00:00what was it about the plot line that intrigued you the most well the plot line is not the first
00:06thing that came to me what came to me was a short film script um and that was something paul hunter
00:14had written and i found out it was based on his life growing up um in in the valley in the 60s
00:21and 70s and the thing that hit me is exactly the thing that hit you and the word that you
00:27uh describe it as unique i just hadn't read anything quite like this before i hadn't had
00:33the opportunity to play a character quite like this before i hadn't seen a black family of this
00:38nature on screen before but i was able to relate to elements of it the quirkiness of the family is
00:45something i could definitely relate to my family being a father of four and and uh my my wife and
00:51i having these extraordinary kids that we have being a father who wants the best for his family
00:57knowing that i am a very fallible individual knowing that i have my own relationship with god and and how
01:04that relationship plays out so i had my versions of some of the themes that were in in this story
01:11but to see it in this fantastical surreal absurdist way but also set in the 60s a time where we often
01:19are steeped in civil rights and racial struggle but none of that is part of the equation there
01:24were just so many things that were both fresh and familiar about it but overridingly
01:29as you say it was just so very unique
