00:00The biggest thing for me being in men's space is my appearance.
00:04I do want them to know that I'm a woman.
00:06I'm not trying to look like them.
00:08I'm not trying to be one of them.
00:10And even when I played with men, you know, my little outfits was hooked up.
00:14My shoestrings were matching.
00:16I got a ribbon in my hair.
00:17Because I never wanted someone to walk in the gym and go, like, oh, there's 10 men out there.
00:20Like, oh, wait.
00:21Like, one of them, who's that girl?
00:23You know?
00:24So I like that.
00:25I'm okay with that.
00:26That's me being my authentic self.
00:27And I think, you know, I like fashion.
00:36Talking about people talking trash and stuff on social, like, how do you stay calm in the midst of that?
00:42And, like, what's your approach?
00:43I usually never address anybody speaking negatively.
00:48Because I don't believe in putting that in my universe.
00:50I really don't.
00:50I'm like, I'm cool.
00:52I'm good.
00:52But if it's not, like, my mom, my sister, or my husband telling me something that's, like, really, like, you shouldn't have done that or you shouldn't have said that, then I'm good.
01:00But when it comes to, like, entertaining people with negativity, everybody has an opinion.
01:04Social media is really giving everybody an opinion.
01:06And you can't get caught up in that.
01:08And, I mean, I'm like, I'm not like, I'm like everybody else who, you know, you see comments, you read through.
01:14And it's just, like, some stuff I just deleted off my page.
01:16Yeah.
01:16And just keep it moving.
01:18You know, I'm not really, like, going through, like, blocking and all that.
01:21I don't really get a lot of negative feedback.
01:25Good.
01:26Which is also good.
01:27But I think through social media, people get a really good chance, a good feel for you and your spirit and how you move.
01:34Yeah.
01:35Based on how you post also.
01:36Yeah.
01:37So, I try to keep it positive, keep moving.
01:39I don't address negative stuff at all.
01:40Okay.
01:41And then what about being a woman in this space?
01:43You know, we know, you know, the opportunities are there in WNBA and all of the space for women.
01:49But it's still, you know, interesting to be a woman coaching a group of men.
01:53Yeah.
01:53You know, what was it like coming into that space and how were you received by your team?
01:57You know, it's so interesting because I only get reminded that we're different when, one, when it's obviously time for my guys to change clothes in the locker room.
02:06Okay.
02:07And I'm like, oh, I'll be back.
02:09Let me step out.
02:10You know what I mean?
02:11Or if I have to use the restroom and they are, like, already in there and I'm like, we only got one bathroom.
02:15I'm like, fellas, I'm coming in.
02:17Like, you know, I got to go.
02:18So, it's like those moments where, you know, I'm reminded, like, oh, I'm a woman and this is their space.
02:24Yeah.
02:24And then the second time is only in media.
02:27Like, people ask me the question about being a woman.
02:29I'm like, oh, what about it?
02:31Yeah.
02:32Because it really is basketball.
02:34And it's just, we all play this sport at such a high level.
02:39And after a while, it's like screens and picks and rolls and certain strategies that we all know.
02:43And then it's hard effort and fight.
02:44And I don't got nothing to do with being a woman or a man.
02:47You know what I mean?
02:47You either come in or you're mentally strong about it or you're not.
02:50Yeah.
02:50Some people are, you know, you can tell certain people's weaknesses, whether it's men or women.
02:55And sometimes it's so interesting.
02:56I see the men almost like I see my son.
02:59And not necessarily from an age standpoint, but they're like, you know, men act like little boys sometimes.
03:04Like, when they, like, we call it grab-assing.
03:06You know, when they're just playing around.
03:07They're joking.
03:08They're teasing each other.
03:09They're clowning.
03:10That's the space that we all miss the most that don't play anymore is this, the locker room camaraderie.
03:17Yeah.
03:18And that's the space you love.
03:20And I think that's what they're getting also from being in the big three when we're on the bus.
03:24You know, them talking about people's waves and who here are the funny and all the stuff that they talk about.
03:29I kind of sometimes just tune out and let them have their moment without feeling like, oh, there's a woman present and you need to be super respectful.
03:36Like, I'm not really on that.
03:38Okay.
03:38Probably because I played with NBA men all the time.
03:42Magic Johnson allowed me to practice with those guys and I never wanted them to feel like they have to be like, oh, sorry, you know, excuse me, Liz, you know.
03:52Yeah.
03:52I don't do that because I'm in their space and it's cool.
03:55Let them talk about what they want to talk about and how they want to say it.
03:58Yeah.
03:58And the biggest thing for me being in men's space is my appearance.
04:03I do want them to know that I'm a woman.
04:05I'm not trying to look like them.
04:07Yeah.
04:08I'm not trying to be one of them.
04:09Yeah.
04:10And even when I played with men, you know, my little outfits was hooked up.
04:13Yeah.
04:14You know, my shoestrings was matching.
04:15I got ribbon in my hair.
04:16Yeah.
04:17Because I never wanted someone to walk in the gym and go like, oh, it's 10 men out there.
04:20Like, oh, wait.
04:21Like, one of them, who's that girl?
04:23You know?
04:23Yeah.
04:24So, I like that.
04:25I'm okay with that.
04:25That's me being my authentic self.
04:27Yeah.
04:27And I think, you know, I like fashion.
04:30Yeah.
04:30And I'm going to say it right there because you told us your secret because I saw your complexion when you came in.
04:35What's the secret?
04:36What's your go-to?
04:37My go-to?
04:38Well, I have a few go-tos.
04:40Okay.
04:40Because my skincare go-to is Rodanifils, which I use.
04:45I know that's a product that's a little bit more on the expensive side, but it really does work.
04:49I love that because I don't have, like, problem with acne or anything, but just keeping your skin clear and young, using my serums and things like that, doing my scrubs every – I don't do scrubs too often.
05:02I think some people can over-exfoliate, and we really don't need that.
05:06And so unless you have, like, really problems with, like, you know, blemishes or things – yeah, so I only exfoliate probably every other month.
05:14Okay.
05:15It's not – I don't do a whole – you don't need that.
05:20And so that's what I do.
05:22And then I love, love Bobbi Brown makeup, which I use that foundation.
05:29Yeah, that's one of my favorites.
05:30But I did have a makeup artist today.
05:32Okay.
05:33Come in.
05:33Shout out to Tasha Phillips, who hooked me up.
05:35So, yeah, because I love when they do my makeup.
05:37It's just better.
05:38No matter how much – how many YouTube videos I watch and stuff, my eyebrows be crooked.
05:42I'm like, I cannot get it.
05:44So, yeah, she came in and did my makeup.
05:47Okay.
05:48So switching back to basketball, because I believe you also coached the WNBA All-Stars to a victory very recently.
05:55So tell me, what – you know, what's your philosophy as a coach?
05:58What's your secret sauce to these wins you keep racking up?
06:01You know, for me, I think you have to meet players where they are.
06:04I'm not trying to come in and be a dictator when it comes to coaching.
06:08I believe that players have specific individual goals that they want for themselves.
06:14Me, it's sort of like I try to come in and get that interpersonal relationship to understand what they want to do.
06:20And then how do we hold them accountable to what they said they wanted to do?
06:24Because to understand what those goals are, it takes hard work and effort, right?
06:29And so you have to make those sacrifices.
06:31So if I have a practice, you should probably be at that practice because this is what you wanted to do to reach that goal, right?
06:37And then here are some little tips.
06:39And I just try to give tips.
06:40I like to not come in like, oh, I taught these players.
06:43No, I'm just coming in.
06:45It's almost just as if a makeup artist is helping me with my makeup.
06:48She may not teach me how to do my makeup, but she may give me a tip that could help me be more successful at getting my eyebrows to be even.
06:56You know what I'm saying?
06:57Or putting my lashes on, which is a whole other, you know.
07:01So I feel like I come in like that professional that is not here to teach you how to play.
07:07No, I'm just here to give you a little bit of a tip, a little bit of what would I do in that moment.
07:12You know, and for example, in our game, we started to settle for shots and they weren't really falling.
07:18But my thing is, why not attack the basket and get to the free throw line?
07:21Like, you see that we're not shooting well.
07:24Here's another idea of what we can do.
07:25Am I teaching them that?
07:26No, but it's just dropping it in.
07:28And I think the other secret for me, which is not really a secret, is you have to be able to inspire and motivate people, right?
07:35So especially with the new generation, me coaching the WNBA All-Star, these young girls are fiery.
07:40They're young, they got this music playing.
07:43You know, one minute I'm in the huddle.
07:44I'm like trying to get them hyped because I know that they're like, oh, okay, coaches, cool.
07:49Like, let's go.
07:50But I'm still like, now if I can go rebound, you know what I mean?
07:53But that's how I have to meet them, you know.
07:55So I think it's important not to come in with like, this is how we did it.
07:59This is the old school.
08:00Like, no, we got to be flexible.
08:02The game has evolved.
08:04And we as coaches have to evolve with the game and meet these young people where they are.
08:08So I think it's key to be able to inspire and motivate, you know, not coming in and talking about what I did.
08:13Yeah.
08:14What's that going to do for them?
08:15They're just going to be looking like, yeah, okay.
08:18You know, but I'm not going to come in with that.
08:19I'm going to come in like, what's up?
08:22I'm like, I like your game.
08:23You know, I watched you.
08:24I'm really proud of you.
08:27Inspiring them to be, wanting to be great, wanting to accomplish and check off the things that I did.
08:31Yeah.
08:32But how do you do that?
08:33Right.
08:33I like to, I hand them those little nuggets.
08:35How do you do it?
08:36Okay.
08:37Yeah.
08:37Now, are you interested in MBA coaching, WNBA coaching?
08:41You know what?
08:42I would never say that I'm not interested.
08:44For me, I love being a wife and a mom.
08:47And I feel like it's about sacrifices in the age of my children.
08:52So obviously I've had those opportunities when my kids were younger and I wasn't willing to do that.
08:57But now as my kids get older, we understand the routine of the house and what's going on.
09:02You know, it's a possibility.
09:04The reason why I love coaching in the Big Three is, one, because my family gets to be here with me.
09:09My son's working doing sideline reporting.
09:12He's fallen in love with basketball.
09:14So he's so inspired to just get in the line and do layups with Joe Johnson.
09:18So for me, it's not, you know, I'm also planting a seed while I'm in the midst of doing something that's awesome for me.
09:24But, you know, I have children who are watching.
09:27My daughter sees me like I work hard.
09:29She sees that, you know, I'm Zooming.
09:32I do public speaking.
09:33My husband and I are licensed luxury realtors, you know, in Florida.
09:38So we have properties.
09:39I have six properties.
09:41I have Airbnbs.
09:42Like, you know, I do public speaking.
09:45I do broadcasting.
09:46I'm also on We Need to Talk on CBS.
09:48So I have 10 jobs.
09:50But my favorite job is being a wife and a mom.
09:55And I like for my children to see that, that it's not just, we don't just live in this lap of luxury and this just got here.
10:03No, you know, we work hard.
10:05My husband works hard.
10:06I work hard.
10:07But also we play hard.
10:08And for our children, we want them to see, you know, what you going to do?
10:12Because this is what we worked for.
10:13I feel like the Cosby sometimes.
10:15You know, Bill Cosby used to be like, this is our stuff.
10:17What are y'all going to do?
10:18You know what I mean?
10:18And I tell my kids that because it's just like, you've been blessed to be our children.
10:23But what are you going to do?
10:24How are you going to help other people?
10:25How are you going to give back to the community?
10:27You know, we have a responsibility.
10:29You see me do a lot of things that's giving back to the community, whether we're feeding the hungry, whether we're sending out money.
10:38It don't have to be like, oh, I'm tweeting about it and all that.
10:40I said, no, you don't have to do that.
10:41That's not how God's work is.
10:43How do you help and give back?
10:44And so it's an opportunity to be a parent, to inspire your kids to want to be better, to want to be successful.
10:53But I can't do it for you.
10:55Yeah.
10:55I can't.
10:56You got the genes, you know, but that heart and effort, I can't give it to you.
11:02I'm glad you brought up the tip jobs because when it was announced, you were going to be a broadcast analyst also for Victor.
11:07Oh, yeah, that's tomorrow.
11:08I forgot that job.
11:09I was like, how is that working?
11:12And what's the balance?
11:15It really is that I love the big three.
11:19I'm here.
11:20I'm watching the games anyway.
11:21Yeah.
11:21How I got this particular job was sitting next to Cube as a fan talking about what they need to be doing.
11:27So they understand that I know basketball.
11:29To be a part of the broadcast team as well, it's not for me to sit there and be biased about the triplets.
11:35It's just for me to be really honest about what I'm seeing and what's going great about this league and about the teams and what's not.
11:42And so I wanted to do that.
11:44I told them that I wanted to be a part of that.
11:46I already work for CBS, so it's a great fit for me.
11:49And I'm hoping that we will have some success tomorrow because tomorrow is my first day on the broadcast team.
11:55And then I'll do the tri-state.
11:56Yeah, I'll do the other three games.
11:58Okay.
11:58So the days that I have games, I don't know if I also have.
12:03I think I have three games, so I'll have to see if it falls on the day that I'm actually coaching and doing broadcasts.
12:08But if so, you know, you just switch it.
12:11I tell my husband, you got the kids.
12:12We in the summer, so he knows what to do.
12:14And it's just a blessing, really.
12:17I pray that I get to continue to be a role model for so many young people and especially these young women that look like me.
12:26It is a blessing to have that opportunity and platform.
12:29I've never taken it for granted from the day I played on the Sparks.
12:32And, you know, it was the WNBA, and I had my lipstick on and my ribbons because I'm like, there's a little girl at home that looked like me that, you know, she may want to be like me.
12:41And I always had her in mind.
12:43And so when I run into so many people, it was like, I used to watch her when I was little.
12:48Exactly.
12:48You know what I mean?
12:49And I'm like, oh, we at the same age?
12:51It didn't cut up to me, boo.
12:54I'm silly, but I really do.
12:56I just, I love the opportunity to have been, to be a role model.
13:00I really do.
13:01And I know, you know, Charles Barkley was like, we're not your kids' role model.
13:04But I'm like, no, we so are.
13:06Yeah.
13:06Because I remember what it was like being in Compton and looking at TV and just like, how did they get on TV?
13:11Like, how do you do that?
13:12Like, how do you become successful?
13:14Like, what are people who have stairs in their house?
13:17Like, what is that like?
13:19You know what I mean?
13:19I come from that.
13:20So when you see it and you really want it, you know, it's an awesome opportunity to be on that other side to say, hey, you can do this too.
13:28It is a lot of hard work.
13:30Like, we all got 24 hours in a day.
13:33And sometimes we got to look at how many hours we spend on now, social media or video games.
13:39You know, those four hours that you took to do those things, those four hours could have been put into you educating yourself on something and getting better at something.
13:49And so, you know, I tell it to my kids too, my son.
13:52I'm like, look, you over here and you and this Naruto stuff that y'all love.
13:56I know I ain't saying it right.
13:57They get on me every time.
13:59But my kids are into Naruto and Xbox or whatever.
14:03I'm just like, dude, you want to do this.
14:05How much time are you putting into it?
14:07What you say you want to do?
14:08Yeah.
14:09That's my question for everybody.
14:10Like, we can all do it and be successful.
14:12And there's enough room for all of us.
14:15Yeah.
14:16That's the other thing.
14:17We got to.
14:17It's not about me, like, hating on somebody else.
14:19There's enough space and room for all of us.
14:21No one can block your blessings.
14:22No one.
14:24I'm ending it on that note.
14:25Because that is the word we need.
