00:00You guys, please give it up for Dapper Dan.
00:04Come on.
00:05Bring some noise, y'all.
00:06Come on, Dapper Dan.
00:09My man.
00:11My man.
00:13Y'all, I can't even, please sit down.
00:17I am so happy to be here today.
00:20I finally get an opportunity.
00:22I know I'm supposed to be doing Q&As,
00:23and I don't have a lot of time, but I just
00:25got to say one thing.
00:28You guys, I mean, I have been a fashion wagon,
00:31but this wagon would not be here today if it wasn't for Black
00:35Twitter, and I know who Black Twitter is, man.
00:37It's the women out here, man.
00:39It's our women who got us here today, man.
00:41We're going to talk about that Black Twitter moment.
00:43I know what you guys, you guys know what we're talking about,
00:45but we're going to talk about it.
00:46Yeah.
00:47But we are so honored to have you here, Dup.
00:51I'm so honored to be here.
00:52You know we love you.
00:53Black folk, Black culture, Black everything loves you
00:56because you did so much for us, and you did so much for the
00:59culture, and you did so much for fashion, right?
01:01If people aren't, you know, we have all generations here.
01:04If people aren't familiar with you and your designs,
01:06how would you describe your designs to folk?
01:10I would describe my designs as blackenizing luxury fashion,
01:17because it wasn't meant for us.
01:19But now, they'll come to us so that we can show them what it
01:23really should look like.
01:26Amen.
01:26I see them fists going up.
01:28I love it.
01:29I've been working.
01:29I was underground for a while until Jay-Z told me, he said,
01:33Dap, we really need, people really need to know that you're still
01:37around, because I was doing stuff for Jay-Z and all the rap artists.
01:40In fact, I was the best kept secret.
01:42But here's what I want the audience to know.
01:44It's like, how do these thoughts that I do, and how does the style
01:48that I develop come about?
01:49Now, there's two approaches to fashions, right?
01:52And one approach is like, a designer, he will go out and design
01:56things and hope you like them.
01:59But that's never been my approach.
02:00My approach has been, my store was open 24 hours a day, 365 days,
02:06for 10 years straight.
02:07I never closed.
02:09But the major-
02:10Wait, wait, never closed.
02:11Never closed.
02:12Never closed your store.
02:13Always open.
02:13Never closed.
02:14And for 10 years straight.
02:16But the secret to what I did was not to sit somewhere
02:21and just design clothes.
02:22Everybody who came into my store, I would sit them down
02:26and find out what they want to look like, you know?
02:29And where designers collaborate with other designers,
02:33my collaboration has always been with the people who come
02:36to my store, with people of color and how they want to look.
02:39So the development of what I'm doing today and how I got here
02:43today has been about us.
02:45Always about us.
02:46You're now, you know, where you're now being back in the spotlight.
02:51Like you said, you had a moment back then, you went kind of underground, you were still
02:56working, definitely still working.
02:58And now the world wants to know what else we can expect from you.
03:02Well, okay.
03:03I'm glad you actually do.
03:05I was born and raised in Harlem.
03:06And let me tell you something about Harlem.
03:07Harlem is the sum total of all the South.
03:10We have neighborhoods with people from different parts of the South.
03:14So I have my memoirs coming out and it's going to talk about the history of Harlem and how
03:20it developed.
03:21And I want everyone to know that we're all a part of Harlem and the culture that has sprang
03:26from Harlem.
03:27Dap and I actually live on the same block.
03:28Yeah.
03:29She's my neighbor.
03:30We didn't even know that.
03:31Yeah.
03:32We started like really vibing, but we live on the same block.
03:35It's amazing.
03:36Yeah.
03:37And we need for y'all more of y'all to come.
03:38We have people from people of color from every part of the South.
03:41When you hear about Harlem, we're not tribal.
03:44We're from everywhere the South.
03:45That's what made us so unique and gave us this powerful culture.
03:48And Julie, I'm glad you came because we need more of you guys to come.
03:52You're going to be open and welcome.
03:53I'm going to take you on a tour.
03:55We need y'all less because this is y'all.
03:57We are y'all and y'all are.
03:58Who's been to Harlem here?
03:59Who's been to Harlem?
04:00Harlem's dope, right?
04:02You all have to come to Harlem.
04:03It is like, oh, we got a real Harlemite over there.
04:07Okay.
04:08I see you.
04:09I see you.
04:10Right here too in the front.
04:11We got some real Harlemites.
04:12Yeah, we got real Harlemites.
04:13So you know you know Dap.
04:14Yeah.
04:15Everybody knows Dap in Harlem.
04:16I can't walk down the street with Dap without people being like, Dap.
04:20And like, he knows everyone.
04:21He is the mayor of Harlem.
04:23Now you are the mayor of luxury fashion for the black culture, my man.
04:28I mean, you always have been.
04:29But now you are back on the top and everyone knows you.
04:31And we celebrate you and we love you and thank you for being here.
04:34Oh, thank you, Judy.
04:35Thank you so much.
04:36Thank you for being here.
04:37Oh, thank you, Judy.
04:38Thank you so much.
04:43Thanks for listening.
04:45Help us.
