Bihar Shock: Two Daughters Perform Mother’s Last Rites Alone After Village Turns Away

Chhapra (Bihar): A deeply distressing incident from Jawainian village near Madhora, around 22 km from Chhapra, has triggered widespread outrage. Two young sisters were forced to carry their mother’s body and perform her last rites on their own after no one from the village came forward to help.

Babita Devi passed away a few days ago. Her husband, Ravindra Singh, had died about one-and-a-half years earlier, leaving the family in extreme poverty. Since then, the family had reportedly been living in isolation, struggling without social or financial support.

After Babita Devi’s death, villagers allegedly did not assist with funeral arrangements. With no relatives or neighbours stepping in, the two daughters gathered courage, carried their mother’s body, arranged the funeral pyre and performed the cremation rituals themselves.
The hardship continues even after the funeral. With no money, the sisters are now going door-to-door seeking help to perform the thirteenth-day Shraddha rituals. Locals claim prolonged poverty led to the family’s social neglect.

Activists and residents have urged the district administration to provide immediate financial aid, food support and long-term rehabilitation for the orphaned girls. The incident has gone viral on social media, with many calling it a grim reminder of growing social insensitivity and demanding government intervention.
