to help with erosion.
28:56Da Vinci used them for foundations of buildings.
28:59And then obviously now, like a modern use of them, you see them a lot along highways
29:05and bridge abutments and things.
29:06They use it for also erosion control.
29:10It's like a real life building block video game.
29:14These blocks aren't the only thing getting built.
29:16I'm building up an appetite too.
29:18Who else is hungry?
29:19What?
29:20Hey, get your hands out of there.
29:22Empty.
29:27I just wanted an opportunity to eat.
29:33Luckily, more neighbors show up with food.
29:36And they stay to lend a hand.
29:39It takes a village out here in rural America to get anything done.
29:43So it's just been a blessing to have friends that are like family.
29:47And knowing how much family means to Cheyenne, we found the perfect way to honor them in this build.
29:54So this is a piece of petrified wood that was out in front of Cheyenne's house.
29:59So her grandma was a big rock hound.
30:01So she kept rocks, collected them, put them around the garden, all around the property.
30:05And these are some of them that were left.
30:07So this is a big piece that took a few of us to get it into the building.
30:11We actually put it in before we welded the cage in.
30:14But yeah, it's got these cute little plants growing out of it.
30:17But I thought that would be a neat thing for
30:19her to have a little piece of her grandma inside this building.
30:22It turned out to be a good day.
30:26Just shy of nine o'clock.
30:27So we're losing our light.
30:29It was a really, really wet day in the beginning.
30:32No one stopped.
30:34These guys are still grinding.
30:35But Cheyenne's mom made us supper.
30:38So I'm going to make them stop.
30:39We're going to go eat supper.
30:40This chicken?
30:41No, that's sweet potato.
30:43Yeah, that's like a sweet potato.
30:45Oh, it's right here.
30:45Right here.
30:46I'm so tired.
30:47That's good.
30:49What is weather tomorrow, do we know?
30:50Rain.
31:02Looks like we've dodged the rain and its clear skies.
31:05But before the South Dakota weather changes its mind again,
31:08I've rallied all our ranch hands to help me raise the roof.
31:13And once again, neighbors and families come rolling in, ready to work.
31:20Got them.
31:21Got them.
31:21Everyone is here except Cheyenne.
31:24She's off on a fencing mission, so she won't catch a glimpse of the final layers that really
31:28make this place sink.
31:30Got them.
31:30So we started flying the trusses and lining them all up.
31:34After that, we're going to put on our rake rafters, which are our little pieces that stick out over the
31:38edge.
31:39And then we're going to sheet it.
31:41And we'll be ready for a roof.
31:42Everything is running smoothly.
31:47And I head back to town to pick up a couple of items that just came in.
31:51Windows and an air conditioning unit.
31:54So I hand the reins over to Ruby while I make the long ride back into town.
31:59Because what's a big build without at least one last minute supply run?
32:02Thanks, dude.
32:03Have a good one, man.
32:04Appreciate it, brother.
32:04Yep.
32:05Hey, come forward.
32:10While I'm gone, the team adds galvanized steel sheeting to the top of the picture-perfect
32:15ranch-style roof.
32:18Perfect.
32:21And Sprout does some touch-up work on the gabion walls.
32:26It's a lot heavier than I thought that was going to be.
32:29Okay.
32:30The walls just went up, and they're looking really good.
32:39However, there's always these small holes that just aren't filled because when the rocks fall,
32:44they don't always hit exactly where we want them to.
32:47So we will take these small guys, especially the ones that are flat, and we'll wedge them in tight
32:53so it looks fuller.
32:56Sprout notices the details that most folks would miss.
33:00And that's what takes our builds to the next level.
33:03Take a look.
33:07Meanwhile, out front, Ruby works on a special surprise for Cheyenne.
33:11This whole little area right here is where Cheyenne unloads and loads her horses all the time.
33:15So we're actually going to put a hitching post in here for her so that she can actually tie her
33:19horses up after a long day of riding.
33:23Ready?
33:23Yeah, do it.
33:24I love it.
33:28Man, that's beautiful.
33:30We're setting these posts in as best we can.
33:33When you've got a couple thousand pound critters sitting there pushing on them,
33:36you really want them to sit solid.
33:38And the nice thing about standing it really packs in good, especially when it's a little bit moist.
33:42That looks great right there.
33:45You know, everybody needs a place to tie their horse up at the end of the day,
33:48and every horse needs a place to go.
33:50So this will be a safe place and a good spot to put them.
33:53Cheyenne's back from fencing, so I'm keeping her away from the build site
34:02by doing a little undercover recon on her leather working setup.
34:06It's the perfect way to figure out what she'll need in her brand new space.
34:11Hello.
34:11Hi, Alex.
34:12Oh, wow, yeah.
34:14It's cramped, that's for sure.
34:15It's pretty tight up here, isn't it?
34:16Uh-huh.
34:17I'm just practicing on tooling.
34:19You want to jump in?
34:20Yeah, absolutely.
34:21So this is tooling.
34:23This is how you would do a belt or a bracelet or anything like that.
34:27It has all these decorative patterns in it, and we use these tools.
34:31They're like geometric patterns, all different types.
34:34Yeah, and those make those shapes?
34:36Yep, yep, and it just adds like a pretty element.
34:38Okay.
34:39So here's a piece of leather you can tool on.
34:41This is a little snippet of a belt.
34:43Okay.
34:44So you just line your corners up here, right on your line.
34:47And if you want to stamp a few, you sure are welcome to.
34:50Okay.
34:50Don't be afraid to whap it.
34:52Yep.
34:55Oh, wow.
34:56Look at you go.
34:57And while Sprouts stamped some leather,
35:00Ruby and Caleb set their sights on some steel.
35:03The steel ceiling, that is.
35:04So we're going to go ahead and bring some steel in.
35:08Caleb's got it cut and ready to go.
35:09We're using steel because it kind of just matches the decor of the whole building,
35:13and it really gives you that kind of western South Dakota feel.
35:16The country vibe.
35:17That country vibe.
35:18I like that one the best.
35:22We're going to lay it up here on top of this drywall lift.
35:26Just so we have an extra hand to lift this up on the ceiling to hold in place.
35:29And then we're going to screw it off into the rafters on top of the ceiling.
35:37It should go quick.
35:38There's no mudding.
35:39There's no taping.
35:40There's no texturing.
35:41There's no painting.
35:43It is a finished product as soon as we walk away from it.
35:45So it saves us a little time, and it looks good.
35:52Wonderful.
35:53It's just really interesting, too.
35:55You know, as where I live on a ranch, we raise cows.
35:59Yeah.
35:59And here I work with leather.
36:01It's a full circle moment.
36:02You know, we get to recycle and reuse that.
36:04Well, and I think that we also operate in a similar way where with our industry,
36:10there's so much waste, and we really try to be as aware of it as possible.
36:15Out here on the ranch, you have to use what you have.
36:18Mm-hmm.
36:19Absolutely.
36:19Well, especially since you're out in the middle of nowhere,
36:21there's not exactly like a store that's like right down the street.
36:24Right.
36:32I'm back at the ranch with the final pieces we need.
36:34The window's built tough enough to fight off our bone-chilling winters.
36:42Love it.
36:43Oh, that looks great.
36:45And an AC unit to battle our scorching summers.
36:49Around here, you got to be ready for both ends of the thermometer.
36:54All right.
36:54AC's it.
37:04Sprout and I have one more important ingredient to add before the build is ready to show to Cheyenne.
37:11Hello.
37:12Hey, kiddo.
37:13Those things are pretty cool, dude.
37:14I was so excited.
37:16How many antique stores have?
37:18Yeah, Jean-Bose.
37:19Yeah, exactly.
37:20Welcome to South Dakota.
37:21I guess.
37:23Does that look good?
37:25Yes.
37:25Okay, I like that.
37:31That's pretty cool, kid.
37:32You look good.
37:34Nice job.
37:35I like it.
37:36Looks really good.
37:45Despite the wild weather and being in the middle of nowhere, my crew, Cheyenne,
37:50her family and friends rose to the challenge and created something truly unforgettable.
37:57Now Sprout and I are adding the finishing touches before we finally reveal it to Cheyenne.
38:03Dude, looks so good.
38:04Yeah, dude.
38:05I think she'll be over the moon because she'd never built something like this for herself.
38:08I'm really proud of this one.
38:09This is cool, kid.
38:11I am coming.
38:13I'm so excited.
38:14I'm going to stop right here.
38:19Okay.
38:19All right.
38:20Hi, puppies.
38:21Don't peek.
38:21I'm not peeking.
38:23I got you.
38:24You ready?
38:24Back, back, back, back.
38:27Okay, you got to stay right here.
38:28Eyes closed.
38:29They're closed.
38:30They're closed?
38:30Okay.
38:30They're not closed.
38:31They're left open.
38:32Stay right there.
38:32I can see them.
38:33I can see your eyes.
38:34That's a mirage.
38:36How nuts are you right now?
38:38Is this driving you crazy that you haven't been here for, what, two days?
38:41Thank you for all the help that you did, by the way.
38:43It's amazing.
38:44You call it, Ruby.
38:45Well, I'm going to spin her.
38:46You ready?
38:46Let's do it.
38:47One, two, three.
38:52Wow!
38:52That is so awesome!
38:55Oh, I love it.
38:57That's so pretty.
38:59This is so great.
39:00Awesome.
39:01Oh, look at the horses.
39:03Yeah.
39:03It's a hitching post.
39:04That's cool.
39:05Sprout wanted you to have a hitching post for your horse.
39:07Yeah, that's awesome.
39:09My grandma would have loved those.
39:10Did you think this is what it would look like when we were done?
39:12Way better than I thought.
39:13It's pretty awesome.
39:15I don't think anybody in South Dakota has a Gabion building.
39:17I have never seen a Gabion building anywhere.
39:21But now I got one, so it's pretty cool.
39:24The thing that impressed me the most was the community.
39:27Like, if you need help, people come help.
39:29That's what you do.
39:29This lifestyle takes a village.
39:31You just, you don't do it by yourself.
39:33You can't do it by yourself.
39:34Every day we'd come to work here and there's two more strangers.
39:36They just couldn't resist.
39:38I love it.
39:39But I think, but that shows who you are though.
39:41Yeah.
39:41Because they wouldn't come here if it wasn't you.
39:43And I think that's amazing.
39:44You ready to see the inside of this thing?
39:45Let's do it.
39:46After you, madame.
39:47Me?
39:47Yeah.
39:48Okay.
39:52Oh, wow.
39:54No way.
39:55Oh my goodness.
39:56You guys put all my stuff in here.
39:58You can stand up.
39:59I know.
40:01Oh, look at the little tool thing.
40:02That is so cool.
40:03I saw how all of your stuff was like scattered on the table.
40:07And if I was you, I would want somewhere to hang things.
40:09So yeah, I found one.
40:11No, that's awesome.
40:12And we moved all your very heavy stuff out of your very tiny shop.
40:15Sewing machines weigh a lot.
40:17They do.
40:18They're pretty hefty.
40:19We also have a place for you to cut and stain.
40:21Oh my goodness.
40:22And space to relax with family and friends.
40:25This is wonderful.
40:26I love it.
40:27This is going to be a wonderful workspace.
40:29It's big enough for my friends and my family.
40:31And now there's so many more options.
40:33If I need to get more supplies and more equipment, it's big enough.
40:36It was beyond my expectations.
40:38So part of the reason we designed it the way we did was really to do with
40:42you live in a hundred plus year old house that your dad was born in and raised in.
40:46Your grandma lived there.
40:47Your great grandmother built it.
40:49So we didn't want to have a stick frame building or a pole barn or a shed.
40:52A hundred years from now, I want this to be a legacy for you.
40:55That they'll talk about, oh, this was Cheyenne's leather shop.
40:59This was her space.
41:00Oh, I appreciate it.
41:01This is just going to be awesome.
41:02Well, and your little petrified wood from grandma.
41:05Oh yeah.
41:05That was my grandma's piece.
41:06That piece there.
41:07Yup.
41:07My grandma would have loved this place.
41:08She was just a rot collector, so.
41:10Oh, awesome.
41:11When I saw my grandma's artifacts in there, it was really cool that they were able to
41:16tie in a little bit of my family heritage into the building.
41:19And now when I go in there, I have something to
41:22be reminded of them and always have those memories with me.
41:25With the cage on either side and then the interior walls, like this building is beefy.
41:30It's almost 70 tons of stone.
41:33If there's ever a tornado, just, you know, pop on in here.
41:36This is the place, yeah.
41:36Oh, this will not go away.
41:37I don't think so.
41:40You know, I have to tell you how much I just loved working with you guys.
41:44And I know that the weather was kind of harsh.
41:46We had some bad rains.
41:47But at the end of the day, we built this beautiful little building and had so much fun.
41:52And I can't wait to come back.
41:53It's going to be utilized.
41:54Full potential.
41:55Oh, yes.
41:55Yes.
41:56And speaking of friends, I hear that the entire town is here for you.
42:00So we will let you see them.
42:03Sounds great.
42:03Amazing.
42:04You're the coolest.
42:05Thank you much.
42:07Yeah, whatever.
42:10I'll see you.
42:11Yep.
42:13Thanks, Tracy.
42:13Get it done.
42:14You're welcome.
42:15Nice place you're going here.
42:16I know.
42:17Hi, Rainey.
42:18Hi, Shatney.
42:19How's it going, Reesey?
42:23Come on in, girl, grandpa.
42:27It's very nice.
42:27It's nice and cool.
42:35Don't you love how the community is just coming out here?
42:44We came out with three of us, and we ended up with 12.
42:46I love it.
42:47They're all working.
42:48It's like, yeah, I think it's great.
42:50We're the only three not working.
42:51I know.
42:52We should get that.
42:53I got to get some stuff up.
