00:00How are you feeling?
00:01I'm feeling overwhelmed a little bit.
00:05It's a lot.
00:07I'm representing a beautiful tribute to Chadwick Boseman.
00:11I'm representing a lot of artists.
00:14I'm representing a lot of hard work and dedication.
00:19I'm representing a picture that we didn't know whether it was going to be done or not.
00:24So it's mixed emotions, but I'm happy to be here.
00:28And you might make history tonight as the second, I mean, the first black woman.
00:34I'm right here because I'm going to knock on it.
00:35I'm going to knock on it.
00:36Okay, you can.
00:37Because I'm not superstitious and I feel honored to even possibly be that for the culture.
00:48The possibility is actually rewarding because we all don't make it here.
00:55And I want to show any young costume designer that you can make it here.
01:02You can make it here, just like I did.
01:05Did you see anyone doing what you wanted to do when you were aspiring to be a costume designer?
01:10Well, you know, I had different mentors.
01:12You know, I would say Spike Lee was a mentor.
01:15You know, he told me a lot about, you know, the film industry.
01:18I came out of theater, and also I looked at the films that I liked, and then I looked up the designer.
01:25I started with the film, and it didn't matter what color the designer was.
01:29I wanted to know her process or his process because I wanted to do a film like that, like Places in the Heart, and Ann Roth was one of them.
01:37Okay.
01:37What would you say is the belief, the prayer, the practice, anything that has gotten you to this moment?
01:45I believe in humility because I feel like when I woosah and I kind of, like, ground myself that more comes in.
01:58I understand things better.
02:00I feel like if I keep thinking, I want to do something great, you know, I'm a little too hyper, you know, and that closes the door.
02:10It closes the mind.
02:12So I feel like my creative process really does start with meditation and humility because I want to ask God for his grace and bringing in some ideas.
02:25I need some ideas, God.
02:28I hear that.
02:29Yes.
02:30I didn't mean to get religious on you, but.
02:32No, I needed that.
02:33Okay.
02:35Well, you know we are rooting for you, but also hope you just have a fun night.
02:38I'm going to have fun.
02:39I'm playing on it.
02:40This is a fun night anyway with the Vanity Fair party and then the Gold Party, so, and the Governor's Ball.
02:47I know, yes.
02:48The good food at the Governor's Ball.
02:49See, I'm ready for that.
02:51Can we skip over this part?
02:52I'm with you.
02:53Okay, okay.
02:54I'll see you.
