3 Ways To Style Flared Jeans

00:03Not really sure what's inside, but I am always down for a styling challenge.

00:07Okay, looks like we got a pair of jeans.

00:12They are a nice skinny flare.

00:15I just want to like kick.

00:17I'm actually not really sure how to define my personal style.

00:32I like one thing at least about all of my outfits to be a little off.

00:36I think it adds a little fun.

00:38It makes it uniquely me.

00:39I love to pair classic pieces with things that are a little kooky and out there, you

00:46know, to keep things spicy.

00:47Love bold colors.

00:49Love fun textures, fun patterns.

00:52Love a layered moment, even though I am a sweaty girl, so it doesn't always work out too well.

00:57But for the look, I'll do it.

01:04I was a little anxious opening the box because I was like, what's going on here?

01:08What do we got going on?

01:09I liked them.

01:10Like it made me think of the 70s.

01:12They're from Madewell.

01:14They are a nice skinny flare.

01:17I'm loving the wash of these jeans.

01:20It is called the Calvino wash.

01:22And I think it's that perfect in between newness and lived in realness that you're always looking

01:28for in pair of jeans.

01:31Most of my jeans are light wash, black or white.

01:35So like I did have a little moment of being like, okay, what do we do with her?

01:39I like to try everything on first, just like with a white t-shirt and socks.

01:44Just kind of just see like what I'm working with.

01:46It's not like I've never worn a pair of flared pants before in my life, but it's not something I normally style.

01:52Flare has always been such a favorite style of mine because it's so fun.

01:57It's so flattering on so many different figures.

02:00I mean, I already feel so lean and mean in these.

02:04I just want to like kick.

02:06Ha!

02:07For the most part, I don't like to do loose loose.

02:11So given that I had a flared bottom, it's like, okay, I have to go tighter on top.

02:17I'm thinking I want to do a corset moment, but it is the dead of winter.

02:22So actually, okay, so to start, let's get a good base.

02:25A white turtleneck is the perfect base, so I'm not freezing.

02:29So I pulled a corset out of my closet, but all I have was like this brown one.

02:33But now I'm wondering if this is going to be too plain.

02:37My first instinct was to wear a denim shirt with these jeans.

02:42It's not really giving me the drama that I'm looking for.

02:45I just came up with like a bunch of images and like types of styles I wanted to channel.

02:50Like a seventies French girl, like Jane Birkin.

02:53I love this top.

02:54It's one of my favorite scores of all time.

02:57Jean Paul Gaultier from one of his like sailor collections.

03:01And I'm actually really liking this.

03:02It's very basic.

03:03I did think this necklace was a important addition just so it's not too boring.

03:09Gives me a little bit more personality.

03:11I definitely see this as an outfit on the go.

03:13So I think a really good piece of outerwear with some really nice layering is the way to go.

03:21I also didn't want to veer into costume territory.

03:24I'm not mad at it necessarily, but I do feel a little bit starsky and hutch in this outfit.

03:30So I really went for it with like a seventies vibe here.

03:34Don't know how I feel about this belt.

03:36I need to like marinate and think on it.

03:38I added a jacket.

03:39I think this is really cool.

03:41I'm not sure if this brown on brown, chocolate brown, orangey brown are going together.

03:48Because the pants are like nice and skinny.

03:51Maybe you want something that has some volume up top just so you're not completely form fitting head to toe.

03:57It's weird.

03:58It's fun.

03:59It's vintage.

04:00I also added this little pearly necklace.

04:05That's kind of what makes it fun.

04:06Like why would you wear pearls?

04:08Lady on top, cowboy on bottom.

04:10But I'm kind of into it.

04:15I feel good.

04:16I feel really good.

04:17I feel cute.

04:18So since the jeans have a flare, I wanted to go tight on top.

04:23So I have this dress and it kind of has like that corset silhouette.

04:28And it's quite thin.

04:30So it was really easy to tuck in.

04:33I wanted to add a bit of interest on top.

04:35So I went with a layer of three necklaces and then wanted to keep it going with more gold accessories.

04:42There's something about it that really is like easy on the eyes for me.

04:45And I also love the shapes that I created.

04:47The flare is kind of echoing the way that this belt cinches this shirt.

04:52I put these cherry earrings on.

04:55They don't totally match, but they also don't totally clash.

04:58Feels right up my alley.

04:59When people think about jeans, they think jeans and t-shirt, sneakers, call it a day.

05:04But when you layer things on in a really interesting and thoughtful way, you can add so much more to your outfit.

05:10The one word I would use to describe this outfit is easy.

05:13Okay, so like functionally, I would say resourceful because I'm wearing a dress as a top.

05:18Aesthetically, I would say we're going to pretend this is one word and that there's a hyphen in the middle.

05:23We're going to say polished funk.

05:26Uh, eclectic?

05:28The one challenge I came across when picking out this outfit was what to do with the shirt.

05:33You know, these jeans do sit a little higher on my waist.

05:36So I wasn't sure if I wanted a tucked in moment or a loosey-goosey moment.

05:41So as I referenced before, Jane Birkin was like the first thing that came to my head.

05:45And she wore a lot of button downs.

05:47And then I thought about what if I wore something like really big.

05:51So I grabbed one of my husband's shirts, which I wear a lot.

05:55By the way, his closet is my closet.

05:57And it needed like a little something.

05:59It was falling a little flat, but I liked the length.

06:02My everyday makeup is typically just like brown eyeshadow, brown eyeliner.

06:06Because I love like a thick, intense cat eye.

06:09And I feel like if I do it in black, it can be a bit too severe.

06:11So I always go for a brown liner.

06:13But then to bring in this color, I took a blue liquid liner and just put it under my eye.

06:19I think it creates a cohesive look without it looking too like,

06:22Oh my God, she's wearing blue and purple.

06:24So now her makeup's blue and purple.

06:26I definitely wanted to have like a modern, almost Richard Gere and American Gigolo feel to this.

06:33It feels like a dressed up daytime vibe to me.

06:36Nothing too dressy, but it looks like you put in an effort.

06:39It's definitely something I'll wear again.

06:42So if you see me in this, no you didn't.

06:45I would definitely invest in a black colorway or a tan to round it out.

06:51I'm a big believer that you like never get rid of your jeans.

06:54You save them for when they come back around.

06:57It's been fun to figure out how my wardrobe works with a flare.

07:00And I think I found more options than I was expecting.

07:06I'm getting a lot of inspiration.

07:07I would wear this outfit head to toe.

07:09I would wear this with a slightly different silhouette maybe.

07:12I feel like both of them, I'm like, now I need a trench coat and now I'm going to wear a turtleneck under my corsets.

07:19I love Cara's outfit because, you know, you get the drape at the neckline, the painterly print, which is really fun and organic.

07:27It feels really wearable, but chic with the high turtleneck.

07:30I love Madeline's juxtaposition with the hard lines of the corset belt with the flowiness of the flare.

07:36I think that's a good balance between the two.

07:39We all kind of have like elements of each other's outfits, which is really funny.

07:43I promise this was all a surprise.

07:45Even though we look like we're like, gotta go shoot a holiday card after this.

07:50One thing I want to say too is that I love the layering that's going on here.

07:55Like this is such a genius way to wear something corsety to work, you know, like throw a turtleneck under it.

08:01Kind of gives it a more like elevated intentional vibe and it's like appropriate for lots of different situations,

08:08which you might not feel comfortable with corset to work.

08:11I would not.

08:12Yeah.

08:13I have and I would again, but like it's not for everybody.

08:17I think the best part about this challenge was that it really makes you realize that clothes are not intimidating

08:22and there are so many options you already have in your closet to style with.
