00:00Well, we have had just bitter cold and dangerous cold conditions the last
00:04couple of weeks this weekend. No exception. So we've been talking a lot
00:08about AccuWeather real field temperatures. It's what it actually feels
00:12like outside, not just the air temperature. And I wanted to talk a
00:14little bit about what goes into that, but also what you should be doing
00:18during extreme cold like this. So temperature is certainly a factor,
00:23obviously, and you've probably heard of wind chill. That's where wind speed
00:26goes into things. But we go a step further. We're talking about cloud cover.
00:30We're talking about dew point, precipitation, sun angle. That all
00:35impacts what it actually feels like outside and gets us our AccuWeather real
00:40feel temperature. So let's dive into why wind is such a component. And this
00:45weekend, wind really is going to be the issue in the northeast, though other
00:49factors, of course, are going to contribute. So when conditions are
00:53calm, we don't really have a lot of wind, you have body heat that is keeping
00:58you warm. It stays put. It's not lost. Versus when it's windy, your body heat
01:04escapes. The wind picks up, your body heat escapes, and then you feel colder. Now,
01:11what do you do when it is cold like this? Well, it depends on how cold. When we're
01:15between 10 and 24 degrees, anyone who's at risk, older adults, infants, those with
01:20sensitive medical conditions, that's who should be limiting your time outside. And
01:23of course, everyone should be dressing appropriately. Make sure your hat, gloves,
01:26whatever you need, a coat when you do have to spend time outside. But when we get
01:30down below zero, especially into just dangerous, dangerous cold, 25 to 43 degrees
01:37below zero, that's when frostbite really is an issue and hypothermia as well.
01:42So how quickly that sets in depends on how cold it is. 15 minutes frostbite can set in
01:47with nine degrees to 10 below zero.
