Remy Ma presses the importance of using your celebrity platform for change
Transcript
00:00When I watch these celebrities that come from where I come from, because I don't know any celebrities for that matter in my field that grew up with money, that grew up with a silver spoon, like we all come from the bottom.
00:11And it's like they have these publicists sitting there and they tell them, hey, yeah, this is a hot topic right now. You need to post something about it. You need to say something about it. But like Mary said, they don't do anything.
00:21But the people that are working against us, they are working 24-7 and they sit back and they wait. They'll be like, yeah, they're onto it now. Next week, they'll be talking about basketball.
00:29They'll be talking about some new meme that came out and they'll be continuing their path.
00:35So they're steadfast in their path. When they're trying to do something, they're trying to tear us down or take something away from it.
00:39They're on it 24-7. They hire teams. They bring in specialists for it. And with us, it's like it's just a fad or it's a joke.
00:46And me and my husband, we sit there sometimes and I'd be like, okay, we're talking about the people in Puerto Rico right now.
00:51Everyone's posting it. We're gathering money and we're doing all these things.
00:53And I went out and I was talking to people, getting them to donate pampers and batteries and all these things.
00:59And then a week goes by and they're talking about something else. But in Puerto Rico, they still don't have lights.
01:04I just feel like we have to stay on a path. We can't just keep jumping from thing to thing.
01:10If you're going to be in it, it's not just for a tweet. It's not just for an IG post. It's not just so that people can get lights.
01:16And you can say something like really do something. And I think as artists, that is our responsibility.
01:22I heard so many artists say, you know, oh, I'm not a role model. I wasn't put on this to be a role model.
01:25But you end up being that. You end up having people look at you and you end up people, children looking up to you and some adults looking up to you.
01:32I have people all the time that come to me that are older than me and say, you know, you're an inspiration to me.
01:36And I learned X, Y, Z from you. So I just feel like as artists, we do have a responsibility.
01:41And I just feel like we really need to stick to it, not just go with the fads.
