00:00The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is really about a daughter's quest to know
00:13herself. She wasn't trying to make any other discovery other than who was my
00:20mother and what did her cells really mean to the world and how does that
00:26affect me and my family? So I think the powerful dynamic of that, yet the
00:32intimacy of that, is what makes it such a beautiful story.
00:35Any great character, the thing that's the most compelling and the only reason we're
00:39telling the story is because of the universal truths. How do you prepare for
00:42that? You just, I think you just open up and tell the truth. You just serve it.
00:45You just show up.
00:46You know from the very beginning when we sat down with the Lacks family, I said to
00:51them, look, you know, your mother and grandmother have left a great legacy for
00:56you. There's no way a movie can bring that alive. What the movie can be is a
01:01catalyst to spark the energy of that in such a way that people will ask
01:07questions, they will think differently.
01:09You know, what I'm hoping is that people will want to tell more of their own
01:15stories. You know, what goes on in your family goes on in you.
