As Black women continue to soar in various fields, representation in sports is steadily on the rise. From Serena Williams to Simone Biles, Black women are breaking barriers and setting a new standard. During this year’s Super Bowl Sunday, ESSENCE held the inaugural Black Women In Sports Brunch in Inglewood. Presented by Coca-Cola® and hosted by Gia Peppers, the event honored sports journalists Cari Champion and Jemele Hill with additional remarks from ESSENCE CEO Caroline Wanga and Chairman of ESSENCE Ventures, Richelieu Dennis.

00:00So today is Super Bowl Sunday, so that's everything, right?
00:03That trumps everything.
00:04And before the concert and football game, I'm being honored by Essence for Black women in sports.
00:12For me, that is arguably the biggest honor because Essence is for us.
00:17And it's always beautiful to be celebrated by us.
00:19In a world where oftentimes we don't feel seen, I feel seen by you all.
00:25It's for us, it's about us, it's unapologetic, and look, Black is beautiful.
00:31I threw in this dress, you think it's okay?
00:33You look okay.
00:34I look okay.
00:35Decent.
00:35A little something I found.
00:37Because guess who's getting honored today?
00:39Me!
00:40Something about this award feels different in terms of getting it with my really good friend.
00:45I think this award is about two friends who have known each other for a very long time,
00:49who have supported each other, been through a lot publicly and privately,
00:53and we're being rewarded for just holding it down and holding each other up.
00:56You know what I mean?
00:57God is good.
00:58I feel good.
