00:00Hello! What's up, everybody? What's up, Essence? Y'all make the noise. Ladies, if you're feeling good, say, ow.
00:12Alright, I knew you guys could say that if you couldn't say anything else. Are you guys ready? You're going to get some free nuggets today from me.
00:18I'm going to give you all kind of cool style tips. Hello. You guys are looking fabulous in the audience.
00:24Today is going to be an amazing moment. What's up, everybody? I see a lot of familiar faces, I know.
00:28Let's get it started. Can y'all just give it up for Tina Lifford? I mean, my God.
00:33Don't you love these pants?
00:36If it's any client that I have that's a style-nista, it has to be Tina Lifford. She's always cutting edge.
00:43I mean, look at these amazing pants, right? Like, who else could rock these pants? Guess what?
00:48All of you.
00:49All of you can. We're going to tell you guys how. What's up, DJ?
00:52All right. So, Tina, where do we start today?
00:58All right. So, people are always asking me how I get the style that Jay and I have put together.
01:05So, Jay, I think that you should share with the audience, like, some real style and fashion basics.
01:12Like, what are the three basic components that you are always talking about when it comes to making sure you put together a cohesive style?
01:24Well, I think that that starts with women not overdoing a look.
01:28How many times do you go in a closet and you just want to put on everything because you become so frustrated that you don't even know what to put on?
01:35So, let me make this extremely easy for you. You can go in your closet and pick out three things, three focal points.
01:43That should only be the three things that you look at every time that you put on the outfit.
01:49So, it should be shades, it should be a belt, or it should be shoes.
01:54Or the accessory could be a lip, it could be a belt, and it could be your pants.
01:59You shouldn't have on four or five different focal points.
02:02Have you ever seen that lady that walked across in front of you an essence that she had on everything?
02:07And you're like, now, child, she knows she should have stayed at home with all that on.
02:11So, what I'm hearing you say is that there's a focal point from here up.
02:16From here up.
02:16And there's a focal point at the waist.
02:19And one on the bottom.
02:20On the bottom, and then on the bottom.
02:22Exactly.
02:22So, it doesn't have to be glasses, even though you said glasses. You just want to make sure.
02:26Just an example.
02:27Okay.
02:27But what you don't want to do is do all three focal points from your waist up or from your bottom down.
02:33You want to use your entire body for the three focal points.
02:36It shouldn't just be from waist up or waist down.
02:38Okay, ladies?
02:39Y'all got that?
02:40Say, ow.
02:43That's going to be the way we communicate today.
02:44Okay, guys?
02:45Ow.
02:46Okay, now, one of the things that I love is that Jay normally pairs the outfit with jewelry.
02:56How do you know when to wear jewelry and not to wear jewelry?
03:00And the rings.
03:01You do such a wonderful thing with rings.
03:03And then sometimes you tell me to not wear rings at all.
03:06So, I feel like you should do, if you're going to do a statement piece, it should be in a statement area, and all the statements should be in that one area.
03:14I don't think that you should do a statement necklace.
03:17How many of y'all have seen the people, or may have been yourselves, I've caught Tina sometimes doing this, sometimes in her closet.
03:24She'll have the matching necklace, the matching earring, the matching bracelet, the matching ring.
03:30Child, it's 2018.
03:31If you don't get rid of these sets, nobody's doing sets anymore, okay?
03:36So, what you want to do is, if you're going to do a statement look with jewelry and accessories, do it all in one area.
03:42So, if you're going to do a necklace, overdo it with necklaces.
03:45Layer up until you can't layer anymore, to the point that it chokes you where you can't breathe, because that's what fashion is about, right?
03:51Not breathing.
03:52Who breathes anymore?
03:54So, then if you're going to do rings, do all rings.
03:58Go crazy on your rings, lady.
03:59The only thing that I ask is that you don't take your wedding ring off, okay, for God's sake.
04:04That's one of the accessories as well.
04:05So, overdo it on that as well, and then, there you go.
04:08Even if you want to do multiple belts, multiple belts is even in style.
04:12You don't have to just wear one belt.
04:14Now, the mistake is, is that you have to get the right belt.
04:19Yeah.
04:19Because have you ever seen someone who has on a belt and you can't see it?
04:24Yes.
04:25It's the wrong thing, guys, right?
04:27So, ladies, if you have curves, you don't want to put on a really small belt or a really flimsy belt that's just that elasticity.
04:34Have y'all seen those belts?
04:35And it's full of elasticity.
04:37You don't want to put that on when you have curves because guess what?
04:40It's going to fold over and it's going to lose its luxuriousness.
04:44Okay.
04:44You don't want to do that.
04:45All right.
04:45So, one of the things that you are known for is snatching the waist.
04:50Yes, I am.
04:51If we're going to talk belts, let's talk about how one creates a silhouette and the importance of snatching the waist and how it impacts the look.
05:03Now, raise your hands if you like to have a snatched waistline.
05:07And for those who don't know what a snatched waistline is, it means that you've created a waistline.
05:12Some women don't even feel like they have a waistline or that they'll never be able to achieve having one.
05:17You, too, can have a waistline.
05:20Everyone in here, and I'm known for that.
05:22I will snatch it in, okay?
05:23The importance of it or the how-to is, how do I even get a snatched waistline?
05:27You see my clients.
05:28You see Erica Campbell and Tasha Cobb, all these people.
05:31And when I'm with them, you see that the waistline becomes nonexistent.
05:35It's like, what happened to the waist?
05:36It's gone.
05:38Well, that just comes from a little trick called sphinx and undergarments because your foundation is the most important thing.
05:45Raise your hands if you've seen someone walking around Essence who didn't have on any undergarments.
05:51And you're like, she should have had on undergarments today, man.
05:55So what you want to do is you don't want to talk about your sister.
05:57Just tell her, you know, Jay Boland told me that we can get our spanks and our undergarments from Angela Dean Designs.
06:05Angela Dean Designs is based out of Los Angeles, an African-American foundation wear maker.
06:10So you definitely want to support that.
06:13Raise your hands, clap your hands to support an African-American foundation designer who has done something so great for you.
06:21Actually, she makes pieces for Oprah.
06:23She actually does Oprah's undergarments, okay?
06:26This is what you want to do.
06:28You want to go to Angela Dean Designs and you want to purchase her pieces because it will snatch you up all the way.
06:35And you get that ridge that happens right across here, right?
06:39And in the stores, they always say, oh, buy me now.
06:43I'm seamless.
06:43And it's like you get home and it's not seamless.
06:46It's not seamless.
06:47Angela Dean is seamless, and I mean she's seamless.
06:50You don't see a line here.
06:52She has them that stop right above the knee, and then she also has them right at the ankle.
06:57So they come to the ankle as well.
06:59And that's for my ladies who actually want to keep the body really tone when you have on slacks or white pair of pants
07:05and you don't want to show the things that you don't want to show, all the unforgiving areas.
07:09Okay, so what I just heard you say is smooth it out with some good undergarments.
07:14Yes, that's the point.
07:15And then use a belt, you know.
07:17Snatch it in.
07:18To snatch it in.
07:19Yes.
07:20To the point that you almost can't breathe.
07:22Yes, no, to the point that you don't breathe.
07:23That you don't breathe.
07:24Yes.
07:24Okay, and you usually say something about creating an A-line or a shape.
07:30Well, that's for my ladies who are my curvy girls.
07:33I love to put on A-line pieces because they're so flattering, and it creates a waistline when you don't have a waistline, right?
07:41So some women are shaped rectangular, and if you have a rectangular shape and you don't have the apple curve,
07:47you know what I mean, that people are buying now, we want to make it with clothing, okay?
07:53Y'all caught that?
07:53You can go and buy it, but you don't have to be stuck with it permanently, okay?
07:58Just get you a fabulous A-line skirt, tie it up really tight at the waist, or have it tailored to the waist.
08:04All you have to do is go to your local seamstress, find somebody on the corner who will do it up for you for $5, $10.
08:12It just takes that little extra piece of effort in order to get that luxurious, tailored look that you're looking for, ladies.
08:18Okay.
08:19All right.
08:19So I know that we actually have some women that we're going to bring out in a moment.
08:24We do.
08:24But is there, like, a burning style question that someone has?
08:30There has to be.
08:30Just maybe one or two burning style questions for Jay Boland.
08:35There has to be some style questions.
08:37There's one over here.
08:38Okay.
08:39All right.
08:39Jump up.
08:41Fast.
08:42We're going to get the microphone to you real fast.
08:45Tina, be careful, okay?
08:46That will be the worst thing ever to see you fall.
08:49Yes.
08:49All right.
08:50What's your question?
08:51My question is about mixing prints.
08:53Yes.
08:53Like, I know, like, this is really beautiful, and a lot of people don't feel comfortable.
08:57Like, even today, I was kind of nervous about doing this.
08:59How do you choose the prints that you mix so that it's not, like, not tacky, but it actually gets...
09:04It's not overdone.
09:05Gotcha.
09:05So her question is...
09:06That's a great question.
09:07How do you know when it's okay to mix prints?
09:10Let me help Tina back up.
09:12How do you know when it's okay to actually mix prints?
09:14Well, what you want to do is that when you're playing with colors and prints, all you have to do is find three colors,
09:21your bottom three colors in each look, and your top, and your bottom, and make sure if you have a top that's red, pink, and orange,
09:29and those are the main colors that are in that piece, you want to make sure that that skirt that has those same prints in it
09:34or different prints in it has those same three colors in it.
09:37You want to identify those three colors from here to those three colors from here.
09:42If it's only two colors, you identify the two colors on top and the two colors on bottom, okay?
09:46Was that easy, ladies?
09:48I'm not losing you, so I want to hear you say what?
09:51All right.
09:51Here we go.
09:52So we brought some models for you guys to see, some of the looks that I've actually created,
09:56and it's of all women of shapes, sizes, ages, so let's get this part of it started.
10:03So we'll bring out our first model.
10:09Here we go.
10:10Here we go.
10:10Here we go.
10:12All right.
10:12So here's our first model.
10:13What I want to do with this look is something extremely androgynous.
10:18Have you ever just seen that look and you're just like, you know what?
10:21I just want to be like real tomboy chic today.
10:23I just want to kind of have that little piece of edge.
10:25Well, this is the look you can do it, and this is also one of the looks that any one
10:30of you ladies can actually work with.
10:33All shapes, all sizes, all heights, all skin complexions.
10:38All of you can do this, and you don't even have to play with mixing prints with this.
10:42This is a set that's already put together for you, and you can purchase this from your
10:46local Nordstrom's, which is extremely affordable, and it has an extreme luxurious look.
10:50Y'all like this?
10:52Give it up if you're loving this look.
10:54Okay.
10:54Now, Che, I have a couple of questions.
10:56Point out the statement pieces in this outfit.
11:00So the outfit itself is one statement.
11:03It's one complete statement with this outfit.
11:05The second statement is the shades.
11:07As you notice, I did a neutral lip on her, because your lips sometimes can be an accessory
11:11as well.
11:12So you don't want to have a lip, shades, earrings on.
11:16If you can see, I didn't put any earrings on her as well.
11:18So the hat will be the third accessory.
11:21So here we have three pointed out looks that you can wear and make it fabulous, and you're
11:28not overdoing it at all.
11:29Imagine if she had to come out here and had on a red lip and long earrings on.
11:36Right.
11:37It would have taken away from the look completely.
11:39So minimalistic is the best.
11:41Fantastic.
11:42All right.
11:42Y'all give it up for her.
11:43Yeah, you look amazing.
11:46See me afterwards if you want to take this look home.
11:49Just kidding.
11:50All right.
11:52Let's give it up for our next model.
11:53All right, ladies.
11:57So my ladies with the curves, then.
11:58Talk about curves.
11:59You know, there's something about my women that have curves.
12:03Y'all just walk and you just glide and you just look like you're walking on wind at all
12:07times.
12:07I'm not sure what happens, but when you put on clothes and you walk out, you look amazing.
12:12So we're just creating some illusions with this.
12:14As you can see, we have stripes everywhere.
12:17So we have stripes on the earrings as a focal point.
12:20The top has stripes, Tina.
12:22Yes.
12:22And then the bag has stripes.
12:24And we put a simple pair of denim jeans with it.
12:26You don't overdo it.
12:28You mute the shoe out.
12:29You mute the pants out.
12:30And you have an amazing time.
12:32Y'all like this look, my curvy ladies?
12:34And you know doggone well that if you saw this coming your way, you would acknowledge it
12:39as good style.
12:40That's beautiful.
12:42This is fantastic style.
12:43Beautiful style.
12:44Thank you so much.
12:44All right.
12:45And you can get this purse at Nordstrom's as well.
12:49On and off the runway.
12:50Y'all know about on and off the runway boutique?
12:51African-American boutique.
12:54She's amazing.
12:54That's where that top comes from.
12:56Yeah.
12:56Yeah.
12:56That's one of Jay Boland's signatures is that he provides amazing style at affordable prices.
13:03Yes.
13:03I used to spend thousands of dollars on outfits.
13:06Not anymore.
13:07It doesn't make sense, right?
13:10When you see somebody who has on all labels and they still have no style.
13:15Yes.
13:15You always want to be able to create your own style.
13:18You don't let a look wear you.
13:20I don't want to look like I'm representing a brand.
13:22I want to look like I'm representing my own brand at all times.
13:25I want to show people who I am.
13:27And you do that with your clothing.
13:29Yeah.
13:29All right.
13:30Yeah.
13:30All right.
13:31Let's give it up for our next model.
13:34Isn't she fabulous?
13:36All right.
13:36So let me tell you guys about this look.
13:38This is what I like to call boho glam.
13:41And so this is how you mix up that sequin top that you have to match with something else
13:46that you wore to an after five event and you don't know what the heck you're going to do
13:50with it and you spent too much money on it.
13:52So you take that top and you match it up with something in your closet that has some kind
13:56of casualty and denim to it and you just make it yours.
14:00And I put on a brown leather belt around the waist just to kind of give that extra piece
14:05of casualty to it.
14:06You guys feeling it?
14:07Yes.
14:08And this piece was actually made in one day by an amazing designer in the back.
14:13You guys have probably seen her on my page.
14:14Her name is Aretha.
14:16Aretha Fossa from A&R Fashion.
14:18Absolutely amazing.
14:20This piece can come from sizes from a small to 3X.
14:23Give it up for a designer who can make things for everybody.
14:26Yes.
14:27All shapes, all sizes, all curves.
14:29Yes.
14:29That's fantastic.
14:30And so let me tell you what I did with this.
14:32Because she's petite, I opened up the skirt completely so we can see a lot of legs.
14:37Because you don't want her to get lost because we already have the bishop sleeves, which
14:41is a lot of fabric.
14:42We snatched the waistline in, but then this jacket has a lot of texture to it as well.
14:47So if it has so much texture with it and the skirt had been extremely buttoned up all
14:51the way down, then it would have looked like frumpy.
14:54And nobody wants to look frumpy.
14:56So ladies, show those legs and show some skin whenever you're going to be covered completely,
15:01okay?
15:02Just do it in a modest way and you too can be clean, classy, and chic.
15:06Yeah, I love that.
15:08A little bit of skin is always sexy.
15:10Yes, it is.
15:11All right.
15:11Thank you so much.
15:12Okay.
15:14Boho glam.
15:15I'm feeling that.
15:16Y'all feeling that?
15:17Yeah.
15:18Don't y'all hate when you buy stuff?
15:20Oh, wait a minute.
15:20Wait a minute.
15:21Wait a minute.
15:23Wait a minute.
15:24Wait a minute.
15:24Wait one second.
15:27All right.
15:28So moment of silence.
15:30I don't have to talk.
15:30I'm just going to let her do the walking.
15:32And we're going to sit back and enjoy with y'all.
15:36I mean, isn't this fabulous?
15:39I don't have to say a word to you, Tina.
15:41No.
15:42We're not going to say anything until she comes back.
15:44We'll let her have her do her thing.
15:47Fabulous, right?
15:50And she's owning it.
15:52I love it.
15:52You can always tell when someone feels good in the clothing.
15:57Prime example of what it means when you feel good in the look and you can own it.
16:03All right.
16:04She just makes you lose all of your words.
16:07Like, I don't even know what to say looking at her.
16:09And this is what you want.
16:10When you walk in a room, you want for people to stop and stare and try to figure it out.
16:16So what I did with this look is, first of all, let's give it up for this Army fatigue jacket.
16:20That has gone from being a masculine jacket to ultra feminine.
16:26Yes.
16:26So this jacket is actually designed by a fashion junkie out of Detroit, Michigan.
16:34And if you guys saw, raise your hands if you saw what I just did with Tamiya recently.
16:37And Tamiya had on this really cool Prince two-piece outfit.
16:42This is the exact same designer that took pieces and made it into her own.
16:46I absolutely love this.
16:48And I mixed it with a print, Tina.
16:50Yeah.
16:50I love it.
16:51I love that you put the stripes with this Army look.
16:54And it almost, you can almost see the stripes coming through the Army look.
16:59It's so well matched.
17:00And then the way in which you add a pop of color with the purse.
17:04Talk to us about that.
17:04The clutch is amazing.
17:06The clutch comes from Nordstrom's.
17:07The skirt comes from Shop J. Boland.
17:09Raise your hands if you know about Shop J. Boland.
17:12All right.
17:12Thank you, ladies, for the love and support.
17:14We appreciate you guys.
17:15You can get this skirt at Shop J. Boland.
17:18Fashion junkie up top.
17:19All African-American designers.
17:22Y'all give it up.
17:23We need the love and we need that support in our own community that we can push out fabulous things
17:29because we need things that represent our curves, our shapes, and our sizes, and our skin complexions.
17:35All right, ladies?
17:36Can you walk down the runway one more time?
17:39Yeah.
17:40And this look really reminds you that you don't have to be afraid of color.
17:46A pop of color is always amazing.
17:48And that you can put together, as J. has done here and the look before, you can put together what seems like different looks and bring something whole new to the stage.
18:01All right.
18:01And here's our last look of the evening, of this afternoon.
18:05Now, y'all know I like a lot of movement, all right?
18:08And what I said was, like Nene Lee said, I said what I said.
18:12I want you guys to know, this is a formal gown that we've taken and we've made it casual.
18:19So you can take formal gowns and make it into something extremely casual.
18:23So I put a casual belt with this, and then we put one of my really cool hats.
18:28Y'all know your boy likes hats, right?
18:30So I layered this with hats.
18:31It was a great belt.
18:32And we also, what we did was, because the dress was extremely long in the front, we just took some double-sided tape and taped it up in the front so that you could actually walk comfortably.
18:42Because most formal gowns hit the floor and they drag the floor.
18:46You don't have to have things dragging in front of you, but ladies, it ain't nothing like seeing somebody walk in a room with a train and they know how to own it.
18:53Y'all feeling this look?
18:54Give them one more walk, baby.
18:56Y'all give it up, give it up, give it up.
18:59Lots of movement.
18:59So take your gown, take your prints, and make it do what it's supposed to do.
19:06All right.
19:07So Jay Bolin says, get a belt.
19:10Make sure you're dealing with three focal points.
19:14And what else, Jay?
19:15So make sure that you have a snatch waistline and you can't breathe.
19:18And make sure that you get your foundations right.
