Lalitpur (Uttar Pradesh): Around 150 women from Khitwans village in Lalitpur district went on the rampage against a local desi and foreign liquor shop, smashing bottles worth lakhs of rupees and throwing them onto the road in protest.

The incident took place on February 2–3, near the Mahrauni–Lalitpur road, where angry women, armed with sticks and spades, broke open the liquor shop, dragged out crates and destroyed them, leading to traffic disruption in the area.

The women alleged that the liquor shop’s location within the village had led to rising alcoholism, domestic violence and crime, and said repeated complaints and memorandums submitted to the district administration had been ignored, forcing them to escalate their protest.

Police reached the spot and managed to pacify the crowd. A case has been registered based on the shop owner’s complaint, though no immediate arrests were reported.

Officials said the situation is under control. Similar anti-liquor protests have been reported earlier from nearby villages, including Geron in Jakhlaun, where women had blocked roads demanding closure of liquor shops.
