00:00Hello and welcome to another episode of Shop Essence Live.
00:05You guys know what time it is.
00:06Every single week we're getting closer and closer to the holidays.
00:11We just entered the month of December.
00:13It's the last month of the year.
00:15Crazy.
00:16So, in this episode we're going to feature two incredible Black-owned businesses
00:23in partnership with our New Voices family.
00:25I want y'all to tag someone that has curly hair, take care of their hair at home, right?
00:33We got Glow By Day that is going to, hey J-Bowley, we got Glow By Day that's going to hook up
00:39our curls.
00:41Raise your hand the last time, if the last time you had a deep conditioner was a long time
00:45ago, drop a heart in there and it's because it takes too long.
00:49Glow By Day has a solution for us.
00:50Also, if you got kids, if you got nieces, nephews, grandkids, and you want to get them
00:57something meaningful for Christmas that'll help them celebrate their heritage, we have
01:02something really special from Little Griot coming up in 15 minutes.
01:05But up first, Renee Orton from Glow By Day is going to tag, and I used it y'all.
01:11Tell me, how the curl's looking?
01:13How the curl's looking?
01:14Okay, so I used the products and I cannot wait to get into shopping these incredible products.
01:21Renee, I see you out there.
01:22I'm going to add you.
01:24Please do keep following because I'll let you know how you can potentially be a part
01:28of Shop Essence Live.
01:30We're here every Thursday shopping these brands.
01:33Hey, Renee.
01:34Hey, how's it going?
01:37It's going amazing.
01:38And it's going even more amazing now that I treated myself to a luxurious deep condition.
01:44It's so, so great.
01:48And yes, I don't want to keep it to myself.
01:51I need everybody to know how incredible these products are that you have created.
01:56Can you tell us a little bit about your journey and how you came up with this incredible line
02:00that we all need?
02:02Oh, wow.
02:04Well, thank you so much for having me.
02:05I'm so excited to be here.
02:07You know, it's always so fun talking to what I consider my tribe, the people that I feel
02:12like I made the product for, which mirrors myself.
02:16Um, but yeah, like the beginning of Glow By Day starts when I just remember having an
02:23aha moment.
02:23I looked to the left.
02:24I was breastfeeding my newborn son, but you're just kind of in that disheveled state, you
02:29know, you're just trying to figure out life.
02:31And I had braids in at the time.
02:33I remember me just having the bonnet that I would wear just constantly for years, the
02:39type of bonnet you just get at the store, $2.99, boom.
02:42And I just remember my hair just falling out.
02:44My braids just falling.
02:45Yeah.
02:45And I was in a state of just like, come on, let me get my life.
02:49And then just the one bonnet that you've always been, you've always had, just can't do its
02:55one job, right?
02:56And just a whole chain.
02:58Can we talk?
02:59Can we talk about it?
03:01Um, and that was really like the impetus to Glow By Day.
03:05I didn't know it at the time, but for me, I just thought it was really beneficial to
03:10have something that was made for people like myself who have births to hairstyles, ever-changing
03:18hair lengths and volumes.
03:20I mean, I go in and out of extensions.
03:22My career hair is big and wild.
03:24And so I just wanted something to sleep in at night that could protect it through all its,
03:29through all its seasons, right?
03:32And can we just, I want to get into this bonnet because the pure genius-ness.
03:38Ladies, please drop some emoji in the comments.
03:42If you go to sleep with a bonnet and you wake up and you're like, where?
03:46I found mine like at the door, across the room, under the pillow, on my husband's side of the bed.
03:52Like, what is going on?
03:53Hey, right.
03:54Listen, your bonnet, and it seems so like, yeah, why didn't I think of that?
03:59But your bonnet is so special.
04:01Can you tell everyone what makes your bonnet special?
04:04Yeah, you know, and that's the crazy part.
04:07And that's why I always tell people, it's like, I'm looking for an idea.
04:10I'm looking, I mean, it's always, you don't really have to invent the wheel.
04:14Sometimes it's just about reinventing the wheel and tweaking it and creating nuance about it
04:20that is reflective of what you need, right?
04:23So for me, it was adding those little touches, like the fabrication.
04:29So one of the things that bugs me about the bonnet that I had been using for years
04:32was, like, they use satin, and satin is a weave.
04:35We get it.
04:35Like, it's not always going to be like the silky smooth.
04:38But for me, I thought, you know, I want my hair to be, I want it to slide.
04:46I don't want it to be, you know, you want to get away from the friction,
04:50to reduce the frizz, to retain your moisture.
04:53And so I wanted a high-grade fabrication.
04:55It was really important for me also to have an adjustability feature, right?
05:02Like, for me, it's about, I go in and out of styles.
05:06Can it fit when I have my box brace in, as well as when I have my hair twisted out in a big fro?
05:12And so adjustability, also the reversibility, giving you options, you know,
05:17depending on what you're feeling like.
05:18If you're feeling like a print, if you're feeling like a solid,
05:20just giving the people some options in one.
05:25And the drawstring!
05:26The drawstring, yes.
05:28That dress is on.
05:31It's just, it's small nuances that I think make a big difference in the quality of,
05:37you know, your sleep, you know, because you do get affected when you wake up
05:42and what's, because your hair is, you're like, oh, shoot, let me get back.
05:45So it's, they're small scales, but I think they make a world of difference
05:53when it comes to, you know, your, your hair care regimen
05:56and just keeping it simple and convenient, but yet effective, right?
06:00So all the things, all the things.
06:02So, so good.
06:04And I see the comments going crazy.
06:05Remember, we are live, live for a reason.
06:07So if you have any comments here for Renee, make sure that you hit me up
06:13and I am looking, I'm looking at your questions.
06:15What was the next thing?
06:17What was that?
06:19What's the next thing you want to highlight, Renee?
06:21Okay.
06:21Oh, yes.
06:22So that's our bond.
06:23This is kind of like where our start, the story of Glow By Day began.
06:26It started with this, but what I recognized was that, oh, wow, like this is,
06:32I had really good feedback from the very beginning.
06:34And I thought, you know, there are a ton of products, I believe,
06:37especially in the accessory space.
06:39I think we've come so long in the actual like creams and butters
06:42and actual product that we put on our hair.
06:44But the accessory space, I feel like it's lagging, right?
06:46Like we want products that kind of are, that fit well,
06:52that also have a durability with it that can stand the test of time, right?
06:58Right.
06:58So other thing that kind of just, you know, as we, as we wanted to serve the community
07:05more that we were, you know, starting with, with our bonnets, I was like, shower cap.
07:10Yes.
07:10Come on, shower cap.
07:12And that, the shower cap game was so weak, especially when you go into the store.
07:16The, the, the, of it, just the thinness.
07:22And so, blow by day came out.
07:23What was that?
07:24A satin line.
07:26Come on.
07:27Can we say that again?
07:28This is a satin lined shower cap, y'all.
07:33And it still has the jaw, drawstring on it as well.
07:36It still has the drawstring.
07:37And I can fit my whole fro in it.
07:40That, that was like the, the space inside was so important to me because for the life
07:49of me, I was just like, why can't, and it's still not overbearing.
07:53Like I, I tried a few and you had some, thank you so much for putting it on Stephanie.
07:58You look so good.
07:58Listen, I go all laugh.
08:00No, I love it.
08:02And I feel confident in putting it on because I know because it's satin line when I take
08:07it off, curls are still going to be intact and popping.
08:11I love it.
08:12Yes.
08:13So this was, this was to me a game changer.
08:17I feel like it's, it's even more universal than the satin bonnets as I feel like, okay,
08:22yes, bonnets.
08:24I feel like traditionally a black woman's thing, but the, the shower cap was a game changer for
08:29our business because I feel like it crossed over into so many other ethnicities that that's
08:34such a staple product.
08:36Yeah.
08:36But they do have struggles with it, you know, their long, thick hair, like you could not
08:40fit it in those standard, you know, $3 bonnets that you would get.
08:46Oh, yeah.
08:48So.
08:49And this will last.
08:51Yes.
08:51It's, yeah, this, this is one that should last you for a while.
08:55So that's why we have different colors.
08:57So you can always kind of switch it up.
09:00And this is our newest collection.
09:02So that's why I wanted to feature.
09:04I love it.
09:04This is Crystal Constellation.
09:07I just love this.
09:08Oh, vibies.
09:10It has such a good energy about it.
09:12All right.
09:13So I see perfect imperfections.
09:15Perfect question to lead us into the next product.
09:17They said, should you put conditioner on your hair before putting the satin line bonnet on?
09:22But I believe you have something else.
09:26I have something else.
09:27You can definitely condition with this.
09:29And this is a perfect option.
09:30And I love the fact that it's reversible.
09:32So if you didn't want to put it on with the satin.
09:34Oh, it's reversible.
09:35See, I didn't even know.
09:36I didn't even know it was reversible.
09:37You can do it over and then you have, and that helps hold the moisture in a little bit more while you're conditioning.
09:43So if you wanted to do it overnight or something, you could do that.
09:46But if you really want to get into deep conditioning.
09:49Yes.
09:49I also came up with RV conditioning heat cap.
09:53This is genius.
09:55Okay.
09:56I'm going to let you go.
09:57I'm going to let you go.
09:58But.
09:58No.
10:01Again, I feel like one of the things I'm considered a lazy natural.
10:06I don't really necessarily love doing my hair regimen.
10:10Wait, there's a name for us?
10:13Yes.
10:14A part of that club.
10:16Lazy natural.
10:17Okay.
10:17Yeah.
10:18You love your versatility.
10:19You love your curls.
10:21You love the texture.
10:21It's just like, oh, especially when you get and you see it this way.
10:24It's beautiful.
10:25But it's maintenance.
10:27It's work.
10:28It's a job.
10:29And also for some of us that are just, I mean, and I say this, I mean, I didn't grow up wearing my hair natural.
10:36So it's a process of learning how to do different styles and all these things.
10:42So deep conditioning is such a major component of having healthy, natural texture hair.
10:48Because of the way our hair is cooled and curled retention.
10:52So deep conditioning is also going to be key.
10:55And this deep conditioning heat cap makes it a little bit more convenient for you.
10:59You pop it in the microwave for about two minutes.
11:03It emits because it's filled with a natural flax seed that really holds.
11:10Oh, it's in there.
11:11Oh, that's nice.
11:14It's a flower seed that is really great at holding heat.
11:19So it emits 20 to 30 minutes of portable heat.
11:23You plop it on your head.
11:25Not plop, but you place it on your head.
11:28It does come with 10 complimentary plastic caps.
11:31So it helps you to keep it clean and dry.
11:33That was great.
11:34And you can go about your business.
11:37Go about your days.
11:38Go wash your dishes.
11:39This is what I love about this.
11:43Because I, as many of you are watching mom's full careers, I don't have time to do deep
11:50conditioner.
11:51And then I'm going to sit under a dryer or sit there and dry my hair, you know, blow dry
11:55my hair to get that real deep conditioning.
11:58It was never an option for me.
12:01And when I tell you this is such a game changer, because I was able to, you know, condition my
12:06hair in the shower, put this on, put this in the microwave, two minutes, 30 seconds at
12:12a time, turn it.
12:14And it's got weight to it, but it doesn't feel heavy.
12:18It kind of just feels like your head has a hug for a little bit.
12:22And then I just, I went to work.
12:24I had my meetings, I had my Zoom calls, camera off, camera off.
12:27We ain't going to have the bonnet on the Zoom call.
12:30But I had my meetings, half an hour, and then wash it out.
12:33And then luxury, luxurious, like really nice condition.
12:39Your curls and put it as ads.
12:41But this is, so I had a question about this cap.
12:47And please, if you guys have any questions, I am watching the comments.
12:51This is great.
12:52And I see y'all adding it to the cart.
12:54Listen, if this ain't for you, you know there's somebody in your life that would absolutely
12:58love this collection.
12:59So I definitely encourage you, if you're just joining now, this is Shop Essence Live, where
13:04we go live every single week, bringing you new female Black-owned businesses, where you
13:09can shop in partnership with the New Voices family.
13:12And I want you guys to remember, every time you buy here, you're buying straight from Renee.
13:16You're buying straight from Glow By Day.
13:19So definitely do support.
13:21And these are products that are just incredible.
13:24And the way that we think about problems and solve them ourselves, like, come on, sis, you
13:29got a cape.
13:30Okay.
13:30So I had a question.
13:34How do you care for this?
13:36Like, can you put this in the washer?
13:39Like, how can you clean it?
13:41Great question.
13:42So do not put this in the washer.
13:45Okay.
13:45I'm glad I asked.
13:46But because it's filled with that flaxseed, and the outside is not, you can't really take
13:56it off.
13:57All we do is, I mean, it's really easy.
14:00We've had so many customers have theirs.
14:02And I hate to promote it like this, but it is the truth.
14:05Like, people have had theirs for years, honestly.
14:07We recommend, you know, you swap it out yearly just because of the seeds, just wear and tear,
14:12depending on how often you use it.
14:14But it's really easy to just spot clean those disposable plastic caps that come with it.
14:22You put that one in before you put it on to keep it dry, but it also helps to hold the
14:27moisture in while you're conditioning.
14:29And so we always just say, like, just lightly spot clean when needed.
14:33You really...
14:34Yeah.
14:34Okay.
14:35That makes sense.
14:35You want to make sure to just spot clean right after you're done.
14:39If you get any conditioner, like, little spots on there, just, like, wipe it off.
14:43And by the time...
14:44The next time, it's going to be dry.
14:45So you should be fine there.
14:48But that's a great question, and it's one of the most commonly asked questions that we
14:51have.
14:51On the tag here, I think it does just say spot clean.
14:55Okay.
14:56Good.
14:57See, I don't like to be reading instructions.
14:58You know what I'm saying?
14:59Reason straight.
15:00Not only am I lazy, I'm lazy natural.
15:03I don't read no instructions.
15:04Okay.
15:05So, plain complexity.
15:09All right.
15:10See the oxymoron name.
15:12How hot does it get, and is it safe for children?
15:14That is a very great question, because I was definitely using this on my daughter.
15:17So let us know.
15:19You know, you can definitely use it on your children.
15:21We have gotten so many pictures and videos of little ones using it.
15:26And as long as, you know, you just touch tests and make sure that they're fine with the
15:30temperature, it doesn't get extremely hot.
15:32And that's what I love about it, though, because it's a gentle heat, because it's natural.
15:36It doesn't...
15:37It's not something you're plugging in.
15:39It's cordless.
15:40Yes.
15:40And it's also...
15:41It's natural.
15:42So it's almost like old school, where you used to lay, you know, your menstrual cramps,
15:47you would get, like, a flaxseed.
15:48Well, you had the hot water.
15:49Yeah.
15:51It's really similar.
15:52But it doesn't get as...
15:53I mean, like, my mom used to have, like, the plastic one, where it can get hot.
15:57And they do have plastic hard material.
16:00The ones that, like, blow steam into it, that can...
16:03Yeah.
16:04And since it has a soft material as well, it does also lessen the touch, the heat, the
16:10touch of it.
16:11So it makes it much more safe for children to use as well, because of the gentleness of...
16:18Yeah, this definitely...
16:20It wasn't like I took it out of the microwave, and it was like, ah, you're kind of controlling
16:24it, too, because you're the one that's heating it up, and you can take it.
16:28It was just like putting a warm towel around your head, really.
16:32I see Tickle Pink.
16:33She said, imagine being able to deep condition with heat while moving freely in your home.
16:38That is what I'm talking about.
16:40This product, so incredible.
16:42Gives you freedom, but gives you the luxury of being in a salon with a nice, deep condition.
16:48But it just came out of your microwave, just like that.
16:50So, so great.
16:52And you did mention earlier, Renee, we talked about being a part of the New Voices family.
16:59I'd love to hear from you on what has been one of the major benefits to being a...
17:04Somebody just purchased...
17:06Okay, sorry.
17:08What has been the major benefit to being a part of the New Voices family?
17:12Oh, wow.
17:13Like, for me, thinking about New Voices, I mean, you know, it's New Voices family.
17:19And I always have to think, so many, like, organizations put family in there.
17:25But, like, New Voices is legit a family.
17:28And, like, I almost get emotional thinking about New Voices and how they've been in the
17:32past few years.
17:34Like, the most important things that come to mind when I think about New Voices and when
17:38I try and tell people about it is, you know, A, they're really focused on, and something
17:45that is very challenging in this space is being a female entrepreneur or a Black female
17:49entrepreneur is money.
17:50Like, capital.
17:51Like, the opportunities that I've been able to...
17:54I've been blessed to be able to have some great opportunities, have some grant opportunities
18:00with them over the past few years has really helped to elevate, as I've grown in the past
18:05couple years.
18:07Number two is, like, education.
18:08Like, the resources are bar not amazing because they have the connections.
18:15They have...
18:16They are able to open up doors that otherwise would be really hard to get into.
18:20And they're able to help support you and educate what you need, right?
18:25Like, for me, that's everything.
18:28So, they put their money where their mouth is, but they also are kind of telling us the
18:32game.
18:32They're giving us the game, right?
18:34And that's what I just really love about this family.
18:39And lastly, I think, which is really the most important, is the connections.
18:43Like, the community, you know, we are, and I say we, myself, as a solo founder, sometimes
18:51I can feel very siloed, and I feel isolated because you're trying to build something, you're
18:56trying to, you know, gain momentum, and it can be very lonely sometimes.
19:01And what New Voices has been able to offer is, since the community of women or people that
19:06look like you that have similar challenges or experiences, whether it be a Black woman or
19:12a mom or just, you know, all these different facets that make up this really unique experience
19:19that we're on.
19:20It's just that connection.
19:22I know I can pick up the phone or Slack someone that's either, you know, where I want to be
19:27or some milestone that I want to achieve.
19:29And they are so willing to help me.
19:32And so, that community is everything.
19:35And so, that's why I know somebody, like, starting a business or thinking about starting a
19:39business, I just try and point them to New Voices because the resources are just overwhelming.
19:45And that is the key.
19:47Thank you so much, Renee, for sharing that because there are a lot of people, often I
19:51see them in the comments, aspiring.
19:54You never know who is watching right now, who is sitting on that million-dollar idea that
20:00they just don't know what the next step is that they should take.
20:03There is something available to you.
20:05Just take, sorry, just take a chance on yourself, okay?
20:10Right.
20:10No, I do.
20:11We're going to wrap up now because I do have to get to Marissa of Little Griot to get to
20:17this line for the little ones.
20:18But you, this line is so incredible.
20:21I see that there have been a lot of purchases going through.
20:25We love that here at Shop Essence Live.
20:27Again, we are live every single Thursday.
20:29Next week, we have a special episode where we're going live on Tuesday with multiple
