00:00Every black girl in the world, your magic is that you are you.
00:16Become clear about who that is, be honest about who that is, and be willing to walk in every
00:24situation in your life being exactly who that is.
00:29My vision of Black Girl Magic is being the spitfire that you know you can be.
00:35No matter what anybody thinks, you see who you want to become and you see who you are
00:40and you're proud of it.
00:42Black Girl Magic is simply power and strength.
00:45You can't find it anywhere else other than inside yourself.
00:49My name is Joy Madison.
00:50I am owner and trainer at Eat, Sleep, Sweat Functional Fitness in Los Angeles, California.
00:54My name is Patrice Dodd. I am the founder and the head coach for the Los Angeles Aquanim Synchronized
01:01Swimming Team here in South Central Los Angeles.
01:04My name is Imijai Brooks and I swim with the unsinkables of La Mirada.
01:09Swimming and water polo, it's not, you don't see any of us in the sport.
01:12When we first started, we looked a little bit different from everybody else, but that's
01:15not anything to be ashamed of. It's something to be proud of.
01:18A lot of people don't particularly know what synchronized swimming is.
01:22It teaches for girls to be graceful, to be beautiful, to be strong, to be athletic.
01:26It is the best exercise that exists. Low impact. It's something you can always participate in.
01:34You need to be healthy. Healthy in your mind, healthy in body, healthy in spirit.
01:38When you exercise and through your diet, that's a communication and conversation with your body.
01:42So the more you can get in touch with your body, you can be in communication with your body
01:45and through fitness and working out, the more healthy you will be, the more in tune with
01:48your personal gifts you will be, and then the better you can serve people and walk in
01:51your purpose, whatever that may be.
01:54I would always try to get my friends to swim with me or, you know, come participate on the team.
01:59And after about two weeks, it's like, oh, my hair, oh, my hair.
02:02And I hate that we let our hair get in the way of that.
02:06Curly and natural is beautiful, and I was always okay with that.
02:10If we can get beyond, you know, the hair and whatever other things that we're telling ourselves
02:14about why we shouldn't swim, I think it's a great place for us to flourish.
02:19You can really do whatever you want to do.
