Zendaya opens up about her role as Tashi Duncan, a tennis player turned coach, in her latest film 'Challengers.'
Transcript
00:00Tashi is a departure from a lot of characters we've seen you play before and for one we see her
00:04from childhood to adulthood and it's our first time seeing you in your 30s it's our first time
00:09seeing you as a mom so I'm kind of curious how you were able to kind of strike those nuances
00:14while still showing her as a dynamic powerhouse personality from being 17-18 to being 30-31.
00:22Um yeah you know it's interesting I think uh for me it's kind of a luxury to be able to like carry a
00:30character through time because it means you don't have to create a backstory for them you already know
00:35where they were and what happened to them and how they got the way they are um and so for me it was
00:42just about tracking emotionally who she is um and where she's at um and what that injury does to her
00:50and what as she old as she's older what what there's like a when they're younger there's a
00:57certain level of of levity and and joy there's like a sparkle you know what I mean that over time
01:04fades and and becomes jaded and becomes um desperate to just hold on to whatever she can
01:13and keep her her her life together um and this composure or this idea of a false composure maybe
01:21that she's portraying to to other people because I think she she's responsible being a coach being
01:26you know this um having all these these duties being a coach a mother you know whatever a business
01:33woman she just she feels like she doesn't have the time to wallow in her own self-pity or her own pain
01:41um which I'm sure is an experience many women specifically black women face right um and so
01:48she just pivots and and and pushes and pushes forward and we see through that pushing the cracks are starting
01:56to form
