Monica on Her New Music and 20th Anniversary of ‘The Boy Is Mine’
Transcript
00:00What is the status of new music?
00:06We just started back working on it.
00:09I felt it important to me to kind of get back in touch with the people again.
00:12I spent a lot of time making sure that my family is okay.
00:16I got three children that are just amazing.
00:19And I just wanted to make sure that I got back in touch.
00:22So we went out on tour, myself, Xscape, Tamar Braxton, Zonique, and June's Diary.
00:28We went out every night on an all-girl tour for like 31 cities.
00:32And it was just amazing to really get back in touch with the people that started with all of us.
00:37And so I spent a lot of time working on that.
00:39And then the show calls kept coming.
00:41And we finally said, you know what, we're shutting down to just really focus on what the music will be like.
00:47And working with different producers, I have a wish list.
00:49And I'm sure that there are people out there that I will work with that maybe you've never heard of.
00:54Yeah. Can you share with us what that wish list is like or who those people are?
00:57Oh, of course.
00:58I always make sure I call Dallas Austin.
01:00That's where it started.
01:01That's where it began.
01:02We always get together.
01:03Missy Elliott and I, Polo to Don, Timbaland, who contributed some crazy stuff to the last project.
01:10But I like to work with Pharrell.
01:12I like to work with Zaytoven.
01:13I like to work with Metro Boomin.
01:15I like to work with just people that also understand where I come from.
01:19Because my music, I think the authenticity of it has been there because I was okay with being me.
01:24I was okay with not being like everybody else and talking about some of the hard subjects and being unashamed of the things that I've done and things that I've experienced.
01:32So with that thought in mind, I want some music from some that don't know me and then some that really know me.
01:37That know the history and the past.
01:39Exactly.
01:40Can we get a date on it?
01:41Exactly.
01:42I don't even have a date.
01:43Oh, okay.
01:44And you know what?
01:45My best records ever, they never had a date.
01:47It was all about the feeling.
01:48When you start thinking about the politics of it and if we do it in this timeframe, then we can do this.
01:53Right.
01:54Or if we spend this much, we can do that.
01:55Right.
01:56You start to kind of mess with the creativity of it.
01:59And sometimes that's unavoidable.
02:00But in this case, I'm very fortunate that I don't have to think about that and we'll just work until it's right.
02:05Well, we can't wait.
02:06We'll definitely be looking out for that whenever it comes out.
02:08So speaking of music, this is the 20th anniversary of The Boy Is Mine.
02:12It's been 20 years.
02:13Yes, it has.
02:14Now, why do you think that song still resonates with so many people?
02:17You know, I think that that song kind of marks a date in people's lives in one respect.
02:25Two, Brandy is one of our greats from that entire era.
02:31So you take two girls that are complete opposites, you blend them together and you make a record.
02:36And then we have Makai Pfeiffer in the video.
02:38And the good part about it was at the end, we turn on him.
02:42Yes.
02:43So I think girls collectively enjoy not just the sound, but also the visuals.
02:47But that song was so well produced and created because we didn't know each other before we recorded it.
02:54But it automatically made people think and assume that we did.
02:57And I think that that comes with great production.
03:01Yeah.
03:02Rodney Jerkins and LaShawn Daniels and Fred.
03:05All of them were in this room and they were just given their ideas and they were young and just very lively at heart.
03:11And just I think they saw the vision when they created the record.
03:15So I'm very fortunate that they brought me into it.
03:17I mean, it wasn't my song.
03:18It was hers.
03:19It was her song.
03:20Absolutely.
03:21I know you guys worked together in 2012 when It All Belongs To Me.
03:24Is there any chance that you guys could work together in the future or?
03:27You know what, It All Belongs To Me was done by Rico Love, which is another producer that's become full out family to me.
03:33And one thing about Brandy and I, I think there's always room for us to work or do whatever we want to do or choose to do with each other.
03:39Always.
03:40I think you never get moments back.
03:42I always tell people we're not trying to duplicate what we did before.
03:46We understand that that's a moment in time.
03:48Right.
03:49But when we make other music, you know, we don't even, you know, want it to be the idea that we're trying to redo or recreate that.
03:56It's got to be something new.
03:57It's always new and fresh and different.
03:59Yeah.
04:00Well, we're open to it.
04:01So hopefully we're putting it out there that we would love to see a new Brandy and Monica track on the record.
