00:00A celebrity has slid in my DMs, and I will not tell you.
00:06What's up, everybody?
00:07It's Jasmine Sullivan, and welcome to My Essence Uncovered.
00:13I was definitely scared to come back after taking a six-year hiatus from reality show to hotels.
00:20There's been so many women that have entered the industry and R&B,
00:25and for me, I never quite know if I have a space left or if people want to hear what I have to say.
00:31Putting a project out after that long is always nerve-wracking,
00:34but once I do it and I face my fears, I realize that the people that rock with me and my fans,
00:40they rock with me hard, and it just makes me feel so much better.
00:47I can't explain what it feels like to be on the cover of Essence.
00:50This was one of those things I never really even imagined for myself,
00:57and so it feels surreal that I've gotten to a point in my career where I'm able to be on a cover,
01:03and people are going to see my image and hear my story and see this interview
01:09and experience who I am in a different way.
01:12I am definitely honored and just feel so blessed and happy that I've got the cover.
01:20I'm a huge fan of Issa Rae.
01:24I love Issa just from watching her shows,
01:27and she's just all around just a dope, creative person,
01:30and I was just very, very honored that she did this interview of me,
01:36and it's always amazing connecting with Issa.
01:39She feels like a girlfriend, and she always gets the dirt out of me, always,
01:44because she feels so much like a girlfriend.
01:47You know, it doesn't even feel really like an interview.
01:50It's just like you're talking to one of your girls.
01:53Using hotels to empower women was important to me because so often black women's voices are silenced,
02:00and the way that we are portrayed in society and the media is so monolithic,
02:07and people think they got us figured out, and they don't.
02:11You know, we are so much more than the media portrays us,
02:14and I just wanted to give light to black women in all their glory.
02:18The pettiest thing I've ever done to an ex was fire them.
02:30That's not right, but that's true, and obviously bust the windows out their car,
02:35even though I don't think that's petty.
02:36I feel like that was raw emotion in the moment, so that doesn't count as petty.
02:40Like, for me, pettiness is when you, like, take the time, and you think about it,
02:44and you're like, how can I get them back?
02:45Like, me busting the windows was just, like, a hurt woman,
02:48and this is just the consequences of that.
02:53I'm in love.
02:54I have found a man that treats me amazingly,
02:58and hopefully some love songs will come from that.
03:05I've evolved as a person from fearless till now
03:08because I appreciate everything so much more.
03:14I appreciate time so much more.
03:16After experiencing corona,
03:20and then experiencing a personal experience that I had with my mother,
03:26which was her being diagnosed with breast cancer and going through chemo,
03:30obviously that changes you,
03:32and it just makes you appreciate everything that life has to offer.
03:36the time that you get on this earth
03:38because you just never know when it's going to be your time to go,
03:42when it's going to be your loved one's time to go,
03:44and so you just appreciate them more.
03:46And so that's definitely something that's changed in me.
03:48I'll see you next time.
03:49I'll see you next time.
