00:54How many of us know Ryan Destiny? The beautiful Ryan Destiny.

01:03So y'all give it up for Lacey Redway.

01:36This is Beauty That Bonds.
01:40Hello, everybody.
01:42My name is Blake Newby, and welcome to the Shea Moisture Beauty That Bonds conversation.
01:49I am so excited to be here.
01:52And today we're going to talk about sisterhood, bonding, and the collectiveness that brings the black community together.
01:58We're going to talk about trends versus what's in versus what's out.
02:03So I am so excited to be joined by two ladies who really do not need an introduction, but I'm going to introduce them anyway.
02:11So first we have the lovely Lacey Redway, celebrity hairstylist extraordinaire, and Shea Moisture education partner.
02:19Doesn't she look fabulous, y'all?
02:29She looks good.
02:31And so, you know, while we know you guys are excited to see us, we know who you're really here to see.
02:38So without further ado, I'd like to welcome to the stage the It Girl herself, actress, singer, and songwriter, Ryan Destiny.
02:49Y'all see the body in this dress?
03:06Yep.
03:08All right, just a little mic passing.
03:10All right.
03:11So, ladies, as you guys can see, it's set up here because we're going to turn this just into Beauty Shop Chats.
03:17So who remembers the talks, the many things that you bonded over at the beauty salon?
03:25Yeah.
03:26And so today we are going to do that.
03:27We're going to lean into that.
03:29So, Lacey, I want to talk to you first.
03:31Hey, girl.
03:31We've been Shea Moisture Bond girls.
03:34Yes.
03:35For a while.
03:35For a while.
03:36We've been bonding for a minute.
03:37I feel like the Shea Moisture family, it really is a family.
03:40Like, we really are locked in.
03:41So I'd love if you could share a little bit about your journey as a Shea Moisture partner.
03:46Yes.
03:46So I have been with Shea Moisture for a while.
03:51And what I love about Shea Moisture is, you know, aside from the product, is the way that they bring us together, you know?
04:00So they always have such a great group of people that, you know, I work with.
04:05They give me the freedom as a stylist to really bring what I have to bring to the platform and to the table.
04:13You know, there's so much flexibility for me with the products, you know, to use across all of the platforms that I work, you know, how I work with, you know, photo shoots, you know, on set, runway, all this stuff.
04:28So I just love working with the brand.
04:30And Ryan, she's a new Shea Moisture girl.
04:34So welcome to Sister Husset.
04:36So, you know, all trends come and go.
04:38We see it all the time, especially with the surge in social media.
04:42But the girls really look to you for the trends.
04:45They really do.
04:46Listen, she was on my mood board this morning.
04:49Which look?
04:51Which look?
04:52Which look?
04:52Well, I love when she does her hair big and curly, but I also look at her for makeup inspo, too.
05:00Well, it's this face, though.
05:01Thank you so much.
05:02It's the face.
05:03It's the face.
05:04So what does it feel like to be a trendsetter, especially in today's age, where there are so many trends?
05:11I mean, it's really cool.
05:12It's really, really sweet, you know?
05:14I feel like I just wake up every day and just choose to try different things.
05:19And people like it sometimes.
05:21And, you know, I'm very, very flattered, especially when I see people recreate things that I've done.
05:26And I type, you know, sometimes I'll see myself on Pinterest sometimes of, like, different things.
05:31What does seeing yourself on Pinterest feel like?
05:34I mean, it's fun.
05:35It's cool.
05:37But, yeah, it's very, very flattering.
05:39And it's just fun for me.
05:41But as a performer, you have to do a lot with your hair.
05:44Yes.
05:44If you guys did not know, you have a movie coming out.
05:48I do.
05:49You're on sets all day.
05:51You're on stages all day.
05:52Yes.
05:52How do you keep your hair healthy with constant manipulation?
05:56I mean, it's all about those breaks in between, you know?
05:59Like, really making sure you're taking care of your hair outside of the work that we're doing all the time.
06:05I'm a salon girly.
06:07I still like to go to the salon, you know, get washed really quick, get those treatments in.
06:11Like, I'm so, so big on that, getting my trims and, you know, just giving my hair a break when I can.
06:18It's, like, really, really important.
06:20And I feel like, Lacey, you know this better than anybody because while your hair might not be the one being manipulated every day, you are the one doing the manipulation.
06:27Yes.
06:28So, how do you keep your client's hair healthy under circumstances where they're always going and always being styled?
06:35Honestly, you know, the salon space is still very important.
06:39Yep.
06:39I feel like it is the foundation, you know, for all of us.
06:43So, it's, like, aside from, you know, us seeing a lot of stylists that you can just, like, you know, do their hair, you know, just from Instagram or any of the other platforms,
06:54it's still nice to have a home base of a community where you can, you know, really serve your clients.
06:59And so, for me, I do travel a lot, you know, and I do clients anywhere, like, hotels, wherever.
07:05But, you know, having the right products is key for me to keeping my client's hair healthy.
07:09So, you know, I'm manipulating their hair so much, whether it's, like, for concerts or runway.
07:15So, having products that really help, you know, keep their hair intact, you know, like, I'm always reaching for the bonding oil, you know,
07:25because it really just helps to repair damage, you know,
07:29helps, like, keep humidity down, and it's lightweight.
07:33So, it allows me to interchange styles very easily.
07:37And I'm happy you mentioned the salon space.
07:38So, I'm going to let you guys in on a little secret.
07:40I did not just meet Ryan today.
07:42We have known each other since we were, like, four or five years old.
07:47And we had the same hairstylist growing up as children.
07:51And I think there's something so special.
07:53We were talking about our experience back there in the salon.
07:55Can you talk about what it's like now?
07:57Do you have a salon base?
08:00How do you find that salon base?
08:03You know, it's very, very tricky.
08:05I feel like, you know, I'm based in Los Angeles now.
08:08So, that makes it even trickier.
08:10Especially when you're trying to find someone who does black hair.
08:14Yep.
08:14It is, it's a lot of, you know, blowout salons out there, you know, versus really, you know, our hair.
08:20We need more than a look.
08:21We need more than a look.
08:22Yeah.
08:23You know, you need to get in there.
08:24Yeah.
08:24Really get in it.
08:25So, it's trial and error, honestly.
08:28And, you know, really traveling a little further out, maybe, than I'm used to.
08:34But, there's some places here and there, you know, that I'm thankful that I've found out there.
08:40And, it's so, so important to me.
08:42And, Lacey, how do you kind of cultivate, like you said, sometimes you're in a hotel room.
08:46Sometimes you're not in the salon.
08:48Sometimes I'm in a vehicle.
08:49Sometimes you're in a vehicle.
08:51Yeah.
08:51So, how do you cultivate still that feeling of trust that we have with our hairstylists when we're in a salon, that feeling of comfort?
08:59How do you still cultivate that space and that energy?
09:01Ooh, okay.
09:01I love this question because it honestly ties in so well with the, you know, the message of what this is.
09:08Beauty that bonds.
09:09The beauty that bonds.
09:10Like, for me, the best way for me to give the best version of myself as a stylist to any client is to understand who they are as people.
09:20You know, I have my own ideas of what I think beautiful hair looks like.
09:24But, you've been living with your hair for 20-something, 30-something, 40-something, whatever years.
09:29And, you know, there's different things that we all, you know, are little kings, right?
09:34That we're like, once this one thing is wrong, we think everything is wrong.
09:37So, there's a process and also a level of comfort that you have to have with your stylist.
09:44There has to be a strong bond to really bring out the best version of you.
09:49So, bonding, you know, spending time to really get to know each other.
09:53Sometimes that doesn't happen on the first try, you know.
09:55So, you actually have to give yourself, each other, time to learn about each other and bond and grow.
10:01So, okay.
10:02So, I am going to talk about this because this is trending too.
10:04How many of you guys have ever gotten a hey sis text from a stylist?
10:09Okay.
10:09So, that's less than I expected.
10:11So, y'all got good hair, girls.
10:12That's good.
10:13Lacey, I would love to know how you feel about this new era of hairstylists.
10:17Oh, my gosh.
10:18Yes, Lacey.
10:18Please.
10:18The 75% deposit.
10:20Okay, okay, okay.
10:21How much your hair washed, braided, and blow dried.
10:23Hear me out.
10:23Hear me out.
10:23Hear me out.
10:24Hear me out.
10:25I'm not going to knock anybody's hustle.
10:27Of course not.
10:28Listen, when I started out, I was doing hair in the base.
10:31My dad was the superintendent of my building, and we was using the basement of the building.
10:36Yep.
10:37I was running the shop through the basement.
10:38Yep.
10:39You know, so I was, you know, a stylist that, you know, quote, unquote, like a kitchen stylist.
10:45Like, I was doing hair.
10:47Like, I'm still, I still think I'm like that because I'm still doing hair out of the-
10:50In the car.
10:51You just said in the car.
10:51In the car.
10:52Exactly.
10:53In the hotel.
10:54In the sink.
10:55You know, I still-
10:56By any means necessary.
10:57Any means necessary.
10:58So, I don't think it's a matter of-
11:01I think, yes, there has to be a level of professionalism, you know, and I think that's why salon atmosphere
11:06is still important because hair care is still a thing.
11:09I couldn't see myself doing somebody's hair without making sure that it's properly washed.
11:14Yeah.
11:14And taken care of.
11:15Yeah.
11:15And I think that's the thing that's missing with this new age way of styling where you got
11:21to leave a deposit for this, a deposit for that.
11:23Just include it all in the service, you know, so that you can really-
11:27They're charging girls for a curl to style the actual-
11:31Once the weave is in your head, they want to charge me to style it.
11:35Yes.
11:35Wow.
11:36It's crazy.
11:37Like the wash needs to be included.
11:40Why do you want to touch dirty hair anyway?
11:41And you want to give people treatment, like, you know, to make sure it's going to look good
11:47after you style it.
11:48Yep.
11:48Well, speaking of clean hair, so I got a question backstage and somebody was like, how is your
11:53hair holding up?
11:54Because this humidity is so bad.
11:58It feels like a weighted blanket of heat.
12:00Yes.
12:01Over me every single time I step out.
12:03So what are some ways that you can maintain hair during festival season?
12:07Okay.
12:07And Ryan, you're in this heat too.
12:10I am.
12:10How are you taking care of your hair?
12:13Oh my gosh.
12:13While you're out here.
12:14Should I go first, Lacey?
12:15Are you- Yeah, go for it.
12:16Okay.
12:16Well, I mean, one, I feel like I definitely tried to pick particular styles that work a
12:23little better in the heat.
12:25Yep.
12:25You know, if it was up to me, I would have some braids in my head right now, you know,
12:29but that takes a little time.
12:31So I chose this style and, you know, it's easy when you can slick something up and maybe
12:36just have the rest out that can just do what it does, you know, have a life of its own.
12:41And yeah, I just try to do the best I can with what I got.
12:45So.
12:45Yeah.
12:46So.
12:47You got the braids there.
12:48Girl, I just finished braiding my own hair.
12:50I'm so jealous.
12:51I do my own hair.
12:51You guys, you did this herself.
12:53Lacey, how long did this take you?
12:54Well, to be fair, I got to do it in increments because I got a child, I got a job, so one
13:01day I might have the hat on.
13:02You do the perimeter first and then you pull it up?
13:04What is that?
13:05You do the perimeter first and then you pull up?
13:06No, the perimeter is last.
13:08The perimeter.
13:09Oh, no, the perimeter.
13:10Yeah, I do the perimeter.
13:10You do the perimeter first.
13:11But I'm not really pulling it up.
13:13I'm like, might be in a hat, so I better not get in no fights.
13:15And don't nobody get no ideas when you see me on the streets with my hat.
13:19Doing your braids yourself is so impressive.
13:21Yeah, yeah.
13:22But I'm going to put y'all on game.
13:24Because I do my hair myself, it's not always all braids.
13:28You know, sometimes I put a sew-in in the middle, like today I have a sew-in.
13:32There's a sew-in in the middle of that?
13:34Yeah, and then the leave-out mostly is what's braided.
13:36And it also works for my lifestyle and my career because, you know, I do things on camera
13:41and sometimes I, you know, you don't want to see the holes at the neck, you know, with
13:45little, like, braids.
13:47So it works.
13:48It works.
13:48But, you know, I see a lot of, like, you know, styles out here in the crowd, you know,
13:53and just walking through the convention center that, you know, are great festival styles.
13:57I've seen a lot of braids, a lot of Bantu knots, you know.
14:01And, you know, the products that I've used to, you know, just really help me in this heat
14:06and in this, you know, I'm using the coconut hibiscus, you know, I'm using the curl mousse,
14:13you know, I'm using the mousse.
14:13Yeah, that mousse is really great.
14:14Mousse, yeah.
14:15That's the OG.
14:16Yeah.
14:17And this year, you know.
14:17And the edge control.
14:18The edge control.
14:19Same.
14:20Well, and for the girlies who wear their hair in constant, I'm an extension girly, the bonding
14:25oil is so good.
14:27Yes, I love that.
14:28It's lightweight enough so it's not going to weigh down the hair because, y'all know,
14:31girls that like a little extension, it got to bounce.
14:34Yeah.
14:34That bonding oil.
14:34And it's great for you that style your hair with heat because it has heat protection
14:38built into it.
14:39Yes, yes.
14:39Wow.
14:40So this year, Shea Moisture is, of course, bringing Camp Shea here to the Essence Festival of
14:45Culture.
14:46Camp is all about community.
14:47Like, when I think of camp, you know, I'm not really an outdoorsy girl, but I do think
14:52of-
14:53We glamp, you know.
14:54Yeah, I think, I don't think it ever gave that.
14:56But I always think of community and bonding.
15:00Like, camping is for bonding.
15:02Yes.
15:02So how do you all create community and foster community these days?
15:08Oh, man.
15:09I mean, I feel like for all my life, you know, a lot of the things that, you know, I've gone
15:16through would have been almost impossible without sisterhood, without the women around me.
15:22And I think it's, you know, definitely important to nurture that.
15:27I make sure I try to support a lot of my friends who are also in the industry as much as possible.
15:33You know, it's a very, we see each other type of, you know, experience.
15:39And, you know, we feel for each other.
15:41So we want to be there for each other as much as possible.
15:44And I think that's very important when you see your sister and you see her truly, you
15:51know, and you really, really want to make sure you're showing up for yourself and the
15:58other person, you know, and vice versa.
16:00So I think that's definitely just been a huge, huge thing for me.
16:05I'm going to add to that community.
16:07You know, for me, just even being here with Shea Moisture, like, I've met so many great
16:13girls, my girls in the front row here that, hey, girls.
16:16We had a time the other night.
16:18We've made such great bonding just from being on this trip together.
16:22Like, it has helped really foster community, you know.
16:25And, you know, now I have a new set of girls.
16:28Like, they've been teaching me how to, some of them have been teaching me how to work my
16:31camera because, you know, I'm a little, you know, I'm a little millennial.
16:34They're the content, these are the content girls.
16:35They're teaching me, you know, the content girls, you know, the beautiful girls in the front,
16:40they're teaching me how to, you know, properly do my social media.
16:44But also back to, like, clients, you know, and community and other hairstylists.
16:49Like, that to me is important, you know, having that bond and that relationship.
16:53You know, I've, like, there have been other stylists on this trip as well.
16:57And I've been, like, bonding with them outside of the group because I think it's important,
17:02A, to show each other respect, you know.
17:05Like, we all can share the space and the platform and exist at the same time.
17:08It don't have to be just one of us, you know, at a time.
17:11And I think that's what you're saying, too, about your actor community as well.
17:16And just making sure we show up for each other when we can, you know.
17:19I think that's how you really help build community.
17:22And speaking of showing up for each other, we've mentioned the word bond a lot, beauty that bonds.
17:28In what ways do you guys bond with your moms, your aunts, your friends, anyone over beauty?
17:35What are the things that you all bond over when it comes to the beauty space?
17:39Well, I will say I'm Jamaican.
17:42So, I grew up in – and usually when I'm in New York, I have to differentiate because we have Jamaica queens.
17:49So, I'm from Jamaica.
17:52He's dying.
17:53We got Jamaica queens in the house, too, though.
17:55Well, we got a Jamaica queens in the house.
17:57So, you know, I remember growing up and I had to sit on like a futon in front of a couch like this and my sister would do my hair.
18:06And, you know, as black people, you know, black girls, you know, we have this – we all have this shared experience of, you know, wash day, you know, getting our hair done, getting our hair prepped and, you know, before it's styled.
18:19So, that's how – hair has always been a way that me and my sister and my mom have shared bonds.
18:27I mean, we know how long you can be in the salon for.
18:31So, if you can't bond during that time, I don't know when you can.
18:36But me and you, we used to go to the exact same salon when we were kids.
18:40No, it was a salon exclusively for young children.
18:43Yes.
18:43And we would be in there for hours.
18:46Hours and hours at a time.
18:48But, yes, it's how you make friends.
18:50Yes, you really bond in there, you know, and like Lacey –
18:53Wait, were y'all trauma bonded or what kind of bond?
18:55No, no, no.
18:55As a child, I don't think you know.
18:57I don't know if we knew that.
18:59It was fun at the time.
19:00We were fed.
19:02We had food.
19:02We were well taken care of.
19:03Okay, okay, okay.
19:04Very taken care of.
19:05And like you said, Lacey, like you bond with your hairstylist too.
19:08I mean, I feel like that's one of the biggest relationships that I have as far as like in the industry.
19:14Like you're with your glam team a lot.
19:17Amen.
19:17You know, so it's very important to have really good energy coming from them.
19:22You know, y'all gossiping on that stuff too.
19:25But like what are they like really pouring into, you know?
19:29It's really important.
19:30And, you know, when you meet a stylist, you know, especially like you travel all the time.
19:35So you don't always probably have the same person.
19:37Sometimes you have to meet a new person.
19:39But it's this instant connection that happens, you know?
19:43And that's why you become close with your glam team.
19:45Because, you know, we have to touch you in such an intimate way that sometimes your partner doesn't even get to touch you.
19:50Your partner is not touching your face for two hours at a time.
19:53And your scalp for two hours at a time.
19:54So that instantly builds a bond and a connection that you have.
19:58So it's easy to become close with your glam team for sure.
20:02Well, speaking of glam teams, Ryan, we're about to see a lot of you in a lot of places in the upcoming months.
20:09So we're very much looking forward to more Pinterest board looks.
20:15But speaking in the past, what is your favorite recent hair look that you've done?
20:21Most recently, it would have to be a hair look that I did for the NAACP dinner.
20:28And it was like a very curly, almost Diana Ross-ish.
20:33Ooh, I remember that one.
20:34And, you know, it was very full, very long.
20:38And I've never done a texture really like that before.
20:40And I'm very, very into it.
20:43Like, I want to do more textured looks a lot more in the future.
20:47So I'm excited for that.
20:49Lacey, what's the key to a good textured look?
20:51What's the key to a good textured look?
20:53Well, it depends what texture you're trying to achieve.
20:56Okay.
20:57So there's multiple ways you can go for it.
20:59But I would say start making sure the foundation is right of any style, period, you know?
21:05So if you're curling the hair, don't start from the ends.
21:07If you want big hair, you got to start from the root.
21:11Yeah.
21:11You got to, you know, you got to over direct, you know, you got to really make sure you set the hair.
21:16And setting the hair.
21:17Like, I feel like, you know, we're rushing so much with styling.
21:20Like, I'm all about an old school roller set, an old school, you know, hot rollers and rods.
21:27Tried and true.
21:27I used to do the straw set in my hair when I was, now I'm like giving too, I'm giving a little bit of my age away.
21:33But, you know, just properly setting your hair and having the right products, you know, building your hair, like, from the shower, you know, also.
21:42Making sure the wet products that you're using, shampoo conditioners, are hydrating.
21:47Yep.
21:48They're going to help you with humidity resistance, you know, also making sure that you add leave-in back into your hair, you know, to hydrate.
21:56I did that this morning.
21:56Yeah.
21:57With the Bond leave-in conditioner.
21:59I did that this morning.
21:59Exactly.
22:00You got to pour it into the hair.
22:01And heat protection, you know, the Alma oil, you know, drop some in your hair, too, before you start styling it.
22:07Because it helps with humidity resistance.
22:08It's lightweight, you know, and it just really helps to, you know, with any hair damage.
22:14So, if you're heat styling your hair, you definitely want to protect it as much as possible.
22:18Well, ladies, I could beauty shop talk with y'all all day.
22:21Yeah.
22:21But, unfortunately, that is all the time we have.
22:24So, Lacey and Ryan, thank you so much.
22:26And to our audience, please do not forget to stop by the Shea Moisture booth for styling, product giveaways.
22:33Can I please get a round of applause for these beautiful ladies?

22:39Thank you guys for coming.
22:40Thank you guys so, so much.
22:42Round of applause for Blake, too.
22:44Round of applause for my girl Blake.
