00:00Today on Essence Live, it is Throwback Thursday.
00:06Will Packer dishes on why his Roots reboot is needed now more than ever.
00:10I have an old school, new school dance-off with Miles Brown from Black-ish.
00:15Tyler James Williams re-enact the classic scene from Friday.
00:18And we're going to play our very first edition of Throwback Trivia.
00:22Yep, that's right, and this should be good.
00:24But right now, let's go back in time for the hot list
00:27and check out the biggest stories you were buzzing about back in the day.
00:33So, remember that scene in the People vs. O.J. Simpson American Crime story
00:37that showed O.J.'s defense team changing all the decor in his house
00:40to make it look more ethnic so Black jurors could relate to him?
00:44Now, how true was that?
00:45Well, back in 1996, O.J.'s lead attorney, Johnny Cochran, told the San Francisco Gate,
00:49I never, ever went out there to look at any photographs or take anything off the walls.
00:54That was not even an issue with us.
00:55Judge Ito went through asking the housekeeper,
00:58was this photograph always here?
00:59Or saying, cut that fireplace off.
01:01Whatever the staff did, they never discussed it with us.
01:05But that scene where F. Lee Bailey tricks Christopher Darden into having O.J. try on the gloves?
01:09Cochran admitted that was true, saying, quote, trial is war.
01:13In April of 2002, a young singer from Long Island, New York,
01:20had three top ten songs on the Billboard charts simultaneously
01:23and sold over 500,000 copies of her debut album, which featured this hit.
01:28Yep, I'm talking about Ashanti.
01:54Since then, she's sold over 27 million records worldwide
01:57and was recently honored by the Guinness Book of World Records
01:59as the fastest-selling debut artist ever.
02:03Now, while Ashanti was breaking musical records,
02:06the rise of YouTube and social media proved that you didn't need actual talent to sing.
02:10Remember this?
02:11I need you to make it stop.
02:33That 2007 video by Tay Zonday spawned over 4,200 covers
02:38and to date, get this, has over 108 million views.
02:43That's ridiculous.
02:44But next up, I speak with Hollywood producer Will Packer
02:46about how he's making old school new again
02:48with a reboot of the epic TV saga, Roots.
02:51It's Thursday, May 19th, and Essence Live starts now.
03:02If you're just tuning in, this is Essence Live,
03:04the best damn digital talk show, if we must say so ourselves.
03:07Remember to use the hashtag Essence Live to join the conversation
03:10or email us anything, anytime at EssenceLive at Essence.com.
03:15Okay, coming up, we're going to play our inaugural throwback trivia game
03:18where two teams vie for the title of throwback king and queen.
03:21Plus, I'll face off with Black-ish star Myles Brown
03:24to see who has the best dance moves.
03:26But first, I recently sat down with Hollywood producer Will Packer
03:28to talk about why he wanted to remake Roots.
03:31Check it out.
03:32This is probably the thing that I'm most proud of,
03:35the most fearful about, the most important thing I've done,
03:39and the hardest.
03:41Why fearful?
03:42You know, not fearful for me personally,
03:46but other people are fearful of what this could mean.
03:50This is a project that already has a legacy.
03:52True.
03:53It's iconic.
03:53It's been done.
03:55The story's been told.
03:56So what I get about it is,
03:58why would you retell Roots?
03:59Like, why go back and possibly mess that up?
04:03And the answer to me is simple.
04:05Because it's time.
04:06Right.
04:07Because there's a whole generation of people that don't know the story.
04:09Because you think you know it,
04:11and a lot of times people go,
04:13yeah, I get it.
04:13Roots, I understand.
04:15I know the story.
04:16Slavery, yeah.
04:17But no, that's not it.
04:18If we're really going to move forward as a people,
04:21as a people, I mean as black people, as a black community,
04:24and I mean as an American society.
04:26As a movement, yeah.
04:27If we're really going to move forward,
04:29we actually have to know from whence we came.
04:33We have to look at it with an unflinching eye
04:35at some of the harsh atrocities,
04:38some of the more amazing things.
04:40We have to look at it and be honest with ourselves as a country
04:44about what our roots are.
04:47Definitely, definitely.
04:47And you mentioned that so many people were saying,
04:49well, why would you want to touch this, Roots?
04:51It's so iconic.
04:52And then you have films such as 12 Years a Slave.
04:56Yes.
04:56And other pieces from that period
04:58where sometimes our community can give a little backlash.
05:01Like, why are we telling that story?
05:03Right.
05:03So, given the Black Lives Matter movement,
05:05so much is happening in our current climate,
05:07what type of connection are you trying to make with Roots
05:10and what's happening present day?
05:11You know what's interesting is that so much is happening now.
05:14You bring up BLM.
05:15And, of course, we're still suffering the reverberations of what happened in the 1800s.
05:24The manifestations of the fact that this country was built on the blacks of slaves,
05:31when you look at some of the systemic oppression that happens now,
05:36it is directly related to our journey.
05:39And we need to know what that journey is.
05:41We need to know when we have things that happen and there's social protest or sometimes violent uprisings
05:50and there are angry youth, Black boys, Black girls in the streets,
05:57they need to know that they came from warriors.
06:01They need to know that they are the product of survivors.
06:05They are, in their DNA, in their blood, are people who were in Africa and survived being sold into the Middle Passage
06:15and survived that incredible journey to become slaves in America
06:21and survive that all the way through.
06:23They are descended from survivors.
06:26And a lot of times I think that we don't really know and understand what that means and the weight of that.
06:34And I think that if we all did, it would affect the way that we approach some of the challenges that we have in today's society.
06:43Most difficult scene from Roots for you?
06:45There are a couple of rape scenes, and that's very challenging.
06:55Any depiction of rape is very, very tough for me personally, for any civil, moral person.
07:03But it was authentic. It kept it real. We needed to. We had to.
07:07And you just mentioned you haven't been in Hollywood, as you say, too long.
07:11But you've kicked a lot of butt, taken a lot of names in the box office.
07:15You've done a large amount of work.
07:16I've kicked ass. Can we curse on Essence Live?
07:18Yeah, let's go on and say it.
07:19How does that work? Let's go on and say it.
07:20Did it just get bleeped? I don't know what happened.
07:20I mean, you know, it's okay. We're in a safe space.
07:23We're doing okay.
07:24But, you know, you came in and you kicked the door down and you're doing some great work.
07:28So I have to ask, have you experienced racism?
07:32And can you share any of that?
07:33Oh, no question.
07:33What can you share with us about maybe a particular experience or something where you're like,
07:37oh, damn, this is real in Hollywood?
07:38You know, what's interesting is that Hollywood is one of the most liberal industries in the world.
07:47Yet, there is no question that it is a system that people of color and just minorities in general
07:56have not been able to reach the highest levels.
07:59And that is because it's a club and it's a closed door club in many aspects.
08:03So for me, just the fact that I am one of very, very few black producers to have had the success that I've had,
08:15I would love to attribute it to just how great I am, you know, and just everything that I do well.
08:20But the reality is that there are other people out there that should have that shot
08:24and should have the opportunity and haven't had it yet.
08:27Now, for me, it was about being independent.
08:30It was about starting off and being successful without Hollywood.
08:33That's how I got the attention.
08:34Build it and they will come type of mentality.
08:35Absolutely.
08:36That's what worked for me.
08:38There are a lot of people out there that are banging on those doors.
08:41And, you know, there just, there shouldn't be just one, you know, Will Packer.
08:44There should be, you know, four, five, six, seven, eight, you know.
08:48But until that happens, I'm going to try to keep blazing the trail,
08:51try to keep working with up-and-coming filmmakers and letting them work on my sets,
08:55hiring up-and-coming actors and writers and directors.
08:59And hosts.
08:59Because that's important.
09:00Absolutely.
09:01Yes.
09:01I just want to throw that out.
09:02What is that?
09:02That's my hair.
09:03I have a ponytail.
09:04Is that the deal?
09:04In my head, I have a ponytail and a swoop bag.
09:07And you flip it.
09:07I do.
09:08Yes.
09:09It makes me feel good at night.
09:10You know what?
09:10Do it.
09:10It works for me.
09:11I am not mad at all.
09:13And now I heard that Think Like a Man is coming to TV.
09:16Is that true?
09:17The Think Like a Man TV show.
09:19Yes.
09:19It was sold as a pilot, myself, Steve Harvey, and Tim Story, the director.
09:25We still don't know exactly where, when, and how.
09:28But yes, it was, you know.
09:30Did you like the movie?
09:31Yeah, I did.
09:32But you know, that's tricky.
09:33Whenever films transition to television or vice versa, TV to film, it can get a little...
09:39So there's this movie called Uncle Buck.
09:41Do you remember that?
09:41I do recall Uncle Buck, yes.
09:43Okay, so I have made that into a TV show.
09:46And it is starring Mike Epps and Nia Long.
09:51And it is the small screen retelling of the Uncle Buck movie.
09:56Absolutely.
09:57It's hilarious.
09:58It works.
09:59We got it right.
10:00It airs on ABC this summer.
10:02And so sometimes when you do it right, you know, it's a good thing.
10:06So basically you're saying you ain't never scared real quick.
10:08Is that what you're trying to say?
10:09You can't be in my seat.
10:10You can't be scared.
10:11I go hard.
10:13I have to, you know.
10:14You have to be fearless.
10:15You know, if you're going to go and you're going to tackle iconic titles like an Uncle Buck
10:19and even real iconic titles like Roots, you can't go in timid.
10:24You can't go in afraid of doing it right or not doing it right, doing it wrong.
10:28You just got to go and give 110%, period.
10:30You can't worry about what people say, people saying what you should do or shouldn't do.
10:34You'd be home.
10:35If somebody's telling you what you should or should not do, then they are holding you back, period.
10:42I like that.
10:43Yes.
10:43That's a tweetable.
10:44Y'all should tweet that.
10:45That is.
10:45We need a hashtag.
10:46Give me a hashtag to put at the end of it.
10:48Hashtag day at home.
10:49Hashtag stay woke.
10:50Hashtag be at home.
10:50You not at home.
10:51Day home.
10:52Hashtag flip your ponytail.
10:54No, and also I have to ask you because you're Essence Family.
10:57Absolutely.
10:57And you met your wife at Essence Festival and proposed.
11:00You kidding me?
11:01I love Essence Fest.
11:02I love Essence Fest.
11:03I met her, I don't know what year it was now, 08, 09.
11:10It was a long time ago.
11:11Honey, it's all right.
11:11And if she asks, you remember.
11:12Yes.
11:12He remembers.
11:13And I was down there with Idris Elba.
11:15And she was down there with the company that he was.
11:18She was there with Coors Light.
11:20Coors Light was hosting a boat crew.
11:21Idris Elba was the host.
11:23Okay.
11:24And so we both ended up on this boat.
11:26And Idris got off and her company got off before it sailed.
11:31But she and I both were trying to get off before the boat actually left the dock.
11:35Because we were going to go on, do our thing, and then leave.
11:38We hadn't met each other.
11:38Okay.
11:39We both got stuck on the boat.
11:40Now, that's destiny.
11:41That's universe.
11:42We got stuck on the same boat that we were trying to get off of.
11:45Idris was gone with his crew.
11:47Her company and her co-workers left.
11:49We both ended up on that boat.
11:50Met on the boat.
11:50And then you saw her like this?
11:51Four years later.
11:52I saw her like that and she didn't want to have anything good.
11:55If we're going to keep it real, she was not thinking about me.
11:59There was a lot of dudes on the boat.
12:00They were all trying to holler at me, you know?
12:02Gotcha.
12:02And my wife is fine.
12:03She got it going on.
12:04And you know, a lot of people...
12:05She wasn't thinking about me.
12:06It's okay, though.
12:06It's okay, because that's all history.
12:08I want her over.
12:08That's all history.
12:10And a lot of folks now come down to Essence Festival trying to find love.
12:12Do you have any tips for the fellas?
12:14It's there.
12:14Do you have any tips for them?
12:15For the fellas.
12:16First of all, you know, it's a big party.
12:19It's a good time, okay?
12:21It is a good time.
12:21You got to kind of try to stay sober on Bourbon Street, guys.
12:23You know, you're not going to catch what you think you're going to catch after four hurricanes.
12:27Because after four hurricanes, you're going to catch something.
12:30But in the next morning, when you wake up, it ain't what you thought it was.
12:32So my advice to the guys is that go slow, okay?
12:36Go slow.
12:37Go on Bourbon, but don't go hard.
12:40Go to the concerts and the convention center.
12:43That's where the good ones are.
12:45The quality women at Essence and the convention center, they're collecting all their little
12:49free bags and listening to the Ayala seminars.
12:51That's where they are.
12:52Then you can go where the ratchets are on Bourbon and get drunk later.
12:57This is official Essence.
13:00I'm lying.
13:00This is not official.
13:02Essence has not endorsed any of this.
13:03But you're definitely dropping gems.
13:06That's a gem.
13:06Just saying.
13:07So just write that down.
13:08Just saying.
13:08Will Power Packer, thank you so very much for joining us.
13:10I had a ball.
13:11Is it over?
13:12Are we done?
13:12It is over.
13:13But you can come back anytime.
13:14I want to come back.
13:15You can come back any single time.
13:15Definitely want to come back.
13:16All right.
13:18Roots, Memorial Day weekend.
13:20Definitely.
13:21Oh, and in the control room, they're saying, can you bring Idris with you?
13:25But watch Roots.
13:26Yes.
13:27A&E Television Network.
13:28A&E Lifetime History.
13:30It is going to be simulcast.
13:31It's really important.
13:32A lot of people are waiting to see if this is going to be successful from a right standpoint.
13:36And it will be.
13:37It will be.
13:37I challenge us to support this.
13:39It definitely will be.
13:43Right now, I'm joined by Miles Brown, who you know from the hit show,
13:45Black-ish.
13:46Yes.
13:47I hear you're quite the dancer.
13:48Yes.
13:49I fancy myself a dancer.
13:50All right, all right.
13:51So we're going to have to have us a little challenge.
13:53Okay.
13:54So some old school and some new school dancers, their names are going to appear in this screen
13:57right behind me.
13:58Okay.
13:58We'll see what you got.
13:59Let's drop the music.
14:01Oh.
14:02The Running Man.
14:02Okay.
14:03Oh, that's my generation.
14:05You got it.
14:05Get it.
14:06Get it.
14:07Go.
14:08Oh, this is like house party.
14:09House party.
14:10Okay.
14:11That was good cardio, actually.
14:13That's good cardio.
14:14Okay.
14:15Let's see what this second is.
14:15Oh, the one.
14:17Oh.
14:19And I have to drop my head, too.
14:21Uh-huh.
14:21See, my knees don't go that low anymore.
14:24You got it.
14:24The hands.
14:25It's all in the hands.
14:26Oh.
14:26The Bernie.
14:27The Bernie.
14:28Let's get it.
14:31Can I bounce with it?
14:32Yeah.
14:32Or is that messing it up?
14:34Or I just have to keep an equal rhythm?
14:35Yeah.
14:36Okay.
14:36That works for me.
14:37All right.
14:38The Millie Rock.
14:38Let's get it.
14:42Don't hurt him.
14:43Oh.
14:43Oh, and he changed the levels.
14:45He changed the levels.
14:46Next one.
14:47The Dougie.
14:48I know you can Dougie.
14:49Get it?
14:50Oh, the sprinkler.
14:50The sprinkler.
14:51I don't even know the sprinkler.
14:52The sprinkler.
14:53It's like the, it's like, what do you call it?
14:54Like this?
14:55Or, yeah.
14:56Oh.
14:56Oh, you got to clear space to do the sprinkler.
14:59Because you can take somebody else out.
15:01The stanky leg.
15:02Stanky leg.
15:04This I can do.
15:04Do the stanky leg.
15:06This doesn't sweat out your hair.
15:09Oh, slow motion.
15:11Don't hurt.
15:11Miles, you know what?
15:12I need to keep you on speed dial for dance moves.
15:14Tootsie roll.
15:15And here's our last one.
15:16Tootsie roll.
15:16I know this one.
15:17Do you know the tootsie roll?
15:18No, I don't.
15:18Now, I personally like to break into one leg at a time.
15:22Because you have to warn the people that it's coming.
15:24Kind of rock to side to side with it.
15:26So, Miles, I mean, can you freestyle for me a little bit?
15:28All right.
15:29I know you got some moves.
15:30Oh.
15:32I'm going to learn how to do these things.
15:35I feel like you have to be young and flexible to do this.
15:38Ah.
15:40That was awesome.
15:41Thank you so much, Miles.
15:42Thank you so very, very much for coming.
15:44I had so much fun.
15:45Join us for more Essence Live.

16:30or some ketchup.
16:31You want to borrow my car.
16:33Hell no.
16:33borrow my car. Hell no. No, no, no. Get the hell on. Well, let me borrow a joint. You need to borrow
16:40a job, you broke ass. Always trying to smoke somebody's s**t. No, you get the hell on, Felicia.

17:17got two teams ready to battle it out for the titles of throwback king and queen. I'll start
17:21tomorrow, right? Go ahead and introduce yourselves. My name is Shameka, and I'm representing Harlem.
17:26My name is Purcell, and I'm representing Brooklyn. And we are Purple Rain.
17:30Okay, they got a high five and a handshake. All right, and to the left, you are?
17:34Uh, Courtney, representing Queens. Nicole, and I'm from Jersey.
17:38And your team name? Mo' Money, Mo' Problems.
17:40Eight. Oh, all right. Okay, so I'm sure everyone here thinks they have what it takes to win.
17:44Absolutely. My name is Dana, I'm representing Louisiana, and here are the rules. Okay, we've got
17:49three rounds, each increasing in difficulty. You'll face off with someone from the opposite team,

17:57you must ring the bell. However, if you answer incorrectly, the other team will have the chance
18:02to answer and steal that point. Each question is worth one point, and whichever team has the most
18:07points at the end of the game wins. All right, so Courtney and Shameka, you're up first. Keep your
18:12hands on the edge of the table. No cheating, Courtney. All right, you ready? Okay, here we go.
