00:00all right we got some breaking news that's going to shock up the hockey world rangers just traded
00:06our timmy panarin to to the kings for liam greentree and a conditional third round pick
00:11so let's break it all down with our rangers beat writer for the post molly walker molly you were
00:17just in studio with us they could have done this about an hour ago but it's all good can you give
00:22us everything you know about this trade break it down for us and what was your instant reaction
00:28yeah a lot of build up to this moment and it definitely came right down to the wire with
00:34the olympic freeze coming into effect at 3 p.m the trade came out almost on the dot so the rangers
00:41were finally able to to trade artemi panarin to the kings in exchange for a right wing prospect in
00:46liam greentree a conditional third rounder in this year's draft that can become a second if the kings
00:52win one playoff round and it would be the better of the kings two thirds and if the kings win two
00:58playoff rounds the rangers will also get a fourth round pick in 2028 the rangers also had to retain
01:0450 percent of panarin's salary to facilitate the deal all right so you broke down you know some of
01:11the picks that they're going to get but who exactly is liam greentree what are the rangers getting
01:17and are they getting enough yeah greentree was the king's 26th overall pick in 2024 he's a six foot
01:25three right winger who the rangers identified as one of the top prospects in the king's organization
01:30he said to have a high iq he's currently playing for the windsor spitfires in the ontario hockey league
01:36and he has 23 goals and 22 assists in 34 games so far this season so obviously he's he's the key piece
01:44in this trade and it was tough obviously because so many teams checked in on panarin naturally he's
01:50one of the biggest free agent guys available so it felt like half the league was linked to him at one
01:55point or another in recent weeks but at the end of the day i was told los angeles is where he wanted to go
02:00and and that was the team the rangers had to work with so obviously the no move clause is is serious
02:05leverage for players and i think that this was on display here he moved on to the california post now
02:11you know um so what's this mean for him though like can you think he can elevate la to be a cup
02:17contender i think he would elevate any team that he went to to be a cup cup contender um i like the
02:25move for the kings 100 i mean he is just such a dynamic scoring winger for any team that he would
02:30have gone to um it sounds like a an extension is being worked on at this very moment and that is
02:37obviously a huge part of the deal that was important to our timmy to get this done um but
02:43it's a it's a huge game for for the kings and a major loss for the rangers obviously but it got to
02:49a point where rangers had to make a move knowing that they weren't going to extend him for themselves
02:55so you don't want to let a player like that walk uh at the end of this season for nothing so at the
03:00very least he was definitely going to be on the move before the trade deadline but i think the
03:04rangers wanted it all panned out before going into the olympic break and and now they get that
03:09all right another key piece to this core that i feel like you know i fell in love with when i
03:14started really paying attention to the rangers uh what does this mean or what does this tell you
03:20about the future of the franchise well it's uh looking a little interesting at the moment
03:27obviously they're trying to retool after making that announcement a little bit ago that that was the
03:32direction that the team was going to go in for the remainder of this season and that kind of
03:36indicated to the rest of the nhl that they are open for business and i don't think that artemi
03:41panarin is the last player we see to leave here um i do think that braden schneider and vincent
03:47trocek are two big trade pieces for the rangers that they would like to see if they could get anything
03:51for um it's it's a bit of uh uncertainty right now for the rangers and the direction and a lot of it is
03:58going to depend on what president and general manager chris jury is able to accomplish uh between now and
04:06the start of next season we know about bread man the player but what about him the personality you've
04:14covered this team for a while now you're around the guys you know on the road in the locker rooms what
04:19what what did artemi panarin you know mean to this team and what was he like you know over the years
04:24with you covering him it's a major loss for us on the media front that's for sure uh artemi panarin
04:31was always around and and willing to talk and always gave honest upfront answers but at the same time
04:38he was he is one of the most fun players to be around in the national hockey league i think
04:43uh he never takes anything too seriously and he's always so quick with a joke to make any situation
04:49feel a little bit more lighthearted that's just the artemi apparent artemi panarin effect and i think
04:55that he's had that on this team and on this city since he was a free agent signing in 2019 so we're all
05:02going to miss him around here that's for sure and especially us on the media front it's a big loss for
05:07us huge loss molly thank you uh for being available at such a short notice thanks for having me
