The Girls of ArtHoe Collective on What Black Girl Magic Means to Them
Transcript
00:00I grew up surrounded by black women. I had my grandmother, I had my aunt, I had my great aunt,
00:19and it's just magic. That's what they are. Black girls are the future. Black girls are magic.
00:26To me, it means black women are the mothers of everyone. They don't want to admit it,
00:33but women really do run the black community, so it's really, really cool to see that.
00:37Were you spitting truth?
00:40Yeah, so it's really cool to see that recognized.
00:43I like the black girls are magic statement because we're put down all the time. Everybody
00:49hates us, so we don't even do anything wrong. They're like, oh, black girls, this, black girls,
00:53that. And if you're a dark-skinned black girl or a fat black girl, you're not even a thing.
01:00Black girl magic is like a manifestation of your own power. Stuff what you guys thought. This is
01:05what I am, and I get to define myself, so here it is. And I think that's really dope.
01:10As black kids, we have to grow up a little bit faster than everybody else because we're conflicted
01:22with the idea of racism, and then if you're a girl, you have to misogyny, like, don't dress that way,
01:26don't sit that way. We can't do a lot of things that, let's say, our white counterparts are able to
01:31do. And it's just like, I want to be carefree. I want to run around down south with no shoes on,
01:36and my hair in an afro. I just want to be happy. It really hurts me and it bothers me that I can't
01:40be the alternative, weird black girl that I am. It would be just harder for everyone in general,
01:45for society to continue as is with people maintaining their privilege if black girls
01:50were allowed to be complex. All of those things become, like, incredibly difficult when you allow
01:55someone to actually manifest their truth and, like, what they're good at.
01:58We're not waiting for anyone to validate us. Like, we're not waiting for you to be like,
02:05oh, word, I agree with you guys, because we don't really care that much at the end of the day.
02:09Like, the amounts of, like, criticism that have, like, arisen from just trying to be ourselves and
02:15help other people be themselves, that's what agency is and that's what being a carefree black kid is.
02:21Like, you don't need someone else's external validation.
