00:00Hey everybody, Blake Newby, Essence Beauty and Style editor and skincare superfan here.
00:13We know that there's a health and equity gap, and that also includes the world of skincare.
00:18One of the best tools we have to close that gap is education, which is why I'm thrilled
00:22to be here today with dermatologist Dr. Caroline Robinson, who is going to give us the skinny
00:27on everything you need to know to make your melanated skin glow, what skin conditions
00:32to be on alert for, and the key ingredients and best practices to maintaining healthy
00:36skin as a part of overall health and well-being.
00:39I am also joined by the fresh faces of Neutrogena, the dynamic musical wonder duo, Chloe and Hallie,
00:46who know how important it is to keep your skin in the game from an early age.
00:51Ladies, thank you all so much for being here with me today.
00:57So I will dive right in because we don't have a lot of time, but there's a lot of knowledge
01:01to be said.
01:03So first, Chloe and Hallie, what's you all's skincare routine that keeps you all looking
01:08so healthful and vibrant?
01:10Yes.
01:11Well, for me, my skin is very, very sensitive.
01:15So the less steps I do, the better.
01:18I love using my Neutrogena cleansing wash, and I also love the moisturizer and the sunscreen.
01:26So those are like the top three things I do, and that's what really works best for me.
01:32Like if I do too much, my skin breaks out.
01:35So whatever just helps lock in the moisture, not doing tea too much.
01:40It's good for me.
01:41Yeah, and I completely agree.
01:44I mean, for me, my skin tends to be a lot oily, and I'm very prone to lots of breakouts.
01:53So for me, I love using like the Neutrogena Stubborn AM acne treatment, which I've just
01:59put on those spots that are just want to come out when I don't need them.
02:03And we talk about products, but with products, of course, come ingredients.
02:07So are there any specific ingredients that you ladies feel like you all are inclined to
02:11with your skincare products?
02:13Ooh, there's like so, so much.
02:16Really, the oil-free acne wash is really great.
02:19I know Hallie and I both use that sometimes.
02:23The one that I mainly, mainly use is like the Neutrogena Ultra Gentle Cleanser, because it's
02:28gentle, and it doesn't irritate my skin, and it has vitamin D5, which is really, really
02:33good.
02:34Of course, absolutely.
02:36And I think you all talked about skin, your skin needs, right?
02:39So, you know, there's oily skin, there's combination skin.
02:42Are there any skincare issues?
02:45I know that you just mentioned acne that you all have had to deal with, and how have you
02:49all been able to address that, especially as ladies who constantly are on the go and full
02:54glam, all of those things?
02:56Yes, absolutely.
02:57I mean, for me in particular, when my sister and I are touring, I find that my skin just
03:04does not like not being at home.
03:08So, especially when we were in Europe for the first time of, was it two years ago, Chloe,
03:14when we were touring?
03:15Yeah.
03:16And, you know, it's such a beautiful place, and it's so exhilarating, but tour is such a
03:21fast life, and you're in one place for one day, one city one day, and then the next one
03:25the other day, it's like you spend one day in each place, and you're just go, go, go,
03:30go, go.
03:31Due to traveling and, you know, being in airplanes and everywhere, it's a lot on your skin.
03:35So, for me, I've had to learn how to kind of deal with it when I'm traveling overseas.
03:40So, this time, I actually, I am overseas now, and my skin, knock on wood, has been nice.
03:45We pray, we pray it stays that way.
03:49Yeah.
03:49And I know, Dr. Robinson, I'd love to kind of shift now more to the education aspect,
03:53right?
03:53And so, one of the things that I hear a lot is people not being able to find dermatologists
03:58that look like us.
03:59And, in fact, only 3% of dermatologists are Black.
04:03So, what are the effects of inequality in the medical doctor profession?
04:08Yeah, you know, Blake, I hear that a lot from my patients as well.
04:12And I think that one of the most important things to remember is that for us to adequately
04:17deliver care to our nation, our medical profession really needs to reflect the population that
04:25it's caring for.
04:26And so, I think that, you know, representation is an important thing, but also, we need to
04:31understand the needs of our patient and how the systems, societal systems, impact how they
04:38navigate through the world.
04:39And, of course, Chloe and Hallie talked all about they use their SPF.
04:43We like the sun.
04:44The sun is our friend.
04:45But for Black skin in particular, it can, you know, different, certain problems can arise.
04:51And there's also a lot of misconceptions about sun protection.
04:53So, can you talk about the need for the discussion behind sun exposure within the Black community
04:59that needs to be addressed?
05:01Yeah.
05:01You know, one of the most widely held misconceptions is that our melanin provides us with enough
05:08protection for us to go without sunscreen.
05:10And that's simply not true.
05:12We, when we don't wear sunscreen, we're actually leaving ourselves vulnerable to the harmful
05:17effects of UV rays, which leads to my second misconception, which is that Black people
05:24won't get skin cancers.
05:26I see and treat skin cancers daily, and I see them on all skin tones.
05:31And I think it's important for us to know as a community that sunscreen, in addition to
05:37checking areas that aren't sun exposed, is part of a complete routine for protecting ourselves
05:43against sun skin cancers.
05:46And I know that SPF is also very beneficial for something that definitely is much more
05:50prevalent in Black skin, which is hyperpigmentation.
05:53Can you talk about the benefits for SPF in that?
05:56Yeah.
05:57Sunscreen is the first step when you're treating hyperpigmentation, because anything that you
06:03do, any brightening products, any procedures, anything that you try to do to address the dark
06:09spot or the hyperpigmentation, will get worse like that if you step into the sun without
06:14sunscreen.
06:15So I always make sure that my patients are wearing an SPF of 30 or higher, broad spectrum,
06:22meaning it's protecting us against UVA and UVB rays, and even water resistant so that it
06:28stays in place.
06:30And of course, Chloe and Halle talked about their skincare routines.
06:33They're so young, right?
06:34So their skin is already just by default, beautiful and radiant.
06:37But is it important to develop a skincare routine at an early age and not wait?
06:43Yes, yes.
06:43It's important to get into those healthy habits.
06:45This is skin health.
06:47After all, it's not, you know, something frivolous.
06:50We're caring for our skin.
06:51We are cleansing it.
06:53We are moisturizing and we're sun protecting so that our skin functions optimally.
06:58So I love that they have a routine and that they're prioritizing that.
07:03And how do ingredients like vitamin C and retinol help our skin?
07:06Yeah, retinol is important, especially if you're acne prone or even if you want to just
07:11do something to improve texture and be a little preventative at some of the signs of aging.
07:17Retinol can help get our skin cells on the same page so that they are turning over and
07:23making sure that we're revealing that dewy, glowy skin underneath.
07:27And vitamin C works hand in hand with retinol because it helps to address antioxidant effects.
07:34It's going to improve our, brighten our skin, improve our skin balance and tightness.
07:41So I love vitamin C.
07:42It's one of my favorite ingredients.
07:44And I'm sure that as a derm you hear all the time, people are just like, just tell me what
07:47to use.
07:47Just tell me what to use.
07:48Tell me the products.
07:49So whether for dry skin or oily skin, we hear consistently that it's hard to find the
07:54right skincare product, right?
07:56So what are some general tips that you can offer to help guide someone to a healthier skincare
08:00routine?
08:00Yeah, I think that it's important for us to not go without moisturizer.
08:05None of us want to look ashy, right?
08:08None of us.
08:09That's like the thing we're all trying to avoid.
08:12So don't skip the moisturizer.
08:13Just find the right one for your skin type.
08:16And that is going to actually go a long way in improving the health of your skin.
08:21And then from there, you can start to add on actives.
08:24I think that there's a lot of focus on actives without focusing on basic skincare.
08:29And so how is it important?
08:31How important is it rather for our audience to seek the advice of someone like you, a dermatologist,
08:36particularly someone that a dermatologist that looks like them?
08:40Yeah, I think it's important to seek a dermatologist when you're struggling with what to use.
08:47You know, there's this like over exfoliating era that's happening where people are just
08:52using like 15 products and that's really taking a toll on our skin.
08:56So I think that seeing a dermatologist to simplify and guide you with your skincare is also an
09:03important thing to do.
09:04And I think that, you know, seeing someone who understands your skin, it goes beyond looking
09:11like you, but actually understanding your skin is going to be important to advocate for
09:16your skin health and Chloe and Hallie jumping back to you.
09:19Why was Neutrogena such a perfect partnership for you?
09:23Yes.
09:24Well, one, ever since we were little girls in Atlanta, we were always obsessed with the
09:31splashing of the food.
09:34And honestly, since we were little girls, we always had Neutrogena products in our household.
09:39And more currently, I love how they are being so open to changing their skin cares for all
09:47skin types.
09:49You know, how they started with the sunscreen and even the hyperpigmentation, dark spot
09:53treatments.
09:53Even us as Black women, we still get that.
09:56So to see how inclusive they are now being, it was a no-brainer for my sister and I.
10:02And I think it was really special that it was the two of us doing this because we both
10:06represent, even though we are the same, we both represent two different skin types.
10:11Yeah.
10:11And none of us are the same out there.
10:13So it was a no-brainer for us.
10:15And I really love Neutrogena.
10:17And how is Neutrogena helping to promote and bring about just a more equitable skin health
10:24environment for people with skin like ours?
10:26That they are promoting such a positive image and a real image.
10:33I mean, for me personally, as a woman of color, as a Black woman who looks to the television
10:39and sees commercials of us, sometimes we see girls and women that don't look like us, that's
10:45not realistic, that don't have any of the problems that we have.
10:48And sometimes I'm like, okay, yeah, that's not for me.
10:52Right.
10:52And what I love about these is that I feel included.
10:55I feel like my imperfections are a good thing because I see them on screen because they
11:02make it not seem as though it's a bad thing.
11:04And it's a wonderful thing to want to embrace who you are, especially as a Black woman.
11:09And our skin is beautiful.
11:11Each one of you are beautiful.
11:13And that's what I have to remember.
11:15So that's what I love about caring with Neutrogena.
11:18And I feel like they just are really getting it and really showing the world that it is
11:22beautiful to just be you and be real.
11:25And Dr. Robinson, kind of keeping with that same conversation, what common is it for Black
11:30people to experience skin inequality in health care?
11:33I think that, you know, we're only starting to scrape the tip of the iceberg as to how common
11:43inequities are.
11:44And I think that part of changing that narrative is representation within the field.
11:51Also, the staff.
11:53I think, you know, top to bottom, we need to make sure, just like Chloe and Hallie said,
11:57when they saw Neutrogena ads and they felt included, we need to make sure that the environment
12:02that we're creating for patients that they feel included and comfortable in talking to
12:07us about their skin concerns.
12:08So I think that should be prioritized.
12:11And as cost, would you say that cost is sometimes a barrier to medical visits with a dermatologist?
12:16You know, cost, insurance.
12:18Sometimes, you know, since dermatologists are considered by some insurance companies as
12:23like a secondary provider.
12:25Some people need referrals.
12:27And I, in particular, my practice, I follow direct care models so that patients can see
12:33me directly to try to combat that barrier.
12:36But I know it's an ongoing battle.
12:39Well, ladies, what an illuminating conversation.
12:43Thank you so, so much, Dr. Robinson.
12:46And to the ever so beautiful Chloe and Hallie for sharing your intimate wisdom with me today.
12:51It's powerful women like you all who are making the necessary strides to really close that
12:56skin and equity gap.
12:57And so please keep shining and inspiring us all.
13:00Also, you all named a whole bunch of amazing products that I can't wait to add to my shopping
13:04cart.
13:05So I'm going to do that right now.
13:06Thank you again to my guests and to everyone for watching today and being part of such a needed,
13:13open, and honest dialogue.
13:15Ladies, have a wonderful day.
13:17Such a pleasure.
13:18Such a pleasure.
13:19Thank you so much.
13:20Thank y'all.
13:22Bye.
13:22Bye.
13:23Thank you so much, Chloe, Hallie, and Blake, for that important conversation.
13:44Now, here are three more skincare tips that Dr. Robinson wants you to know.
13:49Number one, make sure that when you're choosing a sunscreen, it's protecting you.
13:55That means it should be at least SPF 30.
13:58If you tend to be one of those underappliers, it's even better to go up to an SPF 50.
14:05Make sure that it's broad spectrum and that it's protecting you against UVA and UVB rays.
14:10And if you have sensitive skin, a mineral sunscreen is going to be better suited to your skin type so that you can make sure that your sunscreen works for you.
14:21And number two, it's important to add in humectant ingredients.
14:26That means ingredients that are going to attract water to your skin and keep you hydrated.
14:30One of my favorites is hyaluronic acid.
14:33And the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel Cream incorporates low and high molecular weight hyaluronic acid so that you're hydrated throughout the layers of your skin.
14:44That means that the gel matrix technology actually keeps your skin hydrated and bouncy for up to 48 hours.
14:52And we know we love a good dewy glow.
14:55So that's important.
14:56And number three is retinol.
14:58You've probably heard a lot about this ingredient, but you don't really quite understand what it does.
15:04Retinol helps with fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots, and texture.
15:10And it can actually be a very, very important ingredient for both acne because of its ability to unplug the pores, but also for preventing some of those signs of aging.
15:21So I recommend if you're new to retinol, starting out slow, low and slow.
15:27That means a very small amount, a few times a week, and make sure that you're moisturizing along with it.
