NFL quarterback and Fellaship owner Cam Newton talks about his new digital show with BETNetworks called Sip 'N Smoke
Transcript
00:00You know, crisscross, we wore our pants backwards, we was jump, jump, you know, we was doing hip-hop things, so nobody was like, okay, we need you to change clothes, we need you to wear something tight and show some titties and that, it was, it was no, none of that, so I was grateful that Jermaine Dupree let me be myself, and he didn't try to sell sex with me, because my lyrics got me to work.
00:18I want to start, you know, being, I'm recently moved to Atlanta, so I would love to kind of talk about you opening Fellowship here and just bringing that experience, you know, to your hometown, and then wrapping, you know, sip and smoke with that.
00:39You know, Fellowship was an idea that was, it kind of stemmed from traveling, and I realized with Atlanta being kind of the hub of the culture, it was no place like it, and I read a, what is it, a Warren Buffett quote that, if there's nothing that's like it, you create it.
01:05Okay.
01:06And, um, I may have misquote that, but it sounded good, but, but look, I, uh, yeah, I created the Cigar Lounge, and it was just something that gave me an opportunity to socialize with people, because I love being around people to a degree, and, um, yeah, and then have an opportunity to work with, uh, BET, the show Sip and Smoke.
01:31So, all it was was something that I was doing on a regular basis in the Cigar Lounge, generally, you know, but just doing it with, you know, more prominent people that people notice.
01:42Yeah.
01:43Yeah, so that's what it was.
01:45Yeah, I mean, that's what I can tell, like, you're asking questions, I feel like, like, what you really want to know, like, if there was no cameras going, you know, yeah.
01:53How does it feel for you to be able to be the one, you know, asking the questions instead of, like, reporters, you know, running after you, asking you things?
02:01Right.
02:01Well, for me, it gave me a different respect of journalism.
02:08And, you know, for a long time, I couldn't come to grips with, why is this person asking this?
02:16You know what I'm saying?
02:17But when you realize that this is their livelihood, you know, this is how they get paid, this is, you know, their job.
02:26And once you do that, you're respected and realize, you know, it's either going to be yes or no.
02:32And I'm going to either go into details or it just is going to be what it is, Ms. Brandy.
02:37You know what I'm saying?
02:38So that's how we going to rock with it.
02:40And talk about the guests that you picked.
02:45I feel like there's obviously, you know, a lot of Atlanta talent, entrepreneurs.
02:49But how did you pick, you know, the specific people you talked to in this season?
02:54For me, you know, it was a lot of, you know, backhouse things, you know, the help of BET, the different production companies that was involved.
03:03And really availability.
03:06Okay.
03:06So given, given another circumstance or the timing of everything, you know, even battling COVID, a lot of people didn't want to come in contact.
03:20So you had to respect it.
03:21And we just felt like it wouldn't have had the same type of impact being a virtual show.
03:27So, yeah.
03:28Yeah, yeah.
03:29I love both in the episodes with Brad and Judy and even Steve Harvey, you talked a little bit about, you know, over the course of your career, people have looked at you like, what are you doing?
03:41What are you wearing?
03:42This, that, and third.
03:42And you were thankful.
03:44You know, kind of the examples they've said of, you know, you were like, you don't have to give a damn, you know, what other people think.
03:49So I'm curious, you know, for you, when did you stop caring what people thought, if you ever did?
03:53You know, and what, what that process was like for you, just doing it.
03:57You know, I realized I was, there's a brand, there's an image that you have to uphold, which is bullshit, by the way.
04:06This is just a, this is, it probably was created by a person that was fearful of them being themselves.
04:11And I always look at people that's in the media now, that if something happens, barring something unethical that happens, and it's almost like you put yourself up in this, this pinnacle that is like, oh my God, I knew he was just too good to be true.
04:29I don't want to be that dude.
04:31You know what I'm saying?
04:31I want people to know, like, I'm turnt.
04:33Like, I want people to know that I'm, I'm a good time.
04:36You know what I'm saying?
04:36I'm respectful.
04:37You know what I'm saying?
04:38I'm a person that you can learn from.
04:39I'm a person that, you know what I'm saying?
04:41I'm a vibe, you know?
04:43And some people is just like, nah, dude, I don't want to talk to him, you know?
04:49But yeah, through it all, I found myself early on in my career, or even, you know, kind of coming up, you know, like fitting the mold of what somebody else deemed me to be.
05:01Yeah.
05:02And now it's like, bruh, you're going to talk about me regardless.
05:04Like, you, you feel me?
05:08Where it is, they want you to wear it at.
05:10You look like this, they want you to be this way.
05:13You want to, and I'm like, bruh, I'm not that, man.
05:15You know?
05:16We all are the same to a degree, but we all are different, too.
05:19And that makes, that's the uniqueness that makes us us.
05:22Yeah.
05:22Yeah.
05:22I also really love the conversation with Steve Harvey, where you talked about being fathers, you know, and being stepdads, too.
05:31Like, I've had two stepfathers, but both of whom, you know, never treated me like I was not their own stepdaughter.
05:38So I'd love to hear you talk about that.
05:40Can you, you know, kind of elaborate on, you know, coming in that place?
05:44And like you say, you know, I don't want you to be like, you're not my dad, but, you know, just kind of a gem on, you know, being a step here and what you've learned.
05:53Well, it's simple.
05:55And, you know, out of respect of the children, I just always allow them to know that I'm here.
06:03And I never want no type of disconnect from what, what, being biologically and having the heart of something, there's no different.
06:14You know, there's a lot of father figures.
06:16There's a lot of motherly figures.
06:18There's a lot of people that are in people's lives to this day that people put in high regard.
06:24And I have people in my life that are close to me, and you can't tell me that they're not my kin.
06:30Like, of course.
06:31So, being a father, it just allows you to really tap into it and shape and mold and create something that you know is needed.
06:43And like I always tell Shakira, like I always tell Jaden, I'm like, bro, I've been 14 to 15 before.
06:51I haven't been 30 before.
06:53You know what I'm saying?
06:54So trust and believe.
06:56And I just want them to know love.
06:57I just want them to know, like, that feeling.
07:01And because I had it.
07:03I grew up in a three-parent home.
07:05My mom, my dad, and my grandma.
07:07And they showed me that on a regular basis.
07:10And that's what I just want to provide to my children.
07:14Yeah.
07:15And you talked, I think your daughter was on set for one of the tapings in that.
07:19Yeah.
07:19Can you talk about, like, just having them see what you do?
07:22Yes, it's cool because I'm coming into a sector of my life where, you know, I got multiple things that's going on outside of football.
07:31And everybody knows, you know, who I am.
07:35And I really value taking them to school.
07:38Okay.
07:38And just the little things because I don't always have time to do it.
07:43Yeah.
07:44So they make it embarrassed.
07:46They ask questions like, well, what is it like?
07:50You know?
07:50And that's just the gift and the curse of me being me.
07:54Yeah.
07:55But also for them to kind of witness me working, that's, they always hear dad like, oh, he's gone for a couple of days.
08:06What is he doing?
08:06Oh, he's in Boston.
08:08Or the days when I was in Charlotte, you know, he's there and, you know, they don't necessarily know.
08:13Or I'm shooting a show.
08:15Yeah.
08:15You know, oh, can I come?
08:18Yeah, you can come.
08:19For her to see it, it's like, oh, this is what you call work.
08:23You know what I'm saying?
08:25Yes.
08:25A lot of memes to them.
08:26Every day ain't just TikTok and Instagram and, you know, Hot Cheetos and Netflix, you know.
08:33Right.
08:35Allow them to really see when daddy's not here, this is what daddy's doing.
08:41Yeah.
08:42I thought it was cool too, talking to Mr. Magic.
08:44Like, I never had thought about, like, who started Magic City?
08:46Like, what was that?
08:49That was dope.
08:50Do you have, like, a wish list of guests that you're hoping to get in the future?
08:54Oh, without a doubt.
08:56Yeah.
08:56You know, there's a ultimate goal for this show, you know, and I think for me, I want
09:04to put my own signature to it, but at the same time, be inspired by what has came before
09:10me, you know, obviously trying to implement, you know.
09:13I don't really necessarily want it to be a live crowd, live studio audience, but I do
09:21want to have that Oprah honest, you know, that Arsenio Hall kind of vibe where, you know,
09:28we tapping into the culture, real life, you know, thing, and we're doing it on our time.
09:34So it's not like you feel pressured that, you know, all right, I'm coming back, da-da-da-da-da,
09:39we're going to ask, you know, no, it's just, bro, let's sit, let's chat, you know, let's
09:44talk about it.
09:45You know, we got an hour here, we might as well enjoy it, so rock and roll.
09:50Yeah.
09:51How do you feel about the space for athletes now?
09:54You know, I think so long it's been this idea, run the ball, do whatever, you know,
09:58ain't nothing else.
09:59We don't want to hear you talk, we don't want to whatever, you know, and I think this
10:02is really a platform.
10:03We get to hear your opinion, you know, and hear from you.
10:05Do you feel like, you know, we're moving in a place where that's more accepted, understood,
10:11you know, you have opinions, voice like everybody else.
10:14Yeah.
10:14You know, somebody asked me, you know, in a prior interview, it was like, was there something
10:18that you found out about yourself that you didn't know?
10:21And I didn't want to sound, you know, cocky or anything like that, but I was like, no,
10:26I, I, I, that wasn't my intentions.
10:29My intentions was to show a side of myself to people that they didn't know, because
10:34oftentimes, especially as football players, outside of basketball players, baseball players
10:40and other different sports, we're, we get gypped for our, from our identity.
10:46We wear a helmet, which covers our face.
10:49So if you don't know who Odell is, you're not going to be like, oh man, that's Odell.
10:55Who Tom Brady is, you know, you're going to be like, who is that?
11:00Like, what'd he do?
11:02Like, who is that?
11:03You know, why are you dressed like that?
11:04You know what I'm saying?
11:07But yeah, you know, this gave me an opportunity to really show a side of me that people aren't
11:13used to seeing.
11:15And I'm extremely blessed to have that opportunity from BET.
11:19Yeah.
11:20So last question, you know, you asked Judy, what haven't you done yet that you want to
11:24do?
11:24So I want to ask that same question to you.
11:26I want to win a Superbowl.
11:28Okay.
11:29And that's, that's simple and to the point.
11:32Got it.
11:33Well, thank you so much.
11:35I appreciate your time.
11:37And it's Brandy.
11:38You've been such a plump, pleasing pleasure.
11:40You've been such a plump, pleasing pleasure.
11:40You've been such a plump, pleasing pleasure.
11:41You've been such a plump, pleasing pleasure.
11:41You've been such a plump, pleasing pleasure.
11:42You've been such a plump, pleasing pleasure.
11:42You've been such a plump, pleasing pleasure.
11:43You've been such a plump, pleasing pleasure.
11:44You've been such a plump, pleasing pleasure.
11:45You've been such a plump, pleasing pleasure.
11:46You've been such a plump, pleasing pleasure.
11:47You've been such a plump, pleasing pleasure.
11:48You've been such a plump, pleasing pleasure.
11:49You've been such a plump, pleasing pleasure.
11:50You've been such a plump, pleasing pleasure.
11:51You've been such a plump, pleasing pleasure.
11:52You've been such a plump, pleasing pleasure.
11:53You've been such a plump, pleasing pleasure.
