"We cut up jeans before cut up jeans were in," the hip hop duo says.
Transcript
00:00I met Pep in the lunchroom. We never went to class.
00:03She always say that, but I'm Jamaican.
00:05No, she didn't.
00:06Jamaicans just go to class.
00:07You know we have 17 jobs.
00:08I went to class.
00:09That's a lie.
00:10We loved each other, as you can see.
00:13And we became joined at the hip as friends.
00:24We say we brought fun fashion and femininity
00:27to hip-hop for women,
00:28because it was at a time when women were dressing more like boys.
00:31We didn't have stylists.
00:32And when shopping ourselves.
00:34And for the record, if you check out our video
00:36and our Shake Your Thing,
00:38we cut up our jeans before cut-up jeans were in.
00:45Our most famous picture is our eight-ball jackets
00:47with our spandex and our boots that we got from Fava,
00:51mind you, and our kente hats.
00:54How all that came together, I don't have a clue,
00:57but it worked.
00:58And the famous asymmetrical haircut
01:00actually came from an experience that Pep had
01:03with her sister who was practicing on her hair
01:06from beauty school.
01:07The whole side of my head burnt out.
01:09And then I called, because we had like a show or something,
01:12and I was like, oh my God, my sister just burned my hair.
01:14And then, you know, I went to her,
01:16and then we fixed it up and shaved the side of my hair.
01:18And then she shaved.
01:19We shaved the side.
01:20And then we put three lines in it.
01:22I do look back on stuff and definitely go, what in the world were we thinking?
01:28Like, why did we think that went together?
01:31There was a shirling that June Ambrose put on me
01:33that reminded me of a shirling that she had back in the day actually
01:38that was too small for her and too tight,
01:41and the sleeves were up to here,
01:43but she refused to give that jacket up.
01:45Because one of my boyfriends bought it for me,
01:48and he bought it too small,
01:50but I was not giving it back because I was like,
01:53I don't know if he gonna get, you know, replace it.
01:56But I wanted that shirling.
01:57Fashion is so much fun though.
01:59You know, yeah.
02:00If you look at it, like when I pull it up,
02:06even if you Google it, it's like the 90s, the now.
02:11You can't get away from it.
02:12That style.
02:13Everything comes back, right?
02:14And it comes back in a more up-to-date chic way.
